Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music - which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock- earned the band a passionate cult following.
Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” - their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill - and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.
The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans - showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

Let's keep introducing this metal gem to the new generations. Don't let it die.
Another 80s kid.
I am a 2005 kid and listening savatage is still alive
Dad always hammered this band into my head.
I was born in 96. My parents and games like guitar hero and Brutal Legend introduced me to rock.
I just heard it this week. And then heard it another 1000 times. And now my voice might be going out
Power Metal
Savatage is criminally underrated. Criss was one heck of a guitar player!!!
That Savatage cassette is the most valuable piece in the treasure chest
Literally that thing is as rare as rocking horse shit.
@@zedddddful3:14
@@zedddddfulI have the cassette, the CD and vinyl and I would never sell them.
0:46 - Absolutely a killer guitar tone! Dark and totally awesome. We miss you Criss!
👌
It's 2022 and Savatage still sounds amazing.
Yes definitely
One of my favorite bands.
One of the bands that ignited my lifelong love of heavy metal \m/ \m/
So true CBChamberlain
Still waiting for the Mountain King to call us home.
Criss Oliva OMG! Probably the most underrated guitar player in metal history. Like Randy, taken from us way too soon. Ranks right up there with the very best.
Along with Chuck of Death..
@@vanityrage1984 Chuck isn't underrated. He's good, but he's definitely not underrated.
You think about this:Savatage, if you really listen to them closely, tend to remind you of Ozzy, at least in the way they did their music. They're definitely Heavy Metal, of course, but they don't sound like any of "The Big Four" (That being, of course, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, or Slayer). Savatage were never THAT heavy, but they were still Heavy Metal.
Over the years, we've seen different styles of Metal come along, but nothing-NOTHING!!!-beats the classic sound of what I call regular, old-fashioned, Heavy Metal!
Probably he's the reason I took my guitar & Smashed it to a billion pieces I could never play like that man if practiced for the next 50 years. My personal opinion he's one of the most underrated guitarists I've ever heard. This the pinnacle of heavy metal!!! JEALOUS that's me😩🤐😟
I remember seeing them on their Dungeons Are Calling era tour at L'Amours in Brooklyn or at City Gardens in Trenton where they played with Testament and Nuclear Assault. I always made sure I was on the left of the stage where Cris would usually be, sitting with my mouth wide open and in a trance like state. I've seen some great guitarist in my club days but Cris was just one of my favorites. It's hard to believe it's been nearly 30 years that the metal community lost a true icon.
Damn those Oliva brothers were gifted with incredible musicianship, weren’t they?
Jon is one of the original founders of Trans Siberian Orchestra and tours with them.
@theaterdream One of those brothers are still alive. Jon is simply producing and directing, but he's still having an impact on today's music industry....
Criss reportedly used to practice his guitar for 8-10 hours everyday when he was a boy. That's why he became one of the greatest heavy metal guitarists of all time and accomplished so much in his all too short life.
most don't realize before they were Savatage they were called Avatar and I have the ep too which became half Sirens and the other half The Dungeons Are Calling and most think Sirens was their 1st album and it wasn't The Dungeons Are Calling was and i own everything from them and got to meet Jon Oliva from Jon Olivas Pain and he's a sweet quiet awesome man and Jon Olivas Pain was waaaay before TSO was even thought of
@@darkshad0wz69 Sirens came out a year before Dungeons are Calling. Anyways, Dungeons was an EP, not an official studio album.
Truly one of the best metal songs of the 80’s.
Greatest song of all time imo. I have always loved this song. It's absolutely perfect in every way. Song is excellent, band is excellent, cheesy but in a fun way. The singer should be a stage actor with that level of theatrics, perfect voice, cool riffs, amazing Guitarist RIP. What isn't there to like about this song?
mitch mclean Savatage rules!!!!
mitch mclean Cheese but very metal...remembers Sirens. 80's metal is great, the videos get a little bit dated and cheese, bit thats ok.
That song is the opposite of perfect. If you endorse this, you are a simpleton.
Relax my man hs wtf?@@ignoramustrueface
@@davidgardiner4620 you relax
Talk about an underrated , unappreciated band...this bans is a perfect example of that...they're fuking awesome
Criss was so ahead of his time. To bad it he as taken from us. RIP Brother.
+TheDeadWinterDead Totally! Criss along with Rhoads and Hendrix is one of the most saddest and frustrating guitarist deaths.
And now Paul. R.I.P. Paul. You are sadly missed!
Chris will be back.
The good die too young.
T HE BEST FRUIT GETS PICKED FIRST
One of the greatest metal songs ever, just fantastic musicians ,rip chris
Savatage kicks ass. 62 years old.. Still rocking.. Greetings from South Africa !!
2019? Hall of the mountain king standing the test of time 🤘🤘
Sounding as good as it ever did. \m/\m/
Was there ever a doubt?
The Gods made Heavy Metal & they saw that it was good.
no 2020
Eternal
This song got me into Metal. Was watching Headbangers Ball for the first time and caught this gem. ❤️🤘🏽
Saw these guys when they opened up for DIO back in the 80's. Criss dying in that accident was a tragedy. Definitely one of the great bands from Florida.
That was my first concert. Saw them in long Beach.
Rock on John
and his killer served like a year wtf
I saw that tour too! Nassau Colosseum with Megadeth and Dio!
LEGEND
It's Feb 1, 2024 and I just heard for the first time that I know of. It's good.
one of the greatest metal albums of all time !
Possibly the ALL TIME BEST metal song....I never get tired of this song...Funny how the Dwarf running around is supposed to be so cutting edge and intriguing....
@dquinn8344
Bro, it’s mysterious
RIP Criss Oliva. I remember buying the Sirens album with the original black/blue cover on Par records back when it first came out. No debut album has ever blown me away like that one, and that was 34 years ago, when most independent releases suffered from poor production values. Production on Sirens was raw, but there was no denying the talent of this band. Me and my friends KNEW Criss Oliva's name because he riffed with total style and just shredded in all the right ways without forgetting the song itself. Thank you for posting this video. A great reminder of a great band and an all-time great guitarist that much of the younger generation never got to hear. RIP Criss.
Mark Boyd lucky one , first version is rare , wish i had the blue vinyl press :-)
and his killer served like a year wtf
I bought the Sirens tape it was green then I got The Dungeons are calling on Caroline label .
Florida metal represent!! 🤙
One of the greatest albums of all time
This band is one of the best there ever was. I grew up listening to these guys, and still do. Everyone said I would grow out of it, ha!
You never get tired of grow out of good music
Who the hell told you that? Fuck those idiots
Probably the most underrated band of the era.
My first Savatage's song was about 25 years ago. I am still loving it.
Nah. I even bought a loud system so I can boom it louder than the other guy sitting at the stop light listening to hip hop. And I’m 51 so. Been listening to Savatage since Dungeons. Pantera probably has the best sound quality for kickers at a red light because of the legendary Terry dates produced Vinny kick. But Savatage is on heavy rotation with a few others on Apple Music
The playing style of Criss Oliva is so ahead of its time
This is the pure definition of heavy metal.
2:30 One of the best transitions ever... and the laugh of Jon is simply crazy...
We adopted our son we got him when he was 9 months and this baby had this laugh he wasn't taught it he just had it
Who's listening to this in 2023? This girl is!! Fucken awesome song
I definitely am!!
Me. Tee-hee!!!
2024 here.
I’m still in the hall of the MMOUNtain king. 2024. \m/
Let's rock baby!!
Best Savatage's album. You don't need to play fast or even thrash, death or black metal to be Heavy... You just need to be "You"...
working on a video of Laughs in Metal, also will be talking about that Savatage is going to be coming out with a New Album in 2024
I saw this tour while living in Germany. If I remember correctly, Candle Mass opened up for them. Good times!!!!
Candlemass..Still going strong today :D
I saw it in Allentown PA. USA.Testament opened up for them and Nuclear Accept.👍👍👍✌️
That would've been sooooo dope. Candlemass and Savtage are the shit.
I saw I think that they opened up for DIO and Megadeth yeah saw theme in Dayton Ohio at HARRA Arena 84 or 85 bad ass show
A MASTERPIECE - these bands today cannot come close to matching the old-school....
Your 100% right
It's an era gone forever dude
@Char Aznable Wrong. You're dead wrong.
@@jonburbridge2968 History repeats, and considering metal is by all respects the rebirth of classical that applies to music too.
@@azazelreeds Your statement is all opinion
The most underrated band ever and the nicest guys. I saw them with my buddy in Tucson Az in the early 90s. The came sat with us about an hour bull shitting about music before they got on stage.
Hall of the mountain king is my favorite song ever since I was 13 years old and I am 50 years old now. Rock on mountain king 🏛🔥🔥☄🌠
First time I ever heard this in the 80's was one magical night at Lake Mead while watching (from a safe distance) a tremendous lightning storm on the Arizona side, and slamming beers, I was watching the "light show" from the Nevada side of the lake. this song went with the lightning absolutely perfectly.
I remember listening to Savatage with my friends when we were around 12-13 years old! Was awesome.....and still is! 🤘
I love those old 80's rock videos.
Directed by the late great Mick Rock. The same dude who shot Bowie and directed all of his early videos. He’s the man also responsible for shooting the iconic image of Queen that would grace the sleeve of Queen II and later inspired the promo video of Bohemian Rhapsody.
3:28 The official Savatage car alarm!!
Discovering new old music in 2024. Love it. Awwww yeahhhh
Love this song and band! All incarnations of Savatage have had some truly amazing musicians!
freakin' love this song. the vocal is powerful yet super catchy.
It's 2023. How many legends are still here?
It’s 2023 and Savatage still sounds amazing.
Criss like a wizard with guitar on hands!
Noone in the entire world had ever heard anything even remotely like Savatage! God bless Jon Olivia! This dude created modern metal. WTF!!!? Dare to argue with me.
Brutal legend brought me here
Heavy metal was at its best during this period. Power style and fun . Never tire of music like this. Steve.
The ultimate song of Savatage. A song that I would like to blast out to the whole fucking world so that everyone's heads ring for days...
Those clips of 80/90's has a nice atmosphere that no one "super câmera fucking HD" can give to us!
2023 still sounds badass
instant 80s memories came roaring back. I frickin love this song..
Best video on Utube. Chris had it all. Riffs, phrasing, tone, riffs, style and more riffs.
He is sorely missed by those who know. RIP.
FLORIDA RULES!!
Why does Florida keep electing right wing fascist crackpots ?
Fun Fact: Jon Oliva is one of the principal producers of Trans Siberian Orchestra, famous for their Christmas concerts.
Well yeah, TSO is pretty much this band.
When I first heard them I was confused as hell. Why is this mainstream band playing Savatage tunes?
TS Who?
And then I figured it out. I love that they made a huge success but it still chaps me from time to time that Savatage doesn't get credit.
I have been to two TSO concerts in the past, and they always gave credit to, and promoted, Savatage when they played their songs.
PURE GENIUS
Been seeing tso every year since 2016
Jon and Criss Oliva were the Lennon/McCartney of metal. It's too bad that Criss was taken at such a young age and couldn't be apart of TSO tremendous success. R.I.P
I listened to this song for the first time in a small metal party, and it was the opening of the party
what a gem
Headbangers Ball!!!
Era um programa de tv, de antigamente.
jasper426 It was from when they played music videos on television. I think several years ago I got lucky enough to see this on TV by chance
I still have the vhs tape of the night this video debut. It's about worn out, but it was Savatage on the Ball !!!!
Yes!!!! Those were the days. Staying up late, getting ready to hit record and catch any cool videos they might play. They always played one or two every episode that were super heavy or thrashy. I still have some tapes somewhere!!!
Yall are tell your age lol good times right there.Loved Headbangers Ball looked forward to that coming on
Definitely a Metal classic. I love this song a lot!
Know what REALLY pisses me off? The guy who killed him had seven D.U.I.s and he only served 18 months. Should have done 20 years.
Shoulda been put behind bars for freakin' life!!! Some people just have to learn the hard way!!!!!
@Starchaser I don't think someone with 7 DUIs feels any regret.
Totally. He was an awesome guitar player
@@fairyland2288 Nope he was just like the rest of society and is really, really sorry ☹️
Sorry he got caught all those times.
It's turning into a modern day lottery lately and we're the chips. You are worth $66.00 bucks a day locked up. It's time people wake up and accept that external control doesn't work. Get the Dept of corrections off the stock exchange and then try teaching your dog not to lick his nuts. It's the same thing!
...shoulda got 20yrs of a$$ beatings
when i heard sirens...man i was hooked..those guitar riffs were freaking awesome...vocals ah man..nothing i had heard bfore....just incredible band....im 56 n still dis band kills it everytime.....cris... u still rock brother....Rip
Jon Oliva's voice ---> pure class! Love it! Great riff too by the way :)
It's a crime I only learned of Savatage a couple of years ago, such a unique sound I've been craving, love it.
One of Obituary's influences!!!! I love this song always.
The most valuable treasure in the box: Savatage CD
Used to go see them in the 80's at Mr. T's Club 19 in Tampa. Actually Club 19 was in Clearwater. You had to get there super early if you wanted to get in when they were there. They had a massive local following. To see them live was amazing to say the least. Man, Jon could sing...
Savatage used to play Mr. T's club? That just might be the coolest damn thing I ever heard!
Not owned by the famous Mr. T though
Loved Mr. T's Club 19. Leather everywhere. I believe there is a Sam's club there now.
Good memories.
screams like a freakin banshee, amazin
I dig it incredible vocal cords
Madness reigns.
When this came out and hit headbangers ball on MTV back in the day. Opening guitar work after the wind and thunder. Grabbed you and even late night, slapped you awake. Vocals in. Right mix of melodic with some crunch and grit to it. Like a fave right at the amusement park. It had you wanting to enjoy this ride again and again!
I love that little paid homage to "the legend" Ozzy and J Lee !
Saw them live in 1988 and they were amazing!
Savatage is so magical that dwarves bump into them
Such a great band. I still remember watching this video when it premiered on MTV back in the '80s. They always reminded me of the Dio era Black Sabbath albums.
Absolutely mate. Savatage is one of the best and most underrated bands of all time: ruclips.net/video/2eNBk7QrCeQ/видео.html
Vocally they remind me of loudness or EZO
As I've always said. " Jon is the greatest singer ever!!!!!"
Criss Oliva... 30 years without you... RIP
happy birthday and r.i,p criss oliva
One of the greatest Bands ever!!!
And thanks to Ear Music for those awesome Vinyl Re-Releases!!!

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Criss!❤ Great band! One of my favorites to this day! xx
Loved this album. This and Strange Wings frickin' rule!!

One of the best metal songs written, the singing and musicianship is epic
Forever grateful my dad raised me on stuff like this 🤘
One of the greatest metal tunes of all time I can't imagine how good Chris Oliva would have been nowadays! Legend's
I remember the first time I found this when it was fresh. Chris’s guitar fried my face off.
2020 Hall of Legends
Best video of the 80s period
Among the visually and artistically coolest 80s music videos.
This was the first Savatage song I ever heard, back in the late 80s. Walked into a friends apartment and it was playing. My reaction was "Who...is...this?!" The audio on this video is an absolute travesty tho.
Me too I was hooked right off the bat
Песня на все времена, классика. "Sirens" is great song too.
How can you NOT LOVE "SAVATAGE 🤘 THEY ARE TRULY A LEGENDARY FLORIDA METAL BAND! Great to hear him sing Painted skies with former Crimson Glory singer the late ( MIDNIGHT)R.I.P. JPM
The Voice - fantastic. All beastly
Far away in a land caught between time and space
Where the books of life lay
We fear this castle of stone
The mountain king roams all alone in here
But he's not the only one
Lost inside, forever hidden from the sun
Madness reigns
In the Hall of the Mountain King, oh yeah
His deep dark eyes keep watch on his kingdom
And the mysteries that sleeps safe inside
His hall, his towers of stone
Shall not be overthrown for eternity
It is guarded by the king
Insanity and the power that it brings
Madness reigns
In the Hall of the Mountain King, oh yeah
In the Hall of the Mountain King, oh yeah...
Come with me, stay close by my side
As the darkness of night closes in
Don't fear in the thunder it roars
When the Mountain King calls all his children home
To where I hid him we must run
Refuge here, for those forever on the run
Madness reigns, my friends...
In the Hall of the Mountain King, oh yeah
In the Hall of the Mountain King, oh yeah...
I was looking for you.
Эта вещь, как и сам альбом в целом, просто великолепны, браво-Savatage👍👍👍
“The emotion of Clapton, the feel of Joe Perry, and the dexterity of Eddie Van Halen”: Criss Oliva was one of heavy music’s most electrifying guitar players - and then a drunk driver took his life
Best Metal band ever, I miss the 1980.s.
