In this video, I will be going over 5 ways to make your synths hit harder! With a bit of mixing and sound design tricks, we can get our synths to hit harder in our tracks.
The first way is to utilize compression to give a lifeless synth a bit more punch through dynamics. Using a compressor with a high attack and low knee, we can add volume change that will get the synth hitting harder.
The 2nd way, if you are against compressing your synths original source is by utilizing Parallel Compression. Similar to the 1st tip we will be using compression to achieve the punch but this time we will be doing it on a separate channel to avoid squashing our lead.
The sound design also plays an important role in the smack of the synth. Some cool tricks to use is layering a click or white noise with the lead. This gives the lead more presence and a feel like it's smacking harder. Just make sure to mix it in properly so that it doesn't sound obnoxious.
Watch the video for the rest and happy producing

“It’s like a Pepsi” - zen world
Hey Zen, can you make a tutorial about bleu clair's style?
Nice video man, I’ve been watching you and following the channel since day 1, and I’m glad to see you are still doing well. I’ve come along way in my productions from when I first started watching and a good amount has def come from this channel man. Thanks
Zen i love your videos! Always something to learn ❤️ Keep it up!
PS:
A matroda style tutorial would be sick!
your content has helped me so much on my album, thanks a lot man.
Anything I can do to help
I also sometimes like to add he noise oscillator and set it to metal tick 1 or 2 in one shot mode to make my synths a little more percussive and prickly on sounds like these. You'll find that it gives you that coarse pitch punch just a bit without affecting the actual sound of osc A or B
You could put a limiter on with the compressor so that the gain/volume doesn’t exceed the volume of what you originally had it selected at
Hey Zen! Can you make a video of how to use transient shaper and what its doing? I'm not sure if you ever make a video about that but could be usefull! Thanks again for the constant effort you put in these tutorial!
You gave a useful advice a few months ago. It was to add a 700Hz bell on leads. It works great too! Anyway thanks for all your precious advices!
In which video does he explain that? Sounds interesting.
Have you ever tried impulse response? It is usually for guitars
good shit!
Nice tips bro
Yo Zen! Can you put a link to your music you create in your next vid?
I'd seriously love to listen to your work bb
HEYYY man, thanks for that!
what day are you going to do the black friday? ..
I hope that this year the black friday will be more generous. we DJs had a difficult year without parties...
Best Regards
Have you done a video on LORN or cinematic sounds? Love you work :) listen to egorythmia! Brings cinematics into psytrance like no one else.
U're amazing
use ableton's ott, set output to 16db and time from 500 - 1000% to compress. works on synths to make them pop but brilliant for drums.
I like ya cut g 😤🙏
Almost sounds exactly like Armin van buuren, Shapov -The last dancer
Yes thats it!
@@ZenWorld Had to go give that another listen! Such a great song.
Damn I was thinking about this the whole video. But there we go! Yeah, of course I had to give it a listen now as well :)
@@ZenWorld Last dancer, one of the best Armin songs!
Hey zen you gonna check out vital when it comes out
Plz make tutorial for compression
FYI transient shapers are basically compression with macros instead of the open controls :)
No they aren't
@@mikebinding23 really?
@@ModernDevotion really
@@mikebinding23 I was asking for more detail not incredulity. I believe you.
Transient shaper is the same thing as envelopes. When you lower the sustain in transient shaper it's the same if you did it with serums envelope. And vice versa
This man is getting crazier in every video 😂
Zen world u legend
I have a question, when making tracks (I make Deep House orientated tracks, such as JLV, Tru Concept, Meduza etc.) I always struggle with the low end. For some reason my mix sounds good on my speakers and headphones, but when I listen it somewhere else, the thump / punch of the kick is really boomy and the sub sounds really loud. This makes my tracks sound really bad, but when I lower the sub the kick is too boomy, any recommendations or advice would be great!
@@lukeelderkin Yeah I make my kick shorter with reversed sidechain to match the sub
@@lukeelderkin But sometimes the kick is still too boomy for some reason
Instead of boosting the low end of your kick, try using saturator or overdrive in parallel and make it work in the lower mids. You'll be adding punch instead of boom
That fresh cut tho..
Habstrakt style please🙌🏻
Hi! Do you have black friday sale?
Yeah next week 😀
For "parallel compression" why not just put the compressor in the main effect chain and set the dry/wet?
I tried doing that but it introduced a bit of delay from the compressor process and it messed up the phasing of the sound. It was basically sending the dry and then the wet signal just a tiny bit later, and it really messed up the sound.
@@ahreuwu but wouldn't the compressor also add a bit of delay if you put it in a seperate processing chain?
Because zen wants to have total control of the dry sound, so he sends it. It also gives you more control for automation. You should do this too, but just use the audio effect rack so you can split the same track into many different channels.
@@ahreuwu hey are sure it wasn't just your release time settings that may have caused the "delayed" sound?
Zen bro I want those funny roast videos
How about super short kick layer technique ?
He mentioned that at 5:04
@@anup4m44 damn. I skipped it 😅
Live 11?
Smack!
It up
Please do a tutorial on BLR BOLIER WSTLNDR STYLE !
Love that style but not on my curriculum at the moment
@@ZenWorld wanted to know just how he managed to get that great sounding low end !!!?
U mean WNDRLST?
@@rickf6375 No . It’s WSTLNDR . He made a track called NYX . It’s a really outstanding tune . Take a listen and you won’t regret it !!!
I can’t tell if any of this stuff is improving the sound when it’s not in a mix :/
Yeah sorry about that! I'm trying to build out this Future Rave pack before diving into making it. Just trying to make sure I have every sound needed when I start producing and figuring it out. However trust the tips and try them out! They've been around for awhile and I've made videos on this content before when BIG ROOM was a thing. If it can work in that environment it will work for the current META.
@@ZenWorld for sure man, I been on your page a year plus and I appreciate all you do. I really like the start to finish song videos, would love to see another.
why zen always lookin like hes sweating thooo
Check out vital synth, it's insane, and it's free.
is it actually free?
@@tysonmccorkle1036 yes it's free, and does more than serum.
@@rebazkh85 Checking it!
We all witnessed the power of Pepsi
papi
the compressor makes us feel like were htting... rather than... not
compression can make grown hairy man cry 😂
Nice little hair hanging there
Zen you're doing it wrong dude, just whack a camel crusher on the lead bus, that's what i do anyway, makes the synths hella loud
