I'd forgotten how much I miss games like Wing Commander. The 90s had great space warfare games. Descent Freespace and X-Wing vs Tie Fighter were also among my favs.
Do a search for Wing Commander Darkest Dawn, its a fan made project with the Freespace 2 engine, but its like an AAA game and actually was more fun for me as the original Wing Commander 3 and 4.
WW2 in space. Complex character relations. Nail biting dog fights. Cinematic plot lines. And your flight engineer was a Porn Star! I LOVED Wing Commander.
yeah there is actually a fan made freespace two mod for wing commander around the 3 era, but its hard as hell, as freespace is. wing commander saga is what it is called, and it is true to wing commander, just watch your power levels!! Keep your shields high if you want to survive! And extreme difficulty is impossible. Give up.
This was impressive. Having a new appreciation for Wing Commander. I've had the movie in my head as a reference all this time, with no exposure to the computer game, which appear superior. The movie really did a disservice to the games.
Ya NOT wrong! It was good on its own, but wasn't truly WC! Not sure WHAT Chris Roberts was thinking when he went retro-futuristic! The WC Academy TV series was MUCH closer to 'canon'!
Ironically the FMV games had also better cast than movie (and probably the highest profile cast in FMV game). Oh and there was also a cartoon. Also better than the movie (again mainly because it used game cast rather than movie one...)
DOS Era Sci-fi was so cool. It always had this dark eerie feeling to it. Despite (or because) of the technology limits of the hardware, always made me alone and isolated, yet claustrophobic at the same time.
The Victory has a special place in my heart.. The way WC3's story played out, the ship felt like home by the end and I legitimately cared about it and the characters aboard it.
I saw the movie Wing Commander and believe or not I was surprised that they made a Saturday morning cartoon series based on it too and it was also pretty good even though it was a little different from the movie.
The Designer ScoobyDoo from Saga do a few models for me that is not in Saga. Like the Gettysburg Class Battlecruiser (our own design), Bengal Strike Carrier (Tiger's Claw) the Gilgamesh Destroyer WC2 and the WC2 Base like Olympus - just a pm and I send Spacedock a lot of Ingame Saga Grafics. Just say what ship :D Example - Fleet Action :D abload.de/img/screen0000jjub6.jpg Another own design is the Northampton and look like a Black Lance Capital Ship
+airplanemaster1 It would be like us engaging the Terminators, and we all get wiped out except for everyone on Air Force One, some cruise ships, some cargo ships, and the USS Intrepid, which is mysteriously loaded up with a crapton of P-51 Mustangs and B-52 Flying Fortresses, and commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry. We should all be screwed, but we're not.
Yes! Need more Wing Commander! Next great ships would be the TCS Concordia, TCS Tigers Claw, and the TCS Cerberus or Midway. For fighters, we need the Excalibur, Hellcat V, or possibly Dragon. Also wouldn't mind seeing some FreeSpace stuff!
It blows my mind that a space carrier shares its class name with the most famous WWII USN carrier class. Yorktown CV-5 Enterprise CV-6 Wasp CV-7 (smaller variant) Hornet CV-8 And even more so that two of the fighters it carried are named after WWII planes, the F6F Hellcat and the P-47 Thunderbolt.
ALL tips of the hat! Surprisingly, (or perhaps not) WC COULD have, in all rights, named a WC ship the ENTERPRISE as well! BOTH universes named their ships after WW2 American, British, & Australian warships!
I loved WC. I played each game and it made me purchase my first sound card as they were one of the very few PC games that supported sound. The ships were fantasic and so is Space Dock! Thanks
This is probably too flippant for your style, but I would've added Blair's reply to 0:11. Yes, Sir. A VERY long history, Sir. Don't know how to underline in RUclips comments. Anyhow, watching this makes me want to re-play The Darkest Dawn. Speaking of which, the Hermes (Jutland Class Fleet Attack Carrier) or the Concordia (Confederation Class Dreadnought) are ships I think you could make great videos on.
This ship is heavily inspired by a WWII ship, even the airwing. Edit: the only Yorktown Class aircraft carrier to survive WWII pacific war was the USS Enterprise, but was scrapped shortly after.
There were only three Yorktown-class carriers. USS Yorktown, Enterprise, and Hornet. All were at the Battle of Midway. Yorktown was sunk at the conclusion of the Battle of Midway and the USS Hornet was sunk during the Battle of Santa Cruz. Both in 1942. USS Enterprise, possibly the most famous survivor of the war, was in mothballs until she was finally scrapped in 1958 after a failed ten year attempt to get the ship saved as a museum ship. She was never reactivated for Korea. Following the loss of the two other carriers, the US renamed two of the under construction Essex-class carriers into new USS Yorktown and USS Hornet. Bot served for the remainder of the war and both still exist today as museum ships. After many modifications, USS Yorktown would became a subclass leader of the majority of the anti-submarine converted carriers of the Essex-class, which included USS Essex and USS Hornet. But that designation was not until the late 1950s or even 1960. USS Yorktown was recommissioned too late to see service in Korea. USS Hornet also missed out on Korea due to refits.
Nice! Love wing commander capital ships. Always wanted to command that instead of a fighter. Like a Gilgamesh class destroyer! Hope u do more wing commander!
1:59 "Comprising" is the inverse of "comprised of," which is the one that would make sense in context. The various bombers and fighters comprise the Yorktown's strike craft complement, but the Yorktown's strike craft complement is comprised of the various bombers and fighters.
Spacedock - A couple of Sci-fi worth considering. 1. Space Above and Beyond (TV Series). I would like to see the SA-43 Hammerhead fighter and the USS SARATOGA. 2. Star Lancer (PC Game) Lots of decent fighters and Captial ships to explore.
My entry to the series was Wing Commander II, so the TCS Concordia and Saber class heavy fighter still stand out as some of the coolest ships in Wing Commander.
If you visit Wing Commander again, TCS Midway Super Carrier. Some of the game's fighter compliment would be nice too like the Rapier, Excalibur, and Wasp.
I loved Wing Commander, prob my favorite series of video games when i was young. I remember WC4 having like eight 5in floppy disks and how long it took to install on a computer. And we think it takes forever now... Lol
While o love your channel and where different ships collide in either continuity or other Sci-Fi series collide, I think the Victory-class Carrier alines closer to the Vesuvius-class Carrier than the Victory. I still love your channel and love how you champion "forgotten" Sci-Fi series like Babylon 5 (the most forgotten series responsible for all our best current Sci-Fi) and Wing Commander (the best PC Flight Sim of all time). Don't stop. Number stop. Even during the dark times like the quarantine, you will always have my support. While I may not be a huge supporter, I'll always be yours when you put such high quality videos like this, the Excalibur, the White Star, or any Wing Commander ship in your videos. Be excellent, and chase your dreams.
They must have crazy light future building materials for a Yorktown to be twice as long as an Earthbound aircraft carrier while weighing 1/5th as much.
I would welcome a video about the Midway of the Wing Commander IP. Prophecy was the first wing commander game I played and its remained close to my heart. though there is one part in that game during a complex and long mission where my game always crashed at the same point 5 times before it finally, think it involved doing a mission, the a cutscene, then you had to do another half mission, change disk and hope the game continued from there automatically That said, there are a ton of ships is the Starlancer game that I love also.
I've recently been rewatching the show Andromeda and always loved the High Guard ships from that. Any chance for us to see an episode on the Andromeda Ascendant or Pax Magellanic or some other ship from the show? Maybe in a vs match? I always loved how the unique ship design is based around a need for lessing missile impacts that is completely different from the normal "take it on the chin" method.
I have to admit, WingCommander Prophecy really shouldn't have gone the way it had. Sure, you can't have everything, but imagine if, when Midway recieves her Vampires, also a couple of Muffy class destroyers, a Plunket class cruiser and a pair of Yorktowns joined up to form defence. It would have been crazy cool to try to defend a fleet for a change.
Please do more wing commander. Would love break downs on ranger, Concordia, Lexington, classes as well as the destroyer and cruiser and frigate series vessels
The Concordia class carrier was actually in service at the start of the Kilrathi war with the TCS Concordia herself being lost during the McAuliffe Ambush in 2634. The Confederation class Dreadnought TCS Concordia (WC2 hero ship) is named after the previously mentioned Concordia (lost early 2669). More accurate statement would be that the Concordia was an evolution of the Yorktown class, as the Concordia class fleet carrier was the primary Fleet Carrier used in the pilgrim war. To be fair I find it curious that Bengal class carriers were sold off as export to the Landerich while older and less capable Yorktown and Concordia class carriers were retained even up to the end of, and past the Kilrathi war.
I miss Wing Commander. It doesn't nearly the attention it deserves these days. One of the first games I can remember with a detailed story and fleshed out characters (often played by recognizable Hollywood actors/actresses).
I'd love to see an episode on the Dreadnaught from Destiny or any covenant ship. Also, I watched the expanse recently, thanks to your videos! :D I love how realistic it is.
Well that sucks... I just started Wing Commander 3 for the first time and really didn't want to know that you destroy the enemy Homeworld... Oh well... Great channel and great video as always.
Always loved the Wing Commander series. Its a shame its a neglected property these days. Only issue I see is the end. The Concordia class mentioned actually existed during the War as they show up in the novels. The namesake ship of the class was destroyed in the novel showing the opening days of the war and was the main ship class during the war. The Lexington seen in Wing Commander 4 was partially destroyed during the False Peace.
Yorktown class did not influence the Concordia as Concordia was already an established and different design, but instead the Vesuvius class super carrier.
Fairly certain the Concordia-class was in service well before the conclusion of the Terran-Kilrathi War, but it did indeed take on most of the design cues of the Yorktown. I guess it depends on what the novelizations say as opposed to the games.
Nice one. I played the old Wing Commander games, seeing you doing vids about them makes me want to play them again. Would it be possible to cover the Spin-off Privateer games as well?
Mark Hamill flies a small nibble starfighter down a narrow trench and fires a weapon into the planet's venerable spot, destroying it and thereby winning the war.
I would like to see that, but lore and history of BBY-01 Yamato is yet to be completed in the show, this video should wait. I suggest alternative: Great Gamilas empire astrofleet breakdown (history will still develop in the future, but we know the basics about ship classes, that could be enough for short a video).
I’m watching the movie again. I never understood all the hate. Yes characters are bad, but we don’t get a lot of high quality sci fi. Love all the ships and battles
You are losing the war against an enemy that knows no mercy, the last most likely gambit you have to win the war is powerful but unfinished superweapon. So what do you do? Why, lets assign an outdated and heavily undergunned carrier to protect it, oh an also leave the damn thing undefended while that given carrier deploys a single wing of Arrows to protect it. What, isn`t this the first thing that comes to your mind as well? Its genius, the kilrathi will not expect it, the escort fighters sure were surprised when they arrived several kliks out without even a chance of intercepting anything. Ladies and Gentleman, the tactical genius of Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn.

@Michael Lewis I don't think the cartoon is canon, but either way it doesn't feature these ships as it takes place while Blair is a cadet, far before any of these vessels took center stage.
Yeah, that was the Tiger's Claw that got hit by the stealth fighters wasn't it? IIRC the Behemoth got hit by a strike consisting of Paktahn class Kilrathi bombers that were waiting just by the jump point. Man, it's been years...
I'd forgotten how much I miss games like Wing Commander. The 90s had great space warfare games. Descent Freespace and X-Wing vs Tie Fighter were also among my favs.

WW2 in space. Complex character relations. Nail biting dog fights. Cinematic plot lines. And your flight engineer was a Porn Star! I LOVED Wing Commander.

@Frey where did i said that movie ruined games? It ruined experience for everyone who loved them.

When the war isn't going your way, break out the museum piece.
It often works. See Battlestar Galactica.
The Galactica is even better for the simple fact that it *IS* the museum being brought to war!
