And here it is finally. Been a long time coming, and I thank you all for your patience. There's a couple important things that I mention at the end of this video but will tell you here. There will likely not be a video on the TTYD remake this year, I won't know how I want to cover it until I've played it, and I have other plans that are a higher priority right now. I will however stream my first playthrough of it, not sure if I'll stream it day 1, but pretty close after it's release. It also won't just be on Sundays, just whenever is most convenient. Keep an eye on my community tab for updates on that. Also this isn't the end of the Paper Mario Marathon, I still have more beyond Origami King besides the TTYD remake. But while I had said before that I would focus on finishing this marathon with no distractions, and that did include the post Origami King stuff, I have to go back on that as there is a very important video I want to make for the end of this year, and it has a specific deadline. So sorry that it will take awhile to finish this up, but at least Origami King is done. There also won't likely be another video in between this and the end of the year video, unless I get that one done far enough in advance that I can squeeze out a smaller video, but don't count on that.
Oh shit I just came up with some concepts for that Hypothetical Remake A while Ago I'm going to get right on it. Is it alright if you take some of my concepts to help or do have it all planned out. if not I can gmail to you as a template.
Oh and since your interested I have to mention that one of the ideas I got is that the Legion of Stationery are getting redesigns to make them fit better with the Origami theme. Namely they are all Origami animals that incorporate their stationary into their designs I got the designs for four of them. Colored Pencils is a Porcupine a crested one to be specific with the pencils being his spikes no case what so ever, Hole Punch is a Hippo with the hole punch being his head, having origami teeth and drawn on eyes. Tape is a Snail with the dispenser being the shell, and Scissors is a Praying Mantis with the Scissor blades replacing his claws I haven't come up with one for Rubber Band yet I know it's something that can stretch really well I'm thinking of either a Sea star or an Orangutan what do you think? Oh and Stapler is a giant origami wolf and he has a personality being Olly's right fold man. I also wanna better tie them into the story and give a little more personality. Oh and Olly is now omnicidal against all non origami life to make him feel much more like a threat.
The archeologist asking an unfrozen ancient how he likes his coffee is a very funny joke on its face, but if a modern archaeologist had the chance to talk to, say, a ancient Roman citizen, questions about food probably would be up there on the list of things to talk about.
Bit of a dark theory, but I feel like Olivia didn't word her wish more carefully because she didn't want to survive. She loved her brother, and felt incredible pain when he died. All throughout the game, she begs and pleads with Olly to stop. She obviously doesn't want him to die. So when he does, Olivia might not have felt like she had a reason to continue living. She failed. That's why, when it came time to make the wish to restore everything, she _did_ word it carefully. She worded it in such a way that she wouldn't have to feel any more pain.
Cool theory, but even if that was the case, Olivia still could have worded the wish diferently in a manner that everything, including olly, would go back to normal, giving olly a second chance at redemption. Still cool theory tho.
@@AndreSantos-xv9oh cointering this, she was probably thinking in the moment. When you're being piloted by grief you tend to focus on the then and now, not the possible future.
In my head the reason Bobby died was because he was a factory made Bob omb like the ones in Bowsers' army in the originals and Bombette and Bobery are organic bob ombs which can survive exploding.
It's more that Bombette and Boberry are the exceptions and not the standard for Bobomb ! Even in PM1 and 2, you have bobomb that quite litteraly explode and suicide on you This is why I never understand the gripe that peoples had with it.
@@seasonembrace3624 Well, the bob bomb enemies in Pm1 in the Koopa fortress do actually die when they explode. It doesn't change anyway that this argument is stupid in my opinon and shouldn't exist in a first place xD
Don't forget the bob ombs in the snow town in ttyd. They blow up firing the cannon and live. They are very inconsistent with bob ombs currently, which irks me a lot. Takes some points off bobby's sacrifice for me
Personally, i kinda prefer the new approach to bob ombs. Them coming back with every explosion they do is alright, but personally, its a bit more interesting with them only having one chance to explode before they die. It makes them a bit more likeable in the sence that they REALLY have to use every single moment in their short lives while they last. Just my opinion tho:)
Who ever composes the sound tracks for paper mario literally have not missed once which is crazy since they have the highest quality control in the series
"They added an extra zero to your wallet" No they actually added 2 extra zeroes. The coin cap of this game is 999 999. Yes, Mario can become just one coin short of being a millionare in this game. The Mushroom Kingdom's infaltion is insane, and I'm surprised that there isn't a NPC complaining how you only had to play 2 coins for a mushroom 20 years ago.
2:34:34 Tape is my favorite of the Legion Of Stationary. He's the only one to hide everything in one single chest and calls you out when you open it revealing everything. I love how he says that's his way of keeping everything clean. It's pretty funny. I also love his Boston styled personality and his boss theme.
Gotta say, I have huge respect for you for not trashing the League of Stationary just because they’re real world objects. Sure, they’re not all perfect but I absolutely loved them on my first playthrough of Origami King so much so that they’re my second/third favourite group of Paper Mario villains (need to play the TTYD remake before I can fully decide where I place them)
25:07, the thing about Bowser being a parent to Junior, this kind of narration is absent in the Japanese Version, meaning that Bowser being a good father is something exclusive to the Western side, or at least, a NoA treehouse translation thing. I can't read Japanese, but I used the Chinese version's dialogue for references, (traditional Chinese btw), aside from that one controversy about Toad's line of "Toads have Human rights. Toad have freedom rights." being heavily censored and completely erased so the game can be sold in China due to CCT and their control of media. Ignoring that one controversy, everything else in the game is faithfully 1:1 translation from Japanese to Chinese. In the Japanese version, during Olivia's last bench interaction moment, when she's worried about putting Mario and everyone in danger by facing her brother, Bowser just walks up to Olivia's face, and told her that, I quote: "In peril? Who do you think I am? I am Bowser! Even crying babies would go silent upon seeing me! " (This is the part where Olivia would go on a 3-second silent before replying: "Wow. That really puts it into perspective." in the English version) And I shit you not, this is Olivia's reply in Japanese version: "Wow you're right. Bowser's face is so scary. I unconsciously calmed down." There's no development of Bowser and Junior's father-and-son relationship in the Japanese version, Bowser doesn't even express the same amount of concern the ENG version had during the Volcano chase scene. After watching Kamek and Jr being run over by the macho Goomba, He only said: "Although I worried about them, but now we can only believe that they'll follow up later. The indomitable Koopa Corps won't be defeated that easily." In the Japanese version, Bowser sees Junior more as a soldier under his command than a son. I fear that the narration of Bowser's character in the Japanese scriptwriting is still stuck in the "Haha, he's the goofy big bad guy that tried too hard and keeps failing at being evil that it's funny." trope. Or, the Japanese overall treat the world as the yahoo wahoo, funny going energy, any concern and worry is gone as you flip to the next page of the story; while the English version isn't shy to sip in some very short but mature moment that leaves an impression. This is all very disappointing for me when I first realized the English version's dialogue is written so much better than the Japanese.
@@sahaprocks7751 a rare case indeed, consider how the IP control over Paper Mario tried to keep characterization as bland and general. I imagine the NoA translator team did their best in their ability and legal capability to add some more flavor to the game. Although one can argue the English scripting is an unfaithful translation and a disrespectful act to the original Japanese dialogue writer, but given the context of this series's drastic restriction on creativity, limitation. I'm glad what the English fanbase ended up receiving. As this is a better outcome in my opinion. Given the troubling history and the toxicity of the fanbase over how the characterization of PM should be, I can imagine another Twitter outcry had we got a faithful translation of the Japanese script. Cauz I can see people calling the Japanese script a slander on Bowser's character.
I enjoy the idea that natural bob-bombs can survive their own explosions, but mass-produced ones can't. It's a sad thought, but it's the most reasonable that keeps the lore of the first two games intact.
1:02:55 About you criticizing the ending, I have this idea how to make it better. What if 1000 crane wish, costed the one making the wish their life. Then Olly's hating Toad's thing would have a bit more depth, like he hates them so much, he is ready to die just so they wouldn't exist. And Olivia's motivation for making the wish, would be mainly to save Peach from being stuck as a part of a castle forever.
It is implied that Olly used the fold of life technique to bring the Legion of Stationary to life, he just gave sentience to the origami craftsman’s supplies, they are implied to be under Olly’s control in a similar way to the other folded soldiers.
Maybe he eather used the ritual that made them alive and could alter it to create these objects. I see it how you alter a skill,, technique or magic to do a very specialized thing.
@@MyBTS91Yeah, from the statues and the fact that their elemental attacks were like real Water, Fire, and etc, I think the implication is that they weren't made of Paper in the first place
The Handaconda actually telegraphs which it will pick at the start of your turn, however it changes the longer you take, so you have to pay attention and memorize what it shows before it has the chance to change it. For example it may show scissors for a few seconds then switch to showing rock, this is to throw you off and think it will actually play rock rather than scissors.
@@TheRedGuy The thing I liked about it was it felt super risk vs reward. the closer you are to the boss, the more damage is done. and i LOVE that idea. wanna try for more damage but HP not doing good? stick to the outer ring.
I think bobby being the first partner works well to be honest. Coming off the first 3 games, you'd expect him to be permament, making his sacrifice a lot more impactful. It also does set a precedence that partners are temporary. If he was the 3rd partner it wouldn't be as impactful since you would already expect him to leave your party at the end I feel.
I think that a way to elevate him is if he had stayed with Mario and Olivia until Shangri Spa, with the boulder sequence happening in Bowser’s Castle and there being various points in the story before they get to Shangri Spa where he’d make an impact on their lives before reaching that part. Like he convinces the Tin Can trio to help Mario like he helped them, he invites the three cosplayers at Shogun Studios to join them, he encourages Professor Toad to face his fear of fire, he ends up warming up to Olivia calling him “Bobby”. Little things to heighten the impact that his death would have on the audience.
It also helps he’s the only partner who follows you into toad town and other places, it really makes you feel like he’s gonna stay with you all the time
@@buzzytrombone4353 so would that make the tin can trío become partners or isn't just for a scene? Becuase if that's the case than that means all three of them would be partners and the sombrío guy is an unused partner so this would make up for that but if it's not than thats okey too But the real question is why shangri spa?
52:11 My thoughts exactly. Tippi and Olivia are about the same with the difference of Olivia having a more cheerful and child-like personality but overall, both are kind hearted and enjoyable characters.
When it comes to body horror, the thing I immediately think of is the 1000-fold arm finisher against a stapler. Mario just *snapped a dogs jaw open!* Even thinking about it makes my own jaw muscles ache!
"JESUS CHRIST!" What is with the newer Paper Mario games and their fascination with this kind of stuff? It's like they're trying to make it an M rated game without using actual blood or gore: Are the staff at Intelligent Systems alright?
Actually, that is fair. Colored Pencils is basically a set of primed missiles ready to launch. With Rubber Band, you are stripping a character down to their souls very gruesomely, starting with skin flaying all the way to beating up their guts and liver and brains and hearts. You are literally being chomped out of with Hole Puncher if you are not made a zombie as the hole-punched Toads demonstrates. I do not think there is anything analogous to Tape in bodily horror, but it is effectively a Japanese delinquent if it gaining the silhouette of a pompadour means anything. Scissors very literally has the power to kill any person immediately. And yeah, the infamous jaw snapping of the dog-equivalent, Stapler. The Origami King is really dealing with Things out of their depth and they may as well be “things” antithetical to life, and them being stationary is the only reason people accept it.
A cool fan theory about Bob-omb which can explain the Bobby inconsistency is there is 2 types of Bob-omb. natural ones and mass-produced ones. Natural ones can explode multiple times, mass-produced ones can only go boom once.
So I want to add some additional notes from the original JP script as well as a few personal anecdotes as to Olly's motivations and characterization. Firstly, though: That whole "Tools are forbidden when making origami" thing just kind of isn't true. I have yet to find a single source actually saying anything supporting it. Internet searches only seem to link to discussion about Olly. Genuinely have no idea how this got so widespread. In the Japanese version of the script, Olly's hatred toward Toads is played much more personally. He doesn't just hate them solely because Craff T. was a little stupid. He truly considers being written on somewhat... traumatizing? Not quite sure if that's the right word for what I'm talking about, but what it means is that he genuinely can't stand looking at any of the Toads' faces. If you had to go outside but everyone had the face of someone you hate, that'd naturally lead to negative emotions. Which, when coming from an overreacting teenage edgelord, would prompt him to take considerable action. It wouldn't really matter what was written on his body or not, the fact that he was written on scarred him. (Also side note, the fact that the game's character restrictions are literally integral to the villain's motivation is hilarious. This game would be so different if they didn't exist, IntSys was built different for this one.) As for a personal theory of mine, there's something about Olivia vs. Olly that sticks out to me. Olly mentions sometimes that, when he was folding Olivia, he folded her "perfectly, too perfectly." The natural question that should be asked, then, is "If Olivia was folded perfectly enough that she came out as a force of good, what happened to Olly to make him Like That?" Well, say you're one Craff T, trying to write a readable message on a piece of construction paper. Naturally, you'd need to press down hard to make your writing readable... denting the paper, thereby making it 'imperfect.' I believe that the writing is literally the cause of Olly's own imperfections and insecurities, and he's unconsciously aware of that, leading him to resent it and, by extension, Craff T. I do genuinely really like Olly and trying to speculate on what the devs were going for with his motivations, but it is admittedly a bit frustrating how many possibilities could work with only a few extra bits of dialogue. This in particular could've added a bit of weight to Craff T. if they built up to it properly. This game really did kinda suffer from somewhat notable budget and time constraint problems after Color Splash bombed and the pandemic, and the finale definitely seemed to suffer for it. If the game just came out later, we might've confirmed the real answers to these questions. Alas, we do not live in that world. Still love Origami King, though, beautiful game with my favorite boss fights out of anything ever.
I don't really know much of anything of origami culture, I'm just going off what I've heard. Though that does make it worse if that's not true as then there's really no reason he should have had that reaction. But that's interesting, if they leaned more into the Japanese version that could have been better, as long as they properly built it up.
This is a game I surprisingly have grown to love more and more as the years passed, even when I had a good first impression of it. Very good review that covered its plenty of good aspects while sharing the criticisms I have with it.
You’re actually able to tell what move Handaconda is going to choose by looking at its hand while planning your route! So it’s not actually luck for the roshambo phase.
I'm fine with the ending and Olly's motivation but it has nothing to do with the sanctity of the art of origami. I see Olly's motivation metaphorically. It has to do more with a Parent-Child relationship. Every parent will mark or scar their children in some way while raising them. Children often resent these lifelong marks that parents have left them with. Part of growing up and maturing is the realisation that most of these marks, even if they end up being negative, were put there out of love or with good intentions of the parents just trying to do their best.
I guess off the parent/could thing, I always Olly as the flipside to what Olivia represents to me: little kids and their views on the world Olivia is bright eyed and awed by nearly every new experience, finds joy and wonder in the world, and doesn't see the bad in most (She still loves Olly despite his actions, and largely just sees Bowser/Jr/Kamek as friends since they aren't antagonistic here) Olly, by contrast, to me is the toddler throwing a tantrum over something that happened to them. To others, the whole thing may seem insignificant, but to HIM it's everything
Ah, it's so refreshing to hear Origami King positivity. I bought it on release and, even though I don't think it's a perfect game, I still love it. I'll even occasionally come back to replay boss battles because they're that enjoyable, and the soundtrack is one of my favorites in video games. I just wish the plot could've been better... sad. I've never gotten into TTYD but I'm excited for the remake!
There is actually one last time you can see Bobby technically. If you go to the shogun studios place and get a picture taken his spirit will appear in the photo with Mario and Olivia
My favourite track in the game is when you face the flesh golem blooper. The music is so intense yet easy to bop to and is something I remember even today.
As a classic fan who played bug fables and absolutely adored it, it was really upsetting to see how things went with the fandom infighting. I’m glad you mentioned it at the start! I don’t usually see people acknowledge how bad it got
Well, it’s been a long journey, but we’re at the most recent game disregarding remakes. Hard to believe that this marathon was planned all the way back when I was in middle school, but it was very enjoyable. Let’s end strong. And I do wonder what’s next for the marathon.
I feel that disregarding remakes had sadly become a trend. Maybe just me, but I feel that people has the idea of a remake as a superior version, that has to outclass every possible aspect the original Game, which I feel is not the case. A remake is just a take of how these Modern developers would re make and old Game, with the ups and downs we have nowadays. Resident Evil 4 is a very good example, because it has an obvious Focus on other things their original counterparts just didnt have, leaving other thing the original has aside. Yet, one of the most famous videos about It is a comparison to the original calling "Soulless", which is Some regard is not that different to people calling TTYD remake as "lazy". Which honestly, that would be disregarding the Amazing art both Game has just because you liked the OG better. These remakes just had another priorities, and Imo thats fine, If I want to play a better TTYD or RE4 I could just install Dolphin with a 120 fps patch, widescreen and 2k support. Edit: Erm, sorry for the long comment.
I've always felt that the battle system would have been more iconic if it didn't have the timer and if it was based on the idea of solving a Rubik's cube instead of being told how to solve it. Like the player could set up a set of enemies to be on one side of the ring for Mario to deal with and another side on the other side for the partners to deal with without the game telling them that they did the puzzle wrong.
Im glad im not the only one to get massively creepy vibes from the large roaming enemies. Im telling myself that they are basically Frankenstein style monsters composed of the shreded remains of goombas/whatever. But flesh golems are a more concise description. Its even worse if you think whether these beings have thier own sentience. Or if they are more so just given basic orders. They also appear to be used as living prison cells for random civilians. Which is also incredibly messed up.
You have just made my day!!! I really hope you know that. I LOVE your reviewing style, and your paper Mario series is my all time favorite of yours. Gonna be listening to this while I clean the house.
2:00:28 There's a small green cactus in the middle of the desert.(I forget where.) When you free a green Toad, he'll say that you have now subscribed to "Ask a cactus". There are funny jokes in TOK and I find this shit hilarious😂
Fun fact, there is a nice reference to all the previous games on the Princess Peach. As well as a reference to Color Splash in the Overlook Tower. Lemmy's circus and the ship are seen in some pictures on the first floor. During the trip to clear the fog they used similar music notes to Color Splash's purple story. Lot of Color Splash references. There is a shy guy with a straw in the tea shop.
Origami King is in my opinion, Mario’s most criminally overlooked game, a game I didn’t see many people talk about after its release, but I personally really, really liked it, a solid battle system that lacks a point in battling(kinda) and other small nitpicks, but the good things are super good for me, the soundtrack might be my favorite in the series, some of the best bosses in the series, really fun exploration and a more interesting story with some really powerful moments. I really enjoyed this game and was surprised with it, I would even argue it’s better than the N64 original, but weaker than Super and especially TTYD
I think the reason that the partners are not permanent is that they decided to focus the chapters more on the partners than the early games did. Like, imagine chapter five if, instead of Kamek and Bowser jr., you could have Duss T. out. It wouldn't quite work. Even if Kamek and Bowser jr. didn't actually join your party and were more like accompanying NPCs until Bowser jr. is fully restored, the jungle section wouldn't really work if you had a character other than Olivia or an additional character out. The original partner system would have required a different style of story. (I still want the original system back for the next game, though.) That said, I would have loved to see Duss T.'s reaction to learning that Captain T. Ode stole the Spa Marino.
Great video! It's always nice to see someone have a neutral review on a somewhat controversial game and truly enjoying the good that comes from it. I especially appreciate that you cover even the smallest of moments as even they help build the foundation of an enjoyable experience. You have a great style to these long form reviews and I'll definitely be checking out those too. keep up the good work
It definitely helps that the minute-to-minute experience is delightful. Somehow, you do want to explore every nook and cranny; somehow every NPC is interesting enough to warrant talking to once; every boss somehow has a unique take on the boss version of the ring system. For all it can be hated, playing it is fun until you can’t stand it. You very literally cannot say that about Sticker Star and depending on how you find the humor and the usage of the Koopalings you can’t say that about Color Splash either. The Origami King is the first of the Sticker Star-likes held back by having similarities to Sticker Star, rather than being of that caliber.
Well, before seeing the video, I have an addition that who knows if it gonna be on there. I , like many other people, dont enjoy the main gameplay loop of lining up enemies that much, I feel that it really lacks strategy and didnt see any potential. Where I saw potential though, were on boss fights. Really, they are more open up to experimentation and deals with the board on uniques ways, and on your part, open ups to much more variety. I feel that if they elaborated from this point of view, utilizing more options that may open up to more strategy, and maybe on the turns it would had been more like an standart PM battle system, it genuerly could had been an tremendous combat imo.
41:10 I actually have a theory that explosion being the end of a Bob-omb is tied to their mental health, like, essencially if they are ready to die from it, they die. It isn't what Origami King tries to tell, but it is An explanation.
I actually had a thought as to how they could’ve handled Olly better. The reason he was doing what he did was because he didn’t want to feel rejected by society. It seems like Olly was the first Origami creation by Craff T. that was brought to life, and because of that, Olly had felt isolated from the rest of the paper community. They respected him, but he never felt like he himself belonged; this could be expanded upon by showing how Craff T. sees Olly as a sort of son, despite already having a family of his own. In an act to feel less lonely, Olly wanted to create more Origami people, so he created Olivia as a sort of experiment. It worked, and he did feel a little less lonely, but then he got an idea: what if he made Origami out of some of the residents? Maybe one of the Toads he’d met volunteered for this experiment, and when he came out of it, the Toad felt a little weird, but still felt like himself (in this context, Origami people don’t lose their mindsets, that’s caused by something else). This high at the experiment being a success caused Olly to go a little too far, turning almost everyone into Origami just so he wouldn’t be alone… including his own creator. When you first meet Peach, yes, she is Origami, but she’s still herself… mostly. She’s learned that being Origami isn’t so bad at all, and is willing to accept Origami people into her kingdom. The problem? Olly is still here, and has converted the castle into his base of operations. He’s perfected a special fold that can alter the brain, but Peach somehow managed to resist that power and revert the fold, so Olly just keeps her locked up. As the game progresses, Peach wonders just what she can do as Origami and tries experimenting with her new body, trying to find out Olly’s motivations (think the peach sections from 64 and TTYD). However, not only does she learn Olly’s motivations, she also practices how to fold herself, eventually being able to transform completely. And then, when Olly is defeated, he realized just how much damaged he caused to the world. He finally snaps out of it, regret pounding on him like a hammer. When Mario gets Peach off the wall and refolds her back to her Origami self, Peach also recognizes that Olly wasn’t trying to be evil, he just got out of control. Olly finally accepts that he wasn’t supposed to come to life and offers to be folded into the last paper crane so the others can undo his damage. But Peach doesn’t accept that. She turns herself into the last paper crane (remember, she’s been practicing shapeshifting during her time in the castle) and makes her own wish. “I wish that paper people and Origami people can coexist peacefully, and that all the damage done by King Olly is undone.” When the paper cranes fly off as the wish is granted, as each one flies, an Origami person suddenly snaps back to reality, with Peach being the one to restore her castle back to the way it was before. Peach lands in front of Mario before unfolding herself, and sees Olly and Olivia, alive and happy together. Olly thanks Peach for what she did, before he and Olivia fly off to start a kingdom of their own: the Origami Kingdom. Sure, this ending takes away the sacrifice Olivia made at the end of the real game, but I genuinely think this could’ve worked if they had gone in this direction.
When origami king came out i was spoiled about Bobby's death on RUclips so i didn't get that same gut wrenching feeling when Bobby dies, but damn it still hurts when i see it
@tiagocervera5661 i assume they mean how the Smithy Gang members are each themed around certain objects, but with the object incorporated into the design rather than just being the actual object (Peach Showtime did something similar with its bosses, which I really liked)
TTYD is still my favorite, but Origami King is so full of little ideas and moments, it's really a great game Did not except this when first playing it, but I loved it for all of the reasons I also loved TTYD. The world, the different situations you are put in, the humor and even the characters It finally feels like an adventure again !
I unfortunately also knew something would happen to bobby. I unfortunately heard that bobby would leave your party at some point, but i had just thought he was going to leave the team at some point. His death definitely shocked me.
40:43 this scene was changed from the japanese version There, that Bob-omb has some kind of memory of olivia, implying that he jas bobby's soul(or that bob-ombs are some kind of hivemind)
My personal ranking of Paper Mario games would go like this: 1 - Thousand Year Door 2 - Super Paper Mario 3 - Origami King 4 - Color Splash 5 - Paper Mario 64 6 - Sticker Star So yeah, Origami King is really not bad. (As for why I'm placing 64 that low... Yeah I really find it hard to enjoy today).
This might sound weird now that the TTYD remake is out, but Origami King is what brought back my love for the series as someone who didn't really like Super that much.
I bought this game back in 2020 but never really played it until now, cause of all the TTYD hype. Well Origami King is actually really great - nice visuals, music, world exploration, and I also like the puzzle based battle system. I’m at the third warp pipe area and will definitely finish it this time
I’m so happy that you finally able to play Paper Mario the Origami King. And make a video on it finally. And I’m so glad that you really enjoyed it. It is a very good game. And it’s so much fun to play. I knew you were going to like it, and have a good time with it. 😊
1:54:51 one thing i wish thar was in the game was diffrent atack forms, like insted of just lines, 4 by 4s, and whole clears, why not zig zag, single ring, and other weard shapes
There's one thing I dislike about chapter 1 being so mid. I've seen a ton of classic fans drop the game because they didn't like the 1st chapter, which meant they didn't get to experience an otherwise phenomenal game.
While watching the premiere of this, I had a thought: what if this game was the fourth entry in the series, after Super Paper Mario? Would the fan base be as divided as it was when this game first came out? Super Paper Mario was pretty divisive when it came out; people have been nicer in retrospect and while I do think people that resentment would’ve passed in due time, Sticker Star and Colour Splash really did Super a favour by making it look good in comparison. Kinda like the Star Wars prequels. When the sequel trilogy came out, people realized that the prequels, despite their flaws, were genuine attempts at storytelling and not just corporate cash grabs. My point is, maybe more classic Paper Mario fans would’ve liked this game more if it came out directly after Super? I’ll never say a single game appeals to the entire world, but I think this game would’ve been a nice follow up to Super, really showing how that game was just a one-off and not the direction the whole series was going in.
@@TheRedGuy True, but at least it’s not too different than the ones in Thousand-Year Door and 64. I don’t think it would be too hard for them to see the good aspects of this battle system. It’s not perfect, but in theory, it’s not bad at all.
I think they would have, easily. People criticize the elements in this game as they relate to Sticker Star and Color Splash but refuse to take into account the context of how much better this game handles everything - without SS and CS to sour fans' moods on a lot of this game's choices, I think they'd have gone in with a much more open mind.
@@Ah0yKatie See, I actually think it might be the opposite, at least for me? Like there are parts of this game where I'm thinking "This is bad, but it's a step in the right direction." But if it had come out in place of Sticker Star, I think I'd be thinking something closer to "Holy guacamole, how did they screw it up like this?" It would be the worst one, instead of third from the bottom.
There's no "rule" against using tools when making origami. You are not supposed to write on them, but that's more a "well, now it's not as pretty as it could be" thing rather than some huge taboo because in traditional east-asian art negative space is highly valued. Think of it like someone using felt pens to color an artwork instead of "proper" oil colors or aquarells.
Shoutout to the most bs collectible of origami king: the medals that you only get at the END of the game (and no, the game never tells you this, which is hell for completionists). not the first for beating the game, that's free. The second for not using the equippable accessories is annoying, but can be done. The most bs one being the one you only get from never dying, even to the cutscene game overs (genies, boulder runs you over, shy guy finish last, etc.) Imagine playing the game, thinking you had gotten all the trophies and achievements, only to realize you had screwed up by dying at something you couldn't control.
I do agree that the ring system could use a bit more Like the eyeballs from mario 64, like an enemy you need to spin around on the ring to make them dizzy to then attack
38:20 Fun fact: if you do take a new picture after Bobby's death, Bobby's ghost will appear on the picture (though you can't set his pose and costume). It is both a funny reference to the urban legend of ghosts appearing on photographs, and a proof that his spirit will always be with you, and that's beautiful. Edit: Nevermind, you discovered it yourself XD
I've been waiting so long for this. I can't believe it's finally here and just in time for my first ever playthrough of TTYD right around the corner with the remake I look forward to checking out your retrospective on that game once I've finished playing it
I think this is the best Origami King review out there! It’s clear, realistic about the game’s issues, and most importantly, excited about what the game gets right. Sad to hear about the online infighting. Even as a classic fan, I had no patience for arguing about/making silly comparisons to TTYD (especially as I always preferred PM64) so I never paid much attention to what was said online. Never heard of Bug Fables until now, I’m glad it did well, it looks cool!
Been a long time coming, but I'm glad to see you review one of my favorite games of all time. I really enjoy the way you look at these games, so I'm excited to see what you do next.
holy shit !! i was just bingeing all your paper mario videos and i was like aw man i can’t wait for the origami king ! bless you for making these , not only do i agree with a lot of what you have to say about all the games but i appreciate the rewrites of the stories of TYD and SPM 10/10 from me
I think that another thing that could've greatly improved the game would have just been more weapon variety, and more enemies that react to different weapons. It's very underutilized, but Ninjis do actually counter hammer attacks, and sometimes the correct lineups for them end up being a 2x2 formation, basically the one and only instance where the Tail attacks have any meaningful value. More weapons with unique attack ranges could also add a lot to battles. Like maybe Quake Hammer could affect all grounded enemies on the two innermost rings, or having fire/ice flowers be able to freely target 4 enemies rather than being locked to a line, or a Tornado Jump that has an effect of a 3x3 area. More weapon diversity would add way more strategic descisions to battles, but they would put emphasis on the phase of battles that clearly aren't the focus as of now. However simply having more diversity in weapon AOE would affect how you go about solving the puzzles. Rather than constantly being on the lookout for a 1x4 or 2x2, you could think about the current enemy types at play on the board, what weapons would be best for those enemies, and then aligning them in a specific way that lets you hit them with as many of those weapons as possible. This would other rammifications of course, such as making the weapon durability a much bigger annoyance, since by expanding the weapon variety, it makes it a lot less likely for you to carry several duplicates of the same weapon types, and when your weapons break it would sting harder due to not having a backup, which in turn could make some players less willing to use their weapons. A way to solve that could be to re-introduce some sort of FP system, or to remove restrictions on weapons altogether and just give them all infinite uses. If they're all equally balanced and just situationally more useful than others, it can still be engaging enough. You could just remove the shiny/flashy/legendary teirs to the normal weapons, cause having 4 variants for all avalible weapons would be a lot to manage. You could just ramp up Mario's existing attack stat that scales with his Max HP, it currently exists, but it's just very subtle, it only goes up by 1 for every 20 Max HP increase, so it's barely noticable. I could ramble on for longer about how I'd like to see the Origami King combat system developed and improved, but I'll cut off myself before I write a 10 page essay.
I just finished binging your other Paper Mario reviews, and this whole series has been just so good. Your effort and video quality is amazing. You definitely got a subscribe from me. The detail you go into even for the small things is really appreciated into making an entertaining video. I'm excited for your Bug Fables review and whatever else you got in store.
When I was a kid, playing Paper Mario on N64 and The Thousand Year Door, I talked to the NPCs. Heard their names, Tayce T., Russ T., Zess T., and as I kid, I wondered what the T. meant. Well, I have a proposal, what if the T. in these characters names, was short for Toad? Tayce Toad, Russ Toad, Zess Toad. But, because it’s not normal to just say a person’s full name, they abbreviated their name to just be T.
2:40:24 Actually you can see from doing the rings if it’s going to do Rock, Paper or Scissors and you can pick which one is the right answer after looking if it will do Rock, Paper, or Scissors. But you have to be quick otherwise it will change his hand to something else. And you will have to quickly change it to the right solution again.
You know, since partners are inconsistent and the ring system encourages finishes enemies quickly, why not have olivia gain partner like attacks you can use which she'll learn and grow as you progress the story. She already does vhelemental stuff in boss fights, so why not have it so mario takes a turn and Olivia takes a turn? Instead of mario just sweeping things, it'd let olivia show off her growing skill in oragami and how she isn't just their to be a friend. As an example, her first earth moves could be a rock roll and a stone uppercut. But as you use her moves more and find shops, she can make oragami enemies to do sepcial attacks. Like making pillers of rock mario can bounce oragami shells on with his hammer, or maybe have a wave ring attack which mario has to time a jump to avoid getting soggy like the enemies.
Watching this video really reminded me how much of a return to form this game actually is. I played it before and was very disappointed that they would try to develop this weaker story that strays away from the original trilogy rather than building on top of what they set up. However, I was blind sighted by how much this game does want to tell a story and create a world worth caring about with characters worth caring about. I still think the original trilogy did characters and world building for the Mushroom Kingdom better overall, but the fact that it has this at all makes this more of an actual Paper Mario game again and didn't think too much about that. So, thanks for reminding me. This game is actually decent. I also just love some of the new details that add more life to this world, such as the more interactive nature of the world and the cinematics. These aspects elevate this game's presentation far above any other Paper Mario game and I would love to see this sort of thing applied to an even grander Paper Mario adventure in the future.
I mean in Kirby forgotten land all of the waddle dee npc s with unique looks are called by their job like blacksmith waddle dee and announcer waddle dee
Nintendo is definitely and has been aware of peoples toad hate because in color splash a toad mentions how and I quote “Mario, sir! I’m a huge fan! Thanks for taking the time to talk to a normal toad like me with no unique traits or discernible characteristics!” They definitely knew it was a thing ever since their 2nd modern entry
Honestly I used to be more in the TTYD camp, never like toxic but definitely a preference. I never hated TOK but almost randomly I've been hit with this big soft spot for the game and tbh I really like it. I think it's just that now that we have Mario RPGs proper back, I just don't care about TOK's faults in that regard anymore and only see the positives (tbf it helps that I actually like the ring).
This is gonna be a long comment probably- but i wanna give my take on things. its bitter sweet to see this series come to an end, i know we have ttyd hd coming up, but that feels like more of a end credits scene extra then the end- this is the last proper game so- before i give my opinions i just wanted to thank you red, you've given me a better view for ALL these games, besides 64 and ttyd, these reviews have been top tier, like some of the best game reviews on this site, your wit, humour, insightfulness, commentary and obscure tidbits have been extremely enjoyable and ill probably rewatch these all for years to come! These videos are very special to me, hell your color splash video couldnt have come at a better time thanks to you explain the entire moral of that game and your own alibies about it, so thank you so so so so so much, i and the rest of your viewers couldnt thank you more. now for the scary part... OPINIONS!!!! 😱😱 As i said on a comment on your community post, origami king is my most hated, id say its probably comparable to your hatred of sticker star pre-review, now watching this is a wakeup call, that maybe my opinions were blinded by toxicity from other, they were- as you said at the begining the fanbase was at its worst at the reveal of origami king, and my time in this fanbase has not been pleasant at all since, mostly anyway. it kinda made me grow a distain for origami king specifically, since that was these toxic fans fav game, and especially since my sticker star replay, which, as the same as you, kinda made my pure hatred for it go away, and i never cared much about color splash, but recently i have been try to be a better person, and dunking on this game... isnt the kindest thing to do, even if the modern fans started all of this. not to mention, seeing a reviewer i genuinly respect and (mostly) agree with like it- dude i think i should just remove my hate goggles, so when critiquing this game im gonna try and not act like avgn play dr jeckle and mr hyde, and be respect and jus tpoint out stuff i genuinely don't like. i do heavily disagree with your opinion on the artstyle, i think its the worst looking game in the series, i think it looks really dull and boring some areas from chapter 2, 3 and 5, and the look the floor has is very repetitive, infact its the look... almost EVERYTHING has, no unuiqe texture or kink, just that flat paper look with the lighter insides of the paper sticking through, even sticker star and color splash, which artstyles i liked, didnt do this, having unique patterns and what not, it all comes off very plain and boring, and im really not a fan. my main problem of the artstyle is with the characters, i agree fully with you in terms of the white outlines, i dont mind them, but my main issue is the animations and charecter changes from ttyd-super. the animations in ttyd and super had this really nice smooth, fluid look to them, that was taken in sticker star, replaced by a ugly stop motion look, even if they added lik 3 extra frames i wouldnt mind it nearly as much (plus it makes modding a pain) not to mention ttyd hd brings it to its absoloute limit by adding fully new and beautiful reaction animations - but tok just looks lifeless and... not my cup of tea. also the charecters looked alot better in ttyd and super, koopas, pokeys, boo's especially. but im already going on really long here so ill leave it at that. the gameplay is the reason i hate this game, the battle system, to be precise, it is insufferable, and couldnt be more annoying, the same boring repetitive puzzle again and again and again gets EXTREMELY tedious for me, its like trying to play half life but when you reload you have to play a round of chess, i dont want to play chess i want to play the actual game- the worst part is that the battle besides the annoying gimmick is pretty okay! but the puzzle RUINS it for me. anyway- i think thats it, i dont want to go on for TOO long, but i already have so ill end it here, as alwasy red thank you so much for another just amazing video, even if i disagree with you im watching more so to watch a video from a creator who i love, not to see an opinion (altough a nice nontoxic opinion is always fun to listen too), im definately gonna stay watching your videos, cause your videos are just consistantly amazing, pm or not, thank you so much for this journey, ive been watching since before the spm ideal remake video, and its just been a blast, i may add some comments on these videos again in a few years just to give a older me's take on these lol, but yeah, thank you so much man, its been amazing, cant wait for what you have in store next (:
Awesome video! I'm really glad that people have come around on The Origami King, and that from what I can tell, opinion on it is generally positive, since I really loved it, and it kinda sucked seeing a lot of people lambast it at first just because it wasn't a sequel to TTYD. Sure, it's probably not as good as the thousand year door, but it doesn't have to be imo. It's got it's own great combat system, a pretty solid story, exceptional music and presentation and overall it's just a great time. Shocked that a video this high quality doesn't have more views, and your channel more subs! Hope your content can get more of the recognition it deserves
Ironically enough ttyd might be the game some people grow up with because of the remake. Personally I’m glad to finally be able to play the game after hearing about how good it is
I like origami king and it has a lot of stuff going for it, but just like all of the other modern paper Mario games it has so much unnecessary shit that drags it down. The game would’ve been so much better without the battle system. I do like the boss battles though. I know this is probably a hot take but I prefer color splash to origami king. Origami king feels like it’s trying to be like the original two games but failing at it. Well color splash is just trying to do its own thing and having fun with it (the battle system in color splash also sucks tho). Origami Kings ending also sucks
This game honestly could have been truly awesome. I think it’s pretty good for a game in the series that has disregarded RPG elements almost entirely, but it still had so much potential. It genuinely has good characters, good moments, fun boss fights, and a nice interconnected world, but it’s held back by them limiting themselves in terms of character creativity, and the major boss fights could have maybe used the “things” to make unique out of place characters, like maybe we have a guy in a tank with an explosive Colored Pencil barrel, or maybe a knight wielding scissors as a weapon, or maybe a dragon made of tape. The bosses are fun mechanically but it’s still underwhelming to fight inanimate objects as bosses (Rubber Band was at least a little creative). Other than that, due to the game’s themes of origami and paper allowing Bowser’s Minions to be characters again, this game is quite a fun one. I think the Swan Lake ballet bit in the second area of the game was the most I've smiled during a Paper Mario game in a lengthy period of time. Gave me a little more hope for the series, and now we have a Thousand Year Door Remake in… 5 days… wow.
I dearly loved this game when I first played it. Like you said, it has its issues but they're all minor. Loved the story, loved the visuals, loved the characters (olivia is my favourite mario character period), loved the combat, and the soundtrack is my favourite overall soundtrack of ANY mario game. Though I will say there's one thing I disagree with you about on: the ending. Both your thoughts on Olly's motives and Olivia's sacrifice. I believe the reason Nintendo gave Olly as petty of a motive as they did, while yes having it be a nod to origami culture, I believe it was moreso to get you to HATE Olly. They want you to *despise* him. They want you to rue for his painful end. His dialogue suits it, even the unsettling atmosphere of his theme fits into this. And there's no easier ways to get you to hate a villain than to have that villain take away a character you loved, and have it be all for a stupid reason that literally does not matter. Was there better ways to go about doing it? Yes, absolutely. But I still think it does its job good enough. Now, as for Olivia's sacrifice, I'll be a bit biased here as, again, she is by far my favourite character in the entire Mario franchise, but I think it still works. Unnecessary? Yes, her wish could have been worded differently, that is forever true. Would the game have been better without it? Absolutely not LOL I didn't realize at first when she said her wish that it would apply to her as well, so as I watched the castle unfold I felt happy and satisfied. But then it showed the group all at the base of the castle, I noticed a character missing, it started to dawn on me, then Luigi said: "Hey, we're missing someone. Where's Olivia?" And then my heart snapped in half. The ending plays into Olivia's sacrifice intensely well, too. The night atmosphere of the festival, slowly walking through the town watching all the citizens take in the festivities, all while that slow, POWERFUL rendition of the SM64 Peach's Castle theme plays, reaching its climax as the camera focuses on Olly and Olivia's thrones, only for Peach to notice Mario thinking about Olivia and saying how she wished she could have met her, only to be capped off by everyone releasing the lanterns into the sky with a soft voice singing in the back and a final thank you accompanying it... It is powerful. VERY powerful... if you care about the character deeply, which I very much do. Again. I know I'm biased because she's my favourite, but this ending hit me as hard, if not harder, than Super's. And this time, there's no ambiguity: "oh they could live on in another universe". no. Olivia isn't just dead, she is erased. This character you spent the whole game bonding with and growing attached to. Gone forever, just like that. Who even knows if she has an afterlife when her very existence was undone? And thus, as a result, I think it is likely in the top 3 best endings in the series. I don't really care if I'm biased at this point, if it got me closer to tears than even Super did then that is a feat that need to be acknowledged.
As I said, I think the game does enough with her to earn her sacrificing herself, it does work thematically, just that the justification for it could have been better.
Hi

Yep
Even in PM1 and 2, you have bobomb that quite litteraly explode and suicide on you
This is why I never understand the gripe that peoples had with it.
@@seasonembrace3624 Well, the bob bomb enemies in Pm1 in the Koopa fortress do actually die when they explode.
It doesn't change anyway that this argument is stupid in my opinon and shouldn't exist in a first place xD
@@seasonembrace3624 Those ones weren't the same colours as the regular Bob-ombs so they probably were organic and could do it on a whim.
Oh wow, that's a bit excessive.
@@TheRedGuy You're telling me
The inflation in the Mushroom Kingdom was most likely caused by New Super Mario Bros. 2. It seems as if the economy hasn't recovered since.
As established in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, the Mushroom Kingdom economy is completely unhinged
Now they've added an extra 0 to the coin cap in TTYD too. I wonder where this is going...
Sure, they’re not all perfect but I absolutely loved them on my first playthrough of Origami King so much so that they’re my second/third favourite group of Paper Mario villains (need to play the TTYD remake before I can fully decide where I place them)
Inanimate object characters are underrated
In the Japanese version, during Olivia's last bench interaction moment, when she's worried about putting Mario and everyone in danger by facing her brother, Bowser just walks up to Olivia's face, and told her that, I quote:
"In peril? Who do you think I am? I am Bowser! Even crying babies would go silent upon seeing me! "
(This is the part where Olivia would go on a 3-second silent before replying: "Wow. That really puts it into perspective." in the English version)
And I shit you not, this is Olivia's reply in Japanese version:
"Wow you're right. Bowser's face is so scary. I unconsciously calmed down."
There's no development of Bowser and Junior's father-and-son relationship in the Japanese version, Bowser doesn't even express the same amount of concern the ENG version had during the Volcano chase scene. After watching Kamek and Jr being run over by the macho Goomba, He only said: "Although I worried about them, but now we can only believe that they'll follow up later. The indomitable Koopa Corps won't be defeated that easily."
In the Japanese version, Bowser sees Junior more as a soldier under his command than a son.
Huh. Usually English scripts make things worse when translating from Japanese so this is kinda of surprising.
@@sahaprocks7751O.K.A: rare translation change W
I love that "Based based based based" during the question about silencing Toads XD
And Olivia's motivation for making the wish, would be mainly to save Peach from being stuck as a part of a castle forever.
great idea!
I would’ve loved if the 1000 crane wish was fatal too.
It is implied that Olly used the fold of life technique to bring the Legion of Stationary to life, he just gave sentience to the origami craftsman’s supplies, they are implied to be under Olly’s control in a similar way to the other folded soldiers.
He _folded_ the solid inatimate objects to life?
Maybe he eather used the ritual that made them alive and could alter it to create these objects. I see it how you alter a skill,, technique or magic to do a very specialized thing.
@PrismPoint He folded the Velumentals, right?
@@Aktedya1-jt7vw he made them folded. They were like ancient entities living there right?
@@MyBTS91Yeah, from the statues and the fact that their elemental attacks were like real Water, Fire, and etc, I think the implication is that they weren't made of Paper in the first place
The Handaconda actually telegraphs which it will pick at the start of your turn, however it changes the longer you take, so you have to pay attention and memorize what it shows before it has the chance to change it. For example it may show scissors for a few seconds then switch to showing rock, this is to throw you off and think it will actually play rock rather than scissors.
Never even noticed that, I guess I was too focused on the rings that I never even looked at it lol.

52:11 My thoughts exactly. Tippi and Olivia are about the same with the difference of Olivia having a more cheerful and child-like personality but overall, both are kind hearted and enjoyable characters.
The only captain toad name I’ll accept in this game is Captain T.ode cause at least it’s a neat spin in it

This game would be so different if they didn't exist, IntSys was built different for this one.)
As for a personal theory of mine, there's something about Olivia vs.
I could have sworn that the origami tool taboo was a thing I heard back in grade school, way before Olly.
Well, to be fair, if my groin was tattooed without my consent, I’d be pissed as well.
I never thought of body horror until you brought it up and it's horrifying how much there is in this game.
I still can't believe how this game didn't get nominated for best music or graphics.
This is a game I surprisingly have grown to love more and more as the years passed, even when I had a good first impression of it. Very good review that covered its plenty of good aspects while sharing the criticisms I have with it.
I feel like BJ "dying" to Scissors is a reference to Sticker Star since the Scissors Thing like immediately kills him. They're even both green!
I never thought of it that way-that’s a really cool interpretation, and a pretty accurate metaphor!
Wait, this metaphor is actually really good. I like this a lot.
I guess off the parent/could thing, I always Olly as the flipside to what Olivia represents to me: little kids and their views on the world
Olivia is bright eyed and awed by nearly every new experience, finds joy and wonder in the world, and doesn't see the bad in most (She still loves Olly despite his actions, and largely just sees Bowser/Jr/Kamek as friends since they aren't antagonistic here)
Olly, by contrast, to me is the toddler throwing a tantrum over something that happened to them. To others, the whole thing may seem insignificant, but to HIM it's everything
“Babe, wake up. New Red Guy Paper Mario vid just dropped.”
Nevermind it was mentioned 10 minutes later
I could talk for hours about why I love this game... Definitely my favorite, love to see it get attention. This was a good breakdown of it!

I love that song so much I wrote and sang lyrics for it about my grief over Bobby
You have a great style to these long form reviews and I'll definitely be checking out those too. keep up the good work
Thanks a lot!
My personal favorite game in this series! I’m so exited for this retrospective!
I reckon this red guy is a real chip off the ol block. Hes talking about the origami game
“I wish that paper people and Origami people can coexist peacefully, and that all the damage done by King Olly is undone.”
When the paper cranes fly off as the wish is granted, as each one flies, an Origami person suddenly snaps back to reality, with Peach being the one to restore her castle back to the way it was before.
When origami king came out i was spoiled about Bobby's death on RUclips so i didn't get that same gut wrenching feeling when Bobby dies, but damn it still hurts when i see it
I wish the bosses were more like the smithy gang
But how do You mean like
Axem rangers and Claymorton are not axes or swords
@tiagocervera5661 i assume they mean how the Smithy Gang members are each themed around certain objects, but with the object incorporated into the design rather than just being the actual object (Peach Showtime did something similar with its bosses, which I really liked)
TTYD is still my favorite, but Origami King is so full of little ideas and moments, it's really a great game
Did not except this when first playing it, but I loved it for all of the reasons I also loved TTYD. The world, the different situations you are put in, the humor and even the characters
It finally feels like an adventure again !
I unfortunately also knew something would happen to bobby. I unfortunately heard that bobby would leave your party at some point, but i had just thought he was going to leave the team at some point. His death definitely shocked me.
40:43 this scene was changed from the japanese version
There, that Bob-omb has some kind of memory of olivia, implying that he jas bobby's soul(or that bob-ombs are some kind of hivemind)
Huh, that's weird, I definitely prefer the change there.
Thank god we didn't get the Bom-omborg
My personal ranking of Paper Mario games would go like this:
1 - Thousand Year Door
2 - Super Paper Mario
3 - Origami King
4 - Color Splash
5 - Paper Mario 64
6 - Sticker Star
So yeah, Origami King is really not bad.
(As for why I'm placing 64 that low... Yeah I really find it hard to enjoy today).
Identical to my ranking and I would put the remake of TTYD as a new number 1
Would have helped a lot with variety in battles.
There's one thing I dislike about chapter 1 being so mid. I've seen a ton of classic fans drop the game because they didn't like the 1st chapter, which meant they didn't get to experience an otherwise phenomenal game.
My favourite part of this game is the Wind Waker portion.
You all know what I'm talking about.
I cannot wait for the next review!!! Great job with covering the entire PM series.
Is interesting to think about. The battle system would still probably be contentious.
@@Ah0yKatie My point exactly.
@@Ah0yKatie See, I actually think it might be the opposite, at least for me?
Like there are parts of this game where I'm thinking "This is bad, but it's a step in the right direction." But if it had come out in place of Sticker Star, I think I'd be thinking something closer to "Holy guacamole, how did they screw it up like this?"
It would be the worst one, instead of third from the bottom.
Ok the beginning of the video really makes me want to play it again, until I remember I’m a dumbass in their puzzles 😅😅😅
I love your videos so much keep up the good work man
There's no "rule" against using tools when making origami.
I would’ve loved a Folded Peach boss battle.
I do agree that the ring system could use a bit more
Like the eyeballs from mario 64, like an enemy you need to spin around on the ring to make them dizzy to then attack

I think this is the best Origami King review out there! It’s clear, realistic about the game’s issues, and most importantly, excited about what the game gets right.
Sad to hear about the online infighting. Even as a classic fan, I had no patience for arguing about/making silly comparisons to TTYD (especially as I always preferred PM64) so I never paid much attention to what was said online. Never heard of Bug Fables until now, I’m glad it did well, it looks cool!

My first paper mario. What a time
Awesome video, thanks for your continued dedication and endless effort to create these wonderful reviews.
I figured that's what that stood for, but it was nice they made some fun names with that.
Years waiting for tehse moment, thanks for giving your time to do this content 🎉🎉
Great video! Worth the wait! my guy nearly everything I agree with and I take back any anger from hating kamek!👍
I mean in Kirby forgotten land all of the waddle dee npc s with unique looks are called by their job like blacksmith waddle dee and announcer waddle dee
14:05 Oh. Just like Goblin Slayer!
They've got Goblin Slayer, Priestess, Elf Archer, Lizard Priest, and Dwarf Sorcerer
Thank you for these videos. They're very good!
Nintendo is definitely and has been aware of peoples toad hate because in color splash a toad mentions how and I quote “Mario, sir! I’m a huge fan! Thanks for taking the time to talk to a normal toad like me with no unique traits or discernible characteristics!”
They definitely knew it was a thing ever since their 2nd modern entry
Honestly I used to be more in the TTYD camp, never like toxic but definitely a preference. I never hated TOK but almost randomly I've been hit with this big soft spot for the game and tbh I really like it.
I think it's just that now that we have Mario RPGs proper back, I just don't care about TOK's faults in that regard anymore and only see the positives (tbf it helps that I actually like the ring).
This is gonna be a long comment probably- but i wanna give my take on things.
its bitter sweet to see this series come to an end, i know we have ttyd hd coming up, but that feels like more of a end credits scene extra then the end- this is the last proper game so-
before i give my opinions i just wanted to thank you red, you've given me a better view for ALL these games, besides 64 and ttyd, these reviews have been top tier, like some of the best game reviews on this site, your wit, humour, insightfulness, commentary and obscure tidbits have been extremely enjoyable and ill probably rewatch these all for years to come! These videos are very special to me, hell your color splash video couldnt have come at a better time thanks to you explain the entire moral of that game and your own alibies about it, so thank you so so so so so much, i and the rest of your viewers couldnt thank you more.
now for the scary part... OPINIONS!!!! 😱😱
As i said on a comment on your community post, origami king is my most hated, id say its probably comparable to your hatred of sticker star pre-review, now watching this is a wakeup call, that maybe my opinions were blinded by toxicity from other, they were- as you said at the begining the fanbase was at its worst at the reveal of origami king, and my time in this fanbase has not been pleasant at all since, mostly anyway. it kinda made me grow a distain for origami king specifically, since that was these toxic fans fav game, and especially since my sticker star replay, which, as the same as you, kinda made my pure hatred for it go away, and i never cared much about color splash, but recently i have been try to be a better person, and dunking on this game... isnt the kindest thing to do, even if the modern fans started all of this.
not to mention, seeing a reviewer i genuinly respect and (mostly) agree with like it- dude i think i should just remove my hate goggles, so when critiquing this game im gonna try and not act like avgn play dr jeckle and mr hyde, and be respect and jus tpoint out stuff i genuinely don't like.
i do heavily disagree with your opinion on the artstyle, i think its the worst looking game in the series, i think it looks really dull and boring some areas from chapter 2, 3 and 5, and the look the floor has is very repetitive, infact its the look... almost EVERYTHING has, no unuiqe texture or kink, just that flat paper look with the lighter insides of the paper sticking through, even sticker star and color splash, which artstyles i liked, didnt do this, having unique patterns and what not, it all comes off very plain and boring, and im really not a fan.
my main problem of the artstyle is with the characters, i agree fully with you in terms of the white outlines, i dont mind them, but my main issue is the animations and charecter changes from ttyd-super. the animations in ttyd and super had this really nice smooth, fluid look to them, that was taken in sticker star, replaced by a ugly stop motion look, even if they added lik 3 extra frames i wouldnt mind it nearly as much (plus it makes modding a pain) not to mention ttyd hd brings it to its absoloute limit by adding fully new and beautiful reaction animations - but tok just looks lifeless and... not my cup of tea.
also the charecters looked alot better in ttyd and super, koopas, pokeys, boo's especially. but im already going on really long here so ill leave it at that.
the gameplay is the reason i hate this game, the battle system, to be precise, it is insufferable, and couldnt be more annoying, the same boring repetitive puzzle again and again and again gets EXTREMELY tedious for me, its like trying to play half life but when you reload you have to play a round of chess, i dont want to play chess i want to play the actual game- the worst part is that the battle besides the annoying gimmick is pretty okay! but the puzzle RUINS it for me.
anyway- i think thats it, i dont want to go on for TOO long, but i already have so ill end it here, as alwasy red thank you so much for another just amazing video, even if i disagree with you im watching more so to watch a video from a creator who i love, not to see an opinion (altough a nice nontoxic opinion is always fun to listen too), im definately gonna stay watching your videos, cause your videos are just consistantly amazing, pm or not, thank you so much for this journey, ive been watching since before the spm ideal remake video, and its just been a blast, i may add some comments on these videos again in a few years just to give a older me's take on these lol, but yeah, thank you so much man, its been amazing, cant wait for what you have in store next (:
Thanks you so much!
Absolutely not LOL
I didn't realize at first when she said her wish that it would apply to her as well, so as I watched the castle unfold I felt happy and satisfied. But then it showed the group all at the base of the castle, I noticed a character missing, it started to dawn on me, then Luigi said: "Hey, we're missing someone. Where's Olivia?"
And then my heart snapped in half.
@@TheRedGuy Ah I misunderstood lol mb. Yea I can see that
