Copywrite issues, I think. The movie was produced by the Robert brother's (the creators of Wing Commander). But by this point, they sold most of those rights to Origin and had split from them. Wing Commander 4 was their last WC game with Origin, who made Wing Commander Prophecy around the time this movie came out. But the Robert brothers did another split off space sim game (I don't remember the name) that had cutscenea from the movie.
If I'm correct, I believe Chris Roberts not only worked on / created the Wing Commander games, but Star Citizen, too. He financed this movie and wanted his favorite stars in it, or something like that. Check the information on it, it'll say. 😉

Yeah it gives the story setting the feel & vibe of an alternate steampunk cyberpunk dieselpunk earth universe where they are using classical ship designs from the 20th century & not the 27th century of which is the original era/setting in the game. As Chris Roberts put it, it is World War II in space.
Wing Commander movie is very underrated. Interesting plot, great actors and characters. It is really a shame that it was released in 1999, a year that was dominated by Matrix.
The Special Effects in this movie kind of get a bad rap but I still love the shot of the Kilrathi Battleship getting ripped apart lengthwise by the Pulse Wave.

I was annoyed by the blatant WW2 similarities. The original games weren't as transparent. You could see the WW2 similarities, but it wasn't as direct. This hurt the movie, imo.
One of the few issues I have with movies like this, is that they simply forget that if you shut down your engine in space, you don't crash. Shut it down, drift, and get picked up by a rescue tug. Obviously, Rosie had to die to push the following story arc, but jeeze... do it right.

I noticed they changed the name from the original when the bombers made their run. In the original version he stated "steady on course Mr. LeForse" in this version he called him Mr. Knight. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm!!
This movie had no business being as good as it was! And having a Shakespearean actor such as the likes of David Suchet in a video game movie is nothing to sneeze at. May have to give this another watch for old time sake.
0:04 ... Why are the space ships falling a little bit just before rising after they leave the edge of the deck? There is no gravity there at the end of the deck. I know the studio is just making it subconsciously familiar to audiences who have seen this happen on oceanic aircraft carriers in real life. But it does not have to happen here though, so it is just odd. Of course we can further make things up as to why it is happening here. It is science `fiction` after all. 12/08/24

lost me at the planes dipping after exiting the launch run way... as if there is gravity in space, and aerodynamics to bump them back up? and why exactly would fighters shake like that? what are they buffeting against? and torpedos that fall into space like water? movie looks like it was made just after a WWII battle scene and they forgot to hit the space physics switch when the new film crew came in. its WWII carrier combat... but in space... almost half expected to see the pilot eject without a suit into space... with a parachute. and "pull up"? pull up from what? heh.

The torpedo scene makes totally sense, those torpedoes are pushed out by... compressed gas whatever out of the tubes and then start getting speed when their engines kick in. Of course does a fighter shake up like that, when it has some big ass cannon that uses primer and gunpowder to shoot that gun. they don't use lasers in the movie (do in the games tho). And why should a spacecraft not dip after the runway? i mean they don't need a runway at all, but they wanted one in the movie, since it's in the books. to have them slide over the runway just some rcs thruseters firing down, and disengaging and engaging some other thrusters to bump back up. you are not very smart for pointing out these things and not coming up with an explanation for yourself. also, noone cares if they 'lost you' this movie is 25 years old - older than you probly by 2 decades

Watching this scene more closely made me wonder if the idea of the cannons on those Rapiers spinning when they fired like a minigun was a Mandela Effect thing...
A reboot will kill Wing Commander for sure. If is it going to be a new movie they must not at any chance include DEI silliness and the actors should be chosen with the appropriate character building which means that a very good script
I remember playing the Wing Commander games, and I remember how cool it was to watch the movie. But the only glaring, most blatant WRONG thing about the movie was too fixated about real Aircraft Carriers, and how gravity works within an actual body's atmosphere. "Okay, as the fighter launches, they lose a bit of height due to gravity...." Gravity in space. So it looked like when the fighters were launching from the star carrier, it looked like they were dipping towards a non-existent ocean. I found that off putting. What was worse, was the scene, where they pushed the fighter off the deck into space, and instead of floating away, the fighter dropped "overboard" as if it was also sinking into a non-existent ocean or waterway. And when I saw those scenes in the movie, I was going, "WTF is this?" It's space. And outside the ship, they were treating a Fighter Carrier in space as the same as a Fighter Carrier on the ocean. The two arn't the same. Loved the origin story. But I hated the director's mechanics of gravity.
I really wish the studio would release a 25th Anniversary edition this year or early next to coincide with the release of Squadron 42, the next amazing space game from the genius of Chris Roberts.

I love how the SPACE SHIPS... which are in SPACE... fall off the end of the launch ramp, which is in space... when they are launching.

They didn't have the money to recreate the Wing Commander fighters, but got some cheap old jet fighter cockpits to use in close up scenes.
