In my house as a kid it was more like "you're gonna learn to play flute!" "but mom, I wanna learn cello!" "Shut up and go to band class!" *fifteen years later, my flute sounds like a goose, and I want to trade it in for a damn cello.*
First time I heard (learnt it through Grieg, actually) I wondered if the crowd was clapping so right or the musicians following along. I bet in the end there was a bit of both. Show how great musicians and performers they are to get such an alchemy with the crowd
My 1.5 year old daughter absolutely LOVES this song. When I put it on the TV she just stops what she's doing and starts trying to headbang with the dudes in the video.
Apocalyptica has the best lullabies for my wee girl. She's faling asleep while listen CULT. She's been listen Apocalyptica since she was in my belly. Now she is 3 year old and she keep asking when the new album will be relised coz she ''really loves Capocalica'' (she nows about new album as I gave her to listen Cold blood and Till death us part ;) )
I remember my middle school orchestra and band director showed this to me almost 10 years ago. I still come back to listen to it every once in a while. Thanks, Mr. Thomason.
Music is music. It’s the passion, emotion and work you put into your instrument ( voice included) that gives it your intended feeling. You can do amazing things no matter what your style is.
Pagan music was more like the metal of those times . They used instruments like the ‘hurdy gurdy’ which produced sustained 5ths adagios which sounds similar as the power chord , also people used that music to get drugged and crazy at parties
Trews Detroit I think, Grieg would've hate it at first, but then he'd probably say "well, tell them play it again, goddamn it". And after second listening he's fall in love and start to think this is what HE actually meant when he wrote it hahahaha :)
Back in the 70s and 80s metal was relatively new, you could not learn it in music school, so you got trained in classic music, this is why it had a great influence on metal.
Can we talk about Antero just sitting there casually playing in his fancy suit and shades while everyone else is running around shirtless and sweaty, headbanging and shit?
It's been about 9 years since I first heard this song and watched this video. This group inspired me to play the cello, and I've been playing it for 8 years now and am so thankful I found this. I've watched this video so many times...
It's a goddamn shame Edvard Grieg didn't have an electric guitar and an amp. But then long-hairs like me would have gone berserk and wrecked every auditorium he played in. Transports of mayhem multiplied by complete and total bedlam.
I'm speechless. They play those cellos like the instruments were part of them. It's like they're trying to surpass the limits of normal music and touch a superhuman level. I'm really impressed and I've felt shivers running down my spine so intensely like I've never felt before from a playing band. :)
A perfect example of playing an instrument to make music versus playing WITH an instrument, like a child who has their favorite toy or game figured out to a degree where it becomes an "effortless art" when playing.
If they really like it, they’ll call the police and tell them. Sometimes, the cops will even take you back to their office so you can share it with others!
Have loved this piece since my grandmother took me to see Peer Gynt at the age of 6 a looong time ago. I think of it as the "We Will Rock You" or "Smoke on the Water" (riff-wise) of classical music. Always recognizable and completely unforgettable, esp the way these guys play it!
+JuggaLuke Classical music and Metal have alot more in common than you may think dude... I swear that if Beethoven or Mozart was alive today they would have been a Motorhead fans.. Why do you think most of the great composers absolutely loaded up the bass sections of their orchestras to have a really, really deep bass sections?...... Because they where very early Metal heads....
+lardonirdesco Symphony orchestras were the rock-bands/electric-guitars of their day---the only thing for which a composer could score which would adequately fill a large-enough auditorium to make it all *worth* while. Follow the money.
I just talked to jesus and he said that he and Edvard Grieg were talking the other day at the water cooler and Edvard said he thinks this version kicks ass.
I have this piece in my “Intensive Therapy” folder, when i’m really angry, i mean REALLY ANGRY, i’m listening to it 3 or 5 times and then all my negative and agression are vanishing

"OK. Want me to learn cello? I learn ya some fucking cello bitch." 🤣
Proof that Metal is not about the instruments, or the music piece, or even lyrics. Metal is a state of being. One can be Metal with even cellos.
Love it!!!! So FUCKIN true!!!!!
Boom!🧙♂️
i mean, i'm pretty sure metal requires at least one stringed instrument
Its the drums
@@goldsrcorsource2551
well then there's acapella metal, like Van Canto. they only use drums

I love when they mix classical music with heavy metal!
¿Do you like Children of Bodom? Downfall may be something you would love 😁
Classical music is where metal came from
This WAS Metal back in the day. Whenever I hear this I picture a bunch of powdered wigs skanking and moshing it up.
@@luka_apic Exactly. Beethoven was metas AF in some songs.
This is an interesting episode of Metalocalypse.
Yet another example of how classical music and metal are one and the same. Classical musicians weer the metalheads of their day.

Apocalyptica: Making the Cello sexy for the 21st Century.
Yes
sounds like doc brown had something to do with this since you said 21st century
yaaaassss
Look at TwoCellos' rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit, originally by Nirvana.
Apocalyptica overall is so damn epic it's quite sexually arousing to listen to (to me, idk. Can't be the only one).
I wonder if that is what this sounded like when it dropped in 1867 compared to other compositions of the time.
This was killer!

+Elena Tuktarova Nice grammar.
+Christian Parillo
Well, there're lots of typos, but honestly who here can say he never made any?
+Elena Tuktarova "he" because apparently the only people who listen to metal are men.

Mostly - yes, but not the only :)))))
For anyone interested: the melody played 0:58-1:02 is a part from the national anthem of Finland. Great video! Cheers

No no no. You’ve died and gone to hell, you certainly want to pass the afterlife with satanic metalheads instead of virtuous bigots.
