    Fun Wing Commander fact: when these games released, your typical computer game wasn’t able to detect a computer’s core clock speed and measure its performance to scale. It simply ran everything at the fastest speed it could render at, and as people mostly had 386s at the time (with turbo buttons!!) it didn’t make much of a difference. However this didn’t scale well as CPUs got orders of magnitude faster. Meaning, if you had a sufficiently fast computer, the game would run ridiculously fast. This was hilarious in WC2 where the audio in the cutscenes would play properly, but the characters’ animated mouths would flap like dozens of times per second. Looked like they were just constantly going pfpfbfbfbfbfbfbtbtt

    A great flagship from a great series. Sadly, the former had to be brutally short lived, while the latter just slowly but surely seems to start feeling primitive, while the likes of Star Wars: TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance, FreeSpace 2 with the Source Code Project, Tachyon: The Fringe, and other combat flight sims appear to be passing the tests of time well; them seemingly being abandoned by their "father" for what might be a gaming scam or two doesn't help.

    The only flaw with Wing Commander and carrier strikes I have learned after much time spent in X4 is the strike packages are far too... small. There's no way a carrier would launch four bombers to take down a destroyer or a dreadnaught, as they would sustain far too many casualties. Instead, they'd launch 40 - 50+ bombers with additional escorts to end the threat as fast as possible, dock, and jump out of system before reinforcements could arrive.

    I think there was inconsistency when it comes to the Wing Commander animated series and the original WC1. In the Kurasawa System Mission 3 Blair tells the Colonel at the briefing that he served aboard the TCS Formidable back during the Acadamy days. I think it makes sense they wouldn't want to carry a NavCom on their ships because it would be easier to capture. Better to have them in secure positions and give ships the vectors they'd be expected to need which would be more easily dumped in case the ship was at risk of capture.

    • @MacsLore
      @MacsLore  3 года назад +4

      A very good point. My own thinking in this video at the time I was making it, was that Confed was cutting manufacturing costs for their ships by keeping the super expensive (I assume) Navcomp AI in the one area they'd absolutely need it. And also there's the regular risks of it being captured or destroyed if they were placed on the ships as you said, which is bound to piss off the Confed taxpayers.

      I replied to your comment in my video about the Victory, but I'll comment here as to why I chose the characters I did. Just in case someone else brings up this valid point while watching the video.
      The characters I put in the spotlight are ones that I believed had more lasting impacts in the Wing Commander universe outside the games where we were introduced to them. Bossman, Knight, and yes, unfortunately, even Shotglass in my opinion, were pretty much dropped after WC1. Iceman only got mentioned due to his son Lance being in Wing Commander Prophecy.
      Although, like with Rachel, I guess I could have added Col. Halcyon to the showcase in retrospect.

    The Wing Commander movie was not a very good movie. However, movies are one of those things that don't need to be "good" in order to do their job. That being to entertain a person for a couple of hours. 18 year old me liked it.
    The thing that has stuck with me about it were the plethora of people I heard making a specific complaint made of two parts. That it was a bad sci-fi movie because it leaned heavy (or too heavily) into the 'ww2 in space' aesthetic. Combined with that being such, it was far out of line with the games. Which always struck me as odd. So many people making that combo of a complaint. I can see the first part as pretty valid due to how subjective it is. Not everyone likes that type of aesthetic. Personally I find it can be really fun and interesting. But I can easily understand people who want more grounded space warfare (never sorry for my puns). That second part though...
    I started with the books. though I had known a tiny bit about the setting beforehand and that is what made me even consider the books in the first place. I started the games with IV and to this day have never played the first 2. III & IV as well as the books I read were about as close to a literal interpretation of ww2 in space this side of Space Battleship Yamato (which I adore, old and new).
    99% of my experience with early Wing Commander is thanks to Star Wreck (if nothing else watch In The Pirkining). So I honestly don't know if those people criticizing the movie were coming at it from some other perspective. But to me, it sounded like blatant BS. That in and of itself is not notable. What really stuck with me was the volume of people I remember making this complaint back when the movie came out.
    addendum: End Run is to me the quintessential ww2 in space story. People are quick to note the blatant similarities with the Doolittle Raid and the classes of ships and whatnot. But I never hear much about how it also incorporates elements of the Battle of Jutland (the splitting of the Kilrathi fleet and its defeat in detail mirrors the plan of the High Seas fleet to defeat the British Grand Fleet). The battle of Midway (the trap laid at that worthless holy planet). The Channel Dash (Tarawa's push through the defended system on the way home). Perhaps even the attack on the Kilrathi construction yards was in part inspired by things like Pearl Harbor (which is famous for its success against ships, but unlike the book, infamous for its failure against infrastructure)
    edit: Yes Jutland is WW1, but it still falls into the same overall 'ww2 in space' category people like to use (people get annoyed when you start talking about how it is actually an analog to naval combat on earth rather than "ww2 in sppaaaaaaace".). ww2 in space gets you a surface action with more emphasis on 3d warfare (air & underwater as well as surface). 'WW1 in space' gets you Battlefleet Gothic, which is basically just a 2D surface action, befitting its legacy as stemming from a tabletop game from wh40k. (even if nobody knows the difference... the whole ramming element of BFG screams "1880's naval design and doctrine as well... even if the ships themselves take design cues from real life ships from after ww1)

    Love the artwork and the the detail. Beautifully done!
    One of my biggest pet peeves with Wing Commander Series games/books and that god awful movie…is the numbers. Numbers in the series never seem to be anywhere close to “making sense” even for it being sci-fi.
    Example: The Tiger’s Claw here - only 8 dual turrets? Yet the picture they provide in the manual shows more. Another is the tonnage, how can something 80,000 tons have less armor, less shield strength than the Kilrathi Snakier (only being 30,000 tons). Not sure if my math is right, 😂, but isn’t that a 50,000 ton difference? Meaning 1 Tiger Claw is almost 3 Snakiers in weight. Yet it’s way weaker in almost every respect. Where did that extra weight get used? Certainly not into better engines, it’s slower. Certainly not into more armor. Nor better shields. Not in more weapons, remember only 8 dual laser turrets. I could go on and on. At the end of the day, it’s sci-if…I know. But wish the designers/authors/producers researched their ideas better.
    Again though, love the video and love the channel!
