Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music - which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock- earned the band a passionate cult following.
Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” - their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill - and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.
The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans - showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

Still listening to this masterpiece in 2021! Who's with me?
Yeah 🤘
Hell yeah! And the Reddit community is reactivated www.reddit.com/r/Savatage
to all savatage. but especially Streets..a rock opera. That is really one of my first rock albums. Great memories.
Hellyeah
Yes and I always have tears because music these days could never be as good!!! 😭 ❤️
It's 2023 now , it's still awesome ! I love Savatage ❤
❤😮😊
❤
This live is metal symphonic that blows you away.
same here
I was jamming to this back in '89 and 1000 years later, still jamming
they are GENIUSES
@@RobLedAmen.
Ahh I used to play this cassette over and over. A Black kid in Brooklyn blasting this outta my JVC boom box made me a very unpopular kid.
Andre Morris but nothing beat the feeling that this music gave you right
Oh I got to the harder stuff later on when I discovered Slayer's first album
FUCK YEAH!! ANDRE!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Hell Fucking Yeah. I even went to the Big four at Yankee Stadium. Metallica might have headlined but Slayer SLAYED it. It was a good idea to put Slayer before Metallica and not Megadeth (sorry Dave but your inconsistencies, feuds and bad albums turned me away) but "Peace sells" will always be on my desert island disk list.
Despite their popularity never surpassed Savatage, just an upper level they will never reach still actually, Slayer or Metallica none even dream to equal something such relevant as Savatage works, long live Oliva bros legacy! \m/
Who still listen and enjoy it in 2024!?A master piece from my birth year 1989❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
WOW! I came accross this song after listeing to som classic Fates Warning and this popped up in the feed. I remember Savatage and liked 2 or 3 songs but never got into them. This song was killer!
Right here. ✋️
Savatage are the true pioneers of bringing progressive & symphonic elements to metal. The Oliva brothers are severely underrated. R.I.P Criss :(
Dont forget Steve, he was there too ;)
Definitely one of the pioneering bands of symphonic prog/power metal who didn't get quite the credit they deserved but such is life for a lot of innovators.
Queensryche
Agree
Try Randy Rhoads.
Loved by many, done well by few, and created by one.
That being said, IMHO, this song was what Randy hoped to achieve.
A great song from one of the greatest, most underappreciated bands of all time. Truly ahead of their time. R.I.P. Criss.
Listened to this song thousands of times and it still gives me chills. RIP Criss
🥹
this band deserved a lot of more
This album is an absolute masterpiece. I got into Savatage with the release of their 1987 classic Hall of the Mountain King. Been a fan ever since. Chris Oliva was one of the great, unsung guitar heroes. His work is staggeringly brilliant.
Over 30 years later and this song and band are still better than most of what we have now
Quality > quantity
At this point I'd say it's better than everything out now
Jon Lewis.. couldn't agree more.
@@irocitZtrue but the newest Metallica's and iron maidens albums have some songs that aren't bad either(hell on earth and inamorata are 2 best ones imo from newer ones), tho those 2 still aren't as good as savatage or dio
@@wlodek7422 I'm wondering what the new Priest is gonna sound like, I'm interested in the new Maiden as well. Metallica I gave up on but I'll check it out if you say it's good, ha. I was just talking about music with someone recently, the difference between Metal from the heyday and the newer bands today is, the newer bands have a good song here and there. Bands from the heyday like Dio or Judas Priest you could listen to the entire album all the way through because it was good..
2024, still one of the greatest songs ever.
WOW! I came accross this song after listeing to som classic Fates Warning and this popped up in the feed. I remember Savatage and liked 2 or 3 songs but never got into them. This song was killer!
Great band!
Over 30 yrs SAVATAGE!!!
RIP Paul O'Neill.
You are gone...but not forgotten.
Savatage is one of the best bands in heavy metal history. wish could see them live...
br
THIRD IN MY LIST OF "MISSED IT" BEHIND ONLY CREAM, CUZ CLAPTON WAS "GOD" AND HE WASN'T FUCKIN' AROUND WITH OTHER GENRES THEN (and don't get me started about Bruce and Ginger).....AND THE ONLY OTHER ONE AHEAD OF SAVATAGE WOULD BE ORIGINAL SABBATH LINEUP.....I SEE THEM 3 TIMES, NEVER WITH OZZY, BUT AT LEAST, IN SPITE OF THE FACT I THOUGHT I WANTED TO BE IN FRONT OF TONY, WE WERE 2ND ROW IN FRONT OF GEEZER FUCKING BUTLER....AND AFTER THAT I WAS SAYING "GEDDY WHO"????
Rômulo Pedrosa same too but it wouldn’t be the same without Criss Oliva
I hear you baby
Not entirely the same guys, and definitely not the same repertoire. You also will never be able to see Criss on guitar, and Jon on vocals, unless you manage to see Jon Oliva's Pain band live somewhere.
Such a classic. I'm glad they've announced one more album and tour for 2024.
FUCKING LOVE SAVATAGE, i am 57 years young, and been a metalhead since i scratched my way out the womb, always will love the oliva bros. metal, BOW TO THE METAL GODS, LOVE YOU,
Metal 80ts love from Greece 🇬🇷 ❤ ♥
Songs never ti be forgotten. And still the orchestra plays
WOW! I came accross this song after listeing to som classic Fates Warning and this popped up in the feed. I remember Savatage and liked 2 or 3 songs but never got into them. This song was killer!
Throughout my career I've had the honor of working with some of the best in the industry. Criss Oliva was one of them. He was taken from us way too soon. I worked on 2 records with him. This one and "Hall Of The Mountain King". What an amazing guitarist and one cool dude!
That's the coolest thing ever!!! I've been a savatage fan over 20 years... a little.late to the party but the Hall.of the mountain king is by far my Favorite album and 2nd is Handfull of Rain.. then the Wake of Magellan
Is it true that Jon Oliva played drums on this cut in the studio ?
I just discovered them a year ago.. The energy is massive man!
Man, that’s great. Did Dr.Killdrums play drums on the album?
@@r.g.armstrong2688 Paul O'Neill (Producer) used to call him "Wacholz" ! As I recall, Steve played drums on all the cuts. This was several lifetimes ago...
My most favourite song from all time, 35 years ago this piano guitar blown my mind, how can you play piano with heavy guitars, awesome then, awesome now.. Jon voice, Criss guitars just pure perfection..
2024 baby!!!
The only band i say truly amazes me every time i lisson to them.....😮❤
You know that the music is good when you want to hear it again after 20 years!
Most underrated Band ever 😭
most underrated Metal Band of all time. They should have had the same fame as Queen :( So sad that Chris died that early ...: RIP
I'm gonna say Sava and Fates Warning are the 2 most underrated metal bands of all-time.
Add Crimson Glory to finish the HOLY TRIANGLE OF WHITE COLLAR POWER/PROGRESSIVE METAL.
savatage is better than queen.
@@drzitbag06 don't drink that much
I'm not sure If Savatage and Fates Warning are really underrated. Surely, they haven't got the attention in mainstream, but I don't think that this has really been their intention. Both bands have a lot of fans all around the world and, man, that' s it!
One of the greatest Metal songs of All-Time. RIP - Criss Oliva
If there's any band in the late 80s/early 90s that deserved a lot of mainstream attention, Savatage was that band. It's a shame about what happened to Criss, a great talent taken away too soon.
Fucking drunk drivers. Damn cunts..... SO SAD.... :(
@@fernandopenalva2680 So many talents taken too soon!!! I'm thinking that's for a reason- they're needed in heaven, maybe
This is an historical Masterpiece
2024, Savatage rules
Still listening to this masterpiece 2024
I was 21 years old in those days. Now I´m getting older !!! This song makes me feel like 21 again. Masterpiece of a great band in a great time ...
STILL THE ORCHESTRA PLAYS.
2019
SAVATAGE STILL THE BEST BAND EVER.
Still in 2021
second best after Queen, Freddie. Not the actual queen with that guy
I'm still listening in 2024. I'm eith you now. It' fuckin great.

Cannot like this track enough. A masterpiece.
Savatage is one of the greatest bands of all times and Gutter Ballet one of the finnest pieces of heavy metal
Nai, skotoni afto to kommati!
Timeless classic
I love this song... Greetings from Poland!

30 years since Christopher Michael Oliva leave this world. Gone but NEVER forgotten.
Still and forever a classic!

@@Professional-fh1ow great band! Great catalog of songs!
I wonder if he doesn't overeat to comfort himself with all the hell he's been through. RIP Criss! I'd love to hug Jon! And thank him for all the music of Savatage and TSO over the years. The crowds will never be gone!
No one today does what Criss did in his time. His tone is unparalleled, even today. Amazing band.
Great song from an absolutely amazing band that never got their due. One of the best ever.
It was a day like this...22 years ago.Rest in peace Criss.
SAVATAGE REUNION THIS YEAR!!!!
2024 and this masterpiece still rocks 🤘🔥🔥🔥
This song represents perfectly the atmosphere of the 80's. Great great music.
RIP Criss Oliva, one of the greatest guitarists to walk among us. Wish he was around today, I cannot even begin to phantom what he would have been capable of...
Oh man. Headbangers Ball... this video. Me in the store the very next day. And hooked ever since.
Another sleepless night
A concrete paradise
Sirens screaming in the heat
Neon cuts the eye
As the jester sighs
At the world beneath his feet
It's a gutter ballet
Just a menagerie
Still the orchestra plays
On a dark and lonely night
To a distant fading light
Balanced on their knives
Little parts of lives
Such a strange reality
Kill the unicorn
Just to have its horn
Soon he's just a fantasy
It's a gutter ballet
Just a menagerie
Still the orchestra plays
On a dark and lonely night
To a distant fading light
The jester takes his bows
Slips into the crowd
As the actors fade away
Another death to mourn
Another child is born
Another chapter in the play
It's a gutter ballet
Just a menagerie
Still the orchestra plays
On a dark and lonely night
To a distant fading light
Sempre acompanho por aqui rsrs

I've never had the pleasure to see Savatage perform live, but I did see the next best thing, Jon Oliva's Pain, which is one of my most treasured memories. What a performer. Saw him on a local metal festival, back in the early 2000s, tucked between two very different bands. The crowd seemed to consist mainly of fans of those two bands, but it was Jon Oliva who was by far the most memorable. Honestly, this large, heavy man went to stage. Barely anyone seemed to know who he was. He took place behind a large piano. The crowd was mostly quiet, probably wondering what kind of show this was going to be. Suffice it to say, when his program finished, people wanted more. The next band had to start half an hour later. He had won over everyone there. Only a genuinely great artis can pull something like that off. I've seen very few artists interact with the crowd like he did. I had only ever heard a handful of Savatage songs myself at the time and it was only after that show that I looked into them more. Jon, on the tiny off chance you ever get to read this, thank you. From the bottom of my heart. You're one of the all time greats and you've changed more lives than you'll ever realize.
If you haven't already, check out Trans Siberian Orchestra. I was listening to them well before Savatage. I know they aren't quite the same thing. However, I will say, I was listening to Spotify one evening and it kept rolling after the playlist in the radio style "based on ____" format. The very first song I heard of Savatage's, I would've bet money it was TSO. Which makes sense considering TSO is basically a spinoff...Their musical style is very similar. I imagine you've probably listened to them...but for anyone else reading, TSO's music isn't just for Christmas time (they also have non-Christmas music). It transcends seasonal listening. It's enjoyable any time of year. It's THAT GOOD in my humble opinion. Also one hell of a live show.
Don't forget about Trans Siberian Orchestra!!
Here again in 2024
Me too. What a guitar solo. Greetings from Germany. RIP CHRIS

this band always tells a story , its like youre suppose to see them at a symphony concert lol so cool
Savatage is the light inside the dark
What a great song. A masterpiece of melody and power. Timeless!

Thin Lizzy great taste.
Savatage, one of the best rock Bands that came out of the 80's.
это нечто! просто отрыв ! взрыв мозга! песне столько лет- и она просто рвёт тебя на части...
One of the best hard rock songs ever written. RIP Criss Oliva.
I taped this off Alan "Fluff" Freeman's Virgin FM rock show in I guess 1996 and was blown away by it. Never heard of Savatage before (in fact I thought he called them "Sabotage" and with no internet, that's what I thought they were called for quite a while) but I have loved it ever since. One of the great 1980s metal tracks.
He reveals his trve vocal power at the very end.
One of the greatest Heavy Metal tracks of all time.
this particular track. This track is so awesome......This track IS SO Awesome!

I weep every time I hear a Criss Oliva solo
When the crowds are gone,,, turns me to tears Sava was my life man ,,, and kris Olivia was king

Savatage are one of the 5 best Heavy Metal bands of all time. Having into account that you can't spell Heavy Metal without Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, this gives the Olivas band a lot of merit.
@MetalSlayer69 No, in which band does/did he play? :)
@MetalSlayer69 slayer is more of a meme than an actually good band. plus they are thrash
@@antlereddruid8359 You take that right back! Also never even heard they are meme.
@@9yearoldepicgamersoldier129 I won't. they are in fact thrash metal and not prog/power so incomparable to savatage. Also, "FUCKING SLAAAAAAYEEEEER!!!" IS in fact a giant meme. educate yourself pls. thx
Excellent choices Pablo! Since you said 5 and only named 4, I'm gonna add ...AC/DC!
This album and Hall of the Mountain King were unreal albums.
I also like Sirens.
Perfect balance between guitar and piano, in addition to being musically superb. Best example of this I can think of.
Great Song Forever....Oliva the best Singer 🖤 LOVE THIS BAND❤
on a dark and lonely night to a distant fading light.......fucking epic!!!!!
Huge influence on me im a bass player but my mom played piano so i can play this on piano. Songs like this made me want to play other instruments especially the piano. Lucky to have other musicians in the family. Thanks mom and dad
I wore this out on cassette back in the late 80's .Amazingly TALENTED group of musicians. Just beautiful! This song gives me chills every single time I hear it. It's just THAT GOOD!
This is the song that got me hooked on Savatage. they quickly became one of my favorite bands.
love 80s music videos... those colors, this music, the magic of theater performance...
It’s 2022 and I still JAM TO THIS ! This Song is A MASTERPIECE!!
There's just something about this song that grabs me. Some essence of greatness about Savatage that never really caught on with the masses.
Perfect music at the same level like Queensryche and Fates Warning. I love them since I was 20 years old ❤️
One of the best metal albums ever!! definitely a top 10 metal classic!
Still listening to this masterpiece in 2023! Who's with me?
Savatage 4ever ❤️ Criss Oliva Era
and its 2024 now; it's still awesome.. thank you for all your songs Savatage..
Discovered them back in 92, one of the most peculiar bands in metal history, they unfortunately did not get what they deserved, but no matter what, they wrote many good songs. Poetry and great music. Goosebumps guaranteed.
Savatage is simply incredible, one of the best bands of all time!

You are correct! These guys were Queensryche and Dream Theatre before they were themselves. Massively underrated, never outdated...
