Phil the nature man, Please never stop bringing nature into your house. Bless may you be for your love in wood, from South Africa, we love your insperational work, as you have changed our veiw of looking at wood turning. Thanks again
What I love about this video is that Phil tells you the speed he is turning and exactly which gouges and sanders he uses. It's almost like a cookbook so that I can try to make some beautiful bowls like his!
👍😁🇦🇺🦘Like your commentary, just adds that extra bit that also makes it a tutorial for me as a beginner. Thank you for sharing your wonderful presentations.
I'm so fortunate to have the opportunity to turn so many woods I simply would not have access to if not for my generous viewers. This stuff does not grow anywhere near me, that's for sure! 😊
Another piece from the master. That makes it a masterpiece, doesn't it? In my book it does. Phil, you don't know how hard we work to keep coming up with new superlatives. But this piece deserves them. Best!
Fantastic as usual Phil, really pretty wood, and relaxing to watch you bring a beautiful bowl out of a piece of nature! You have a special talent! Rick.
I really enjoy your channel because you describe everything you are doing in the process. A great learning experience for layman like me. Super fascinating to watch.
A big part of the fun is your sharing your thoughts with us as you work. A gorgeous little bowl. Thank you to Dan for sending and to you for sharing. See you soon.
That is awesome, Kelvin! I love walking into the shop when a piece is already mounted, my gouge is sharpened and I have a hot cup of coffee with me so I can just stand and look at the piece for a few minutes. 😊 Have a good time, Sunday!
Phil, I've made a few "nice" funnels but if it doesn't look to bad I color up some epoxy and finish the bottom like that and sometimes it looks like I planned it that way. One old time furniture maker told me that one sign of a good craftsman was knowing how to repair your mistakes without it being noticeable. It's fun trying anyway.
Hallo from an old (in age) turner from South Africa. Ideas: I always stabilize my bark with thin CA glue before my final cut - being careful not to let it penetrate the wood itself on the endgrain. Works well for me. If you want a darker colour, first apply a thin coat of BOILED linseed oil. Follow (if you want) with a coat of shellac and then the polish. I suppose it is carrying coals to Newcastle, but nevertheless I love to share ideas. Nice bowl btw. Regards.
Your right Phil, E.T. phone home. If you wanted the bowl to look walnut toned maybe you could have used walnut oil to start off with. The sapwood helped to contrast with the grain. Cool looking. Have a wonderful weekend y'all.
Phil, I turn mesquite all of the time because we have an abundant supply here in Texas. When the wood is greenish the finish will be light but over time it will darken. If you want a piece to be dark just leave your wood out in the weather for about two years and let it get old and dry. It's a little dustier when turning but has a really nice darker finish. Just my 2 cents.
That was a lot smoother turn....and the colors really popped out beautifully. High marks for keeping the bark edge intact (the highlight for me)! Kudos to your fans who can provide the stock for these works of art. Take care and stay healthy.
Awesome little bowl Phil again I love the live edge you leave and I really like it that you tell us what you are going to do I think this will help me a lot when I start turning thanks for sharing. James
Believe me, I'd love to eat chocolate again but it gives me a migraine. And so does a lot of other foods. Can't even take migraine meds, just Ibuprofen or Tylenol.
I turn mesquite all the time (west Texas) and it’s a great wood. My go to finish danish oil natural. It really makes that heart wood a toasted brown. Well done
Phil, very nice work. I hope you don't mind another viewer suggestion. When I do a bark edge bowl, I like to stabilize the bark with thin CA after roughing out the outside. I just apply at the seam between the bark and the wood, let it dry for a few minutes and then start cutting the hollow. Then once I get the inside defined, I'll stabilize again from the inside. Getting the entire cut surface of the bark wet with thin CA does two things...first it helps prevent chunks of bark leaving the workpiece, and second, it stiffens the fibers in the bark so you can get a cleaner cut when your gouge is exiting the cut. I hope this makes sense.

Excellent, thank you! I'm so happy you are considering some of the more natural pieces for your turnings, too! 😊
What I love about this video is that Phil tells you the speed he is turning and exactly which gouges and sanders he uses. It's almost like a cookbook so that I can try to make some beautiful bowls like his!
I'm glad it's useful, thank you! 😀

Hello, always good to watch a master work.
Howdy, Christopher! Thanks for watching! 😊
Mesquite is the Rosewood of the American Southwest - it's of the same botanical family - the Fabaceae or Pea family. A truly beautiful wood!
Thank you for the information! 😊
Thanks for the tips! Fortunately, I didn't need any of them on this piece. When turners make a mistake we call it a design opportunity. LOL!
Love it! And I love this finish on the mesquite!
😊
Love that cute little bowl Phil.
😊
Great detail and finish. Love it!
Thanks a bunch!
Very nice....maybe I should head to the desert next and look for mesquite for next trip around.
LOL! It's a great wood to turn, Dennis. I think you will enjoy it!
