Let's Talk Cracks! - Wood Turning

  • I like to turn wood with imperfections, such as the cracks in this piece of Plum. These, however, are exceptionally important to the overall look of the piece. The cracks become the focal point even with the lively pink color and tight bark on this live edge bowl.

When I was younger and didn't know any better, I was always told the British have no sense of humor. I avoided British movies for a long time because of that false information. Now, I seek them out because I have found I love British humor! And, Stevan, yours is as good as most! Thank you, I'm glad you like it! 😊

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I've had other people say that about British humour. It sometimes can be a sardonic kind of humour and that tends not to "travel" well. But generally we're a humourous bunch!

Phil, I thank you for this video about cracks. My husband has thrown away so many beautiful pieces of wood because of cracks. Since we have found your most thorough videos with explanations of everything at the time, he has become more vigilant and keeps more of the wood given him. He is 91 years young, and sometime we watch the video many times to remember!, and we play it again and I thank you every Time! This woodturning has kept him active, frustrated some days, but it has been a Godsend for both of us during these rusty years. Kathleen

Plum sure is a pretty wood Phil and this one is no exception. Without the cracks it would be missing a lot. I love the bark on this one and the Howard sure did bring it all together. I hate to fill the cracks but I was forced to for fear of my latest piece flying apart. But it changes the natural look. I am looking at a piece of Plum from Dave but I have had it for awhile and now I am thinking it is going to be as hard as a rock.
Even as hard as yours was the shavings looked great coming off your sharp gouge. That was really fun to watch.
Great video my friend..looking forward to the next one.

Oh, that's my favourite kind of wood, both for turning and carving! It does tend to be very hard when dried, but that has both drawbacks and benefits. I'm currently processing a piece of a trunk that a friend gave me, the core is sadly rotten, but with that, one side of the tree was spalted, which gives the most amazing colours.

I really enjoyed the plum what a gorgeous piece of wood. For the cracks, it looks like you just sanded inside and outside the best. You couldn't and chip some of the shaving to weigh. And the way most of them went all the way through. That is like wow.

I too have turned wood with cracks so many times .... some times when there are large cracks I fill them with blue epoxy mostly sometime red or yellow
I like the purple in the plum wood so much , I did make my wife a jewelry box out of Plum . The colors are so nice
Remember the picture of the beer mug out of plum ,had a piece fly out on me ....put it back with blue epoxy .
Your piece is so nice with the cracks , adds character to it . The plum you have as yellow to it on the outside , my plum does not .
    keep on turnin'
