Woodturning - The Biggest Aspen I’ve Ever Seen!

  • In this woodturning and wood art video, I turn a piece of the largest Aspen tree I’ve ever seen into a giant pedestal bowl. I turned the Aspen wood in its wet state, using traditional woodturning techniques to get the rough shape, then let it sit in wood shavings until it was dry enough to finish. It was very, very wet! In fact, I had to do a bit of work on the lathe afterwards because it was getting a thin rust veneer on the bed!
    Thanks for watching, liking, commenting, sharing and…if you’re not already…subscribing! It all really helps my channel out!
    This piece isn’t for sale, but lots of my other pieces are: www.etsy.com/shop/caswoodcraft

    Nicely done. Impressive.

    Your turning turned out great. To me it actually looks bigger than the log was when you started. Great work.

    Beautiful and a lot of hard work and patience. When you started putting the chips around it I thought you might be going for a “raku” type charring effect. That might be too risky after all your work.

    It’s beautiful, but why didn’t you put a finish on it?

    I'm surprised that you didn't put a finish on this piece. Will the wood hold up without it. I don't know anything about Aspen.

      Ah, you were watching carefully! Love it. I didn't put a finish on it because I absolutely loved the the whiteness of the wood and every finish out there will, at the least, impart a yellow/orange cast to it. That looks great on brown woods...really brings out their essence...but with a white wood like Aspen, it can turn the wood into a very different color. What I may do eventually is put a lacquer spray finish on it.

    Your chain saw needs sharpening and the log appears to be white birch not Aspen Aspen bark is smooth green and white wood

    • @CASWoodcraft
      @CASWoodcraft  9 месяцев назад

      You're right about the saw. Been putting it off. You could be right about the wood type too. I didn't see the tree before it came down, but the owner was confident it was an Aspen and the tree guys who took it down told him it was the biggest Aspen they'd ever taken down, so...??

    You need to sharpen your chainsaw.😂

      You are right about that. I've never done it and the process seems intimidating. :)
