Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music - which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock- earned the band a passionate cult following.
Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” - their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill - and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.
The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans - showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

Possibly the most underrated metal band ever.
like rush
Possibly the most underrated band ever.
Yes,them and Fates Warning
there is a truth here
You are so right.. anybody that disagrees.. Is well... So 24HOURS AGO..RIGHT
My dad put his studio headphones on my mother's stomach while she was pregnant with me. He mostly played Savatage through them. Once I was born, he would play this song through his speakers and I would fall right asleep. Been a metalhead ever since.
Cool legacy....his a legend 4 doin that 4 you
I'd call that music education
Awesome song 🎵
Your dad is a great father !!!
This is my cousin lead singer awesome to hear!
This is not just a tune, it's an era.
So so true..!!
Tampa bay pride
🤘🤘
sure was a great era to listen to metal i loved it
You are so right in so many ways.
This band in my opinion never got the respect they deserved. Chriss was such an amazing guitarist. He should have been on guitar magazine covers as awesome as he played.
Holy truth my friend. THEY ARE METAL LEGEND
We all know that fame is not related to quality
I agree that fame does not equal quality but the thing I don't understand is that Savatage was around the whole time when Heavy Metal was huge and there were many bands that were insanely popular. Savatage in my opinion should have been huge but they did make it huge as Trans Siberian Orchestra.
best metal band ever.....RIP Criss
Criss is legend. Never to be forgotten.
Zack is one hell of a vocalist, but the legacy and Identity of the band is in Jon's iconic, unmistakable & epic voice.
It took me quite a while to warm up to Zack's vocals, but I eventually did. But if it comes down to picking one or the other, absolutely Jon.
I wish they did a few more things where they both sang on songs as they started doing these multiple voice choir sort of thing and it would have made sense to have jon be some of the vocals instead of layering Zak over and over plus they could do this live.
one of the greatest band ever in my opinion
+Tim Meding well the band they turned into (Trans-Siberian Orchestra) are better.IMO
+Jd Dehl
TSO is great but no like Savatage way more.
+King Diamond alright.
+Jd Dehl
Its a personal thing I was a huge Criss Oliva Jon Oliva fan back in the 80s.
+King Diamond yeah I got ya...Savatage are pretty good.
I was in high school, in the early 2000's, when I listened to Edge Thorns for the very first time. My friends used to sugest some heavy metal songs writing in the back of my school book during the school classes, to download in mp3. I was initiating in heavy metal world. Still one of my fav songs... brings me good old memories from that time. Everytime I hear Edge of Thorns in somewhere I stop whatever I'm doing to sing the whole song and to watch the movie that passes through my mind... this is a master piece and deserves respect. It's a very beautiful song! RIP Criss Oliva forever!!!
Criss Oliva had the perfect guitar tone. What an amazing musician!
Yeah love is tone 🚀🚀
He would have definitely transcended the "80's Metal" tag that took out many great pre-Grunge guitar players. Would likely STILL be making great music in Savage today, had he lived.
He would have been up there a long with Dimebag as a guitar player. Guy was a fav in my book 🤘
I'm glad to see all the positive
Don't know which is better, Zach's vocals, Criss's riffs, Johnny's bass, Steve's beats, or Jon's piano. I'ma just go with all of the above
Not a dull moment with Savatage. Masterpiece after master piece. Definitely one of the underrated gems: ruclips.net/video/2eNBk7QrCeQ/видео.html
@@madeofmetal7432 definitively Jon Oliva over Zach's vocals
shut up
This band became an absolute force, when they added Zac on vocals. Jon is a great singer but there's a loss of...cohesiveness with the style he uses. I saw them in 1988 on the Hall of the Mountain King tour. Great band! Those vocals were just not palatable to a 19 year old MetalHead. My brain was not ready for "prog' yet, I guess.
All good if it's savatage
This band is a perfect example of having truckloads of talent not leading to worldwide success
at the time there was a paradigm shift happening, hair bands were on the way out and grunge was the thing even tho this band predates hair bands
Truly amazing talent .. both Zakk or and Jon on vox...
Agree with you.. they deserved far better.
You know they are also Trans Siberian Orchestra, with worldwide success?
@@mommykillz definitely aware of it. Thank you though.. appreciate it.
So true
one of the best guitar solo´s ever.
RIP Criss you was one hell of a guitar!!
Such an incredible band, with a huge amount of talent. They went beyond music. Savatage wrote so many emotional songs, good riffs, great solos, fantastic melodies and deep lyrics. Their music always gave me goosebumps and it's a shame they did not became that successful.
He who received least, deserved it the most (R.I.P Criss).
I was 3 cars back on that horrible day heading to the same music festival as Chriss. We did not know it was Chriss until that night when word spread at the festival (Live Stock in Zepherhills, Florida). Lot's of shots held aloft for Chriss that weekend... My wife cried the entire 2 days... I still can't play Savatage around her to this day all these years later. ♥
I remember a blog about a confession on this.I couldnt recall the names but the man said that he insisted on Criss coming for the festival that night to stay at their van.
Sou do Brasil e não sabia que o vocalista dessa banda tinha morrido em 1996, agora em 2024 que soube.😢
I play guitar I always liked his style . He found his own sound in the music world the way each guitarist should. No band should sound alike . R.I.P. Criss
25 yrs without Criss
who knows how many songs like this, he could have gifted us
GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
Diego
:(
Truth and still hurts today.
simply one of the best solos ever wrote my opinion
+kevin becker I was just thinking the same thing
The solo on comfortably numb is universally hailed as the #1 solo ever, but this is right there!!
It's in my top three along with Comfortably Numb and Dirty Laundry(Joe Walsh on first solo Steve Lukather on the second)
This solo has EVERYTHING - Criss -THE MAN
@@nostrathomas2437 I never knew Lukather played the second solo. I already loved Dirty Laundry since Joe Walsh is the man. Now I appreciate the song even more.
ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!
Without Savatage, Progressive/Symphonic Metal would look very different today. Its a shame they never got as big as they deserved. R.I.P Criss
Um monstro Chriss Oliva
Yeah I always view Savatage and Blind Guardian as front-runners in the whole area of power/symphonic style of prog metal. Both have great lyrics and instrumentation.
@@djdrack4681 Savatage weren't power metal. Never had that kind of riffs, melodic lines neither the vocals
Let's go Brandon!
The most criminally underrated band ever. In my top three though 🤘
2019 ? God I miss the 80’s 90’s rock/metal. RIP Chris
so much.........
2020..
Feel you
RIP Criss Oliva. Another fantastic guitarist gone too young
I had to listen to this song over a million times to get enough
Metal Head, and still a Rocker till the day I die. 👁🖤🤘
Zack's best Vocal performance ever!!
At the end of August in 1996, Savatage and Bleeding hearts played in a back yard for my mom's 40th birthday. 15months later my mom would pass from cancer. Everyone loved my mom. She was the best. Rock in peace to my mom and the Oliva brothers.
This song is so powerful... Criss put his heart and soul and then some into his final release
@Jo Blow You must be thinking of "Handful Of Rain" because I saw Chris play this song in concert and met him afterward.
So different, a metal band playing in the jungle! Nothing castles, swords, blood, warriors...just everglades. I like it!
Savatage are the most under appreciated metal band of all time. It is such a pity Chriss passed away so tragically. I hate people like Mustaine telling us how important he is and what a great guitarist he is. There is so much better. And here it is.
A stones throw from Criss's apartment
@@michael88863 Hey man don't be dissing Dave! Least he's not as bad as Kerry.
Jungle is bizzare... but it was always a problem that people from music video industry were focused on madonna or britney spears so they had no idea how to do movie clips for metal...
They're dressed like they belong in castle. In any case, great
f$%king song.
An unreal song from a classic album.
+TheTrueFortress Perfect comment. A song larger than life.
One of the best r.i.p Chris
"..but I don't think about you anymore..."
Great piece of metal ballad. Great piano intro... good riff... and this trubadour-like vocal... love it
This band is now my top favorite metal bands, of all time!
This song never gets old. Criss alone can tell a story with his amazing solos. RIP Criss.
But got renewed by Powerwolf :>
I got this cassette when I was a kid at a flea market for cheap, listened to this song all the time and was the only one out of all of my friends that not only liked this song but knew who Savatage was. It's tough being an old school metal head in Michigan, all the cool young musicians like me are rare, scattered and dying off slowly.
I know how u feel, Do u know Dog's D'Amour, You will like what you hear as well
Heard this song on the radio after knowing about Savatage through an Uncle that was in the music scene in the South at the time and thought some band was ripping off Savatage big time. Later found out after Criss died that it was Savatage who did this song.
amen to that not many sava where I live eather makes me mad. not many stores carry them.. if I was a metal shop owner carry a little bit of of thegood band
You wanna jam online?
play on
I was just a two years old girl when Edge of Thorns was released but it is one of the best songs and albums of my life. Thank you Savatage for the music you guys created! 🤘🏻
Savatage forever ❤
Criss Oliva ...in guitar heaven with the other guitar gods!
The death of Randy Rhoads made me listen to guitar differently. I was 9. His death made me curious as to who he was. And it made me want to play. Stevie Ray's death made me appreciate the blues way more. But Chris' death. Made me put the guitar down for a moment and just cry. Chris was that artist to me and my life. He just never got the respect that was due. Still makes me sad. But also because of Chris, it has made me pick my guitar up, wipe my tears and really work on technique and tone..
Do you realize that Randy and Criss only died about 40 miles apart from each other? Randy's plane crash was in Leesburg Florida, Criss's car accident was near Zephyrhills Florida
@@MCO2ATL2DTWby777 yep. That’s why is yay away from Florida . And the whole South in General..🤣
This song is so epic....and 90's metal videos are the greatest. R.I.P. Criss Oliva
I don't think about you anymore... I'll just write you this song.
Haha
Haha. Well he wasn't until someone asked "How's Stephanie" and so he realized she was dead to him and wrote the song. Maybe?
obviously it's from the perspective of a person in denial
@@michaelhudson2912 I think we all know that.
@@SouthernSkeptic Damn you Southern Skeptic, I've grown weary of your skepticism but I can't resist your southern charm
One of the top 5 best handsdown metal OR rock bands EVER and Chriss Oliva was definitely one of MY biggest personal influences musically and to this very day is still sorely missed!!!!
I've been a fan of this band from 1999 when I discovered them. All this time, their songs still get to me. I do not know how or why, they just do and move me. Amazing as much as it is bewildering...
Georgi, same thing here ... this takes me back to the good old days when i was a kid. They still move me and get to me. The golden days of the 90s
In South Africa we did not get alot of exposure to lots of music so I have just discovered this band and I think they are one of the best 10 of the 80s.I am 52 yo by the way a product of the 70s and 80s. Remind me a bit of Queensryche.
they sure are amazing, sound is real cool man
92 for me, my Brother introduced them to me. RIP Mike. ❤
From the opening note - you knew it was going to be epic and it just soars higher and higher and higher. Unbelievable.
Criss Oliva, RIP. Captivating tone and solos.
Best band I ever known personally.. From the start and. Never ver will be an equal.. For especially CRISS..i miss dearly..
Thanks very much..
"Edge Of Thorns"
An offering of reasons
We put them all in play
A covering of treasons
That one by one we let slip away
A solitary dancer
So lost upon her stage
I have seen you on the edge of dawn
Felt you there before you were born
Balanced your dreams upon the edge of thorns
But I don't think about you anymore
A study made from winter
Of summers long ago
And dreams that used to glitter
Safely now hidden under snow
And so we end the chapter
And let the stage lights fade
I have seen you on the edge of dawn
Felt you there before you were born
Balanced your dreams upon the edge of thorns
But I don't think about you anymore
I have seen you on the edge of dawn
Felt you there before you were born
Balanced your dreams upon the edge of thorns
But I don't think about you anymore
Anymore
I don't think about you anymore
Anymore
I don't think about you
I don't think about you
I don't think about you
Anymore, anymore, anymore
I HEARD THIS BAND A WEEK AGO, AND I CANT QUIT THEM OF MY MIND
I loved savatage since the begin. Chris was an incredible player great tone and great sense of melody. I was always SO disappointed that he never made on it on guitar magazine or any articles. he was up there with Rhodes, lynch and others of the 80s
I could swear he was on the cover of one once at least.
I love his beautiful voice, the band is amongst my top ten band....
This is the kind of stuff that if I'm high af and hanging out with other "metal heads" and its loud I don't even care who the band is or how big their hits were, its all fuckin great. This guitar player definitely locks it down so no matter how big the songs are on the charts the band at least sounds awesome.
At the time making money and rocking the charts was considered the main goal but when your legacy is a shit ton of solid songs that no fan of metal is ever gonna ask you to turn off... that's a fuckin Win.
CHRISTOPHER 'CRISS' MICHAEL OLIVA! 🌹🎸🌹🤘🌹
ALLWAYS a good video morning noon or night.. Even during a hurricane.. Or a Florida earthquake.!!!
The greatest Band ever
Still listening to this badass jam in 2020
27 years and it still holds up well.
+1
Listening n 2021
I remember me and my sister were driving in a car at night, we didn't know the road.. and then this song came up. She is still afraid of this intro :D
💪🤘
I remember I was in a very cool rock bar in Berlin where the owner looks like Rob Halford, I had got married that morning in Basel-Switzerland, we went to Berlin to celebrate later and while we were there sitting and drinking this video started on the TV, since then I love Savatage.
🤣 Creepy intro!
Classic Metal Masterpiece From One Of Florida's Finest. Savatage
Really great song. The vocals, the guitar, the bass and drums are outstanding! This is s very underrated band.
i have seen you on the edge of dawn. felt you here before you were born. now etched your dreams upon the edge of thorns. but I don't think about you anymore.
Than Mustaine.....your high
Underrated...one of the best of all time!!!
The music is timeless. I was lucky enough to see Savatage live in this line-up in Berlin, I think even several times. Now I hear more deathcore and something like that, but Savatage are the heroes of my youth. Zach Stevens is also a great singer!!!!
“Thank you!! And now for our last song of the night. A song about someone I don’t think about anymore.”
33 people are standing at the edge of thorns. But 2000 of us don't think about them anymore :/
one of my favorite bands. Was cool to hear Chris give a nod out to Savatage during TSO show last night.
Wow this good feeling of the 90s... unbreakable
Best metal band ever! I was lucky enough to see them in concert once. I will never forget it. RIP Criss - you were the best!!!
This whole album 🔥
Such an incredible album. Savatage had a few albums with signs of TSO taking shape. But, this album was the one that really seemed to be where the idea of TSO really started to come through. But, I digress...I think if Savatage could re-make this video, they'd do it differently, as well. It didn't rise to the level of this song. As someone else stated, this is just one more example of a band with an incredible amount of talent that never got their due.....(for all the wrong reasons, as usual). I'll bring up TSO again, in the sense that TSO's success put a big spotlight on Savatage, for the fans that never knew who Savatage was. For those of us who lived through the industry in during the 80's and 90's, we got to live through and witness something magical...
R.I.P. Criss Oliva - great underrated talent
Loved this band so much...still have the Edge of thorns Cd ❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥🔥god miss those days so much...
One of the best bands ever. And a rest in forever peace to Savatage guitarist Chris Oliva and as well to his wife Dawn who never recovered from the heartache of losing her husband and was found dead in her home in 2005. It’s a travesty that the drunk driver who killed Chris only served 18 months in prison and he had 7 prior DUI convictions.
This intro gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it...
Fantastic atmosphere
Criss' solo is like an entire song on its own, just incredible. It's all feels!
Great riffs amazing vocals! A classic forever
I believe that keyboard intro was 'inspiring' Dream Theater's Forsaken :D
Such a unique guitar tone, not overdistorted, not overcompressed. And the solo is a pure masterpiece. Legends 🔥
An amazing song from an amazing band who never received the recognition they deserved. RIP Chriss Olivia, I look forward to hearing you on the other side.
Indeed mate, The Oliva brothers kick ass. Definitely one of the heavy metal duos of all time. In fact, Savatage is one of the best and most underrated bands ever: ruclips.net/video/2eNBk7QrCeQ/видео.html
Holy shit this is such an amazing song, I remember hearing this when it first came out on the radio and buying the CD the same day. I was blown away.
Love this!
one of the best bands ever, that just proved a negative correlation between talent and success.
heavy metal gem.
Most underrated guitarist , r.i.p. Criss
not many people know that this is TSO but it is and i have loved them since the beginning.
So sad to lose Chriss Olivia but so proud of their journey and how it grew with me in character and intensity and genius......I hope they continue forever
Misspelled Criss
all-time classic song, for every serious Rock club
Rest In Peace Chris your tone and talent are well respected
One of my favourite Sava album...Criss r.i.p. what a guitarist!!
Masterpiece!!!

One of my fav tracks...OUTSTANDING 🎸🇬🇧🤘
Been a fan ever since seeing them on Headbangers ball in 1991. This will always remain my 3rd favorite album of theirs..Powerful song and Zach's vocals are perfect for this album
One of my biggest inspirations, still love playing along with some of the greatest
Sensacional!! adoro Savatage!
Damn what a amazing song & band .....R.I.P. Criss Oliva :-)
I have been listening to Savatage since the late eighties. What a tragedy to have lost Chriss at the prime of his career. I bawl my eyes out whenever I listen to When the Crowds are Gone. RIP to Chriss and all those who have left us way too young . You are sorely missed.
Rip criss and Brandon Lee and river 1993
This is the best guitar solo since 1993
What a song! Magnificient intro and guitar solos, impressive vocals... Fully "ear"gasm!
Perfect song
What a song...
Such a great/powerful song! That whammy squeal during the solo, love it: 4:00
Banda sensasional.
Awesomeness through and through.....great band! Live in Tampa's Ybor City in the 90s; great memories.
How I adored watching Jon Oliva's Pain their show this year and 2 years ago!
E-A-R-G-A-S-M!!!
I was so amazingly glad that they played this song, it is one of my favorites all times!
It was so much fun, to sing and dance together with the other people that were enjoying the show as well.
We love and miss you Criss 2019...
