@@ZillennialRosa frankly it stil fine to watch chugga just beacuse currently he's in trouble doesnt mean his preivous work isall tainted info from them might be useful to any beginner
chuggaa was part of the reason why I became even more invested in Super Paper Mario and Xenoblade, my first and second fave games respectively. It is definitely a weird time to recommend him due to the allegations, but we have reached a point where everyone involved in said controversy got way more social and emotional punishment than they deserved.
@imboredthatyimhere it's still giving him money to watch his content and exposure to recommend his videos. No thanks. Not saying they're outright terrible or something, but it's different to say not to support him.
Being the first PM game I ever played, this retrospective really did the game justice in my opinion. While it can't stand against TTYD and 64 in terms of gameplay, Super's story and music keep it comfortably above the next 3 games in the series. PS: Good luck with reviewing SS, I apologize for the pain ahead in advance...
Ive already recorded footage of that playthrough. Fun fact: I had to play it twice because I wanted to do a playthrough on my 3DS for authenticity, but I needed to go through it again in Citra to record it. It's had plenty of time to marinate in my brain.
I’m just now watching this as a part of a TTYD-remake-announcement-inspired binge of Paper Mario content, and I love this video, this video series, and your delivery style. I also have a huge bias for this game. I played TTYD some years before this game, and after losing it I asked my family for a copy of the game for some holiday, and I got Super Paper Mario by mistake, but I ended up loving it and replaying it several times. I have always wished that the turn-based battle style of TTYD was retained along with the art style and set design, but I think that SPM was proof of concept that they didn’t have to make a TTYD copy to make another great Paper Mario game. I just wish the series didn’t fall apart after SPM.
This really takes me back to how Dimentio and the Mr. L subplot especially spawned so much angsty fanart and tribute videos, something about this game’s story made a lot of us younger fans go freaking feral. In fifth grade, I wrote a Super Smash Bros fanfic that clumsily inserted various plot elements from this, every once in a while I like to re-read it and have a good laugh about how bad it was.
Ah finally, a video long enough for a small TotK play session. But for real i think this video was absolutely worth the wait. SPM is my favorite of the series exactly for the story and overall character interaction being at it's peak here, even if the gameplay itself is flawed.
A 2-hour video of Super Paper Mario + an original song that's actually really good featuring a clever coming-out section = a banger video. I've been watching your paper Mario retrospectives and they're honestly fantastic.
Thank you so much! I put a lot of work into these videos, this one especially. I was nervous about the potential negative attention of get from coming out, but so far most people have been really nice. I appreciate that you enjoyed the song 😊
Super paper Mario is a great game I have a theory Dimentio actually won! He destroyed the worlds Chapters 1-8 the mushroom kingdom. Everything in paper Mario TTYD all of it And he created the “perfect” new worlds Sticker Star Color splash And origami king
Great idea for the next Paper Mario, just make the last 3 games an alternate timeline where Dimentio erased the characters that had personality and unique designs.
I'm watching through a lot of SPM retrospectives/analyses as prep for my own SPM video and just wanted to say this is almost certainly the best one on youtube. You did an incredible job here and the personal layers to the vid turn it into something truly special and unique. Great work :) My take on the game diverges pretty heavily from yours but you're such a sharp analyst and writer that I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts when it comes out (at the end of the month hopefully)!
I can't believe this video has so few views and comments! It's so well made! I really love SPM, probably more than any other Mario game I've ever played including Odyssey. It's just so silly, unique, and feels like a real adventure to me with all of the different & fleshed out worlds. It's probably in my top 10 games of all time.
If I'm slow to respond to comments, it's because I'm playing TOTK. I may make a quick video sharing my thoughts when I finish the game, assuming there's enough demand.
This is such a great video! SPM is my favorite of the series for many reasons, and I love how you explained all of its good aspects alongside the flawed. Also, congrats on finding your true self! Me alongside many other people will support you. And as a trans boy, I am very happy for you! The egg pun was super clever lmao. One more thing, your new avatar is very pretty! I can't wait to see what other videos you'll bring :]
I just realized in the bath that all super paper mario villains names are similar to them O Chunks he chunk Mimi mimics Nestalia gives people nostalgia? Count bleck wants the world black Demeneo deceives
I remember thinking for the longest time that letting the meter run out would get you a game over. I ended up making the game more tedious for myself then i needed to for basically no reason.
Oof, yeah, a single unit of health being removed feels rather inconsequential, so I just took the hits because I didn't want to bother with it most of the time.
I love this, for so many reasons. From the Vivian love to the dissection of the gameplay itself, it's not often I find such long videos that are so consistently entertaining. Also something tells me that Sinister Dude isn't ready for a magical girl transformation, you go girl!
Great video. Been watching this series from the start. This is the second Paper Mario I played, first being Color Splash. I enjoy replaying this game more than any other Paper Mario. I feel there’s no other game that plays like this one, and I wish it got a true successor the expand on its mechanics. Here are some other reasons as to why I like this game the most: Hub world: Flipside is the most well designed hub world since you have to explore it over the course of the game. In most Paper Mario games, the entire hub world can be explored early on. Nothing new happens or opens up later on other than the entrance to the next chapter. As a result, the hub world just feels like a regular level. Level design: I like how exploration is more streamlined in this game. Splitting chapters into levels makes it harder to get lost and reduces unnecessary backtracking because you’re not required to go back to completed levels/chapters. While traveling from Flipside to other chapters might feel disconnected, the chapters themselves don’t. Most levels do a great job at transitioning into the next one, you could simply add a door instead of a Star Block and it wouldn’t make much of a difference. The only Paper Mario game where I found exploring the areas more engaging is Origami King. Enemies/items: In Super Paper Mario, enemies no longer get to attack you every time you damage them. Instead, the amount of damage you take is dependent almost entirely on skill. To make up for that, Super Paper Mario replaces Healing Blocks/Inns from chapters with one-time use Mushrooms. As a result, items feel much more valuable in this game compared to previous games since there’s no cheap healing system. Taking damage feels more impactful since you can’t just do some minor backtracking and get fully healed up. The only times I used items in the first two games was a during a few late game bosses and the Pit of 100 trials. Characters: The NPCs are memorable not only by their designs but also their personality. Every NPC in the game has unique dialogue after every chapter. Whenever I replay the game, I choose a few NPCs and revisit them to see how they change throughout the game. It’s made more interesting with how the NPCs in Flopside have opposite personalities to Flipside. It’s also nice that this game gives a reason as to why some Mario enemies are good whiles others are evil. I always find that confusing in some other Paper Mario games. I look forward to your thoughts on Color Splash and Origami King!
This is very thorough and well thought out. You make some excellent points here. I could honestly talk about the game for several more hours, but I had to stop at some point lol. I do have a lot of thoughts and feelings on Color Splash and Origami King, so look forward to those videos whenever they drop.
Just found you as well, and just wanted to say hell yeah at coming out and embracing who you are! Through I’m realizing in retrospect that the egg very heavily foreshadowed that, and I just wanna say, very cheeky of you, I appreciate that.
I wasn't exactly trying to hide the fact that I'm trans, but I wanted the egg there for people who would pick up on its meaning to stick around and know what kind of place this channel is. I feel happy knowing I can be more open about it now that the egg is hatched.
Okey so i litteraly just started watching your channel, paper mario content will do that. But this was one of the most interesting ways i've ever seen someone come out to their audience. I feel very fortunate to have found you at this time. The work you put into these videos is extraordinary. You got my subscription!
I'm really happy to hear that! I was already planning on adding lore and original story stuff to my videos as a sort of framing device, and when I discovered more about myself, I figured I would have to address it, so this is how I did it. Thank you so much for watching, and I hope you have a great rest of your day/evening/night.
The music is pretty good. Also loved the world designs. I agree that the main battle system could have been revised to better fit the gameplay. The story is so good, Count Bleck is such a underrated villain.
I just wanted to share with y'all that this series of videos has inspired me to play through all the Paper Mario games and I am currently on Boo's mansion in the first game.
Yeah, I definitely wasn't trying to be subtle, though there were still some subscribers who were surprised by the reveal. I'm currently working on the Sticker Star video, and I'm excited to share what other fun ideas I have in mind with the lore.
just wanted to say when i first started watched this retrospective series i've been in a weird paper mario nostalgic funk and these have been awesome to watch so far! im excited to see what you have to say about the rest of it!!! and the last part of this video... like you blew me away idk what to even say LOL the song was epic, how you tied it all in to paper mario lore was epic, just the storyline throughout these videos so far has been amazing!! idk i wasnt expecting anything like that like i literally said "oh my god??" out load LMAO but congrats!!! im happy for you!!! glad to be a part of the community with you
Thank you! I keep going back and forth on whether or not the extra story is worth it, but comments like this one make me feel a lot better about that decision ^^
I get this game is no Thousand Year Door, but this is the first/only Paper Mario game I ever played. Just for that and it’s amazing story alone it’s automatically my favorite of the whole series. Sorry to disappoint everyone. I still love Thousand Year Door a lot though (I watched a let’s play of it)!
You're allowed to have SPM as your favorite. I even said in the video that I can totally understand any of the first 3 games being somebody's favorite. Each game has something unique and special about them. Don't ever let anyone make you feel guilty for loving what you love 😁
I've been wondering the same thing haha. I've been getting a fair bit of growth lately (especially after the TTYD Remake was announced) so hopefully things keep heading in that direction :)
Outing done right. Just found out about your channel these days as I'm binging a lot of Paper Mario retrospectives lately and I just love how you interweaved this personal topic into the casual video without having it feel misplaced. I hope you're still getting all the attention you deserve, just keeping up the good work. Greetings!
OK so I love how you pointed out the "need a helmet for outer space" but Mario has no issue as a professional swimming champion 😂 - its a series where you always need to suspend your disbelief. We took a blimp to glitzville, need a train later on but then can use pipes anywhere. No more thinking! Love your love for this series, its my favorite!😊
Wow, what a video all around, and what a way to finish it, too! Love the structure, despite the length nothing feels like fluff and love the lore you're integrating into this. And congrats on breaking that egg for good, 💝.
Hey! Been loving this retrospective on one of my favorite game series. You've done such an amazing job, and I've loved every moment of it. Also, congratulations on being true to yourself as well. It takes a lot of courage to come out even in the best of circumstances. As a fellow 1st and 4th letter (and 8th) gal, I wish you nothing but the best and I hope that you can find the you that you want to be and I hope you have the love and support that you deserve on this journey. I'm rooting for you!
I have such nostalgia for this game, the storyline just makes me ugly cry every time and well… yeah! It was also the first Mario game I played and now that I’ve played the original Paper Mario 64 I have grown to realize the flaws of this game and why it got backlash. It’s still one of my favorite games ever, but PM64 is definitely more fun gameplay wise. So exited for TTYDR!
eofhsgohg Me slowly coming to the realization of what the egg meant was so funny. Legit super happy for you! Your sona is super cute! Really loved the reveal, and having seen your reaction to the TTYD remake and seeing this sona, I'm shocked I didn't realize it sooner lol Congrats on hatching~ (I think? idk I'm not out irl yet so I haven't really made many egg jokes myself)
I'm sure the storyline pushes away a lot of people, but I'm glad that the people who like it are enjoying that aspect of these videos. It all started with me needing to come out and trying to figure out an elaborate way to do it and now my channel has lore lol. I love my little paper sona, and I'm excited to share what my new sona will look like. I wish you the best on your own personal journey too! Be safe out there :)
Honestly, I have no idea what I was expecting from the egg. Like literally no clue I did not even think about it. OMG I JUST REALIZED THAT THIS WAS KINDA FORE SHADOWED IN THE PREVIOUS VIDEOS
I'm glad you caught the foreshadowing. I wished I could have just spilled the beans from the get-go, but I figured those hints would have to suffice in the meantime.
one of the best long form videos ive watched on youtube, the algorithm needs to step it up, this is criminally underrated. i loved the hatching scene at the end, and was great foreshadowing in the very beginning. i called you lil bro in one of your previous videos, well i apologize as im only watching this series of videos now. Your retrospectives were very unique and i dont think ive seen a youtube video essay with such a detailed narrative. Youre such a dork, and its great. I subbed after i watched your first video, and im staying subbed.
Thank you haha, and sorry for the late reply. I've had a lot on my plate lately. I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) Slowly but surely I'm making progress towards finishing this saga.
I absolutely love how in depth your videos are, I love listening to these when doing chores. Even though it brings my headspace to replaying these games at the same time. 😂 Looking forward for the rest (even if the paper mario games coming up... aren't that good lol)
Thank you. I think the next three videos will focus a bit more on looking at the series as a whole, stepping back to dissect the direction the series took starting with Sticker Star. We kind of all know why Sticker Star is bad, so I imagine that will be a shorter video when I get to it.
Super paper Mario was one if my first mario games after Mario kart Wii i was actually in a shockingly similar state since i first got the game when i was little kid in 2011 (yes 4 hears after it came out i often end up getting my hands on games so time after they release)
Huh. i found you initially through your House of the Dead series video -- didn't expect to come back to your channel later to learn about your transition here. A lot can change in two years, huh? 💜
Definitely! I was kind of worried after coming out that a lot of my subscribers who initially found me through my House of the Dead video would unsubscribe in droves, but that didn't really happen. I did lose a couple dozen subs, but that wasn't anything I couldn't easily recover from. Either way, I'm glad my videos are being discovered by the right people now!
That ending reveal was so adorable. I hope you can truly be yourself and that you can be proud of that!! /even if its been a year already:p/ This video was lovely and so well made i love it
Your new avatar is so adorable, and I’m very happy for you to be comfortable in your own skin. All the best for you in the future. I enjoyed the art for the avatar from the first three videos, as I mentioned in 64, but this is like… it’s just so cute. As for Super, the story is great, I forgot how good the music is, and I have fun with the gameplay even if I can’t say much high praise beyond that. Dumb side note, I like how in the intro, the Dark Prognosticus outline looks like a Wii. It just makes me chuckle.
Thank you. It seems small but these positive comments in response to my coming out do genuinely mean a lot to me! PS. I hadn't noticed that it looks like a Wii, but now that you mention it, I can't unsee it!
The actual secret sauce to the Paper Mario games, in my opinion, is the badge system. I used to think it was the turn based system, then later decided it was the partners, but I've settled on the extremely flexible level up system that is BP. That is what makes the games replayable, and what makes the combat in a relatively simple RPG series engaging. If you win a fight easily in PM64 or TTYD it's because you came up with a good build to do so. I really wish they could have implemented a badge system into this game, and then increased the difficulty and complexity of combat to compensate for your increased options. Thinking about HOW they would implement special badge attacks makes me think this game's fatal flaw miiiight actually just be the Wii Remote. Like, they had literally 3 buttons to work with. What would they have you press to trigger a Hammer Throw special attack or something similar? They'd make you waggle the Wii Remote around and it would be terrible. All that said the amount of options you DO have considering the limited control options is impressive. Unfortunately Carrie + Bowser kinda makes all the other options irrelevant, as you said. The game is still fantastic and I'd rather have a Super Paper Mario 2 than a Sticker Star 4, I'll say. (Though obviously a proper TTYD sequel would be better.) EDIT: Literally posted this comment 3 seconds before the part in the video where you talk about the Wii Remote
That's a good point. The badge system went a long way towards giving players choice during combat, and choice is something that is lacking in Super Paper Mario. The Wii Remote was definitely a hindering factor in available options, which ultimately feeds into that removal of player choice and decision making.
You've got a sub from me, by the way! Loved this series of videos and I'm very much looking forward to more! Sticker Star in particular seems like a rough topic to cover, but I trust you can pull it off! I'm totally fine with the wait :)
@@noisepollution4473 I'm in the process of working on the Sticker Star video right now actually. My goal is to get it out some time next week. Here's hoping I can manage lol.
while I don't care much about the underlying stories between retrospective, I respect you trying to stand out. I'd say making reviews of this length over these games is a solid enough of a reason for people like me to watch your videos, but also I'm not gonna complain about a reason to tab back out to the video, rewind, and better understand what you're talking about even if others might. Super Paper Mario, despite being the game I have the least personal connection to because I only ever played it in college, is still my favorite in terms of story and I appreciate the amount of effort you put into one of my favorite games of all time
also don't take that as a discouragement for your retrospective series because I still FULLY intend to watch all of them and listen to you share all of our pain with Sticker Star. For every game I played in my childhood, it takes the cake as my least favorite that I've ever touched, but I'm still looking forward to your video on it and hearing another person lament on their existence briefly because of the single worst game in this otherwise phenomenal franchise (Color Splash is HILARIOUS and Origami King is severely underrated)
also, despite what I said about not liking the story aspect as much here, I still appreciate you trying something to make you stand out and I want to let you know that, even if small, that there is a population of people who appreciate your effort and I am among them. So, even if I don't care that much, I still find it neat and it makes me put more watch time into the video. Maybe I'm just weird tho there
Yeah, I get that it's not for everyone, but it's the vision I've had for these videos for a long time. I think going forward, I'm going to try and strike a better balance, and not emphasize the original story stuff as much, but have it in the background and sometimes at the end of videos.
Super Paper Mario was my first experience with the Paper Mario series. My unfortunate second experience was with Sticker Star... That being said, the post game mostly consists of the Sammer Kingdom. Everything else can be accessed literally as soon as you unlock the neccessary Pixls/party members. Although for the treasure maps you'll want to wait until post game to clear them all considering each map takes you all the way through both Flipside and Flopside as well as through each chapter (Minus chapter 6 for obvious reasons) and having to backtrack to each chapter segment individually could start to feel tedious and annoying. Flipside's Pit of 100 Trials is able to be challenged immediately after unlocking Boomer. And considering Boomer is unlocked in 2-1 right near the end, that means you could effectively dip out of Chapter 2 before you've even beaten 2-1. Flopside's Pit is accessible immediately after getting to Flopside but only if you beat Flipside's Pit first. Although it requires two run-throughs but grants a *very* useful upgrade to your flip gauge. And the side quest for Piccolo is doable midway through Chapter 5 which is an odd case of "Second verse, same as the first" but upon completing the side quest Piccolo grants you the ability to cure yourself of any Cursya effects (minus being flipped out) at any time and does some interesting changes to the sounds the playable characters make. Also, fun fact about the Trial Stew. Because they did away with FP and Star Power for this game, the Trial Stew instead acts like an EXP granting item. Still a pain to make (requiring a Couple's Cake and Poison/Ghost Shroom), but I guess it's kinda worth it considering all the points you'd get at higher HP values. Also forgot to mention the Cooking Disks. Even though they aren't actually necessary (especially considering you can just look up each recipe), they're still important for completion. Also fun fact related to the Cooking Disks, there exists an unused Pink Cooking Disk in the game's code that is speculated to be what was needed to use the Dining Specializer originally considering by default it already has page one. Although another possibility is they were going to add more recipes but either realized they already had enough or couldn't make specific recipes work.
I definitely feel that too in some ways. The story in general was pretty mind-blowing to my younger self and helped me see what kind of power video game stories could have.
Disagree completely on the 3D. The 3D is so much fun and there's plenty of interesting uses of it such as collecting more coins. Fracktail was the first world's boss, he didnt need to he super complex or difficult. The platforming definitely needs some tightening, I admit that. But I still think it's great as an action platformer. Yes, it's a bit too easy at times, but you can just... NOT use Bowser and Carrie? It's not that big of a handicap. The story is definitely my favorite part. It's the game'd strongest aspect. Overall a great video, but I disagree with a lot of the "issues" you mentioned. Some of them I think are true like some bits of backtracking dragging and the Pixls not getting much character sadly. It's not a perfect game, but I still think it's amazing and it's strengths are far greater than it's flaws.
I honestly think collecting more coins in 3D is tedious and annoying, and that mostly comes down to how annoying it is to traverse in 3D space using a D-Pad and with the game's fixed camera. I don't mind Fracktail being an easy boss, but my complaint was that beyond Fracktail, the 3D mechanic isn't required for bosses. Fracktail felt like a tutorial for a concept that really didn't get fleshed out as the game progressed. I would urge you to play a game like Fez if you haven't already, as I think that game does a much better job utilizing a similar concept to Super Paper Mario. Also, sure, I could just NOT use Bowser and Carrie, but the option is still there and is always a constant temptation. The thing is, even without Bowser and Carrie, the game is really easy. In fact, for this playthrough, I only used Bowser and Carrie some of the time. I actually beat the final boss with Peach.
This video was a masterpiece, and I'm so glad my favourite Paper Mario game got the love it deseves (and the equally-deserved criticism), and also, even though I'm seeing this moment in retrospect, congratulations on coming out, and I sincerely hope nothing but the best for you! Excited to see the rest of the series, when it eventually comes. I've still got the Sticker Star video to watch~
Thank you so much (and apologies for my delayed responses to comments). I'm happy that my video on your favorite game was able to live up to the quality you hoped for and expected.
OK bro, I've just discovered your channel today, and I'm devouring your Paper Mario videos. You are so criative and brave. I hope your channel becomes more popular, because the amount of time and care you put in these videos is something you don't see on YT that much.
This game is my favorite Paper Mario!! One of the reasons being I'm not a fan of the normal RPG type games. Not to mention it had the most AMAZING story, fleshed out characters with lots of personality, and great music! Like you said I was on the verge of tears for many parts of the game!! Especially the ending. This game needs a sequel!
AAA THE MOMENT YOU REPLIED TO MY COMMENT ON THE LAST VIDEO AND WHEN I SAW ALL THE EGG STUFF IN THIS ONE I KNEW YOU'RE GONNA COME OUT I'm so happy and proud of you!!! I'm just, really happy to see other trans people come out, as a trans person myself!! Also this whole video? AMAZING- I just have no words because not only I'm a sucker for videos that have some. lore stuff going on BUT ALSO THIS IS THE COOLEST WAY I EVER SAW ANYONE COME OUT?? I'm just, yeah, so happy for you!
Thank you so much! I knew it would be pretty obvious to some, but it still feels so good to get it off my chest. I was worried I might be going overboard, but I'm happy this video resonated with so many people. All the comments so far have been very kind. I'm excited to continue making videos as my true self. Thank you for the kind words and support ❤️🏳️🌈
As far as I know they didn't reuse that trick. Chapter 2's music in PMOK is similar, but the Sammer Kingdom theme is still unique to Super Paper Mario.
I'm late to the party, completely missed the disconnect between the avatar and channel icon, but I'm proud I immediately called the egg in the last PM video being the classic trans egg
Exactly which group of people did Nintendo poll, of whom supposedly only 1% cared about the story, and made them do Sticker Star's story as bland as microwaved frozen corn? I would kill for a game that had an improved style of TTYD's gameplay with SPM's emotional depth.
Yeah, I don't think Club Nintendo surveys are the best indicator of how players actually feel, since most would speed through the surveys to get the points.
First of all I'll allow myself to both congratulate and thank you for sharing your feelings towards yourself to us, your audience, even if we're like complete outsiders to you. I really appreciate the level of trust you're showing us despite that😄I really hope you can really find the way to feel as happy and proud as you can be for the rest of your journey! Nonetheless, please don't take my following remark as a dismissal of your announcement, but as the wise Tyranitar from the "Pseudopapus" once said: "Wow, un hada... para Hydrei... nadie lo vió venir" (I won't translate it tho, let it be more like an inside joke😅). I really admire your work within these retrospective series and I was kind of dissappointed when you "dropped the bomb" so early into your narrative, but I'm sure the next half of the history would be as engaging as the one covered so far! Please take care of you and that Vivian's hat and best regards! P.S.: Have you considered becoming a V-tuber like Plague Von Karma?
It's true that my original intention was to save this announcement for the end, but I think the narrative works out much better this way. The idea is that my own personal story runs parallel with the reputation of the Paper Mario series. The next 3 games are very different, and the videos about these games will also feel different. Those games are divisive because they're unlike the first 3 games. The series has a new identity, just like I do now. I plan on talking a lot more about behind the scenes development history and fan reception to these games. I think it'll be pretty great. I haven't considered becoming a V-Tuber or even much of a streamer. I just don't feel like I'm good at being entertaining for the duration of a stream. That being said, I have done some experiments with streaming, and might continue to do so in the future, perhaps whenever the next Nintendo Direct happens. I'd probably be a PNGTuber or Toontuber, since I already have assets ready to go that could theoretically work for that. I'm also training my voice, so we'll see where we're at in the future lol.
@@ZillennialRosa That's awesome! Now I'm even more excited about the second half of this series. Thanks for taking the time to write a reply and hope to keep enjoying whatever you fancy to craft and tell us! Best regards 😃
Won't lie, I got "spoiled" by searching through your video tab to get to the first part of the retrospective, but when it got to the part about using the "egg" as a vessel, I was like "Ohhhhh, so she's an egg. I get it now." Kind of a funny way to bridge things, I won't lie. Congratulations on finding yourself.
So I found you through these Paper Mario videos and just watched all 3 of them, and holy shit this has to be the best "coming out" I've ever seen on RUclips. I'm also trans, but I never really put much emphasis on it on my channel when I came out. As for the game, SPM is my favorite in the series and I fully agree with everything you said about the story, and somewhat about the gameplay but it personally never bothered me enough to offset the profound impact the story and characters had on me. Anyways I wish you luck on your transition, if anyone tries to be nasty or malicious about it, I'd suggest immediately banning them. I recently had the hallowing experience of realizing my audience has a lot of bigots when my "fuck bigotry" community posts drew more anger than support. Nobody needs that shit. Also, looking forward to the rest of the series, I absolutely agree that "Paper Mario" is essentially two series now, and while modern PM has its moments, what I want more than anything else is a fourth entry in the original Paper Mario series.
Thank you for watching all of my currently available Paper Mario videos, I'm glad you found me! It always makes me happy to hear from other trans people finding my videos. I've been incredibly fortunate to have the response to my coming out be generally positive. I think it helps that I've been dropping hints and been making it clear that I'm pro-trans, even before coming out myself. I was anticipating a lot worse, but I appreciate that the trash (bigots) took itself out. The few weird comments I've gotten have been really amusing tbh. I'm sorry that the response to you spitting facts was so negative, but hopefully things are better on that front now. I wish you and your community the best, and know that I stand in solidarity with you ^^ After my next video (which should hopefully be out in the next few days) I'm going to get to work on the Sticker Star, and I'm for sure excited and ready to continue talking about the Paper Mario series. I definitely have some opinions on the next 3 games. I've already got the footage recorded for the SS video, and it won't be as long as the other videos, so it shouldn't take me too long to make.
Personally highly recommend KoopaKungFu and Lucahjin’s blind play throughs of this game
Thank you! I would advise others to do the same and not to watch the LP that was recommended in this video originally
have not heard of koopakungfu in a while god damn

Thank you! Well, hopefully now the TTYD Switch version now makes the long wait for Paper Mario's return to glory worth it.
To be fair, for a lot of us, this was the first time experiencing a massive story with twists and turns like this
Subspace Emissary has a surprising amount in common with SPM!
Now that you mention it, fair@@autobotstarscream765
Ah finally, a video long enough for a small TotK play session.
But for real i think this video was absolutely worth the wait.
SPM is my favorite of the series exactly for the story and overall character interaction being at it's peak here, even if the gameplay itself is flawed.
I'm happy it was able to deliver after the long wait. Now I take a break to play nonstop TOTK. I hope you're having fun with the game as well :)
@@ZillennialRosa that hatching was adorable, good on you, and that song was an absolute banger.
15:23 holy geometry dash spotted
Super paper Mario is a great game
I have a theory Dimentio actually won!
He destroyed the worlds
Chapters 1-8 the mushroom kingdom. Everything in paper Mario TTYD all of it
And he created the “perfect” new worlds
Sticker Star
Color splash
And origami king
Great idea for the next Paper Mario, just make the last 3 games an alternate timeline where Dimentio erased the characters that had personality and unique designs.
I'm watching through a lot of SPM retrospectives/analyses as prep for my own SPM video and just wanted to say this is almost certainly the best one on youtube. You did an incredible job here and the personal layers to the vid turn it into something truly special and unique. Great work :)
My take on the game diverges pretty heavily from yours but you're such a sharp analyst and writer that I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts when it comes out (at the end of the month hopefully)!
Thank you so much! It's an honor that you think so highly of this video. I'm definitely excited for you to make your video. Wishing you the best!
I've definitely never played another game quite like it.
Thank you so much! Every bit of support means a lot to me. I'm happy to have you here.
I just realized in the bath that all super paper mario villains names are similar to them
O Chunks he chunk
Mimi mimics
Nestalia gives people nostalgia?
Count bleck wants the world black
Demeneo deceives
The names are a lot more fitting than I realized.
The little musical number was so neat! Congrats on coming out, what a fun way to do it!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you liked it
I remember thinking for the longest time that letting the meter run out would get you a game over. I ended up making the game more tedious for myself then i needed to for basically no reason.
Oof, yeah, a single unit of health being removed feels rather inconsequential, so I just took the hits because I didn't want to bother with it most of the time.
This was amazing!! Thank you again for allowing me to be a part of it and bringing CC to life!
Thank you for lending your voice to CC!
I love this, for so many reasons. From the Vivian love to the dissection of the gameplay itself, it's not often I find such long videos that are so consistently entertaining.
Also something tells me that Sinister Dude isn't ready for a magical girl transformation, you go girl!
Thank you! I appreciate that my elaborate coming out combined with an original story is being enjoyed.
Great video. Been watching this series from the start. This is the second Paper Mario I played, first being Color Splash. I enjoy replaying this game more than any other Paper Mario. I feel there’s no other game that plays like this one, and I wish it got a true successor the expand on its mechanics. Here are some other reasons as to why I like this game the most:
Hub world: Flipside is the most well designed hub world since you have to explore it over the course of the game.
The whole thing with the Samurai Kingdom in chapter 6 getting destroyed and being reduced to nothing but a white void sure is some creepypasta shit!
Truly insane that they put that in an official Mario game
Okey so i litteraly just started watching your channel, paper mario content will do that. But this was one of the most interesting ways i've ever seen someone come out to their audience. I feel very fortunate to have found you at this time. The work you put into these videos is extraordinary. You got my subscription!
I'm really happy to hear that! I was already planning on adding lore and original story stuff to my videos as a sort of framing device, and when I discovered more about myself, I figured I would have to address it, so this is how I did it. Thank you so much for watching, and I hope you have a great rest of your day/evening/night.
Same, this is one of the best Super Paper Mario videos I've watched
@@ZillennialRosaThank you for the content
Came for the retrospective
Stayed for the lore
I am not crying over a paper Mario review! I am not!
The music is pretty good. Also loved the world designs. I agree that the main battle system could have been revised to better fit the gameplay. The story is so good, Count Bleck is such a underrated villain.
Count Bleck is truly unlike any villain we've ever seen in the series.
I just wanted to share with y'all that this series of videos has inspired me to play through all the Paper Mario games and I am currently on Boo's mansion in the first game.
I hope your journey has continued to be fun so far!
I cant say it was a subtle reveal with the phrasing and the metaphors, but I will be subscribing and i hope you see success from here on out!
My god, you are KILLING IT with the paper Mario videos. I cannot wait to watch this after work. I absolutely love your video essays
Much appreciated. Happy to know the many hours of work on these videos mean people are enjoying them.
I’m so happy to see this game getting coverage! Love this game and love this video series!
Happy to hear you're enjoying these videos!
Just got this recommended and decided to watch the entire series from the start, this has been really awesome and I'm so happy for you ^^
Thank you! :)
How the hell do you not have way more subs?? This video was made so magnificently. Hope to see more like this.
Greetings!
Thank you. I feel like this aspect definitely helps my particular series stand out from the rest haha.
Great video I'll be sure to keep an eye out for chapter 4.
I'm planning a release in late August. Until then, I just put out a Tears of the Kingdom video, and I've got a couple other smaller videos on the way.
not me watching this a second time after going back to watch the first two videos
Excellent timing since I'm currently working on the Sticker Star video.
Lol. What's funny is that there's a pool of water you can swim in right next to the place where you get the space helmet.
Wow, what a video all around, and what a way to finish it, too! Love the structure, despite the length nothing feels like fluff and love the lore you're integrating into this. And congrats on breaking that egg for good, 💝.
Thank you kindly. Your support is always appreciated
Thank you so much! I'm really happy this series is reaching the right people.
The effort you put into this. So glad I found your channel today 😭😭
Thank you! I'm glad you discovered this channel too!
Someone should Photoshop Movie Luigi to look like Mr. L.
I'm sure it has to have been done already, I would assume at least.
@@ZillennialRosa I did it after I said that. More poorly edited, but it gets the idea across.
I think it's beautiful that each game is strong for different reasons. It makes them all worth playing.
eofhsgohg Me slowly coming to the realization of what the egg meant was so funny. Legit super happy for you! Your sona is super cute!
Really loved the reveal, and having seen your reaction to the TTYD remake and seeing this sona, I'm shocked I didn't realize it sooner lol
Congrats on hatching~ (I think? idk I'm not out irl yet so I haven't really made many egg jokes myself)
I just happened upon this channel and I'm already in love 😭 so proud of you becoming your true self
Thank you! I'm happy you found us. I saw that you joined the Discord ^^ Welcome to the community!
I have a feeling that Toby Fox has played SPM before 😉
Oh, definitely!
one of the best long form videos ive watched on youtube, the algorithm needs to step it up, this is criminally underrated. i loved the hatching scene at the end, and was great foreshadowing in the very beginning. i called you lil bro in one of your previous videos, well i apologize as im only watching this series of videos now.
One of my favorite games of all time. The characters have stuck with me even years afterwards. Thank you for this retrospective!
Thank you for watching!
About having a run button, you should've mentioned that there IS a run button but it's locked behind an optional pixl
An optional pick that you can't realistically get until very late in the game.
@@ZillennialRosa. Yeah, it does make it worse because it's actually there but only available in late game
The editing on this is spectacular!! Love this content
Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear that.
Sammer's Kingdom is one of my favorite game OSTs of all time, you're so real for shouting it out and giving it the respect it deserves 😌
It just hits different! Happy to share it with the masses.
Scott The Woz being Francis is a cursed idea.
I was binging a lot of Scott the Woz when I made this so I couldn't NOT make the connection
Wow what an incredible way to tie discussing these games to your personal life. Great video (and series) overall!
Thank you!
Super paper Mario was one if my first mario games after Mario kart Wii i was actually in a shockingly similar state since i first got the game when i was little kid in 2011 (yes 4 hears after it came out i often end up getting my hands on games so time after they release)
I mean, I've also been quite late to the part for a lot of popular games myself.
Huh. i found you initially through your House of the Dead series video -- didn't expect to come back to your channel later to learn about your transition here.
/even if its been a year already:p/
This video was lovely and so well made i love it
I just discovered your channel and have been going through the paper mario videos, and just wanted to say congratulations! ❤🏳️⚧️
41:52 jj: the good place i still haven't watch that show Tiago: what are you talking about?
(Though obviously a proper TTYD sequel would be better.)
EDIT: Literally posted this comment 3 seconds before the part in the video where you talk about the Wii Remote
I'm totally fine with the wait :)

while I don't care much about the underlying stories between retrospective, I respect you trying to stand out.
I think going forward, I'm going to try and strike a better balance, and not emphasize the original story stuff as much, but have it in the background and sometimes at the end of videos.
this game's soundtrack is truly amazing
I couldn't fit all of my favorite songs in the music section. Half the video could just be the soundtrack if I really wanted it to be.
New videos are always exciting to see!
20:04 What a sneaky cut. I had to rewatch to make sure you didn't get owned by the Back Cursya.
Nah, I didn't. Barry was there to keep me safe.
Cooking items is a lot of fun and definitely something I want to return to the series.
I can understand you slowly responding to comments because of Totk and I can’t complain because totk I a masterpiece.
It's such a masterpiece that my next video is going to be about it lol
SPM's story hits me very hard, in no small part because a lot of aspects of it mirror my own life in weird ways.
I definitely feel that too in some ways. The story in general was pretty mind-blowing to my younger self and helped me see what kind of power video game stories could have.
1:00:19 oh the worlds revoling clever

This is the most elaborate coming out I have ever seen, good on ya
Thank you! I'm glad everyone thinks so, instead of calling me cringe or something lol

OK bro, I've just discovered your channel today, and I'm devouring your Paper Mario videos. You are so criative and brave. I hope your channel becomes more popular, because the amount of time and care you put in these videos is something you don't see on YT that much.
did you post this before reaching the end of the video, or are you just an idiot?
This game is my favorite Paper Mario!! One of the reasons being I'm not a fan of the normal RPG type games. Not to mention it had the most AMAZING story, fleshed out characters with lots of personality, and great music! Like you said I was on the verge of tears for many parts of the game!! Especially the ending. This game needs a sequel!
Totally fair. If you don't like turn-based combat, then Super Paper Mario is the Paper Mario for you.
I love this game so much
Dimentio plays Super Paper Mario confirmed
Bro why was this lowkey one of the best games on the wii
AAA THE MOMENT YOU REPLIED TO MY COMMENT ON THE LAST VIDEO AND WHEN I SAW ALL THE EGG STUFF IN THIS ONE I KNEW YOU'RE GONNA COME OUT
I'm so happy and proud of you!!!
Took a bit to think about it, but the egg hatching was very clever. Congrats on your transition!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it :)
You said the background music of ch 6 slaps well it slaps so hard that Nintendo reused it in origami king
As far as I know they didn't reuse that trick. Chapter 2's music in PMOK is similar, but the Sammer Kingdom theme is still unique to Super Paper Mario.

1. I agree
2. Francis is straight
2. I don't know if that was ever confirmed anywhere
Baller production values. 👌
I do my best. Thank you for the kind comment 💜
I'm late to the party, completely missed the disconnect between the avatar and channel icon, but I'm proud I immediately called the egg in the last PM video being the classic trans egg
I guess Vivian's hat isn't the only thing of hers that she gave to you
Yeah, she's pretty cool!
15:22 I'll have you know I was once a middle schooler too y'know! I spent more time on Coolmathgames than I'd like to admit much like all of us!
The next era starts off weak with Sticker Star (Though I Think It’s An Okay Game) but then gets great when Origami King comes along.
Creator that I only just found comes out as trans? Awesome, I love it. Happy for you! Looking forward to the rest of the videos!!
Happy to be your local trans RUclipsr. Thank you, and I look forward to making more videos!
Won't lie, I got "spoiled" by searching through your video tab to get to the first part of the retrospective, but when it got to the part about using the "egg" as a vessel, I was like "Ohhhhh, so she's an egg. I get it now."
Kind of a funny way to bridge things, I won't lie. Congratulations on finding yourself.
Thank you! Sorry about all the late replies lately. It's been a chaotic couple of months for me.
I wish you and your community the best, and know that I stand in solidarity with you ^^
After my next video (which should hopefully be out in the next few days) I'm going to get to work on the Sticker Star, and I'm for sure excited and ready to continue talking about the Paper Mario series. I definitely have some opinions on the next 3 games. I've already got the footage recorded for the SS video, and it won't be as long as the other videos, so it shouldn't take me too long to make.
I'm sad we never got an spm 2
With all the Mario RPG revivals, it's actually a possibility at this point
this is the part with the car
