“Riding the gravy train” means that the record company (whom they are dissing in this song) are taking everything they can from the proceeds of the bands sales. The record company are complimenting them just to milk them for everything they can. Great song and a great reaction, thanks guys.

    • @MikeB12800

Riding the gravy train means selling out, doing whatever it takes to make money instead of making music. The record company is suggesting to make money, not music

    • @johnporter5528

@@MikeB12800 this is my understanding and Riding the gravy train is an old adage here in the UK:
Gravy is money, the band are making lots of money and the record company is “Riding the gravy train” or the “Money train”
Rogers Waters would not write about his band selling out ? he is having a dig at the record company.
Sorry to disagree and no offence

    • @MikeB12800
      @MikeB12800 3 года назад +2

@@johnporter5528 definition i found that I attached to the lyrics - a much exploited source of easy money. Thats how I always took it, label is just using them for the money, dont even realize the band is Pink, think its just a member. The song is about smoozing the band, and “welcoming them to the machine” of the industry. An industry that that Barrett was destroyed by before he actually made it there. They wish he was there. But he keeps shining on

I’m 65 yrs old and saw Pink Floyd live in 1972-73 when I was 17-18 in Madison, Wisconsin when they toured Dark Side of the Moon in the US. This was the music of my generation when it was brand new, and it’s so great that young people are diving into it and can maybe understand my generation a little better. When you see an old person, ask them “did you listen to Pink Floyd?” And you will hear what it meant to us here in the US just coming out of the strict rules of the 50s.

The cover of this album with the guy on fire was photographed here (Hollywood) on a film studio lot. The guy on fire was a professional stuntman wearing a flame retardant suit under his outer suit. They lit him on fire, the wind gusted and burned off his mustache! True story. Roy Harper on vocals. He was recording his album and as the vocal versions of Roger Waters and David Gilmour were not to their liking, they asked Harper if he could sing. By the way, listen to Roy Harper's album "The Unknown Soldier", on which (on some songs) David Gilmour plays the guitar and Kate Bush sings on one. When it comes to "Have a Cigar", it is about the music industry telling a fledgling band that they are going to be great if they play by their rules. "Riding the gravy train" means making easy money, a lot of it, with out much effort.

Something is off about your Michigan State sweat shirt, MSU's colors are green and white, not blue and white. Take it from someone that is from Lansing, Michigan (5 miles from MSU). :D
Awesome video guys! Keep it up!

Now when you have listened to Welcome to the Machine”... the end where the elevator takes you up to the top floor and the party... it starts here with the line, Come on here boy, have a cigar” and the executives sitting there counting future money but have no idea about the band so they ask which one of them is Pink... and they will ride the gravy train if they all pull together as a team = exploit the band..

As much as this album was dedicated to Syd, particularly "Shine on you crazy diamond" I feel this song would have been topical of the band at the time of recording since it was the follow up album to Dark side of the moon. There would have been much pressure from their recording company to follow on that albums success and I wonder what financial cut the band was getting from Dark side of the moon as well.
In a similar time period Queen did a song called "Death on two legs" a no holds bared scathing tribute to their original manager. There where a lot of high profile musician getting ripper off in that period, the labels tightly controlled all the avenues for a performer to reach a wide audience.

While they made a lot of money, it doesn’t mean they weren’t ripped off by the record companies

Guys react on Shine on you crazy dimond, this staff is really insane full of imaginative colours, this song (music) constits in it all kind of human-being's emotional levels. PEACE.

The song is about the insincerity of the record business. All they care about is making money, not about the craft. The two men on the album cover represent two business men shaking hands on a deal. When ever that happens, someone is going to get burned in the deal!
