Over 20 years, 11 albums and hundreds of performances around the globe, Savatage’s dynamic music - which mixes elements of thrash, progressive, power metal and classic hard rock- earned the band a passionate cult following.
Founded in Tampa, Florida by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva, Savatage saw their many musical triumphs overshadowed by personal tragedy. Albums such as 1987’s “Hall of the Mountain King” - their first of eight collaborations with producer and mentor Paul O’Neill - and 1991’s riveting “Streets: A Rock Opera” continue to be celebrated to this day. The death of Criss Oliva on the heels of the breakthrough success of 1993’s “Edge of Thorns” altered the group’s trajectory considerably.
The band experienced a renaissance with their 1995 album “Dead Winter Dead,.” and continued to display a flair for theatricality of their own on their final two albums. An epic reunion performance at 2015’s Wacken Festival before 80,000 fans - showed proof that the crowds will never be gone.

Update: It's 2023 and Savatage is still fantastic. It's now 2024 and they are still great! Lol
This band needs more fame and attention in 2023 and the upcoming centuries!!

Jon and the members of Savatage are truly are the best group of my time. I love them ❤
Can confirm
...and get ready for their new album, its almost completed🙂
Savatage is the perfect example that quality is not reflected by the quantity of listeners

Velkommen til Savatage
Yesssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!
So true...
Savatage, the band that proves that having truckloads of talent isn't the gateway to worldwide success.
wooooord
Chris OGuinn
They are one of the more successfull metal bands
FccRuinedAmerica andtheentireworld well as TSO they are. Savatage is no longer successful. What members are actually in TSO. Dr.Killdrums, also known as Steve Doc Wacholz is now in a powermetal band called Reverence.
And I think Criss´s pasing took its toll on the band and on Jon
Savatage never even went Gold.
THE MOST UNDERRATED BAND IN THE HISTORY OF METAL
Fact.
100% top 5 underrated for sure! Their writing, lyrics, vocals, instrumentals, the whole package!
I’m a simple guy. If you’re playing this band I’m listening. First time I heard them I was blown away by Jon’s voice , the guitar and the music. This is a rock masterpiece. Rest in peace Chris . God bless.
the band needs to get attention... NOW!!
Imagine the level Criss would have reached if he hasn’t passed. He was such an amazing player
Bless his bro criss terrible accident
They r beyond the realms of Death ☠️
I love depressing power ballads. This song is, in my opinion, the ultimate sad power ballad. RIP Criss Oliva.
What a song. The line "I wasted my time until time wasted me" is a piece of poetic genius.
Agreed! one of many...
Raw lyrics very painful but strikes a chord with those who can relate
Or "in the dark, it's easier to see."
I love that lyric.
The whole verse was ....
"Never wanted to know, never wanted to see. I've wasted my time till time wasted me." When I first heard those words along with the ending verse it was like a punch in the gut. Now I am 48, atill listening to Savatages many truly beautiful musical orchestrations, but this song in particular touches my soul. Many times it has made this 6'1' 265lb, commercial boat engineer/ captain misty eyed.
this is not a song, this is just a MASTERPIECE
Years ago when TSO was small enough they would do a personal meet-and-greet in the parking lot after shows, I casually mentioned to Paul O'Neill that I heard of TSO via Savatage. He asked me if I actually had any of the Savatage music. When I told him I had the Edge of Thorns CD in my car he sent a security guard with me to get the CD. He and everyone present signed the CD jacket and gave my wife a couple guitar picks from the show. The posters they signed still hang in our guest room.
TSO actually still does meetups, after every evening show, within the halls of the concert venue not in the parking lot. Also, RIP Paul O'Neill
That's an amazingly cool story.
that must've been unique
but why the bodyguard? lol
I met Paul after a TSO show at the end of their tour one year. I mentioned that I was a fan since Hall of the Mountain King. He said "Screw the handshake, give me a hug" and proceeded to give everyone with me a bunch of free stuff including a TSO jean jacket for my daughter that they were selling on the website for $150. We must have left with over $300 worth of stuff. RIP Paul. You were truly an angelic soul.
The band that had it all. Drums, base, vocals, tone, etc. The best band that most people have never ever even heard of!
I have found them right this day
I just know them today from FB comments. This sounds promising. What song or album would you recommend checking.
I say the same about XYZ......
Unfortunately
@@nobnobnobnobi recommend the whole gutter ballet album and the whole hall of the mountain king album, masterpieces
I don't care if I'm listening to this in 2019. I did in 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1990, 1989, 1988, 1987 and I will listen to this every year til I die. Savage should've been much bigger that they were. Awesome band!
Legend.
I saw Savatage on this tour. Hearing this song makes me tear up a bit.
Savatage should be remembered among the giants of metal. They might not have achieved mainstream success in their time due to their not fitting into a easy, marketable pigeonhole, but their effect on listeners with ears to hear the genius behind their music, many of which would go on to be musicians themselves, is incalculable.
🤟
"...cause in the dark, it´s easer to see."
Damn , what a great painful song :(
Jon oliva is one of the greatest musicians ever
Jeremy Lundy completely agree!
I think his Brother Chriss was more so than Jon.. Even Jon has stated that his little brother Chriss taught him everything he knows about music
@@ryant3600 where is the Music now ??? Where is true Rock ???
And still composes as Transsiberian ✌
Let us not forget the other member of the band. Paul O'Neil(RIP), and his influence on this band.
Criminally UNDERRATED.
Oh here's the "underrated" guy
@@teamEP789 In THIS case, He's RIGHT!
This song is a masterpiece. Some of the best lyrics ever written.
Up there with Dylan's 'Like a rolling stone'. So poetic and of its time. ty
one of the most underrated songs of metal
this is not metal and is not underrated as it is one of the most brutal hard rock classics.
David Trunks
WTF? This isn't Hard Rock, it's fucking progressive/symphonic metal.
indeed, this is metal not hard rock. david trunks you´re wrong
Mok tar It's hard rock. Jon Himself said that.
ok jon said that ,but some songs of savatage have heavy stuff, and i don´t compare them with hard rock stuff like bom jovi ,motley crue or ratt. music of savatage is more deeper and well played
Nothing like discovering such a masterpiece, that is as old as you, that you somehow had never listened to before.
3:30 - Look at that picking technique. Absolute perfection, minimum motion.. What an incredible play Criss was.
The day will come when this is finally recognized as one of the top 100 rock songs of all time.
when man...I think no...did you see the list for 1 billion views? gangman and justin bieber. Only Queen is real music, never heard of most of them....and I am so happy that I did not listen to them, never clicked gangman and some other craps, but youtube was trying to suggest a lot of them
It's my all-time favorite
That world would be too awesome to exist.
Share like there's no tomorrow!
Top 100? I'm with you, but this is way closer to top 20 all time. Jon Oliva is one of the least appreciated musicians in modern history. It's a real shame too, and even worse that his brother isn't here anymore. Thank the Lord they made as much music with Criss as they did, we are blessed to have it.
At a certain time, Savatage had become some sort of a heavy metal version of Queen, which was obvious in their influences when you listen carefully to this music. The band decided to shift away from the conventional shematic metal tune, to expand toward more diverse musical spheres. I appreciate ! Over the years, I have been realizing how great musicians they were.
Well said...
TURN EM ON AGAIN
TURN EM ON AGAIN
TURN EM ON AGAIN
TURN EM ON AGAIN
Amazing how many people who say they listen to metal and rock have never heard of Savatage. Most underrated band ever. One of the best metal bands by far.
One of these few songs which give enormous power to you but make you cry hard at the same time.
A masterpiece.
So True, sad that so few now about this band. The strange thing is ....when you play it for someone, they always love it.
51 years old. Me. THIS? This needs to be distributed throughout the world again....we NEED this again.....God please, let the world know of these guys....
Lord,have mercy. What a voice.
Never have I been moved by music more than what Criss and Jon did on both Gutter Ballet and Streets: A Rock Opera. The mixture of guitar/vocals/piano is masterfully done and sadly will never be again.
With Criss being gone the songs carry an ever bigger emotional weight. R.I.P. Criss...and Savatage with him.
Thanks for posting this, it's really good video quality too, usually it's terrible.
So many bands owe their entire career to this band that paved the way.
they paved the way for so much of this symphonic metal and most people dont know they were tso before tso was ever born
@@johnzuk6811 I had a friend who HATED metal but rang me up saying he saw TSO, did I ever hear of them,. I started laughing. He asked what's funny. I said dude...TSO is Savatage, check 'em out...I've been a fan for years.
This song going easily top ten list hard-rock ballads. This band means for me a lot, since first album. These days don't make good rock like Savatage was.Sad but true.
This is a masterpiece. Nothing else needs saying.
One of the greatest songs ever written.
I am seriously considering finding a way to get Savatage in the rock and roll hall of fame. I live 30 minutes from Cleveland and these guys deserve it more than many of the bands that are in. It's a shame and disgrace that most people don't know about Savatage but know about TSO, even though TSO is awesome.....Savatage is the origin and THIS deserves recognition.
Savatage are much too great for that bunch of sanctimonious turkeys to even comprehend. Your intentions are worthy and noble and I am in complete agreement that they should be recognised much more than they are. But trying to get a bunch of ignorant fools to appreciate the finest music ever is like beating a dead horse.
Would be a good try. But ... there is a long line of Progressive rock bands needing that and RRHF is unreachable like a Kafkaesque castle
They are too good for that 💜
Sorry mate but the hall of fame means nothing to fans that love them for who they are. This is just one band among many the should not have to be in the hall of farce. They get more in our hearts and ears.
ABSOLUTELY !
Damn that voice... So powerful, so emotional...
What a MASTERPIECE!!
R.I.P. Criss
This is from 1989... its hard to realise this is 27years ago! I own this album since 1996 and it makes so happy to read in comments people say " i just discovered this ! " This means that nothing good ever gets lost
MItsos Ogdontatessera I'm only 15 and I've been listening to Savatage since I was 4, all time favorite band, with Dream Theater in close second
i was born the year you own the album, and i really enjoy this masterpiece, music is timeless
keep rocking
MItsos Ogdontatessera και ελληνας ; παντου ρε ειμαστε 😂
Wow
got my first car when i was 19. a 1978 Camaro. i wore out my Gutter Ballet cassette...love them!!!!
songs like this one make metal eternal
The most under-rated band through the years... SaVaTaGe
they should be in the hall of fame.
best song ever love it
In the hall of the mountain king😊
Imti Jamir LOL XD
Hall of Fame means fuck all if Madonna and other garbage are in ahead of them
Agree
The most heart breaking rock ballad ever written. Period.
it is great, but listen to "If I go away" off their next CD "Streets". I think you'll agree...
+kdragon7
When judging an album as one complete work of art, "streets" is the most cohesive they made throughout their career (and one of the best 90's metal albums in my opinion). "If I go away" is absolutely great, no doubt about it. Personally I like WTCAG a bit more.
In fact, the songs WTCAG and "Gutter Ballet" were both originally planned as part of "Streets".
What about All that I bleed? That song is like Criss Oliva's TESTAMENT to metal and music overall. :(
I agree with you, friend
Waldo this is my favorite song of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL
TIME.
One million likes! That was GREAT !!!
Do this song and video deserve 1 billion 447 million views less than November Rain?
No disrespect intended, of course.
unfortunately, these are views, and not likes. Only stupid videos have billions of views and likes.
@@dar1o
But you wouldn't feel special anymore if it had that many likes. Cuz posing as the underdog fan is sooo kewl. ;-)

just don't let my talk of how the gentiles do nothing an they do everything make u think i don't like the music
They simply do NOT make rock music like this anymore. These were the days of yesteryear. When music made sense.
I saw Savatage on the Gutter Ballet tour, twice. I have been to probably a thousand concerts, these were in the top 5. RIP Criss
dedicated to all the visible and invisible heroes who passed through our lives, footballers, actors, singers, journalists, politicians, etc....
CRISS AND PAUL R.I.P. WE LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU BOTH SO MUCH 😈💔💋
I don't know where the years have gone
Memories can only last so long
Like faded photographs, forgotten songs
And the things I never knew
When the skin is thin, the heart shows through
Please believe me what I tell you is true
Where's the light, turn then on again
One more night to believe and then
Another note for my requiem
A memory to carry on
The story's over when the crowds are gone
All my friends have been crucified
They made life a long suicide true
Guess we never figured out the rules
But I'm still alive and my fingers feel
I'm gonna play on till the final reel's through
And read the credits from a different view
Where's the lights, turn them on again
One more night to believe and then
Another note for my requiem
A memory to carry on
The story's over when the crowds are gone
When the crowds are gone
And I'm all alone
Playing the saddest song
Now that the lights are gone
Turn them on again
One more time for me my friend
Turn them on again
I never wanted to know
Never wanted to see
I wasted my time till time wasted me
Never wanted to go
Always wanted to stay
Cause the persons I am are the parts that I play
So I plot and I plan
Hope and I scheme
To the lure of a night
Filled with unfinished dreams
And I'm holding on tight
To a world gone astray
As they charge me for years
I can no longer pay
And the lights
Turn them off my friend
And the ghosts
Well just let them in
Cause in the dark
It's easier to see
Some of the best lyrics ever.. Love the line I wasted my time, till time wasted me.. man that whole part is just pure poetry
@@ryant3600 they used it again in believe one of the best songs of all time
❤️
Cause in the dark it is easier to see. OMG what a line.
This is poetry
This is one of the greatest fucking songs of all time
Most talented band of that "era"
Miss you Criss
After more than 20 years, this song still makes the hair on my neck stand up and gives me a shiver down to the depths of my soul.
RIP Paul O'Neill. No one blended metal and Broadway like Savatage, and Paul was the mastermind. I'm not ashamed to call all the albums he did with the band my favorites.
this gives me chills. such a magnificent song. rest in peace, Chris.
"I wasted my time until time wasted me." Absolutely brilliant line and words to live by.
One of the best bands of the 80's metal era and sadly, most people don't know about them.
Incredibly emotional song from an incredible band. This song is packed with more energy than a caffeine mixed with cocaine!
TSO is good on Christmas, but Savatage rocks the entire year!
this is one of the most beautiful and powerful songs I know.
i don't usually shed tears when listening to metal, but dammit does this band pierce the soul.
Savatage was so ahead of the times when they were doing early symphonic metal. A lot of this would have been so much more popular if it came out a decade after it did.
Such an underrated band! Very sad and haunting lyrics... Kinda applies to anyone old and worn out looking back on what was and what could have been but also excepting the end is near and the race has been ran... They had the total package, song writing, vocals, instrumentals, all of it!
literally everything this band made was pure gold
29 years ago to the day we lost the great one, 10-17-93
"I wasted my time, 'till time wasted me" I love playing this song for people who have never heard it. Underrated classic.
Great SONG
Great video
Great album
Great guitar work
SAVATAGE 4 LIFE

I wasted my time, till time wasted me. Genius!
Criss phrasing is incredible. The whole band is incredible. But, as a guitarist myself, I can’t help but to be captivated by the guitar work in this.
This song gives me chills every time I hear it
Timeless!!
R.I.P Criss Oliva
One of the best songs EVER
Soundtrack of my youth.... A lot of memories man, a lot of memories
playing this at my funeral...awesome song!!!
Man, this song gives me goosebumps, send chills down my spine, reap my soul
2024 and "the show must go on". Merece mais reconhecimento.
John Oliva!!!!
This is music at it's best!!!
I first heard this when I was 13 in 2006.
It is now the end of 2022, I'm about to turn 29
I still listen to this fairly regularly.
Yet it always hits just as hard as the first time I heard it.
Turn it on again, I say.
“When the skin is thin, the heart shows through.” Nice.
Last song I want to play before I die.
Or O to G
21 years. Rest in peace Criss. Rest in peace.
Underrated band and one of their best tracks
The way this song started and how it ended, this is so cool man
I cant stop listen this fucking masterpiece.
I really miss music like this. The song, almost prophetic, just pierces the heart. At the end, the repetition of 'Turn 'em on again" over and over, is exactly how I feel in my reflections of this song, this band, and that era.
Chris would be at the forefront of all things guitar if he was still with us! RIP brother, you are missed!
I was fortunate enough to meet all these guys on the Streets tour. I got to shake Criss's hand and tell him how much he reminded me of Randy Rhoades. At that point he just smiled and said, "one of my favorites too..."
Less than two years later he was gone. It was like losing Randy all over again
I'm so proud of what Jon and the late Paul O'Neill put together in TSO. It's truly a tribute to Criss, as you will always find his white Charvel wrapped in roses on every one of their albums. RIP Criss, an unbelievable guitarist. And RIP Paul, for your vision that brought these two bands to amazing heights
Criss Olivia passed on this day 30 years ago. Thank you for the great music and may he rest in peace
One of the best power ballads of all time.
I miss these guys so much.Seen them
Open for dio and megadeth.Excellent band all around
One of the best ballads of all time. Listen to it a 1000 times and you still have to repeat it over and over again.
Touching piece of art
I bought this record when it was released in 89. Listening to it now, it's still great - unlike other metal bands from that time who shall go unmentioned...
Why have I found savatage this late ? What's wrong with this world ? Why such a great band is so damn underrated and underappreciated ?
That guitar solo and vocals after, it is a masterpiece.
One of the best band in the universe.
Such an absolutely amazing song. Sends chills down my spine
Whenever I heard this, I always thought it would be the perfect song for an encore. You know, the lights are off, everybody is filing out of the club, then Jon sits down in the darkness and starts playing the piano. People start falling over themselves to get back into the club to see the rest of the song as they belt it out and the pyro fires when he rocks into the chorus "Where's the lights? Turn em on again!"
That would indeed be a masterful performance.. quite a showmanship there. Kudos to you sir for conuring it up.
After Criss' death, I wanted my band to cover this song but we had no keys in the lineup. I thought the same thing... encore number. And for those in the crowd that new of the band, their jaws would drop! Those that didn't would fall in love with the song and learn about the band afterward. I loved these guys so much!
One of the best metal/Rock acts ever with the unbelievable Oliva Bros
one of the most underrated song of music history. like a lost diamond , monumental masterpiece
3:35 and on is so heartfelt, he just belts it out. 30 years later and metal stands the test if time. In 30 more years, you will never know this was made in the 80's. Long live metal!!!
For me, the best Savatage song ever. This voice in the final part... We are reaching the stars.
I agree mate... but I love also Gutter Ballett, Believe and New York city don't mean nothing as much, and all the Streets album🤘
Lyric writing perfection, what an absolutely beautiful and heart breaking song. Timeless, best metal band to have ever existed
