    I always prefered either the Sabre or Thunderbolds. Still when heavy firepower was needed the Broadsword was your weapon of choice.

      Nope...fancy weps are no replacement for 3 turrets and heavy Armor.
      The sabre might punch through jalheki groups, but only the broadsword will bring you back home alive.

      I do feel the Saber is a better torpedo delivery platform. Lock on, afterburn in, release closer to the enemy capship than recommended. Less chance of the projectile being shot down. The Broadsword holds up better against Flak, but future bombers after its limited run replacement the Crossbow had afterburners...

    I remember the few missions that we got to fly this beast in Wing Commander 2, I would switch to third-person camera when surrounded by Kilrathi fighters. The three neutron turrets would automatically fire on enemies within range while I try to dodge incoming fire. Quite often, this was more effective at taking out large numbers of Kilrathi than in first-person cockpit view where you only controlled the forward guns. Loved this ship.

    Well, this is it. My favorite ship from WC 2. Yes, she's slow, but she's got teeth. All over her, as the video shows. With those three turrets you could switch over to on the fly, no light fighter could sneak up on me. And you were the bane of any capship. After this, the Longbow just didn't entirely measure up for me, even though I, as a general rule, prefer flying heavy fighters and bombers in flight-sims, as opposed to light and medium fighters.

    • @Deepingmind
      @Deepingmind Год назад +2

      Solo you could be in trouble, but with several flying formation you have a lot of supporting cover fire which eats up enemy interceptors.

      Back in WC2 the AI will actually man the turrets for you, you will not need to visit a turret for anything except tractor beams. After all, as part of a working military, your ship must always be fully crewed, and the crew complement of a Broadsword is 4 (1 + 3 gunner). This feature was not present in Privateer, making turrets less useful than they should have been.

    • @Nergalsama01
      @Nergalsama01 6 месяцев назад

    One important and interesting game that most people overlook in the Wing commander series is Wing commander Armada. Particularly the manual "Voices of War" contains captains logs of the first contact between the Kilrathi and the Terran's and explains how the war started. in addition in a campaign if you tell it to actually allow you to fight the combat instead of just going by the odds it is the only game in the wing commander series that lest you pilot Kilrathi ships aside a few missions in SM2. in addition it was the first introduction of the Arrow (one of my favorite fighters in the series), the reaper cannon, and some other control features ("autoslide" button ) that were included in Wing commander 3. Its also the only canon Wing commander game where you can fly a Gladius. but also there were some new ships and weapons' that didn't make it into wing commander 3 that are also very interesting. and by the way its multi player mode is a lot of fun to use if you want some WC bragging rights against someone who claims to be better at the game than you :)

    • @udirt

      I loved the one... Uh Morningstar or so? Very fast thin wide winged fighter with good guns.
      Also the flak you got in carrier attacks in Armada were just brutal.
      The only worse damage I remember from the whole series was being one-shotted by crossfire from two destroyers in wc1 or wc2.

    I loved the design of this ship since I first saw the animated series. I was very disappointed when I finally got to play a game that featured it as it was so slow. Eventually came around a little, but I still hate some of the dogfight-heavy missions in one but love the look of the fighter.

    Looks amazing. I am curious why you said the Gothri was the first torp bomber, rather than the Grikath (Klavs has a model for that). I would also, if it's not too late for the final video mention the fact that a torpedo's lock time is a danger, so the turrets have their jobs cut out for them. My understanding was that sabres/rapiers/swords were deployed in other engagements, just not on the victory. Any truth to that?
    As always, this is a work of beauty. Thanks Mac!

    • @MacsLore
      @MacsLore  Год назад

      My understanding was that the Grikath was primarily designed as a Heavy Fighter that could load a Torpedo or two, like the Sabre. But at the end of the day it was never specifically labelled as a Bomber. While the Gothri has been called a Heavy Fighter, it's also been called a bomber as well. So for me it came down to siding with the ship that did have the name bomber attached to it, over the one that didn't.
      About torpedo lock times...yeah. That was an unintentional omission on my part.
      Lastly, about the WC2 fighters, I don't think it's been explicitly said, but if the WC4 novel (I know it's canon is *Very* dubious) had the UBW using that era of fighters, then I would think they did use them in the war. If there was any other mention of them anywhere else, I'm unable to remember.

    • @MacsLore
      @MacsLore  Год назад

      That's Wing Commander!
      No, really. The manuals all give every ship a max velocity value, with the games following suit. In my own headcanon I just say it's a quirk of how space combat in the WC universe works.

    • @saquist
      @saquist 4 месяца назад

      Look at it this way. A fighter has a finite fuel and the max speed is dictated by how much retro fire required to arrest that forward motion a return to the carrier, the engagement or escourt. Think of it as a limiter

    • @waynem4791
      @waynem4791 4 месяца назад

      I think a better explanation is that the game designers did not think it through, or did and didn't care. Still a great game.
      I remember people buying PCs just so they could play Wing Commander.

    • @saquist
      @saquist 3 месяца назад +1

      @@waynem4791 actually I think they simply chose WW2 fighter dynamics over real physics because most people understand how planes fly.
      Clearly they knew how fast kilometers per second was. The Space Shuttle is 7 kps. 450 kps is a million miles per hour and on afterburner the fighters are hitting a quarter light speed. That would mean earth to the sun in 32 minutes and 45 minutes to the Asteroid belts. Wing commander maps may lack Orbital dynamics and traditional solar system features but the distances shown seem very purposeful to me. .
      This is the minimum speed to have a spacefaring interstellar civilization with out FTL engines.
