"Have A Cigar" is a parody of a record company executive. Pink Floyd hated the record industry and was especially peeved when their label kept bugging them for a huge follow-up to their Dark Side of the Moon album. The lead vocal is by folk singer Roy Harper. Roger Waters' voice was shot from recording "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," and David Gilmour did not want to sing this, so they asked their friend Harper, who was recording down the hall, to help them out.

_"… Pink Floyd hated the record industry …"_
_"… and David Gilmour did not want to sing this …"_
It's not true that "everyone" band members hated the record industry (…that had helped ruin Syd's creativity and life ...) Roger Waters (The author of music and text of this track and *_Welcome to the Machine_* , as well as the entire _concept_ of WYWH and all the other texts) he had very specific ideas and put them in music and words. Instead David Gilmour had different ideas and never wanted to sing this text and I think he never even proposed this song during his management of the P.F. brand after 1985.
Roger continues, at 79, to propose and sing his creations:

'The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think. Oh, by the way- which one's Pink?'
One of the greatest digs at the record industry ever, well, recorded, ha ha!

Yes, one of the best lines ever, I've seen people spit out their drink when first hearing it way back when.

This is close to the top of my favorite Floyd songs. The funk, the solo. And then the vocals…. There are stories out there why neither David nor Roger did them, but they tried, and live they did. But in the context of the song. The line “By the way which one’s Pink”? And then Roy Harper (who is also referenced in a Led Zeppelin song), sings the song and it’s like the record execs don’t even know, or care. It works so well, and the layers are just spot on. A couple of albums later, some of this theme is explore on The Wall as well. Like the band is just a commodity, In The Flesh particularly. I personally can’t relate exactly as I am not a touring/album making musician. But I think anyone who does that will get all of the songs on this particular album, and the fact that those of us who aren’t even in the industry get it as well, speaks volumes to how good and right on point this is

LoL, back around '96, my son & I were on the road jamming to Pink Floyd music. Stereo was Cranking with a dual 15" Subwoofer. We got to "Have A Cigar", & it's outro. When all the Low end drops out. 😂 I told my son, about 9 at the time, "Oh no, we blew the Subwoofer!" He was bummed for a while until I threw in "Time" & started jamming out again.
    Good times.

Some of my all time favorite lyrics,
"Well, I've always had a deep respect and I mean that most sincere
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think
Oh, by the way, which one's pink?"
Revealing the record executives' complete lack of integrity and cluelessness.

Yep it slides straight into the future, a rock star listening to his bands former glory on the radio, which he then jams along wishing his old friend was here

Don't forget that this classic rock from the 60s & 70s comes from a time a time of deep societal change - The Machine programmed the kid to be a musician with a Star & buy a fancy sports car & sell out ? - Then the Cigar as he is welcomed in perhaps selling out to get aboard the age old corporate GRAVY TRAIN ? the meanings that I picked up since listening to them since first released . They are kinda like RUSH were with the record industry .

It is meant as the 2nd part of them harpooning the old record industry, brilliantly composed and executed as only they can.

You want to hear fun that would be the Relics album. Featuring songs from Syd Barrett.
    Or
Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gather in a cave groove with the Picket.
    It's off the Umaguma album.
The album most played on camping trips late night. Lol

Barrett Floyd. Agrees. Small animals? Just mega mega mega mega trippy. “And the wind cries Maraaaay” … that is the Pict voiced by Roger at the very end. It’s an old Scottish tribe, hence the accent.❤

The end segues into mono to emulate an AM radio and transitions seamlessly into the next song. Well, seamlessly if listened to as a cohesive whole.

The ignorance of the person saying "Which Ones Pink", actually occurred to Rodger Waters while meeting with record executives from one of the record Co big boys!!!
So sickeningly patronizing!!!! "The Bands really fantastic that is what I think" What a line of absolute rubbish!!!!!

These are all things that were said to them by record company execs at one time or another - including one got so unfamiliar with them that he thought "Pink Floyd" was the name of one of the bandmembers.
