      I have to say the novels that were released alongside the Wing Commander series of games really do an amazing job of expanding on the world building of the games, fleshing out aspects you never thought of until they brought it up on paper.
      I highly recommend "End Run" if you can find a copy; it has one of the best long stern chase stories I've ever read in a scifi novel.

      Not only that, the novelization of Wing Commander IV explains why the Intrepid is considered a destroyer/light carrier hybrid: it carries multiple torpedo launchers, in addition to the laser turrets and fighter compliment.

    Wing Commander IV is one of my favourite games of all times, and the Intrepid is one of the great ships in the series. Sure, losing the TIger's Claw was heartbreaking, but man you felt every single hit the Intrepid took throughout the game, and Eisen jumping in to rescue you when all hope seems lost against the Vesuvius is a phenomenal moment.

    Thank you for producing these videos. I actually played both Wing Commander III and IV when I was younger as well as read the novelizations for both. In fact, I still have the actual physical games (boxes, CD-Roms, strategy guides, etc) in a plastic tub in my garage and the novels in my book collection. One thing I will note is that the Intrepid (at least according to the Price of Freedom novelization) is called a light carrier/destroyer because the Border Worlds took two decommissioned Confed destroyers and slung the landing bay area between them. But again that's according to the novelization of the game by Forstchen and Ohlander, a novelization that does deviate significantly from the in-game background information. Anyway, excellent video as always. Look forward to the next and hopefully The Sojourn soon.

    Well, it was likely a "heavy destroyer" in its heyday; the wiki over at WCNews notes that the design predates the Kilrathi war, and it's arms compliment lines up more with the Exeter-class destroyers from the original Wing Commander than the later Southampton-class. It's also likely that being overhauled into a light carrier by the UBW saw some of the guns removed in the process.
    Still, a fun video. The Durango-class is a favorite of mine, too.

    Poor Wing Commander Prophecy, it never gets any love. So many at the time had a hard time running it when it first came out. It was the beginning of the end for space sims. I thought they would really make a come back when Free Lancer came out, but I was wrong.

    • @azraelswrd
      @azraelswrd 5 лет назад +2

      Prophecy soured me a bit because we didn't play as Chris Blair and the story felt more generic than usual (ie. Nephilim? Rookie Lance Casey?) but the gameplay was fine. It was just the story that left me wanting.

    • @onTopOfYoMutha
      @onTopOfYoMutha 5 лет назад

      Yeah, Prophecy was excellent, but as usual EA kills all successful franchises. This is just one in a long line a nail in the coffin for another studio, bought and owned by EA.

      Well, Freelancer was rather a successor to Privateer and apart from the mouse controll it was great. If you want something more like wing commander try Starlancer. But don't expect live action FMV scenes, they were too expensive for such a small studio.

    Oi, awesome video! Wanna say thank you for using shots from my Homeworld mod (cheers to DefianceIndustries for the model itself), and if you have any special requests for Wing Commander I to IV shots or setpieces, just PM me on the CIC (handle L.I.F.) and I'll be glad to see with you what you need that couldn't be normally done through the released version of the mod. Plus, I happen to have one of the largest 3D libraries out there for Wing Commander due to said mod (including tons of stuff that hasn't been integrated in the mod such as the Caernaven station from Privateer).

    • @Spacedock
      @Spacedock  5 лет назад +2

      Amazing job on the Homeworld mod man! You really did justice to the IP and the visuals are easily the best source for HD Wing Commander ships. Thanks so much for the kind offer, i'll be sure to get in touch if something comes up! - Daniel

    • @lindsaymcdonalds5938
      @lindsaymcdonalds5938 5 лет назад +3

      Thanks! To be honest, it's really a community work. This guy, Aaron Thomas, made the original HW2 mod all by himself and I kinda inherited it from him when he went off the radar. All these models you see are made by one of the best communities I've ever seen. The WC III models are from the Wing Commander Saga mod team, who generously gifted their labour of love (seriously, play that game, it's parallel to Wing Commander III and is on the level of the main games). The Border Worlds and Black Lance ones are from DefianceIndustries (BTW, he made an improved version of the Banshee compared to the shot you used - with the cockpit having the correct edges). And then the WC I and II ships are from Klavs81, the guy who made my computer almost melt down due to the absurdly detailed models he has. The fighters you see in-game? That crazy genius had them more complex than the Hiigaran's entire mothership! The game engine just cannot support such level of detail, so these fighters... I've had to split them into half a dozen models just for the engine to not crash and burn.
      I've been in various scifi communities, but the Wing Commander one is in a league of its own: without any main series game or production for a decade, it still manages to remain active, friendly and they're ready and willing to work with anyone of good will. That, lads, is something unique.
      Oh? And some modellers are working on making HD versions of the Wing Commander Prophecy and Secret Ops ships. All of them, directly implemented into Secret Ops.

  • @DicePunk
    @DicePunk 3 года назад +2

    I love the Banshee design the most throughout the franchise also.
    So underrated but such an iconic silhouette. In a strange way, it echoes the multi-prong Kilrathi designs of WC2 like the Vaktoth.
    Maybe the ship designers missed having more exotic designs and decided to throw some of that into the Banshee. That, along with it being the only ship in WC4 that used ballistic weapons, made it such a great representation of the aesthetic of the Border Worlds.

  • @KingmanHighborn
    @KingmanHighborn 5 лет назад +1

    Thank you again for the Wing Commander coverage, it's truly a piece of my childhood to the point I hold it closer to my heart than any other sci-fi universe. Also while not 'technically' canon iirc the WC4 novel mentions the BWS Intrepid is two Durango class destroyers that the Border Worlders sandwiched between a flight deck and made it space worthy. With the TCS Delphi's bridge and extra components becoming the new bridge. I'd imagine the bridge probably looked like the one on the Southampton class. I'll have to go reread the novel to make sure though.

    Actually, according to the novelisation of WC4, the Durango-class was a destroyer which has been converted to a light carrier.

    I have a special place for the TCS Victory, Wing Commander 3 rocked. But I was always quite impressed with the TCS Midway of Wing Commander 5. Its logical and natural evolution mirroring our own experience and explained in game. Essentially shes the Nimitz class in space, after the end of the Kilrathi war they realised that they couldn't maintain such a large fleet of carriers and escorts so they came up with the TCS Midway, a super carrier capable of fighting an entire campaign as a lone carrier task force, and then part way through the game its upgraded with a captured alien superweapon making it able to stand as a battleship/carrier hybrid.

    Eyy, more WC! Keep it up! Still would love to see a full Spacedock on the Bengal Class Strike Carrier. Also, the Durango class was a pre-war "heavy destroyer" design that was refitted into a training carrier and later UBW light carrier. I suspect the flight deck was originally entirely reactor space, similar to the axial reactor on the later Gilgamesh class, designed to power sponson weapons that were removed. Antimatter cannons weren't readily available yet so my guess would have been large plasma cannon or laser batteries, or maybe even those giant capital-class neutron cannons we got to read about in Action Stations.

      @airplanemaster1 5 лет назад +4

      @Felix B Nexus The Jupiter Incident is an excellent strategy game, with complete 3D space combat, full newtonian physics, and stellar graphics even for its age. But there is a steep learning curve. Specifically after you trade in the Stiletto for the main ship of the game. The 2 stealth missions are absolute bitches to play without a full guide, and it's recommended to play the entire game following a guide, especially since in 1 late game mission, unless you follow said guide *to the letter,* the game will crash. But I highly recommend Nexus nonetheless.

    • @davidcolby167
      @davidcolby167 5 лет назад +1

      Nexus: the Jupiter Incident was the fastest a game ever "lost" me. Basically, after you go through a wormhole and the game has a 4 minute cinimatic cut scene that just... explains the answers to dozens of questions in the most boring way imaginable, I was like: "Well...there went all of my investment in this story!"
      Then it drops you into a confusing and messy as fuck convoy escort mission with dozens of new, completely unexplained gameplay concepts.
      And I was like, "Well, glad this game was only 9 bucks..."

    As far as the "destroyer-carrier" designation, I always figured that it was that the UBW took a destroyer into spacedock, gutted the central hull, and built a light carrier onto the existing spaceframe. It's not that it can do both; it's that it was made from a destroyer.

    I remember a friend of mine was lauding the dialogue choices in Mass Effect, talking about how the words you chose for dialogue trees weren't necessarily the words your character would say, though the general context was still the same. I had to tell him that Mark Hamill's character in Wing Commander was doing that long before Mass Effect was a thing.
    I remember playing the game with a friend on the PlayStation, and there was this one ridiculous stretch of space that for some reason we couldn't just jump and auto progress to the destination in. haha, as soon as you said that you only know one such example, I immediately remembered only the nexus where there were huge reverse engines) for a long time I want to go through it again. And then you say that this is a nexus!))))))

    I loved playing the old Wing Commander series. I haven't fired up my old Windows 95 3DFx computer in a while (though it was working last year). May have to test it out since it still has WC 3 and 4 installed.

    Now I gotta hunt down those cut scenes. They look better than the actual movie.
    Also, can you do the ships of Pace: Above and Beyond or Colony Wars (speaking of 90s scifi shooters)?

    Spacedock! Love the content and eagerly awaiting the Sojourn. As a long time fan of sci-fi as well as people who enjoy their input towards it: it'd be interesting to see you record playing some of these games with commentary ( closer to MST3k). Still think your voice overs of various commentary would be beneficial to many people's ears.
    Keep up the good work!
    P.s. Kick some giant space cat ass!

    The officer that throws a salute in the BWS Intrepid FMV scene is played by John Spencer, who would go on to play Leo McGarry in West Wing .

    My favorite warship from a not so popular game, R-Type Command, is the UFBS-010 Heimdall. Such a beast, and it looks amazing, tho it does have its flaws, nonetheless I love it along with that game, I still find myself on the PSP and playing that game, I love the story and gameplay.

    Wing Commander was an awesome franchise ! It started with a good game and added lots of lil extras. the cut scenes weren't real to start but they were there and in the first game there was a simulator in the mess you could play that was as good as the game itself.

    It's not a hybrid Destroyer / Light Carrier, it's an escort carrier they built out of a Destroyer. The Durango class was an early Kilrathi War era Destroyer that the UBW modernized and converted into an Escort Carrier. The novelization points out that it still has Torpedoes for anti-ship use, but even then they're a last resort (basically, when the Vesuvius turns on them they entertain the idea of using those in a suicide attack to try and stop the Black Lance). I had thought that the AA turret layout was going to be listed among the things you liked about the design, as it's a simple, grounded, effective approach.

    Speaking of Sci-fi's ships you've never heard of there is a game called project sylpheed that has this one beastly battleship type ship (I don't know if it ever got a name) that I've always loved. I kind of wish that game got more attention because it was rather good for what looked like a pretty small budget

    Mark Hamill playing Maverick was the perfect choice back in the day. His presence in the series starting with WC3 was a great addition, and honestly all of the cast were great choices except John Rhys Davies. Don't get me wrong, he played the part well, he just was such a visual departure it was hard for me as a kid to make that connection in my head. Also, Malcolm McDowell as Tolwyn was just.....AMAZING

    Actually, in the lore the Intrepid was originally a destroyer. The BWS removed her armament to make space for hangars, added a flight deck, and turned her into a light carrier. That's the only reason it's called a DD/CV "hybrid". It's a carrier built from a destroyer hull.

  • @jacobkinpaler8778
    @jacobkinpaler8778 5 лет назад

    Can't Remember the name of the Wing Commander Novel (think it comes between 4 and Prophecy) but I do recall mention of the Intrepid having a small compliment of torpedo launchers in addition to the fighter compliment...she was a destroyer that was refitted with a flight deck similar to the way some of the old Japanese Battleships in WW2 were converted to hybrid float plane carriers.

  • @Shogun0099
    @Shogun0099 5 лет назад

    I get the feeling the "destroyer" designation comes from the fact that when first launched the ship was indeed strong enough to be a front line vessel, but was later refitted to be a light carrier, as technology moved forward, and other ships rapidly outclassed it in terms of both offence and defence.

    Love the intrepid. Though the whole WC line was brilliant. The Vesuvius, the midway and most of the fighter designs were inspired!
