Woodturning - $10 Piece of Walnut into Two Projects Worth $$$....?

  • Project 1:
In this video I make an 8 ball using American Walnut, Holly, and African blackwood. It was surprisingly a lot more difficult than expected, and took a lot of measuring and double checking to make sure the 8 was in the correct place.
I'm really please with how it turned out. Its been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with Danish oil. I may go back and put a coat of wax on it at some point, but I'm not sure how I will achieve my normal mirror finish as the wood pieces used to hold it kept making the wood.
    Project 2:
So the plan for this video was to turn a Christmas tree with last year's Christmas tree. However, when I started to turn this wood it was splitting and tearing all over the place so I decided to keep turning until I got to a usable piece of wood. For some reason, the idea to turn it into a honey dipper came to my mind, and then I thought it'd be a great idea to turn a honey pot. It was totally unexpected for me as my plan went completely out of the window but I decided to just go with it. Sometimes my best work comes from moments like this.
The pot is made from American black walnut that has been sanded to 10000 grit and finished with sanding sealer and wood wax. The lid is also black walnut and the handle is made from Zebrano.
    Which is your favourite?

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. Some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest, so when using any tool or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines first.
And Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practice. The gloves I wear are tight-fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. DO NOT copy my actions if you feel unsafe doing so.

    Which piece is your favourite?
The 8 ball, or the honey pot 😁

Both projects are amazing in their own way! It is very difficult to single out anything. 10/10 for both.
      💯👏
p.s. When I prepare something from wood for food, I impregnate the area that comes into contact with the food with natural beeswax. When turning, it is very convenient to use a piece of genuine leather to rub into the rotating product, pressing firmly. 😉

It’s soothing watching you work. Your machines are amazing as well as your quality of craftsmanship. My husband, W. Brien Pierce was a furniture builder, and loved his working with wood. He did carving as a kid. We were from Lewes, DE. He passed on 6 years ago in July 2017. God bless you and your family. Thank you

Both very nice Harry, I’m leaning towards the number 8 ball though, the contrast with different soecies of wood with the finish on is simply wonderful.
    I’d pay $20 for it

Great video HS, I like the 8-ball, though it is more decorative than the honey pot, which has daily practical uses. Maybe if I drank tea and used honey often, that would be my fav. Cost? Worth?...good question, depends on the demographics and how fast(badly) you want to see them, I guess. As an artist myself and a 'maker of things' (and also a fiction short story writer) making things is the easy part, marketing and selling is an entirely different game imo.

Since many times I have been behind the 8 ball, I'll have to choose the Honey Pot. But in actuality, I like both turnings. Very nicely done. However, when I see gloves being used in wood turning, it makes me cringe. I've seen too many industrial accidents caused by gloves. Thanks for sharing.
