- Turning wet wood is a joy, and this oak crotch piece (which is a customer commission) was indeed a joy to turn.
In the video, I take the piece from a rough cut piece of branch into a super looking bowl using a 1/2" bowl gouge and 3/8" bowl gouge, plus a 3/8" spindle gouge.
Wet wood can be troublesome, particularly if there is some spalting creeping in as there was in this piece.
During the process, I also use a custom made curved too rest (available from The Woodturning Shop) and a vacuum chuck to help.

So glad to be able to see you turn something again. Love the series about what tools you use and why, but I do love listening to you talk through a turn.
Fantastic job Martin..
Nice work Martin, as always. And good to have you back again.
Hi Martin, good to see you back on RUclips and seeing you make something beautiful from what was potentially a piece of “firewood”. Always inspiring watching your videos, hopefully there will be more in the coming weeks.
Wonderful to see you back in action. Beautiful piece of oak. Best wishes from Ohio, USA.
Nice to see a turning video from you again. Nice work with that piece
Nice one! Hope you are well x
Looks beautiful Martin
Martin, I've always been impressed by your turning artistry, but on this piece, I was taken by the quality of your video production. Great set up and you have a great facility for managing the multiple cameras while working. Well done!
Great possibilities contained in the block. You revealed some beautiful color and an absolutely beautiful bowl. Always enjoy watching your finishing process and the adjustments made based on what the wood offers. Thank you for sharing this one. Always a pleasure.
Nice piece
Very nicely done. Liked the way you did video, not too long but covered all basics.
Great to see you back, Martin! Well done dealing with that lovely, but punky, wood.
Great piece Martin and thank you for sharing. Great color and great finish. Cheers. Mike Doyle
Hi Mike! Many thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice piece of turning, and a great finish. I have a birch crotch I need to do shortly and your video is a good help. 👍 Ta.
Thanks for watching John. Good to hear from you.
What a lovely bowl
Nice job, well done! On seeing the punk section thought u might end with a "foo paw" . Nice really nice!!!!
i love the look. you have all ways impressed me with you skills. thank you sir
Very nice job. And i use Your products are really great! Greetings from Croatia
I love it! I do have a question. What will your customer do about the eventual warping as it dries? I am curious as to how you personally dry the pieces you are turning for yourself and others. Great video and a wonderful piece.
I was going to ask the same thing. Oak here, is really bad about cracking while warping. White oak or Red. It always cracks with me... ;)
The customer is aware of the possibility of warping and cracking. However, with evenly turned walls and a gradual drying process (it is wrapped in newspaper) over a couple of months, cracking and warping can be minimised.
HI m Laban beautifuly turned. looks super good.
Hi Martin hope you are well. As the bowl was a "wet" turn do you not need to pack it in a bag with shavings to allow it to dry completely and will it warp? Give my regards to Les when you see him.
Since this was wet wood , won’t it crack or warp? Glad to see your making videos again. I recently bought some of your dyes to start experimenting with. Thank you
Brilliant Martin, welcome back to the dark side!😁👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎
How did you keep the soft areas from dishing out when you sanded?
Tnx for sharing Martin.
I love pieces like this (punky/spalted/almoust rotten) even tho they can be a pain in the a$$ sometimes 😂
P.s i kind of miss the asmr live thingies you used to do with music and everything 👍
Any hope of doing those again??
Thanks for watching , Thomas. I would love to have the time for a fly on the wall love again with the background music. Very busy with teaching on Saturdays at the moment. Maybe in a few weeks when it calms down again I'll have a chance.
hi cheers
Hi Martin... good to see you back sharing again... Quick question, when you turned the piece around and mounted on the tenon, it seemed to be quite a bit off center. When I get that because of the soft tenon, I try to return the outside again to true it up to the inside. Since this is a wet piece, I know things move a bit as you go... So how much out of round do you normally allow before you "fix" it?
Thanks,
Richard Parker
Very timely video, thank you for sharing. I’ve acquired some tree trunks, had my chain saw sharpened and replaced my band saw blade so I’m ready to turn. Martin, what grit do you use to sharpen your gouges? 🌞
hi i hope it dint crack,,,,,,,,but great job
G’day G’day
Beautiful piece Martin. That lump must have given you a good workout. What's happened to your diamond belt on proedge? Cheers Geoff
Did it crack…….?????
Nope. All good.
Will it warp because it was wet
Yes, I know, and so does the cutomer.
Please practice safety and always use a face shield when turning.
Very nice piece of work, must get a vacuum chuck. Do you sell them Martin?
Are there any issues putting a finish on wood that has not finished drying out?
Well done Martin, nice to see a video from you! Really enjoyed this one, especially seeing you handle the punkiness left from that branch.
Thanks for sharing!
- Seth
Thanks for watching, Seth! Glad you found it useful.
Martin, glad you mentioned the Tannin stains. I 've almost quit turning Oak, especially wet/green oak because it takes so long to clean up everything to make sure any metal doesn't rust. And how thin did your turn down the walls for drying and minimum warpage?
Great looking bowl Martin nicely done 👌👍
Very nice Martin
Cheers, Charlie.
Glad to see you back on Martin ,very nice bowl as always
Regards tim
Very nice bowl Martin. Good to see you back to the heart of your skills 🇦🇺👍
Well turned Martin. Well done 👏
