- I'm back!! Sorry I haven't been very active on here recently. I had some time away, but I'm now back in the workshop and will be bringing awesome videos every week.
Dad and I were cutting logs for the winter when he noticed the amazing spalting inside this piece of Ash. I kept it to one side until I could figure out what to do with it.
The bowl has been sanded to 1500 grit and finished with 3 coats of Danish oil. Let me know what you think of the design! I couldn't have done it without the Axminster 400mm Button Jaws, link below.

Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

I do so love a good spalting! Seriously, there is so much going on that it almost looks like sheet music for a symphony. But the best thing about it, was that it had enough remaining integrity to be finished and survive, and it looks great.

@@busettychandra Hi! Spalting is just a fault line between two fungal colonies, that start to breakdown the wood, it doesn't weaken the wood if only left a short time. Eventually it would eat the wood away and increase decay. What was your opinion of the rounded, wobble bottom 🤔 ? 😃🪵👍

Good seeing you, hope you are well. The grain and spalting are perfect and the shape of course is different, but nice. I imagine for obvious reasons, (to me that is), would be perfect for fresh fruit. God Bless!

@@HarrySmithShorts I was skeptical of the base until I realized it's basically a calabash bowl on the bottom with straight sides at the top. Can't say I loved it or hated it but I was definitely impressed by it enough to try that myself soon. Looking forward to your next thing!
