Why Richard Mille watches are OVERRATED?! | Chrono24

- Опубликовано: 29 июн 2024
- Today we are today about why Richard Mille watches are overrated. Richard Mille is an independent watch brand founded by Richard Mille and Dominique Guenat in Les Breuleux, Switzerland in 2001. The brand rose to prominence through a mix of aggressive R&D and ambassador-driven marketing. Anyone who’s seen an internet “watch spotting” article will recognize Richard Mille’s signature barrel-shaped cases and bold color palettes. RM is perhaps best known for its celebrity clientele, including Drake, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Neymar. And those are only the celebrities with one name!

Loved the comment: "Just go buy a G Shock". On point.
agree
Totally agree
Everyone should have a G-Shock regardless of how much money they have.
@@campshay19 agree
@@campshay19 I hate the sheer beast of most G0shock are on your wrist as well sas their stupid gay resin case and bands. Although, I recently found my best quartz on Casio Solar Ana Digi waveceptor, not as tough as G-shock I admit, but it is a fcukin beauty.
Finally, someone mainstream stating the obvious. I refrain from criticising for fear of being a troll. I only see grey market dealers getting rich flipping them. Horrid watches!
If idiots are willing to pay the money for them fair play to them
The prices are frightening a friend on mine purchased one on retail sold it after two months made £20,000 profit
@@daytonarol3x yeap. They grey market prices are at the point where genuine customers don't even want to keep them knowing the kind of money they can make selling them on.
i also hear them say RM's are beautiful. They clearly haven't seen an a lange sohne or a patek. You can get a ZEROO T4 that looks similar and way way cheaper
Grey market dealers are getting rich alright. But it's more from overpriced Rolex. At least Patek and AP are actually rare birds in comparison. Very very few grey market hypemen have the bank 🏦 to make a living off flipping RM. You can probably count them in the single digits. Now count how many grey market dealers are having their best year ever. Probably in the thousands worldwide.
For me RM watches look like they are designed by some kindergarten kids. Totally not my cup of tea.
RM would be an interesting choice in the $10-15k range. At $250k+ it’s just stupid.
Good point!!!
Agree
For me CVSTOS are the nearest to the RM..I usually say Cvstos are RM for not rich people…
@@felixmarks9352 ha… thank you for the introduction. Certainly looks a lot like RM at 1/10 the prices 😂
Yea..Cvstos have very nice timepices..very cool and modern timepice You can find,Cvstos is confort for wear, they have inhouse movement …and I love barrel shaped look on Cvstos with sqeleton or saphire dial..I have apurtunuty to see in alive Cvstos Shah limited to 10 pices and Cvstos Pilot with red details (I mean that was limited to 200pices)..great timepices for good price ..👍
One of the most honest and best watch reviews, actually no, product reviews of any kind , that i have ever seen.
Thank you!
Back in 2000-2001 Richard himself "worked the floor" on Baselworld. He bought a pass for the whole week and his way of marketing his product was to demonstrate how sturdy they where. He repeatedly threw the (then apx 80K$) tourbillon on the ground in front of all the other brandreps and customers and showed them it was still working just fine when he picked it up; "Imagine doing this with one of your tourbillons" he smirched at Patek, Breguet and AP. Back then it was a really cool statment, an important message and the crowd did se his point: If you're gonna pay for a tourbillon, make sure you get your moneys worth and it´s one you can where at all times. Now days he´s the guy offering insanely overpriced products to that serves no other purpose besides to exhibition them just like he felt Patek and AP did with their tourbillons. So he´s com full circle, but in the worst possible way.
On 2 RM Nadal timepice the mechanism was cracked while Nadal was playing tennis after that RM was introduced RM Nada 27-03 shock resistance tourbillon.. who could withstand the pressure from playing tennis..2RM timepices are stolen from Nadal in hotel room(only one they find)because he dont want to broke the RM when he play tennis..this was when he was on turnament in Paris and Australia I mean..
Mr. Wyler hit Wyler timepice from the top of Eiffel tower and timepice was working still..
RM timepices are probbly lighter minimum x5 times than others tourbillon (Breguet,AP,Vacheron Constantin) Mr. Mille should have thrown the RM from a bigger height than the heavier clocks..his timepice probbly have more than 100gr. and RM probbly have 19gr.
@@felixmarks9352 I doubt Richard is crying when he checks his banking statement but as far as any other statement goes his account has dropped below zero. It´s a hype product offered to people who has advisers on what to say, do and wear and that kind of sums up the amount of love and soul that goes in to a RM.
Yes ,I know Mr. Mille is billioner..but to be honest people pay marketing last years not inovations and complications and thats the biggest problem …
I'm the old guard and I love high end complications and quality like story and history..
I'm not a fan of marketing and hype watches and I'm especially disgusted when people sell Rolex dials with error for big money, cost an unimaginable amount and that's for garbage..rich people buy RM timepice only because they know that pore people will not have chanse to wear timepices from the same RM brand..Mr. Mille is expert for marketing and thats all,he also have lucky because AP suport RM..but F.P.Journe is top for me and much bether manufacture..
Why flex tourbillion if you can't even read the time on your wrist watch
@@joboilibres9593 if you want to read time why don’t you just buy Apple Watch?
"JUST BUY A G-SHOCK!!!" 😅😂🤣
“Bring your taste level up to your tax bracket “… Love it.
Totally agree, I don’t care if celebrities wear them. I wouldn’t even pay $9.99 for that cheap looking sh*t, I mean come on, you got to be stupid rich or simply stupid to buy one. Buy a nice Rolex and a badass house and take a vacation. Those celebrities even get those watches for free as an endorsement come on!
Amazing! Who would've ever thought that the retarded would end up being the richest and have a market catered exclusively for them. It goes to show that Darwin was wrong.
Very true, it just goes to show even the Ultra Rich can be lemmings.
I thought I was being mean when I said they are not even worth $1000. But $9.99!! I agree with you. The replicas sold in the streets of Mongkok, Hong Kong, are more honest for what they asking. $249.99 and that is $240 too much.
I hear ya, but, if you come across a legit RM052 for $9.99, buy it! I'll pay you $99 for it.
A Zenith Defy El Primero 21 is a super hi-tech watch with a 1/100 sec chrono for 10k...it comes in titanium, ceramic, carbon, gold. Beats almost all RM in looks and technology.
Spot on Burt!👍
Idk......too many things inside, looks like Alexandre Christie or police watch
Owing one👍👍👌👌
Problem is the Zenith label on glas. Looks kinda cheap. Without it would be perfect
Thank you!!
RMs are for rich people with little taste and money to literally THROW AWAY! Total status symbol.
lol. people keep blaming RM while they worship Patek and buy nautlius and aquanaut eventho both are the brand's cheapest models, those people are also okay with 400/500k nautlis anniversary time-only-watch, but blaming rm with their beautiful skeleton watch
The first Richard Mill video that I liked 👍🏻👏🏻
Love the fact that someone stood up and made a logical, and very articulate set of points, REALLY appreciate this, thanks!!
Love this video. So refreshing to see such an honest and free opinion piece.
Glad you enjoyed it!
the most fulfilling 9 minutes and 49 seconds on RUclips!.. thanks Thomas!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am not a watch expert but I think RMs are like modern art. Everyone pretends to like them because they don’t want to seem like they don’t understand. RM is said to have “genius marketing” but it’s really just “all the cool kids are wearing them so if you don’t like them, you’re not cool”. They used middle school tactics and adults fell for it 🤦🏼♂️
They made it expensive so it appeals for those who have more money than they know what to do with. It’s as much about saying, “look how rich I am” rather than values in the watch itself. Rolex are doing the same…in my opinion.
Totally agree . I view RM just as an expensive Hublot.
The best RM’s are made in China!, for around $200~$400 that’s USD!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@cd1934 😆
@@cd1934 China also make $2 Rolex watches
And in comparison Hublot has at least a couple of watches that look decent
I’ve always viewed RM as a flex watch. No different than an obnoxious Lambo. People that want to show off their money will always be there to buy these types of products that scream “look how much money I have”.
IMO RM will last as long as their watches signal wealth 🤷♂️
Not flex Richness celebrity symbol
Lambo drives crazy, it has stunning engine, sounds like a hell cat... RM is just piece of nothing - No history, movement not even Close to PF, VC etc... If you like this style just buy frank muller.
Lamborghinis are actually cool though.
Fully agreed. I’ve always thought that this brand is over rated and really shitty watches in comparison to other watch brands. Truthfully has nothing to do with price. Seen some Rolex, Patel’s, APs and FP Journe that are just as expensive. The difference is that the latter mentioned brands have an actual history and have been around for forever and will hold their value if not appreciate in value.
I wish I had that kind of money......to buy me a PP Calatrava 5107 36mm in rosegold. Famous rappers and high-end soccer players are monsters, AMAZING skilled people, most work really hard and they deserve the world, no doubt about it, but they definetely need urgent guidance in the watch universe.
The fascination with RM seems to be more about everything *but* the watches. Not saying they are not horologically significant but at least the people who buy them, their only interest seems to be owning the watches. For that kind of money there are so many better options out there it's not even funny. As far as the future, two words: Franck Mueller.
RM is kinda like a private club pass IMO. For that I rather buy Journe.
All of those celebrities will wish they had not thrown away their money on this over hyped junk. They would do well jumping out now and getting an AP or Patek or high end Rollie
The entire episode I just kept saying in my head “Just buy a G-Shock!” And then he finally said it and I was like Thank you! Literally these RM’s are so ugly for the price. I hate how companies act like Aluminum or Carbon Fiber or Titanium is even expensive when it’s that small amount of material. I think people hear Aluminum and Titanium and Carbon Fiber and think “Ooo it’s gotta be expensive” but the materials itself costs hardly anything especially with so little material needed.
Or "Just buy 4,000 G-Shocks!"
Internal discussion at Chrono24 for this video:
But Thomas, think about our commission!
😂
They have enough stuff to earn commision with…not depending on RM
Overrated ?, that's an understatement, RMs, is the perfect example of what advertising can do for a product, it's all about the hype that's all
So glad you keep it real my man! THANK YOU!
You hit it out of the park! As a high horology collector (Patek, Vacheron, Voutilainin, F.P. Journe, Moser, JLC etc), I fully agree with your assessment. Grey market dealers have hyped the prices of many brands and are enriching themselves off the gullibility of their customers.
Thank you Thomas for this video!
Thank you for watching!
Hey Thomas great content! hope you can afford an RM one day and buy the alternative :D
😅😅😅
A stable point for me is that when I look at a watch, I must be able to immediately see what time it is. Mille watches fail on that first point (as do many others). Add to that the crass design and stratospheric price, and I give them a big no.
1.3 million. Imagine the pieces you could have for that.
What would you buy for that money? 😅

Lol, wow...that's actually a fantastic comparison!
fabulous to see well thought out criticism of both design and "collector" behaviour. applause.
and with 1.3M USD you can buy that G-Shock, a bottle of water, a compass, a mirror, a Hermes bag to put it all in, and still have enough left to be driven around in your own Rolls-Royce SUV so you'll never need any of them anyway.
If you can afford a RM then you would have all that above mentioned items and more . Either way you are still spending money. Sounds like a whole bunch of people upset that they are not in the position to contemplate a RM. Instead to buy a whole heap of other 💩instead .
@@ManfromJapan12 you could afford a RM, it seems, and still not get sarcasm.
enjoy your overpriced ugly watch; I will look forward to my F. P. Journe instead.
@@rapopescu by all means I will. I own F.P T-30 in rose gold as well . My point is that if people have the money they will buy what they want so deal with it . Why all this concern and hate for a brand that most of you will never get near.
@@rapopescu I own several "over priced " time pieces. I am not going to mention them . There is nothing wrong with wearing them either . Its a great feeling to have a beautiful woman on your arm and a ridiculously expensive watch on your wrist. I am that guy who you see in the traffic in his " over priced" luxury car as well. Instead of being critical of people like me , try to make the most of your life and be all you can. If that makes you wealthy then so be it as there is nothing wrong with that either. You have limited chances to obtain the unobtainable so go for it . I’ve been a fan of RM for a long time but I do agree! There’s something I’ve loved about them since the late 2000’s but I could never bring myself to buy one due to having other timepieces I wanted. Now I definitely won’t with current prices
love the video...love the analysis ...:) "Just Because You Can doesn't mean you Should"...:)
Unfortunately I see RM hype only at the grey dealers, like everybody is competing who has more RMs or costlier RMs, but when you see these guys they are tasteless completely. And yes maybe they are interesting as a watch in rotation, but as much as Hublot was, and we all know what happened to Hublot…
You spoke the minds of the 'saner' side of the watch community! 🙌
Everyone has a pov, and from a long time watch collector these don't scratch my itch. Now a A.Lange is where I would go if....but if I wanted exotic materials I would probably look to Hublot and maybe Spirit of BB. Great video Thomas, and thanks for the share!

great mate .. your opinions were very true, and that thing about 'go get a G-shock' you nailed man...great
I totally agree! Thank you for the video
So, "Diddy" is the arbiter of good taste? Next-level gatekeeping.
Yes. He a refined person who knows style
What is your opinion of the Greubel Forsey watches?
Great timepices and young watchmakers, they enyoj in my respect ..they are in the same ‘roof’ with AP and RM ..they first introduce double tourbillon I mean, thay have amazing movements and by my opinion they are not marketing or hype brand because they are more focused od their own story with inovations and high end complications ..they also have very beautiful and recognize design and I respect them more than RM…
If only they put as much effort into styling as they do into high tech materials and R&D! Great video.
An excellent video Thomas and thank you so much. I think all the points you make are very true especially the one about getting a G Shock instead if you need a watch for high performance activities. One of RM's main unique selling points is their watches' shock resistance for sports men and women. But if you really needed a watch whilst doing these activities would you really use one that cost this much when a G shock can do a better job for a few hundred bucks or less. They also look much better.
I love RM, they are making what their customers want. They are watches for the guy who wants to have the most expensive watch in the room and want to look like they have the most expensive watch in the room. I would rather see a rapper or hype beast wear this than stick a bunch of diamonds on a Patek or a AP. The point is to flex, the point is to be gaudy, the point is to be so obvious that someone asks you "what is that?" You will never convince Lil Yahty that the spring drive in a Grand Seiko is actually a classier piece, because that's not why he bought it.
Thank you for sharing Clayton!
A company that makes watches exclusively for rappers and their wannabes. Yeah mate. Go for it. By the way, are you a rapper?
Clayton...I think you've hit on an important point but not in favor of longevity. I see a point coming very soon where every person who has the means has their RMs and they run out of people who want these. In all the watch clubs (redbar etc...) I've ever participated in there's one or two guys who have or want one but everyone else is a hard pass. Unless there is serious evolution towards more palatable watches RM has an expiration date. Just my opinion...
How can you dare!!! … to be so honest 😂 I could not have said it better👍
Beautiful video.I actually stated the same thing on IG page but most people don’t get it and they think I’m hating. On a 80% history will repeat itself on RM watches like FM,Hublot & Corum watches
Great comments and perspective. I completely agree and grateful you had the balls to do this review. I have a new McLaren 765LT, that I love to drive and decided to check out its Richard Mille watch on Chrono24's website. OMG...the watch is more than my car! I'm more of a fan of Rolex, AP and Patek...at retail that is. Even these watches are double or triple now on secondary market. I did buy one Rolex James Cameron Deep Sea on Chrono24, bc it's impossible to find at retail but well under $20k.
Thank you for sharing ☺️ and decent taste 🏎
Absolutely in line with your views on the pieces, the image and the risk! BUT… how damn clever is Richard Mille? Seriously, let’s all bow down to the genius of the marketing that’s gone into creating the brand and the continued sale of the Watches! Some years ago I read a fantastic article on this subject and it explained beautifully how setting the point of entry so ludicrously high immediately created an exclusive club that extroverted HNW individuals just simply couldn’t resist! Offer up some money can’t buy days out (eg, Monaco F1), some exclusive brand partnerships (eg. McLaren) and you have the perfect money magnet! Honestly there is literally nothing I like about the Watches but they are absolutely the go to analogy for pure marketing genius and ego exploitation, and for that they should be applauded! 👏🏻
Yep I agree because personally it is a watch I would never wear based on the fact that it just looks downright outrageous... childish even it looks like some kind of Transformer or something
I like the shape of RM's but I feel they are too thick, there are some alternative companies that make RM style watches - that are a lot thinner and definitely a lot more affordable.
Thomas, you are making some bold styling decisions today! denim shirt and a blazer... I DIG IT!
Very good comment and analysis
Do they look cool yes, but not 200k cool.
I think they're gaudy and looks like an overpriced G-Shock. I feel like my opinion would probably change if I could afford one though. I'd probably still end up buying one just because I can.
hahha, a nice callback just cuz you can doesn't mean you should~~
Totally agreed. Some persons enjoy free watches plus sponsorships while the unwise persons spend exceptionally high high price to this brand.
Best video ever! Great job! OMG before watching this I told a friend they are overly priced G-Shock watches! And then you say it!!! Awesome
You have some good points. However the earlier versions like the RM05 & RM10 are quite different being smaller in size and without the over the top styling. Still the highly recognizable case shape, use of high quality materials and unique design is there. By the way in the early 2000’s the RM05 & RM10 only cost in the $30,000 range. Anyone who purchased them then is quite happy now.

If I was a billionaire and won the lottery on top of being rich I would still not buy an RM. Even if I got it at retail and with a discount I still wouldn’t. I love watches and don’t talk about hating brands but the look and overall style of the watches I can’t
Richard Mille is not overrated.
Another aspect is that they aren't all perfect, and flawlessly finished, which they should be for this price.
Such a class dude, class style, class hair, class watch, and right on point. Richard mille is for people who just want to say they are rich.
They’re overpriced but I’d rather have a 400k Richard Mille than a 400k nautilus 💀

A very down to earth review and opinion, is there a Master Watchmaker behind the RM brand to warrant this high value watch or is it just the design and metals used.
i think you forgot one very BIG point, you can make any kind of sport with RMs and the movment wont break. Go golfing with an AP chrono or Tourbillon and you will definetly need a service
Thank you for your honesty, we all think the same...it's not even a technical wonder...
On point brotha

Very sensible video

so refreshing to hear your view, which I share.
I don't think that they look good and I don't think they will age well like other high end watches.
Just buy a G-Shock! I love this video! Tackles one big problem in watch enthusiast world. Enjoy watches is not about money!
“Just buy a G-Shock! “- best advice.
I quite like pre-owned Franck Muller for Tonneau style watches. 😄🤔
Right on, I loved the G-shock reference.
Just saw someone else's post, and couldn't agree more, I wouldn't trade my El Primero for one of these, unless I could sell it immediately.
Excellent video!! Couldn’t agree with you more. I’m my opinion RM is just a hyper expensive version of what Franck Muller did and more specifically what Hublot did with the Big Bang. Thank God that AP pulled out in time when they were doing limited editions of the ROO of everything and everyone. For a moment I thought they were going to do a limited edition of in honor of Michael Jordan’s grandmother. Another example of hyped “unique” brands was Romain Jerome with the Titanic watches, ugly as hell but they caused some interest during the time. Now you see those watches selling at 50%, 60% or even higher below retail, brand new. I will give credit to RM the excellent job they did in marketing, I’m sure a lot of brands envy the popularity that RM has reached in such a short period of time. Im certain the quality is there especially in the movements since they use Vaucher for that but to price their pieces so high I think they are only shooting themselves in the foot on the long run. I think to build that “pedigree” status you need to prove yourself and it takes a lot more than 20 or so years. In short, it would be absolutely absurd to believe that they are worth what they sell for. I would buy every variation of a PP Nautilus before buying a RM. That’s just my opinion.
Totally agree, you can add AP as well...
Thanks to Richard mille, i went and bought a pre owned and technically new franck muller v45 for a heavy discount. It is much better than rm10 in every sense.
Imagine buying one of these instead of something like a VC, Patek Phillipe, A Lange, audemars etc…
I think the biggest problem about RM watches, is that most of them are made in a way that reading the time is about the last thing you can do on the watch. Patek, FP Journe, and Lange have clean beautiful dials. Turn them around and you find the porn sitting at the back. If RM were to take over Lange's brand, it would literally turn every watch around and have the case back facing the owner instead. These watches are not for telling time. They are way of giving a middle finger to everyone and screaming out, "i'm rich". It's the equivalent of taking a G-class SUV, slamming the suspension till the car is an inch from the ground, wrapping the car in gold color, with carbon stripes.
Well said,
Actually Richard Mille doesn't make watches, he is making washing machines.
Ah yes I understand.... the choice of Money Laundering folks 😋

100% , I do like RM for what they are but a Lange zeitwerst is my grail
I live in LA. I remember when that robbery in Beverly Hills took place. The robbers were idiots. They allowed the gun to go off and the bullet hit a woman’s leg at the restaurant. They tried to rob the guy sitting outside in this nice Italian restaurant called IL Pastaio. I went there many times. Anyway, they took the watch but in a few hours they caught them trying to sell it at some place downtown. Three of them. Including a woman. You do have to be careful nowadays on wearing a flashy watch in public. It’s sad but true. Todays world we live in!
100% agree with you on this even though I don’t usually agree with you on things.
Upon the first look at RM, I thought the same thing. Loud, G-shock-like, watches which teenagers with billionaire parents would wear. But it strangely grows on you after a while. When I first saw Panerai, I saw an oversized watch with design that could be easily imitated by fake watch makers. But I ended up falling for the brand and I am now a happy owner of a luminor. Perhaps, it's the marketing that influences the mind without which watch industry probably makes no sense at all. I mean, how do you ever justify spending so much money on any luxury watches when a cheap casio keeps better time which is more durable than Rolex submariner? Who really needs a watch at all these days when you have a smart phone???
well said and done
