Because there are more tasteless people than people with good taste. Same among rich people as poor ones. Good taste is something you are born with. Before RM only expensive watches you could buy were stylish ones. RM finally created something for the majority of rich people.
I think Adrian hit the nail on the head when he mentioned new money or nouveau riche which a lot of RM clients are. I don't think it's a question of poor taste, just more so different tastes 👍
@@MarcoFerranteWatches for me this different taste is a poor taste. Yes, there are more rich people and therefore there are more people with poor taste as most people don't have good taste. On the second market, plenty of AP and Rolexes and other luxury watches to choose but those watches are too good-looking. Totally fair of course! As Adrian said, these are storied houses and you know what you are buying into. Patek, AP, Rolex all make phenomenal watches 😁🙌

Alot of RM movement are not in house. That's a big problem to think you are paying for absurd amounts for it already. They are no where near Journe or even Lange
I definitely don't disagree. There are many that are groundbreaking and very technically innovative movements but at the same time they also do use Vaucher movements and still have huge markups for their pieces. Journe and Lange are just different. RM is more of a hyper watch where as Journe and Lange are very luxurious and also slightly more delicate 👍
@@MarcoFerranteWatches So i am not sure about their watch making capability. There are only a finite number of new watch maker apprentices that graduate each year. Most go to the legendary houses like Patek and Rolex. it's a big deal if you are into horology. Not sure any go to the house of RM. That puts into question their service turn around time. It can take longer to service a complication if it is not in house.
@@padraicsy7385 Yes but should be fine given they have a lot of resources aka $ and have close connections with the brands who are necessary to service their watches. That's without mentioning of course their own in house staff which I'm sure are more than capable 👍
The whole luxury goods segment has huge massive mark-ups but that’s fine as it is the very nature of the beast to create Veblen goods. If these were cheap then the luxury and associated Veblen good aspect would disappear instantly… People are drawn into luxury items primarily because these are expensive which projects an image of exclusivity, status, craftsmanship appreciation and what not but much less so for their genuine intrinsic value. Marketing and packaging help support these feelings which target the customers narcissistic fibre before anything else. It’s all fun though !
Thanks very much and I think that's a great idea! I've been wanting to do a video on the most important watchmakers of all time and can mention FPJourne and what he has done to help push and promote independent watchmaking 😁👍
At least with Pollock you knew how long it took for him to make a new exhibition, with RM you don't, have to admit they are innovative mainly with the case materials and the weight..., regarding shock resistance Rolex can do same, water impermeability usually 50M which is not very good... at the end it's a matter of marketing, let's see how they stand the test of time...
Their movements - at least the ones made in collaboration with Renaud & Papi - is also extremely innovative. Many complications RM has done we've never seen before. Things like the Nadal watches, Bubba Watson, Pablo MacDonough, etc. which are shock resistant to an insane level are unlike anything else that has ever been done before. And have to give credit, their marketing has no doubt carried them to a level in a period no other brand has ever been able to achieve 😁🙌
RM's remind me of the Jacob colour way watches of the early 2000's and their over value due to them being fashionable at the time, i know quite a few that lost their arse on them although it wasn't RM kind of money
i love the conent! Maybe you could put some accoustic panels on the wall to pull down the reverb? It would make the world of difference in audio quality.
You have zero knowledge in acoustics buddy. “Some accoustic pannels״ wouldnt do anything really. You have to use a shitload of foam or an acoustics expert to tune the room properly
If I had the money for an RM an RM would be the last thing I bought with it and I think that's the point. Its not just a status symbol, its an 'I'm so rich I can piss away $300k+ on a GShock' symbol. Not only are they with one exception (new ultra-thin) all ugly but that kind of flex mentality irks a lot of people. RMs are new money, classless, pieces of trash with just enough technical innovation to cover for the absurd retail prices. Sorry guys, f****g hate them.
The flex mentality should not irk anyone as people are free to have their own fun with their own cash, aren’t they ? Anyone upset could be jealous of that flexing person. I much prefer subtlety, discretion, etc… but I don’t mind others different behaviours, it’s entertaining 🥳🤡
of coarse i have to like it ,how could you not. love the analogy it was spot on. fun to see adrien being the one who couldn't get the words out fast enough, enthusiasm marco not so much. Thanks great perspective.
rumors have it .the hype is over, and the prices of these watches (in the grey market) are in the free fall.. maybe will start to see discounted prices from the ADs.. who knows. time will tell. i'm not an expert and can't confirm what i heard... but that's what i'e been told from a few sources in the business.
RM has built a super valuable brand through celebrity endorsements and deliberate scarcity. Clearly they are geniuses at this. But I don't think their watches will stand the test of time. They simply don't have the heritage and timeless design. To me personally, they look like they were made by Lego.
Agree regarding how they became such a valuable brand. Style and design, I understand where you are coming from. Definitely a polarizing watch design and brand overall. As Adrian said this is like the Pollock of the watch industry and you either love that or simply just don't understand it. And explaining it to someone is no doubt very difficult haha 👍
This was a great segment! We should do more of these on a particular series of watches say 2499, 3970,5270, etc then go into an RM chronograph series, then an RM round watch series, I think with your knowledge and experience this would be quite unique.
Thanks for the kind words! So I actually just completed an article to be posted on our Grey market magazine about the history of Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronographs and did just film a video on "Cheap vs Expensive Chronographs" which should come out soon. So the chronograph topic will be covered in a good amount, just a matter of putting the finishing touches. But can definitely do a more in-depth video on the history of chronographs 😁👍
Marco, Would you be able to dissect and discuss about the various chronographs triggers, their advantages and disadvantages with the perspective of the manufacturers and the users. For instance Omega the calibre 321 (Lemania relied upon by many of the best manufactures) is a column wheel actuated chronograph but why would Omega switch to a cam actuated mechanism for 1861 and 3861 calibres ? Is it because it is cheaper to manufacture, that it requires less maintenance, etc…? Which method is the most horologically noble ?
Ladies and gentlemen I will be graduating from Rolex to RM Crazy to think A Rolex was a dream of mine when i had nothing. Now i own a few solid gold Rolex’s that are not even 2 years old. Never stop chasing!! RM 😍 next to my collection I promise
The perfect RM= RM29 in Rose Gold 🌹 I’ve had the RM10 & 29 in titanium, as well as the RM30 in that metal but the 29 in Rose is the sweet spot and growing very rare. Sold mine a year ago and recently got it back from the buyer and can’t even put into words how glad I am that I did 💫
It’s funny I see the RM knock offs and they are like $50-$100 which is what the real watch looks like it’s worth to me .. they really are just an analog g-shock with astronomical mark ups
I love rm, but they all kind of fall under the same mold most of the time, like same shape, just way different accents of colors, still a very impressive looking and feeling watch and was my favorite until I learned about the craftsmanship of Patek and Breguets, just nothing else comes that close to perfection in my opinion.
While I can admire their outside the box thinking The story of the brand and how fast they burst onto the scene in such a saturated market to make a world class time pieces that would eventually sell at a premium the craftsmanship and attention to detail the variety of materials and the insane and complicated movements I’ve never really been a big fan of rectangular or square watches but besides that most of them just look too flashy and gaudy for me and kind of tacky with some wild color schemes and I have a big wrist and like big way he’s but some of these are just monsters I feel like the big watch trend has kind of gone by the way side. So you’re paying 6 figures for in some cases a plastic case although it’s just as much or more than precious metals is crazy to me and top it all off you don’t even get a bracelet! it’s either rubber or a Cheap looking elastic band and you could buy a Rolex for the price it would take to replace some of those bands. I prefer the iconic heavy hitters if I’m going to spend this much it might sound crazy but I’d honestly rather have panerai, a grand seiko, or even an omega over a Richard Mille
The $2million RM Drake bought which is the same watch worn by Nadal looks as if it was won at a fair ground for $2……it is ridiculous to buy a watch for $2million that is made out of plastic and is not as impressive as the watches made by companies who are knocking that watch off!
Great conversation. I don’t like Richard Mille watches though, Ok these are light but extremely large bricks 🧱 on the wrist. I think they should do slimmer models but of course not as ridiculously slim as the Ferrari one which is ugly by the way…
Personally I would also. But it's about different taste. I think Kari V and Journe vs RM are simply too different to compare despite being at similar price points. RM is more of a hyper sports watch that is solidly built whereas Journe & Kari are more classy, elegant and complex pieces that are more elegant and delicate feeling. Both have their own merits for ownership 😁👍
Great video on RM! You covered this brand with knowledge and I’m thankful for your video, I will be purchasing one (one day) and you helped me in the process.
So as a wealthy person I am ,do I have to buy a million dollar watch to know what time it is . I would know spend no more than 10k gold watch other than that is pure marketing
I typically don't like RM because of the culture around it. The frat boy, hype beast consumer can get me so repulsed on a brand. At least it's not a Hublot. I can see that an RM has high engineering in their peaces. Maybe I'll buy an homage in my wait till I win the lottery.
It’s just so different it works. It’s just another new kind of watch kinda. No matter what watch what dial or complication it always looks kinda similar. This ist just so different
Putting your money in RM is like putting your money in FTX. Don’t cry once it’s worth nothing and money laundering funds are moved to the next product. Nothing justifies the inflated prices of this products.
I think it's definitely a polarizing brand and not for everyone. As Adrian said in the video, it's like a Jackson Pollock - you either get it or you don't and explaining it is near impossible 😁👍
Crypto crashes…; Property crashes, anything crashes..but will it rebound? Only Time will tell. Try going to RM boutique, you will not even see “exhibition only” time pieces. Not even 2 years waiting list.
I agree, I think it would make sense for RM to discontinue a few models they have been producing for a while. Glad you enjoyed this and thanks as always for the support 😁🙌
Richard Mille is a brand begging to BUST! When people are "banking" on an item, as Adrian mentions his Indonesian contact, instead of their own volatile currency, then it shouts "perception"! Not true value, but a perceived value. Richard Mille are incredibly expensive due to the fact that wealthy individuals want to be seen wearing the brand. That is NOT true value. Anyone who has been in the restaurant or nightclub or fashion industry can tell you that, what is highly desirable today by Mr. Richie Rich could so very easily be "meh......!" tomorrow. You can bet on it!
Yes you're not totally incorrect but like all things the true value of something is only what someone is willing to pay. Hard to truly know what someone will be willing to pay down the line of course 👍
True value is difficult to establish but let’s say it’s what the market is willing to pay for that product, good or commodity at anyone time… but I would also say that true value is also the perceived fair value for that buyer otherwise he would not buy… So I don’t see much of a difference between the two…
Great video! I love watches, but I have yet to see a RM watch that looks "good" to me. They all look incredibly busy, thick, unusable, and quite frankly ugly. I wouldn't be a fan of RM even if they were affordable.
Kinda like real estate broker...a watch costs more than a house.....exceptions But run the math I build design satellites there's no formula to equal I think its shows"Early to bed early to rise be wise advertise..all watches Triple retail will tumble.its past value for dollar!😂
"It's almost like the less precious metal you have in the watch, the more expensive it is." "Which is crazy, right? I don't think we've ever seen that." *1972 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in Stainless Steel has entered the chat*
Actually the modern Royal Oaks and even the vintage, the most expensive ones are in the precious metal cases. Be it in the jumbo models, chronographs, perpetual calendars, etc. All precious metal Royal Oaks within their respective product categories are always more expensive in gold vs in steel. The only one I can think of really is the Daytona in very rare instances at auction because even those have flip-flopped in recent years 👍
@@MarcoFerranteWatches This is correct. I was moreso alluding to the fact that at the time of its release the Royal Oak was priced higher than its precious metal competitors while being made of a far cheaper metal and that this was an industry game-changer. No doubt subsequent releases in precious metals have not followed this trend.
Richard Mille are expensive because that's the only reason anyone would buy one. They certainly aren't pretty. They certainly aren't meticulously complicated and tiny. But they represent the idea of expensive. Exclusivity? don't be kidding me. They make as many watches as Lange does in terms of production, and I highly doubt they spend any more time to make their watches than Lange. It's all down to marketing.
So don’t get me wrong I love the watch but I think it’s very expensive with no one reason it’s over price too much those watches not supposed to be more than 50000$ it’s max for any of the watches
As always, well presented content here by the LB crew. That said, my prediction is that RMs will be the most overhyped watch of all time. Polarizing for sure and when RM crashes, it will be epic. These ugly watches will grow old and unappealing to the flex culture, main stream musicians/artists and high profile athletes at some point. The RM lacks timeless style and will become a very dated look that will grow unappealing over time like the DeLoreran or De Tomaso sports car...or dare I say, the Members Only jacket of the 1980s🤣! The big question is when...not if.
Thank you! Hey I am here to see the RM Market crash as I'd love to own one!! 🤣 Will be interesting to see how the RM market evolves over time for sure 👍
Great point Marco…the technology and materials are desirable and they are relatively unique pieces…I would have to get past the “transformer” toy look 😉!
Hum… Both the DeLorean and Panthera De Tomaso have their avid followers within the classic cars world… Although these do not command classic Ferrari or Lamborghini’s premiums, these are far from being considered as crap…
I understand where you are coming from but tend to disagree. Many RM complications like the RM001, the Bubba Watson, Nadal models, Pablo MacDonough, RM009 and a few others that are very groundbreaking in terms of their tech, materials, complications, etc. Yes part of it is hype no doubt, but there is a lot of substance behind the brand 👍
@@MarcoFerranteWatches Hi! Frank Muller was in the same platform and context as Richard Mille in the 90’s, yet they dissolved from grace! When RM started in 2000, all their watches had AP Caliber movement’s, for a decade! Whatever materials and complications RM use’s, it’s a fraction of what the true value is! RM 11-01 cost to manufacture maybe $25K, yet retail is $150K, gray $250k! The caliber 4401, the new AP Offshore and Royal oak chronograph’s are extremely more complicated and harder to make than a RM11-01, and O2! Have you ever seen the inside guts of a RM? It looks, elementary level, in comparison to a AP! So your justification, doesn’t merit it’s rationalization! Roman is truly the expert, his love and passion for AP, justifies everything!
@@simonassouline1230 So I don't disagree with a lot of what you have to say. Not all their models are made equal. Example a 65-01 is ultra expensive yet uses a Vaucher base movement which I'm sure doesn't cost them all that much to get from the Parmigiani group. Pretty sure RM markup is close to 300-400% overall so yes your thoughts are definitely warranted. My point was more centered around many of the technically innovative model RM released. And even their "cheaper" chronos like an RM11 is still solid. You engage the pushers and everything feels solid. Very different to an AP which feels very luxurious. RM is really a hyper hype watch is the best way I can describe it. It does feel solid and over engineered while your traditional brands like AP, Patek, Lange etc. feel luxurious and slightly more delicate 👍
We may disagree with these RM buyers buying RM for whatever reason but I could not tag them as brainless as they first have to generate the sort of money necessary to afford the lifestyle and the RM watch… Not your typical brain dead types or are they ?
Marco, do you think RM hasn't made a true Ferrari watch due fear of copyright litigation from Hublot? That's the only reason I can think of as to why RM hasn't made one.
I don't think it's a copyright issue to be honest. Shouldn't be an issue as Ferrari will just licence the name and brands should be free to do as they please with Ferrari's approval 👍
@@MarcoFerranteWatches I think RM could do an awesome automatic hybrid Ferrari F1 style watch...hear me out. Instead of a second hand, a small digital readout that counts in tenths of a second.
Marco, great content! Can you please do a session on FP Journe? Thanks!
RM is expensive because it goes under the radar. No one will know what it is or want to steal it because it looks like a $10 watch from China.
When you see under the loop in the intro, you know it's a banger.
Will do, thanks for the advice! Our studio is still a work in progress and will continue to improve over time 😁👍
You have zero knowledge in acoustics buddy.
No worries, I understand for sure. Definitely a polarizing brand for sure. Either love it or hate it really 👍
Right....Right....When is this filler word going to die? It's the new "like" and it's annoying.
If that's all you got from this video to be completely honest you really weren't listening at all
rumors have it .the hype is over, and the prices of these watches (in the grey market) are in the free fall.. maybe will start to see discounted prices from the ADs.. who knows. time will tell.
i'm not an expert and can't confirm what i heard... but that's what i'e been told from a few sources in the business.
Ton pay those qualities for a Plastic Watch is insane.
@@MarcoFerranteWatches i read your articles you wrote on Luxury Bazaar website, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Ladies and gentlemen I will be graduating from Rolex to RM
Crazy to think A Rolex was a dream of mine when i had nothing.
Now i own a few solid gold Rolex’s that are not even 2 years old.
Never stop chasing!!
RM 😍 next to my collection I promise
The perfect RM= RM29 in Rose Gold 🌹
I’ve had the RM10 & 29 in titanium, as well as the RM30 in that metal but the 29 in Rose is the sweet spot and growing very rare.
That's fair 👍
also, entertainers and rappers marketed it very well
100%! Athletes, celebrities, rappers and entertainers all played a huge role in RM's rise to fame for sure! 👍
Exactly
I love rm, but they all kind of fall under the same mold most of the time, like same shape, just way different accents of colors, still a very impressive looking and feeling watch and was my favorite until I learned about the craftsmanship of Patek and Breguets, just nothing else comes that close to perfection in my opinion.
The RM038 in ceramic white is the sexiest watch ever at any price. 😍
Thank you for the education fellas. Great content.
Awesome to hear this! Thank you for watching 😁🙌
Your man is a great interviewer!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed this!! I learned a lot doing this and was a ton of fun and hope that translated in the video 😁🙌
You guys make a great team
Thanks Jim! Awesome to hear this 😁🙌
The $2million RM Drake bought which is the same watch worn by Nadal looks as if it was won at a fair ground for $2……it is ridiculous to buy a watch for $2million that is made out of plastic and is not as impressive as the watches made by companies who are knocking that watch off!
You just know any combination of Marco,Adrian and or Roman is going to be good !
Great conversation. I don’t like Richard Mille watches though, Ok these are light but extremely large bricks 🧱 on the wrist. I think they should do slimmer models but of course not as ridiculously slim as the Ferrari one which is ugly by the way…
Thank you! And totally understand, as mentioned it is a polarizing brand. You do either love it or hate it 👍
They’re a timeless style in that they’ll look tacky forever
RM is the next franck muller
Awesome video, very informative as always- thank you🙏
Awesome to read this Gary! Thanks so much 😁🙌
i woud take voutilainen or fb journe before RM
Personally I would also. But it's about different taste. I think Kari V and Journe vs RM are simply too different to compare despite being at similar price points. RM is more of a hyper sports watch that is solidly built whereas Journe & Kari are more classy, elegant and complex pieces that are more elegant and delicate feeling. Both have their own merits for ownership 😁👍
Of course ! Timelessness vs hype !
Great video on RM! You covered this brand with knowledge and I’m thankful for your video, I will be purchasing one (one day) and you helped me in the process.
Why are RM watches so expensive? Marketing
Don't think it's such a simple answer but it has definitely contributed to it big time 👍
When …and only when you own one…then you know why.
So as a wealthy person I am ,do I have to buy a million dollar watch to know what time it is . I would know spend no more than 10k gold watch other than that is pure marketing
Can't wait for their Lewis Hamilton ferrari collab next year.
RM has been hyped to the max.
And you guys from the Grey market love it and have jumped the bandwagon.
They're one of only 7 brands in the industry to hit $1B in sales. To ignore them would simply be a big mistake 👍
I typically don't like RM because of the culture around it. The frat boy, hype beast consumer can get me so repulsed on a brand. At least it's not a Hublot. I can see that an RM has high engineering in their peaces. Maybe I'll buy an homage in my wait till I win the lottery.
Totally fair of course! Will be interesting to see how the RM market evolves over time and see how their prices change and fluctuate 👍
Another great video. As you both note, RM is definitely a polarizing brand.
Thank you! No doubt about it, definitely a polarizing brand as you can see from the comments hahaha 😁🙌
It’s just so different it works.
It’s just another new kind of watch kinda. No matter what watch what dial or complication it always looks kinda similar. This ist just so different
I have great difficulties to like the Richard Mille’s aesthetics.
Or the other way round
RM may be difficult to let you buy one, even if you have the money.
Montreal represent
Awesome!! 😁🙌
More RM videos please! 🙏
Awesome, will do! Hope you enjoyed this 😁🙌
@@MarcoFerranteWatches yes was awesome thanks for the content ❤️
That style of watch will go out of style in a few years
Putting your money in RM is like putting your money in FTX.
Great talk
Great conversation, bringing the knowledge!
Awesome to hear this! Glad you found it informative 😁🙌
People paying over 100k + for an emoji 💀
It’s not the double sided diamond crystal
So.. why are RMs so expensive..?
One of the reasons Richard Mille is so popular is because they sponsor so many of the teams of Formula 1 including Ferrari!
No doubt! Athletes, celebrities, actors, entertainers, etc. all contributed to the success of the brand 👍
RM is no different from Crypto and NFT marketplace, it will eventually crash.
Actually, to your point, RM prices follows similar pricing trends to bitcoin. It's a pretty interesting dynamic 👍
Crypto crashes…; Property crashes, anything crashes..but will it rebound? Only Time will tell.
Try going to RM boutique, you will not even see “exhibition only” time pieces. Not even 2 years waiting list.
Buying a RM is like buying a Lamborghini. Poor usability. Expensive to service/repair but it makes you feel rich.
If they discontinue those models. Prices will continue to increase. Great knowledge and content Marco and Adrian. Lots of love from Australia. Abs.
I agree, I think it would make sense for RM to discontinue a few models they have been producing for a while. Glad you enjoyed this and thanks as always for the support 😁🙌
They only make 20pcs/model, and discontinued after 3 years. Then introduce new model at $1million.
@@mikefabonacci5783 That's a ludicrous price.
True value is difficult to establish but let’s say it’s what the market is willing to pay for that product, good or commodity at anyone time… but I would also say that true value is also the perceived fair value for that buyer otherwise he would not buy… So I don’t see much of a difference between the two…
Love yours and anyhonys youtubes sooooo addicting when i seen your upload i got excited yeeeee
Awesome to read this! Thanks a lot for the support 😁🙌
A fool and his money are easily parted, no way anyone can justify RM prices. I'm happy that only rich fools can buy them.😂😂😂
The RM watches are so crazy overrated, but it's the marketing that do the sales.
No! Rolex is overrated. RM is exclusive and extremely well built. The Rolex is everywhere and not special at all.
@@Blastboost86 I don't like Rolex's.
Great video! I love watches, but I have yet to see a RM watch that looks "good" to me. They all look incredibly busy, thick, unusable, and quite frankly ugly. I wouldn't be a fan of RM even if they were affordable.
Richard Mille the King of watches
Kinda like real estate broker...a watch costs more than a house.....exceptions
But run the math I build design satellites there's no formula to equal
I think its shows"Early to bed early to rise be wise advertise..all watches
Triple retail will tumble.its past value for dollar!😂
"It's almost like the less precious metal you have in the watch, the more expensive it is."
"Which is crazy, right? I don't think we've ever seen that."
*1972 Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in Stainless Steel has entered the chat*
@@andytrox gotcha! That makes sense 👍
I don't think it's that simple a formula and I'd generally disagree on the quality of RM watches but of course, to each their own 👍
top video boys. You compliment each other well.
Awesome to hear this! Thanks so much 😁🙌
Simple answer: because people are willing to pay that much
RM is the Banksy of watch making.
So don’t get me wrong I love the watch but I think it’s very expensive with no one reason it’s over price too much those watches not supposed to be more than 50000$ it’s max for any of the watches
I understand where you are coming from for sure 👍
That's a lot of money to spend to look like you're wearing a Diesel watch.
The comparison to modern "art" was excellent: yes indeed it is overpriced crap.
@@bekind1784 😆 Understandable! On wrist personally I have come to love them but it truly does come down to personal preference 👍
I could not disagree more!.... about the Delorean 🤣🤣
They're so 1985 they're timeless.
Hum… Both the DeLorean and Panthera De Tomaso have their avid followers within the classic cars world… Although these do not command classic Ferrari or Lamborghini’s premiums, these are far from being considered as crap…
I learn 👊
Production is 1st rate
Awesome to hear this James! Thanks as always for your continued support on these videos 😁🙌
Complicated, their not, cheaply made yes! Junk, toy watch, 1 million percent overpriced yes, idiots buying yes! End results, hype and brainwash!
Racing fast from 0 up to 60 like a digital tachometer RPM display. 0 to 10, 11-20, 21 to 30, and so on up to 60. Skeletonized and exposed carbon fiber used throughout.
God I hope Hublot doesn't read this.
