Exactly right. Listen to the lyrics again, SC, because Steven absolutely nailed it. It's basically music execs talking to the band and promising them the moon and and the stars, like there's no end to how rich and famous they are going to make them.

Pink Floyd pretty much did what they wanted, especially by the time of this album, when they were so successful nobody could possibly say no to them. Besides, I doubt the labels are that afraid of the music business being criticized. If one of the big bands today, like U2 or Arctic Monkeys or Green Day, wanted to do the same who would try to say no to them?

David Gilmour is one hell of a guitarist. You would never guess that he was born and grew up in a nice stately middle-class family life in Cambridge, England right after World War II. In fact, he played a concert many years ago where he played a solo not all that different from the one in this song. After his set was done on stage, as he went into the wings, a stunned B.B. King came up to him and simply said "Boy; you sure you ain't from Mississippi?"

One of the best Floyd songs, from one of their best albums. I remember when I was about 14 first hearing this whole album,I listened to the whole thing every other day for about a month.
Btw I love your air keyboards ;) good stuff. keep up the Floyd, and you'll open up a whole new world with some of their early stuff, especially the trippy Syd Barret era from the first album. He was their first singer/guitarist who overdosed on acid and went crazy, and stopped wanting to perform live. They brought in David Gilmour to keep the band going, and his voice became the sound of the band, along with his amazing guitar playing. The whole Wish You Were Here album was pretty much about Syd Barrett as a tribute to him. Shine on your Crazy Diamonds is really talking about him in the lyrics.
Extremely good music to smoke up with lol The first time I ever got super duper high smoking weed,me and my friend listened to this whole album and I heard it and fully understood it the right way. It also helps that our weed was laced with some psychedelics .....so yeah, fun stuff.

Roy Harper did the vocals on this track. Pink Floyd were probably the first hand to mess around with tape effects.

Check out the lyrics of all Pink Floyd music - especially songs written by Roger Waters, a lot of it is woke politics - power to the people in other words...cheers.

Hey, I was raised on bebop jazz and rock n' roll (Little Richard definitely hit a chord with me as a youngster)... got a Pink Floyd tape from my mom around 17 (which naturally blew my mind) and then went on to 30 before discovering Parliament-Funkadelic on my own.... and they're now one of my all-time favorite bands. Each of us follows their own path. But loving music and being open to new genres is the key to happiness if you ask me. There is so much to discover and explore and so much to open your heart to.
It's a real treat to see someone genuinely enjoy their first experience of music that has been part of my life for so long. It really feels like listening to it the first time myself.

There is no wrong choice for the next PF song. A few suggestions are Time, Speak to Me/Breathe, and Welcome to the Machine.

There is a funny story behind this song..the singer if the song was a folk singer recording in the studio next to them..they said there voices was just wrecked and could not do the song so a British folk singer Roy harper volunteered the price he charged was season tickets to the cricket matchs. He took the lyrics home overnight changed some of the lyrics the next morning they recorded it in 1 take.

You should probably have done, 'Welcome to the Machine' together with this one. Welcome to the Machine precedes this song on the album. In the 70s the album was king. Many bands wrote albums, meant to be listened to in their entirety, rather than singles. Floyd were definitely one of those. In fact, when music streaming began, they tried to stop companies splitting up their albums into individual songs and, as preposterous as it sounds, they sort of had a point... When listening to a Floyd song, you'll often hear strange sounds or 'additional' music, at the beginning and/or end of a track. This is because, on the album, the songs usually flow into each other, without a break. Or will be linked together with some kind of 'soundscape'. The albums will often tell a story, or have a deep narrative theme. All told in a sonic tour de force. The songs make much more sense when heard an album at a time and they become even more powerful. The best way to listen to Floyd is, to pick an album, I recommend either, 'Dark Side of the Moon' or 'Wish You Were Here' to begin with, find a quiet relaxing space, no phone, no distractions and just listen , from the beginning to the end of the album, no pauses. It really is an incredible experience, I promise you. It may sound overblown but it really can be life changing! Anyway...
tl/dr - Some songs belong together. 'Welcome to the Machine' and 'Have a Cigar' are such a couple of songs. Sound great separately but better together. :)

Roy Harper, a musician friend of the band, did the vocals on this one. There is also a great blues number by Led Zeppelin called Hats Off To Roy Harper, with killer slide guitar. I was also raised on blues, R&B, soul and Motown but also classic rock. Glad you’re getting into it too. There is real treasure in there!
