This isn't technically an EQ problem...
In fact, thin mixes usually come from a poor arrangement.
But sometimes they can come from a poor use of EQ, too.
When you prevent and address thinness in your track, you can produce a mix that's more powerful and impactful.
You never want an important chorus to sound thin - the music will lose its impact.
In part 4 of the One Month EQ Challenge, I'm going to explain why your mixes sound thin.
I'm going to reveal the common EQ mistake that people make that can lead to thin mixes. You see, a lot of people have been lying to you...
Then I'm going to tell you, step-by-step, how to fix a thin mix in any genre.

Adding: PUtting a Sinesub to get your kick punchier whould not depend on hz but on the key the song is in. But not neccesarily the root note. For instance, if I have a track in C Major, i would never put my sinesub support for the kick as a C note. And that's because the C note hz wise, doesn't have great sub frequencies. Therefore i would pick the 5th of the C major scale, which is G. As some of you know G is the king of sub notes. Just think it's pretty important for people to know, if they didn't already.

dude im stuck like chuck. no matter what i do i cannot produce a mix worthy or even close to what Spotify or radio sounds like. my issue is even taking your advice i notice that in my car/stuidio monitors when listening to Spotify or i tunes etc there is a certain sound that everyone else is producing. I can only mimic 50/50. when listening to both mix and reference track there is obviously a difference. but the difference is crazy. like Spotify mix itunes etc i notice there are hardly any lows and clear but with a sheen on happiness. when i go it sounds too clear with lows without the sheen of happiness.
I saw a lot of your videos and still but i feel like you need to make 1 video from scratch using crap sounds and and turning that into a master piece. i mean from scratch. using basic stock plugins. a simple beat drums and melodies cause dude my brain is fried
thanks for all your tips they are extremely helpful and I know the problem is 50/me and 50/me

My mixes improved significantly when I started using better sounds. I realized what everybody says is true. No matter what you do. You can't get a great track with bad sounds. So it's probably not you mixing skills that are lacking. It's you production mindset. Produce, compose, record with end result in mind and you will find yourself 10 steps ahead of your earlier productions. Greetz

@@jellewierda3828 I appreciate your comment and I feel like that may be a crucial issue for me. If you read this, I'd love to know what VST instruments you would recommend to start for good basic bass, strings, keybords etc? @@nathanstann hi Nathan. A few years ago I bought Native Instruments Komplete Ultimate. It's a sound library with tons of plugins, Synths, strings... You name it. It's in there. I also bought the Izotope Tonal bundle for mixing. But listen I do think you should get an understanding for great sound. Try to remake tracks from others and see where you can improve. A lot of these mixing courses want you to believe it's in the mixing. But for me that is not true. It starts with the production process. Listen to the genre you want to make. Listen to what drum sounds that are being used. Bass, vocals, strings what ever. Try to understand what is going on. Yes there are a lot of techniques you only can here when you know them. Any questions? I would like to help you out. Currently working on a Drum and bass track. Not my style but if listen drum and bass for over 12 hours the other day. Now I get a sense of how this genre works... And than make it your own. Because I do think that is the most important part. Be your own. Goodluck

I used to make music and this was always my problem. I could come up with a decent enough tune, but I never reached a level where it would sound good. I would EQ and compress everything but no matter what I did or how many additional sounds I added, it always sounded thin. In the end, I just recorded stems and gave those to a proper sound engineer at the label and he'd do it for me.

Yes, yes, yes, yesssss ... not sure if you're still watching this comments because it's a rather old video. But I had EXACTLY this problem: My mix lacks of warmth and it sounds »thin«. I had eliminated nearly all frequencies below 50 Hz in the instrument tracks except the base drum. Now I just put in just a tiny bit of low frequency in the other tracks ... and BAM ... warmth is back. Totally logical if you think about it. But if you're a newcomer and everyone tells you »gid rid of the low end to define the kick« ... well ... this happens. Thank you so much for the tip! :)

I find myself sometimes cutting too much bottom end of particular lead sounds and drums.
You try to be on safe side but you remove some of frequencies which make sound having the body.
Also I did make kick to have to short release and sustain.I had snappy kick but no bottom end.You learn from mistakes.Compression and too short sustain on bass notes also impack low end and mix to be thin.

I have noticed whenever I filterout some of the frequencies below 30hz, the bass, Kick, and snares sounds quite good...keeping frequencies below 30 hz kindda dulls the sound of these Instruments. reference good sounding tracks. use LPF and HPF on the track to listen to each frequency range.
compare it to your track, that way you have a good base for what sounds good, you will get a better understanding by using reference tracks

    • @vedasticks

using a spectrum anyliser on the master track, and use that along with your reference track and you can see if your frequency distrubution is similar

Hey there! It could be a variety of things. Your room may be causing you to hear more bass than there actually is, so you end up removing low end when you shouldn't. Our recommendation is to use reference tracks to see what professionally mixed tracks sound like on your setup. That will reveal a lot about what is going on. In addition to that, you may consider adding some treatment or rearranging your mix set up for the best results. Check these videos out!

  • @TheRobGuard
    @TheRobGuard 10 месяцев назад

First off, pick sounds that seem to go hand-in-hand with each other. Like, the kick and bass shouldnt fight each other when recording.
I guess its a linear process. You start recording drums, then add instruments one by one, lastly the vocals.
So you clearly hear how it sounds and if it doesnt sound good then dont use it.
If the recording process works good then mixing will be a lot easier and faster. So focus more on the recording!
