I had a friend who worked the night shift at my local arcade who would open the cabinet and give me as many free games as I wanted. Until the day the arcade closed its doors I had the unbeaten high score on house of the dead. Those were the good days.
House of the dead 2 is arguably my favorite game of all time. Its just a really big shame that people only remember it for the voice acting and not the fun n fast gunplay and alternate paths.
@@ZillennialRosa nice, the second one was my favorite one as a kid, i still remember the first time i got judgement, they made it seem like i was going to fight this purple imp that look like he could not take a bullet, only to be toss this giant decapitated full armor knight that barely took any damage.
Yeah, HotD 2 was the gem of the series alright. I played 1-3 and sadly only got one shot at playing 4 in an arcade where I only made it to Temperance, but out of those 4 I gotta give it to HotD2. I play this for the boss fights mostly, and HotD2 has both some of the best and some of the most variety. In fact, I remember playing the boss rush so many times I beat every boss on the hardest difficulty, and beat some of the earlier ones ridiculously fast. 😅 Only one that might top it is 4 if I played it more, because I loved just about everything I saw from what I played of 4. 3 is good, but it sucks to see less bosses than the last game in it, and I personally can't look past that. I still like to play it, but I'd take 2 over it any day.

I have a strange relationship with Hotd3. It's my least favorite as a game. But it's my favorite as an arcade experience. Using that shotgun is so satisfying.
That's totally fair. I've never had the chance to experience it in an arcade. My only experience has been the Wii version and the XBOX port using a standard controller. I know a Round One that has the arcade version still with the shotgun, so maybe I should try it out next time I'm in the area.

I always loved The House of the Dead because while it had its cheesy elements, a lot of it was genuinely terrifying in hindsight. The sheer amount of rotting undead, just how damn strong and resilient they were, as well as how decayed the locales they resided in always stuck with me. I'll play 1, 2, Overkill, and Zombie Revenge any day of the week. The others I felt didn't have a lot of bite personally.
I'm so glad that HotD is still beloved. I spent so much time playing 2 on the Dreamcast and in arcades. I'm still sad that Sony delisted the series from the PS Store, as it just makes it harder for people to find and enjoy.
I was genuinely surprised with the amount of people watching this video. It's by far my most popular video and the source for like 90% of the subscribers I currently have. It's always sad when a HOTD game is unavailable. Modern consoles are severely lacking in HOTD games IMO. My dream scenario is to one day get a collection of the main 4 games with lightgun support or perhaps VR support on a system like the PS5 or PC or Switch 2 (whenever that releases).
some clarification. according to the HOD creators, the things you shoot were not exactly zombies, nor were they called 'zombies' in the game but just creatures created
I do remember hearing about that. Initially my video was going to be much longer and have more detail on the behind the scenes of the game, such as with early development and how the animations were originally motion captured. In the end I wanted to get this video out before Halloween so I focused only on the information I thought was important for people who were new to the series, and there are other great videos by talented creators which dives into the history and details like that. I just called them zombies to keep things simple.

HOTD is so nostalgic. Haven't thought about it for a while now and the moment I do, I find out they're making a remake. Can't wait to see how that turns out. Great vid.
14:00 oh wow, i had no idea there were so many different routes on the game and the fact that you can go by varying paths not only by saving scientists but also based on which zombie you get first or what button you tap or even whether you got shoved down or not is amazing. and to think the first ever game in the series actually got these options
I remember encountering the cabinet for 3 when I went to a Dave & Buster's for my brother's birthday. The table we were siduated at was next to the front of the screen. And as the start up ran every now and then you would hear the whisper "House of the Dead." It kinda scared the shit out of me. It wasn't until I went to my friend's birthday party at a pizza joint that I played 4. I didn't get to play it again until I went to this really cool bowling alley with this awesome selection of cabinets. I only got to Justice.
I remember the old bowling alley in my town had a house of the dead cabinet. One of the coolest, most unique arcade games I'd ever seen as a kid. I remember duel wielding the guns and miming along with the demo until I got the courage and money to make a first attempt and dying to the axe throwing guys.
This game (along with games like Crazy Taxi and Zombie Revenge) are the pinnacle of Sega arcade gaming around that time. They have this unique style of simple, fast paced, with a ton of self awareness without being outright parodies. The cheeze in HotD is *just right*!
The House of the Dead 2 is my favorite game of all time!!! The gameplay, the zombie designs as well as the atmospheric levels and story along with the kickass soundtrack made an experience I’ve never seen done again. Love this franchise!
Man this was a great video, excellent work. I'm a massive house of the dead fan and loved watching this retrospective. Also if you wanna play scarlet dawn at home it is available online for PC if you know where to look.
@@novarian8625 Are you asking how I got footage of the game? I used the Sega Model 2 emulator to play it on my PC. For a while, there was also an arcade cabinet of the game at my local mall. It left my mall a couple years ago, but I got some footage with my phone while I had the chance.
"Who puts the second and third games of any series together in a collection without including the first one?" The Thunder Force Gold Packs would like a word.
I actually really love House of the Dead 3, just not as much as the first or second game. I remember when House of the Dead 3 first came out, I was blown away by the graphics, and the physics, plus the shotgun is an excellent changeup from the first two games. For me personally, the first 3 games in the series are the only ones I really care about. I just wish Sega never lost the source code for the original game because that is still my favorite arcade game of all time. I remember when I used to endlessly watch the little opening scene before you would insert a coin. I would watch that over and over and over when I had no more quarters to spend. Me and my friends would act out the House Of The Dead in the backyard with our childish imaginations at that time. I did the same with HOTD 2, and 3 as well. I also remember when HOTD 3 was released for the Xbox back in the day, and I was so happy that HOTD 2 was a part of the package, but I always wondered why the first game was never included. The internet wasn't the information hub that it is today at that time, so I didn't know they lost the source code until I got much older.
An entire hour dedicated to my favourite game series? Yes please AND thank you! Personally I grew up with 2&3 on the wii and had 1 and 4 at my local arcades, with 1 being hidden at the very back of the arcade sadly
If I recall correctly Scarlet Dawn also has the characters to go back to he Mansion from the first game. Also Hotd 2 was my first game. When I was a kid I would always get nervous whenever I walked past by it. But after finally giving it a go I was enjoying every moment of it. Heck my dad and I always go to the arcade just so we can play it every Sunday

It's funny because I'm not even that big of a fan of other Sega properties, but House of the Dead is special to me for reasons I'm not sure I'll ever fully understand lol.
Really loved your video! Specially the parts related to HOTD 1 & 2, I played HOTD 2 when I was like 6 years old and I'm Mexican so at that time I didn't speak or understand English so I never noticed the cheesy voice acting until years later and it was hilarious, still, two of my favorite games and a hidden gem franchise. Thanks for the video! :)

You know you’re a gamer when you’re on a cruise ship in the Caribbean and you spend most of your time in the arcade on the ship playing house of the dead.
Oh my god this is literally the best review / understanding of The House Of The Dead games i have ever seen... I have never seen somebody nail it as much as you. I literally found myself agreeing with 99.99% of what you said, with the 0.1% being personal opinion. I was born in a certain era and so grew up on these games i bring that up to let you know i am a person from the original era meaning how impressed i am with your video..... This is the video that all should go to regarding The House Of The Dead serious :)
Thank you very much! I share a birth year with HOTD 2, but I still grew up with the first two games especially and I loved them. I'm happy you enjoyed the video and I look forward to talking about the series again when the remake comes out.
This is a great tribute and retrospective of such a great light-gun franchise. You breakdown the titles wonderfully, giving an honest criticism of the various sequels and spin off.
Both games also freaked me out, but I think that fear was what helped me remember it so vividly and want to come back to it later on. Now I get warm and fuzzy nostalgia from those games that used to terrify me as a kid.
@@ZillennialRosa is true it was that weird logo title with the figure of Rogan that look kind of creepy I barely noticed it after I play The House of the Dead 3 and I went back to playing part 2 I wasn't afraid of those zombies actually because they look kind of interesting like the Jurassic World dinosaurs
I first came across HOTD on holiday at the arcade when I saw a HOTD1 machine. I used to watch the looping intro and demo constantly, getting that fleeting glance of Magician as Curien laughed and wondering what the hell it was... the mystery really intrigued me and got me hooked on finding out.

Me and the little brother played all of them but HoTD3 is always our favorite, we had the Xbox version and 2 light guns. So many good memories. Thank you so much for this man!
I still remember my dad would always take a detour on our way to see his parents, so him and I could play THOD2 at one of the pitstop arcade cabinets. Although it game me nightmares at 6 years old, I cherish those memories now
It's interesting to note that the two-screened arcade machine used for HotD 4 Special was initially going to be used for the first game through what would've been known as the "Reflection System".
Its the first time I watch one of your videos and I love it. I love the house of the dead series and i'm happy you gave overkill and hotd4 the 'not bad at all' they deserve. i would really like to see you review "drop dead : dual strike" as it is an on rail pew pew with zombies that gave me a great hotd vibe.

As someone who's a fan of HOTD3, gotta say, your gripes with the game are very understandable. Totally see where you're coming from. Still love it, but now I see where it couldve been improved.
I’ve loved this series since I was a small kid and I’m glad that the first game got a remake. I’ve played all of them (except spin offs and scarlet dawn obviously) in an arcade a LOT of times due to them being at a local holiday location that I used to go to every single year growing up and I have so many good memories with this series. Playing 3 and 4 with the shotgun and uzi respectively in the arcades were amazing, even if 3 as a game isn’t the best in the series.
I recently played HotD3 again, and I discovered that headshots are much more powerful than in the previous games, making the reload less of an issue than it could be. Also, bosses get much easier once you notice that they cannot be harmed while their red health bar is still being filled. You've got to shoot them only after it gets full.
Part of why I struggled with HOTD3 as a kid was my inability to fully understand the finer details of the system. understanding that, and also playing it in an arcade with a shotgun controller probably would make a massive difference for me. I still have yet to play it in an arcade sadly.
You forgot 1 Spin off Chico: Zombie Revenge, a sega Beat em up, again with agents vs zombies, from the Dreamcast era. And with a complete stage called "Return to house of the Dead", where you fight again at Curien mansion (kinda) with guns, kicks, punches and holds. with the classic first stage HOTD BGM theme

The house of the dead was the highlight of my Saturdays at one stage of my life, even though few years before I was terrified of it, I thought I was bravest kid ever just watching demo trailer on menu. We had an indoor kids play area and it had a side room with two pool tables and a few fruit machines. This was the only arcade game we had there. We would line the coins up to reserve machine as long as possible to devour the experience for it fullest. The guns were like an artform in its own to master and we would ask the dude to give it a squirt of WD-40...shooting on it would OP and an adrenaline blast. Thankyou so much for taking me back to one of best times of my life ❤️xxx
The preservation of the earlier games in this series has been all over the place. A collection of all the core entries would be ideal, and the series definitely deserves it.
Hi there As you briefly mentioned in your video, I’m sure most of us could agree that The House of the Dead movie is perhaps the worst film adaptation of a video game. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that, even if you had the most competent filmmakers and studio, I don’t think The House of the Dead would actually work as a movie. Aside from ensuring that you got all the stages with all the boss fights, you would also have to set aside some time for the necessary character and story development for an adaptation, and the resulting film would just end up way too cluttered and convoluted. However, I did think about another form of media: a TV mini-series, like on HBO or Paramount. Think about it, each of the games has a series of chapters (the game’s stages), which could work almost like episodes of a TV series. Furthermore, if you focus on one episode (chapter), you can set aside enough time for character arcs and beefing up the story. I think it could be fantastic! What about you? Do you think House of the Dead might work better as a mini-series?
I feel like a miniseries is more appropriate for a lot of adaptations. The House of the Dead games are so short and have very little plot, so a film or miniseries would need to add a lot and end up barely resembling the games. The world of the games is more suited to gameplay over making any logical sense, but of course, any good director/writer could make something cool with the rights. It's not an adaptation that I'm asking for, but if they could pull it off, that'd be pretty rad.
Interesting! Our rankings are the exact opposite! My favorite HotD is III, I love the semi-serious take, the bosses are my favorite and the SHOTGUN dear lord in the arcade it is heaven. HotD 2 is my second favorite with branching paths and peak cheese. I like HotD 1 a lot too, it’s got a really nice theme, you’re totally right about the music being better in the first two as well. You should check out Mazan: Flash of the Blade and Golden Gun if you haven’t already.
HOD games were my childhood, lorewise it reminds me alot of Killing Floor I can see the similarities and inspiration that they took from this franchise.
I'm a huge fan of the series and I have and still play typing of the dead on my dreamcast. I can highly recommend both umbrella and Darkside chronicles as well. I'm definitely looking forward to the remake since that's the one mainline game I haven't played yet. Thank you for this video!
I feel warm and fuzzy when I think about these games too, which is really funny because when I was really little they used to terrify me. Now they comfort me.
39:48 I have a feeling this may only be a problem on the Wii version. I've looked up some footage of the arcade and PS3 versions, and I noticed that the reload animation seemed to play at an inconsistent speed in both: On the arcade version, the reload animation seems to be as fast as you physically pump the shotgun. For the PS3 version, the video I watched said you either shake the Move controller or pump the gun peripheral to reload (I haven't played this version myself so I'm taking their word for it). Reloading again seems to happen as fast as you physically pump or shake (not as sure as with the arcade version though). So only the Wii version seems to have a fixed reload time. I have this version, so next time I play it, I'm going to do an experiment and try and shake the Wii remote more quickly to see if you reload more quickly. Let's see how long it takes me to get round to this or even remember it.
I loved your video. It's great to hear from someone else that really loves THOD games as much as me (being my favorite series of on-rails shooters, along with CarnEvil (another severely underrated game)). Congrats, you really earned my like & subscription. Hope to chat with you sometime in the near future
There is an arcade near my town where they have really old arcade cabinets and that's where I got to experience the original h.o.t.d Last year and I fell in love inmediatly after playing
I used to play HOTD3 in the arcades and heres a reason why the reload animation exists. The arcade gun was a pistol grip and u had to reload it urself everytime, it was pretty damn fun but yeah i understand it doesnt work quite well with a gamepad
As I grew up, hanging out with my older cousin. We loved arcades and played many shooter cabinet games. When it came to HOTD 2. I normally was stuck as 2nd player and I loved Gary. If there is another HOTD game, I hope Gary is the protagonist.
Great discussion video on this series! It’s my absolute favorite arcade franchise. Here’s a fun fact though, if you have the PS Move Sharp Shooter attachment for PS3, you can actually use the shotgun pump on it for HoTD3 to simulate that actual arcade controller feel for it. Also surprised I didn’t see Zombie Revenge covered here since that was also a spin-off for the series despite it being a beat ‘em up. Anyway, you’ve got yourself a new subscriber!
I have to admit to being just a tad unhappy how you shat on the Saturn port of House Of The Dead. Despite it not being as polished as it should have been, (although tbf, its not far off what was expected of a 32bit machine) all the playability of the arcade machine is there. I bought a CRT specifically to play all my light gun games, Virtua Cop 1 & 2, Time Crisis 1, 2, 3, Project Titan, Crypt Killer, Area 51, Lethal Enforcers 1, 2, House of the Dead 2, 3, but the one i look forward to playing the most is House of the Dead on the sega Saturn, in my opinion, its the best 32bit light gun game ever made.
For what it is, the Saturn Port is fine. I overexaggerated my emotions when I discussed it, but I'm speaking mostly in terms of how it compares to the arcade version and how that original has never been faithfully ported to any console.
@@ZillennialRosa At the end of the day it was a port of a state of the art arcade game, cut down to fit on a, soon to be discontinued (in the west), 3 year old piece of hardware made for the home. By Tantalus's own admission, the game was on a deadline, they had no time to give it any polish. Its a shame Sega didn't port it themselves, but we all know by then, they were heavily invested in getting the Dreamcast hardware and software ready for launch.
Overkill was my introduction to House of the Dead. My family and I played the absolute hell out of that game on Wii. Until it was no longer playable. I love how it’s like a Grindhouse film. It’s so much fun.
Just found this vid cause HOTD is awesome. I would have found it amusing if you included the guest appearances of the characters such as the level in Sonic All Star Racing or how Agent G was Sega Heroes With HOTD 5 one interesting POV I want to bring up is how much the game stands out in the arcade scene as a shooter. When Round One took off so did rail shooters however many of the popular releases ( Transformers, Jurassic Park, Walking Dead) used mounted guns. HOTD 5 is one of the VERY few shooters (next to Time Crisis and Point Blank) that still has you freely carry the gun. It's such a nostalgic feeling that I missed
Good point. I recently got to play Scarlet Dawn and all the different buttons on the gun do help to make it stand out compared to the other games in the series. I personally don't like mounted guns as much, so yes, HOTD SD was pretty fun.
I just played the remake of the first fame and I like it. The soundtrack is altered because of copyright reasons but I like it a lot. I’m 28 and I was obsessed with beating this game as a kid.

"You Shall All DIE! HAHHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAAAA~"
That line is still engraved in my head years after beating the original through emulation.
Never for demise (death)
@@ZillennialRosa please do another video with all this
@@vykkye Once the remake comes out I plan on reviewing it. My plan is to also add a section at the end where I talk about the stuff I missed this time around and address some of the comments.
@@ZillennialRosa thank you, it impresses the hell outta me that your actually responding in the comments :) most RUclipsrs only do this to stuff that’s really egregious or is interesting, I like you responding to something constructively negative in stead of ignoring it, I’m a new sub but I already know I’m gonna love the channel

These are some hard games. When I was a kid I had a good 6 credits and would die on the first level of any HOTD game I played.
I truly love the camp. There's a certain magic to arcades around this era that I don't feel at arcades today. Maybe it's because I'm an adult now.
The House of the Dead 2 is my favorite game of all time!!! The gameplay, the zombie designs as well as the atmospheric levels and story along with the kickass soundtrack made an experience I’ve never seen done again. Love this franchise!
1 and 2 hold a special place in my heart. Such fun games.

@@ZillennialRosa btw where you play that HOTD1 with Arcade Version graphic?
@@novarian8625 Are you asking how I got footage of the game? I used the Sega Model 2 emulator to play it on my PC. For a while, there was also an arcade cabinet of the game at my local mall. It left my mall a couple years ago, but I got some footage with my phone while I had the chance.

I used to also be really confused about the absence of a home release of HOTD 1, and I didn't find out why until several years later.
An entire hour dedicated to my favourite game series?
Yes please AND thank you!
Personally I grew up with 2&3 on the wii and had 1 and 4 at my local arcades, with 1 being hidden at the very back of the arcade sadly
If you have access to a cabinet of the first game, cherish it dearly.
This is genuinely one of the best RUclips videos I have watched. Glad I invested the hour + time. Good job!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed me talking about video games for over an hour.

I first played this game when my parents took me on a cruise when I was 14, 24 years ago! I couldn’t tell you how much money I spent on this game, it was a life-changing favorite. You know you’re a gamer when you’re on a cruise ship in the Caribbean and you spend most of your time in the arcade on the ship playing house of the dead.
HOTD on a cruise ship sounds like my ideal way to play. That's peak luxury IMO.

I don't consider 3 the best, but it's still a good time. Every game is good.

Playing the remake revived my love for this series
I'm now seriously hoping we get ALL of them remade or re-released on the PC and modern systems
The preservation of the earlier games in this series has been all over the place. A collection of all the core entries would be ideal, and the series definitely deserves it.
Hi there
As you briefly mentioned in your video, I’m sure most of us could agree that The House of the Dead movie is perhaps the worst film adaptation of a video game.
Each game is good. I know III is pretty popular and beloved, so I'm mostly just being a contrarian.

Thank you.
Your video brings me this warm memories and the reason why I love arcade games.
I feel warm and fuzzy when I think about these games too, which is really funny because when I was really little they used to terrify me. Now they comfort me.
Arguably the most asked question in the series: "Where the fuck is Gary?"
Truly the most important question of our lifetime.
39:48 I have a feeling this may only be a problem on the Wii version. I've looked up some footage of the arcade and PS3 versions, and I noticed that the reload animation seemed to play at an inconsistent speed in both:
On the arcade version, the reload animation seems to be as fast as you physically pump the shotgun.
Yeah, this problem is unique to the Wii version, which was sadly the only version I had access to for this video.
I loved your video. It's great to hear from someone else that really loves THOD games as much as me (being my favorite series of on-rails shooters, along with CarnEvil (another severely underrated game)).

On the track revenge the weird audio you hear was actually the last words of the peoples whos in the space shuttle challenger before it explode.
As I grew up, hanging out with my older cousin. We loved arcades and played many shooter cabinet games. When it came to HOTD 2. I normally was stuck as 2nd player and I loved Gary.
If there is another HOTD game, I hope Gary is the protagonist.
Gary supremacy. I really want him to come back.
Oh, that is a fun detail. And in my next video I will mention the stuff I missed in this video.
@@ZillennialRosa Awesome! Looking forward to it!
@@ZillennialRosa
At the end of the day it was a port of a state of the art arcade game, cut down to fit on a, soon to be discontinued (in the west), 3 year old piece of hardware made for the home.

P.S. This was an amazing vid. Thank you for sharing! I usually don’t watch video game channels but subscribed!
Fun fact: Curian's name is a play on words of Cure Ian. Ian is his son.
I thought his name was Daniel Curien
@@ZillennialRosa His middle name is Ian. It's a little easter egg.
@@gamewithadam7235 Oh nice. That's pretty fun
Just found this vid cause HOTD is awesome. I would have found it amusing if you included the guest appearances of the characters such as the level in Sonic All Star Racing or how Agent G was Sega Heroes
With HOTD 5 one interesting POV I want to bring up is how much the game stands out in the arcade scene as a shooter.
I personally don't like mounted guns as much, so yes, HOTD SD was pretty fun.

i always joke with my brother using this line
All of the dialogue is quotable. Ever single line.
This is such a good video! Well done 😊
The game is just a pure gem. ❤😢
I just played the remake of the first fame and I like it. The soundtrack is altered because of copyright reasons but I like it a lot. I’m 28 and I was obsessed with beating this game as a kid.
There's a not horrible HD Switch remake. Playing it got me hunting for videos on HOTD, and that's why I'm here.
Maybe you'll stick around to hear my thoughts on the remake coming out some time in the next few days.
Thank you for being conscious of the flashing lights and trying to mitigate the discomfort your viewers may have had over it.
I'm happy this was useful. I've seen a lot of other videos that show gameplay but don't warn about the flashing. In hindsight I wish I would have modded it to remove the flashing altogether, but I don't know how I would do that.
