This was awesome, I am a lifelong Wing Commander fan and I love the expanded lore :) The Wake-class is one of the best ships in the series, and I wish it had made a proper in-game appearance.
read the book it is epic. When my dad was dying I was in the gift shop at the hospital gift shop. There was a paperback book of Heart of the Tiger this carried me through a bad time
The main guns that would just never be used unless there was just no other option... That's why the frontier world's aggressive tactics in the books were so attractive. They didn't use their weaponry one by one like peeling an onion. They put everything in effect quickly and put priority on changing the odds early on.
After reading Wing Commander (and loving it) I later learned that the escort carrier idea that I bet the author used (for I do not know) that they were probably based on the escort carriers from WWII which is very cool to see that idea emerge in sci fi and well done at that
I found this channel because of this video. You do a great job and it's great to see Wing Commander Lore. I love these books, and End Run was fantastic. A space version of Billy Mitchell's raid. Keep up the good work
Always great to see more WC lore, thank you! That aside I also love the idea of the fleet making use of escort/raider carriers. It plays well into the depth of the game that while there were hero events going on and great battles wrecking entire systems. The game also keeps in mind the logistical and strategic measures that play a major part in any war.
I have a bad habit of "watching" videos like this while doing something else in another tab. As such, I only just noticed the "with scoops closed" note. Personally, I always figured that closing the scoops was meant to represent the "autopilot" stage transitions in the games. That all ships could go that fast, but that the comments about how it would make you vulnerable were to explain why you didn't use it in combat and couldn't go to autopilot when there were enemy fighters present.
I thought your take on autopilot was interesting. I always went with Autopilot just being the ships computer taking you to the waypoint, and that it would deactivate in combat simply due to it being a safety feature. With the autopilot transition simply being a means of conveying the passage of time and space. I know that Saga used the whole "Scoops Closed = More Speed" to great effect in the missions where CapShip reinforcements came out of nowhere.
@@MacsLore According to the lore of the setting the scoops induce "aerodynamic" drag in space by concentrating enough of the interplanetary or interstellar medium in front of the ship to act as a rudimentary atmosphere, explaining both why Wing Commander ships have a standard top speed rather than an acceleration figure, and behave more or less like airplanes: Because there's enough drag for them to do so. Closing the scoops frees the ship to accelerate to a hypothetical limit of the speed of light, but practically limited by the delta-V of the fuel they have on board. Presumably, a Wake's maximum delta-V (or maybe just Tarawa's) is around 10,000 kilometers per second (or 10 megameters per second, if you're being pretentious).
If 2 ships have the exact same engines then they will reach the exact same top speed in space which is basically the speed of the exhaust gases pushing the ship. The only difference is the time they need to reach the top speed depending on their masses.
This was right about the time I started learning how to transition to a Blender-based workflow for my videos. The ships are from the Wing Commander 3d model packs by Klavs81 (Hangar B Productions), and the backgrounds are just screenshots I took from a Freespace 2 Total Conversion called Wing Commander Saga. I'd pose the ships in Blender and put the screenshot background behind them. The Ships: www.wcnews.com/news/update/12832 Wing Commander Saga: www.wcsaga.com/
I was thinking of covering faction stuff stuff at some point in the far future. The first would probably be a cultural overview of the Kilrathi as there's plenty of material, followed by the Terran factions.
A lot of the games are of the old mindset where everything you need to survive is in the manual and the rest is sink or swim. If you're looking for a more modern-ish take, try out Wing Commander Saga. It really captures the spirit and feel of the Wing Commander games in my opinion, even if sometimes the in-flight convos can drag out a little too long. Just be sure to get the version (and it's patch) at wcsaga.com/ , and not the one on Knossos.
Please continue with wing commander lore! This is amazing!

Wing Commander is criminally underrated, I wish they brought back the series somehow.
Great video! She's my favorite carrier design in the WC universe.

Thats some impressive wiremodel animation
The production values of this is amazing. Please keep this up!
once again, great work on top of that, great looking presentation with the 3d models

Always loved the way the novels greatly expanded upon the lore of Wing Commander.
Wow, holy moly you scaled up production quality! Good job!

But in space, they weigh NOTHING!
@@DMSProduktions true but they still have mass to accelerate.
@@TheDude50447 I guess!
So many missing numbers. Real damn shame on that.
Is this from the mods Standoff or like Unknown enemy. I'm a muggle I just played Prophecy.
Oh this is WC4

Can you do the genesis of Wing Commander factions?

I would have played by now because of your videos but the wing commander I have starts you with no tutorial so I have no idea how to play
