To celebrate Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door being remade, I decided to play one of my least favorite games of all time: Paper Mario Sticker Star. HOWEVER THIS ISNT ANY NORMAL PLAYTHROUGH OF STICKER STAR:
1. Beat the game with as little battles as possible. This shows how the game doesn't incentivize you to battle at all.
2. Every fight I get into I have to perfect. This shows how easy and broken the battles are especially when using Thing Stickers.
3. I can't get any +5 Heart upgrades. This essentially makes this run a "No level run".

So when are you gonna sit through Color Splash?
At least it's not chinese spyware (*cough* OPERA GX *cough*)
High quality vid
Try this with colour splash lol
You have limited resources to fight with, and defeating enemies often only removes them from your path.
The best way to deal with combat is to run.
There is a great deal of backtracking as you find items and go back to use them to solve puzzles in often esoteric ways.
Mechanically, Sticker Star shares more with survival horror than it does a turn based RPG.
And there's a horrifying monstrosity following you everywhere (kersti)
@@appelofdoom8211honestly kersti's sacrifice in the ending is "thank God she's gone" then Mario wishes her back like wtf
I’ve always compared sticker Star to resident evil, and it seems to be a common comparison. By the way, mashing A to run actually doesn’t help, it just darkens the screen if you already won the coin flip.
@@appelofdoom8211 The most evil pursuer type monster of any game.
I'd rather go through the game with Nemesis following Mario.
might aswell be a horror game with all the shit it throws your awy
the irl paper bits are SO charming, I feel like the time it probably took to print/cut/write everything was 100% worth it
this is also my opinion
Now I’m going to actually watch the video instead of podcasting it
honestly one of the most unforgivable parts of this game to me is that Bowser has ZERO DIALOGUE. None. He is the MAIN VILLAIN, and has previously been one of the best written characters in the Mario RPGs and he doesn't say ANYTHING.
this isnt one of the most unforgivable parts, it is THE most unforgivable parts. heres hoping bowser is written how hes supposed to be in M&L brothership
And it's not like the game itself has no dialogue, characters literally talk around him as if he's not there.
what?? was this game made by morons
Kersti: There he is, Mario! It's Bowser! You powered yourself up using the Sticker Comet, didn't you?
Bowser: *_WHERE ARE MY LIIIIIINES?! I DON'T EVEN GET OOOOOOONE!!!!_*
Meanwhile the goomba talks. The first boss.
Mashing the a button to run actually doesn’t increase your success rate, it just darkens the screen if you won the coin flip. Sticker Star calculates your run chance upon selecting to run. So all rapidly pressing A does is reveal your RNG. You might think that’s too stupid to be real. Reminder, it’s sticker star.
there's no fucking way this is real oh my GOD
@@ZVAARI yes it is
lmaooooooo what a stupid fucking game
Here's something funny about the Megasparkle Goomba fight:
The Scissors are actually a solution as well. _You just didn't use it at the right time._
Which means that this game either expects you to...
A. Already know EXACTLY what Thing Sticker will be needed so you can save it during the fight.
B. Refrain from using the Thing Stickers (main form of damage) you have collected until the moment to use the correct one pops up.
C. Run away or DIE during your first encounter and then return with the Thing Stickers you think could work.
C would seem like the most interesting option, but with how inconsistent running away is, how annoying it is to reclaim used Thing Stickers, and how the game NEVER explain this form of playing nor does it ever encourage it, this way of playing the game expects you to play is almost impossible to conceive in a blind playthrough.
Sticker Star is filled to the brim with innovative ideas for RPGs. But it is unable to encourage the behavior it wants from the player in order for this system to work due to its execution and seemingly nonexistent outside play-testing.
I feel this fr, I actually peeped this too late when making the vid cuz I was gonna talk about the scissors but didn't have enough time. It's weird cuz you can tell they thought about certain things like the levels being so small so that backtracking's made easier but then it's like.... bro I'm not really trying to back track in the first place lol
@@DonShnackyou never mention it in the video, did you play the entire without knowing about the thing shop?
This is exactly the issue with the bosses in this game. The developers some how expect you to look into a crystal ball and predict the future to know the EXACT thing you need and the EXACT moment to use it in the fight. How doe anyone think this game is good?
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182
No, no, the devs expected you to go into the fight, struggle, run, go all the way through the stage backwards, blindly guess which Thing was the right one, backtrack to find it (Probably struggling to remember which stage it was in), then go all the way through the stage again to retry the boss.
No psychic powers required!
Just absolutely soul crushing tedium...
Couldn't he just have got the fan back after using it? Am I wrong in thinking that things respawn once you don't have them anymore? I know there was a shop to buy things from later on but I could have sworn they respawned.

When trying to explain the flaws of this game to a friend, I once called this game a point-and-click game cosplaying as an RPG.
After thinking more about it, I realized that it.... wasn't a joke. Your example of the cheep-cheep "fight" being essentially the tap puzzle but with a health bar is EXACTLY what I mean by that.
Fights in this game are either trivial because you are solving them, or nearly impossible because you aren't using the "solution": You don't win or lose fights, you solve them. (Also like any shitty point-and-click game, it operates using logic that feels like what an alien would think humans could consider "logical")
What you said is literally the entire problem with this games battle system. What were the developers of this game thinking?! 🤦♂
That people were not that interested in RPG battles.
When he talked about the "External Logic Puzzles" thing, it reminded me a lot of that. And a Point and Click Game cosplaying as a turn based RPG sounds like it would be insanely cool honestly, just if it was handled better than this
I was playing Origami King the other day, and to a lesser extent I feel the same way about it. The puzzles you solve to beat the regular enemies are incredibly trivial every time you encounter a pattern more than once (and sometimes it's trivial the first time around). And if you can't figure it out, pay the Toads you've rescued a few hundred of the 10s of thousands of coins you have and they'll do the first move for you, which should make it very obvious. The bosses aren't much better either, you're just guaranteed to take damage during their pattern
its really accurate. I’ve been describing the game as a bad point and click for years
9:49
Thats funny, cuz if you call it "Horrible External Logic Puzzles", it becomes an acronym for H.E.L.P!
... which is what i'd be screaming if i had to play Sticker Star again-
Also, he technically failed the H.E.L.P. The thing that you need to one shot the Goomba king is the scissors, not the fan.

So I wanna mention this about the door stickers. They can be used to guarantee an escape from battle. (This was brought up by Chuggaconroy when he played the game)

@@JoloAITSFI did too
When it comes to boss fights, Kersti is like your mom:
She's proud of you for doing the job, but she wishes her kid would do the job smarter next time.
HAHAHAH I like this perspective
At least she's proud
10:11 Those types of puzzles are called “moon logic” puzzles. Basically overly complex logic with no real common sense to it.
If you ever played a point-and-click adventure, then you’ve seen a good bit of them
omg the battle system is literally a point and click game isn't it?
Yeah its also alternatively called "bad puzzle design" as well.
if I remember correctly it's called Moon Logic because in a P&C game in a moon area if you didn't collect a completely optional item 2 hours ago you had to completely reset your game, if you saved after you had your chance to get it
it works fine in a pc point-n-click game where you try everything with anything; especially if every object has its own failure animation. The logic isn't always great but the solutions usually made sense and make you say "ohhhh, of course". Anyone remember Machinarium or Dont escape 3?
@@lotus_flower2001 long as the failure state is a simple animation and not instant death, i know rpg maker horror games have a terrible habit of requiring random interactions to progress while also having those same random interactions randomly kill you forcing you to spam saves after each room.
circling back to sticker star i'd say the point and click battle system has the same kinda issue like with the fish hook specifically, combining moon logic with a healthbar making you waste even more time refighting to test new stickers only for backtracking to be required to simply not die.
i love these types of videos/serieses where someone plays a bad game and at the start they’re like “eww, this games so bad” and just not taking it seriously in the slightest, but by the end they actually had some fun and grow to respect the game.
another series that’s like this is Kwite’s Minecraft: Story Mode series
Fun fact: If you have the Infinijump in the second half of the Bowser fight before using Kersti, you can dish out 100 damage to him right off the bat before even using Kersti!
Meaning if you have two of them and a jump that's immune to spikes, you can deal around 205 damage before the actual final boss battle even STARTS!
Bowser is spiky though. You can't jump on him.
@@stephenfiler3204 the arms.
I actually beat him without Kirsty using using four infinite jumps and a ton of iron jumps
My favorite detail is seeing your printer start running out of ink towards the end, symbolic of my thinning patience with this game
11:06 Kersti will also criticize you even if you did a fight MORE EFFECTIVELY than the intended way because it only checks for the one specific way it set up
When the water gun exists there isn't really a reason to use the thing it wants you to use.
Honestly, I like that the system is limited. It really adds onto the fact that Kersti is a jerk who can only see one solution, and the fact that you can use other things or the Water Gun is probably one of the only ways to subvert her railroading.
And I mean that Kersti is monomanical in everything she does. Randomly forcing Mario to repair the Sticker Star because she was nearby her, criticizing the usage of stickers that are not the intended path, thinking that she was important enough to sacrifice herself because it gave Mario the supposedly needed five-move turn, demanding Mario rescue her right away when they fall into the spider trap.
Ironically, I think Kersti is a good fit for the Sticker Star. If the Sticker Star is some sort of subversive genie-wishing-granter, having a shitty partner like her makes sense. The Sticker Star does not grant wishes, it grants wishes based off of Kersti’s self-centered, cynical, monomaniacal outlook. It would work if she was not just a caretaker of the comet but the Sticker Star is certainly not a good comet.
Don’s printer has had more use in this 1 video than every printer in the world in the past 3 years
This video cost 2.5 billion dollars to make. (In printer ink)

Chuggaconroy: running away is a viable strategy! YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME

honestly, PMSS is the one post-trilogy Paper Mario game that's really hard to defend
one of the main things of note is the fact that there's puzzles but there's hardly any clues pointing to them, looking back as a kid, I remember pretty much the entire game looking up walkthroughs; thought this game was supposed to be marketed towards kids?
oh yeah! can't forget the Kamek fight where all your stickers are turned into slippers and you don't know if you've wasted any good ones until afterwards
No wonder why i have never beaten the game when i was a kid, especially those required secret areas
Wait, did you not know about the black market Toad next to the Sling a Thing shop that lets you rebuy Thing items, or was not using him part of the challenge
Simple. Based on various points in the video, & a clear preference for classic Paper Mario, I can definitively say he's playing first time blind with a guide.
The game doesn't tell you about him unless you try to sling a thing when you don't have any things.
You literally aren't told about it unless you deliberately try to do something you already know you can't.
Also I don't blame him for running back to the fan those things are pretty expensive a minute ain't that bad
4:06 "Three Goombas, a Bowser Jr., three Goombas...and five Goombas-" I'm dead.

Honestly, so many bad decisions are made it sort of is postmodern in a way. What sincerely makes a good game. What combines to make a good game. Why point-and-click adventures are gone from the landscape and why they should never be brought back.

I wonder if anyone told The Don about using a door sticker in the mansion allows him to buy any previously used things and makes going out to find the again irrelevant.
I actually really liked the map and world design in Sticker Star, it's too bad the battles were terrible to the point where I needed to find a specific sticker in some back alley house in order to progress the game
Also already love the style of this video with the actual pieces of paper! Really cool

The plot was also uninspired and boring as well which dose not help this game.
@@joanrm3918 Everyone got stuck on something stupid in this game as a kid. I remember getting confused on how to get the bowling ball.
I did not get stuck on anything as a kid because I had a walkthrough fresh in my mind save the Enigmamansion puzzle where the solution was swapping walls to gain access to a greenhouse. Silly goober goose, you’re supposed to use the scissors to cut the mega sparkle goombas apart.
Edit: you have to use the spike helmet on the big cheep cheep fight! I’m still not sure if it’s perfectible, but IIRC it kills the cheep cheep instantly.
My man
Nuh uh, here's what you do. You go to 1-5 and put a sticker with paperize in a block to upgrade it until you get infinijump, then you jump 90 times and done XD (ik its inefficient but that was what my past kid self decided was best when doing a thingless no hit run)
You can't beat it without it going in the water and using fishhook. Even if you do 90 damage it won't die, it just jumps in the water immediately.
You can actually perfect the Cheep Cheep battle, but you need a sticker that does high enough damage, the fish hook Thing, and then a spike helmet (when you have a few health upgrades). That’s right, you have to engage with every forsaken mechanic (collecting everything randomly, three turns by slots, unintuitive OHKOs, unknown timed hits, etc.). You also do it in that order or else you struggle in this battle.
@@joanrm3918You can get infinijump before world 4?!
The worst part of the story is that Kirsti doesn’t stay dead.
It would have been hilarious to know that Kersti needlessly sacrificed herself thinking she needed to give Mario five turns. It is the best way to end the farce of a game.

This guy's writing is unironically much funnier than PMSS, which isnt much of a high mark but still

It increases damage and first strike in origami king, I assume that he confused the mechanics
A misconception is not the same thing as a lie.
Also, Chugga never said it increased base attack. He specifically mentioned first striking (and it defeating enemies in the overworld if the strike would kill them in battle).

EDIT: Also I’m glad you use Death Road to Canada music. Great game.
I'm unironically playing the game right now, just got the final crown too 😭😭😭
Ay it's all good, watch til the ending you'll see how I feel about it : )
@@DonShnack For sticker star being my first paper mario game, I do think it's a solid game but as a paper mario game, it's lacking for being different to the rest. Solid video as per usual Don 😌
@@3rdBarcodesame, Sticker Star was actually my first paper Mario game too and I feel the same about the difference between the rest of paper Mario games other than color splash
I love your work because of how much effort you put into it. I'm surprised this hasn't blown up yet. Best of luck
Ive played through Sticker Star once, and I forced myself to never use things unless required. I enjoyed myself more playing this way than i did any other time i tried playing this game.
I love your videos so much dude...
7:03 it was already funny and then you hit us with the YIPPEE and it became perfect
I could be wrong about this, but I think it WAS Sniffit or Whiffit originally, and you could also just cheat the Kamek flip flop fights by losing/running away, and then just coming back with actual attacks, since I think they only change your stickers once. Maybe they decided to actually change that later though?
It's snifit or whiffit in the US of A but for the Brits it's Hit it or Sniffit
I fucking love your editing style, please never change
I love the paper visuals, big don move there, tastin rather sweet
Glad to see Mario too has mastered the secret Joestar technique.
OMG IS THAT A MF JOJO REFERENCE 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥
38:34 oh look it's vernias
The vernnation
In minor defense of this game, the money you get at the end of the level is directly influenced by the enemies you kill in that level. Its why you will get an absurd amount of coin after 4-3.
Now the game doesn't actually tell you this which is the issue lol.
The "Lucky!" sound playing while a "⤴very autistic" label is placed on the self proclaimed Paper Mario expert really got me LMAO
“Why even fight, see all these coins I just got at the end of the stage!”
Nobody tell him the amount of coins you get at the end depends on the amount of battles you finish.
Games dont need exp to incentivise battles, but they do need something (idk though i love modern games because i dont have to waste my time battling, especially because they are more like puzzle games than rpgs)
When I realized that they were more puzzles over rpgs it was the biggest brain blast of my life lol. It's interesting cuz most reviews (including the first half of this vid lol) treat this game with like RPG criteria
True, but it really dose not help that SS dose not give you any incentives to fight.
The issue is that like literally everything here it is half-baked. You can whittle them down with attacks, and you can also take the easy route. But they incentivize to take the easy route but having Kersti mock you, but it is not required to beat any fight because if you run low on stickers you can always get stickers by attacking the monsters in the battle.
@@iantaakalla8180 yeah i agree that the biggest problem with the newer games in general are the game not even trying to give you a reason to battle enemies
The Thing Sticker needed for the Megasparkle Goomba fight is the Scissors, which the game never tells ya, and it only “works as intended” when the Megasparkle Goomba is flipped around so you can see all the Goombas who make him up
Both the scissors and fan work. I actually did try the scissors during the fight but my timing was off lol
@@DonShnackTruly, just another problem with the game. Even if you have the correct thing, you can use it too early and then "oops it's all gone!"
@@DonShnack Fan’s an option? I’ve never in my life have used the Fan, because I’ve been told by nearly every video and online source have said that the Scissors was the “required” Thing for Megasparkle Goomba
W VIDEO AS ALWAYS I’M SO GLAD I GOT TO WATCH THIS VIDEO AT LAST AND I LOVED IT SO MUCH KEEP IT UP DON SHNACK THE GOAT
Im like, addicted to this video style. Its like, funny and vibrant but it doesnt feel forced or too much, it just feels like someone sharing an experience they had in a fun, energetic manner. And i mean, if it can make sticker star look fun, it's gotta be good
I love this game near and dear to my heart but i still respect your opinion
I loving these videos Don they always make me laugh and im always surprised with how creative they too especially this one with using paper in the paper mario video and your jokes are pretty funny as well keep up the effort man you go far and do great things man love ya.
Mob Stonks are hittin' the moon with this one
As a Dry Bones fan, I feel very appreciated. Thank you. :)
My biggest hot take is I love Sticker Star than Color Splash and Origami King but the first 4 games I love so much
Well its better then saying SS is better then TTYD.
I mean, it is valid. Sticker Star is a horrible game, but it is consistently horrible. It never once shows signs of being a good game. Color Splash and The Origami King have something but being tethered to Sticker Star weigh it down, namely, good humor and what could have been the most tragic Mario story since Super Paper Mario.
@@iantaakalla8180Fr I LOVE Origami King but the whole weapons as items and lack of XP are pretty terribly executed and my biggest gripes with the game, which are tropes that Sticker Star started (that’s fun to say)
The fucking "oh no a fight oh god"
Hard cut to fan of doom
Is perhaps my favorite recurring joke lmao
I'd def watch a SPM video
29:56 its stuff like having a shoutout to simpleflips followed immediately by a reference to the baseball minigame that keeps me coming back
Bro the Micheal cera hate is crazy at 4:55 like what did bro do
LMAO I LOVE MICHAEL CERA. But he tight casted as the pussy character in movies and stuff you feel me?
Yeah kinda understandable
The Don's sense of humour just gets me I've been in shambles half this video
Paper Mario comparing to movies of how good they are:
Paper Mario 64: Kung Fu Panda 1
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario: Kung Fu Panda 2 & 3
Paper Mario Sticker Star, Color Splash and Origami King: Kung Fu Panda 4
This is Origami King slander it's the best game in the series
Are you high? Super Paper Mario is the best in the series alongside TTYD and it’s not even close
@@ToyWizKid987 Bro is high, but he is not as high as the people who think Sticker star is the best Paper Mario game.
@@ProjectionProjects2.7182 well here’s the thing, my hot take is I love Sticker Star but I don’t think it’s that amazing enough to be considered one of the best although it’s in my top 3
1st: Super Paper Mario
2nd: Thousand Year Door
3rd: Sticker Star
I enjoyed the first 4 games but the 5th and 6th I do not care for
@@ToyWizKid987 Personally, I think Sticker Star is uninspired trash and a great example of how not to make an RPG. But you do you I guess.
Dang, this was incredible Don! Loved the use of all the paper props and stop motion. Was quite a treat!
just so you know mashing the A button doesn't help you run away. it just shows you the predetermined outcome if you will run or not.
so you hurt your hand for abso-f***ing-lutely no reason at all.
Interesting fact: it’s actually possible to both take no damage in the first true battle of PPSS and get a perfect bonus on the spikey goombas
Fun fact: Sticker Star was the first game I played that I didn't enjoy. I remember playing it when I was 9 or 10 or something and the pure frustration, unhappiness, confusion, boredom and hatred I felt.
Sticker Star may have introduced the idea of hopelessness to me, the "game" does SUCH a bad job at being a game that there was no way for it's target audience to progress past the first time you have to use a specific Thing to solve some dumb puzzle that has NO hints (I remember the pure frustration from trying to solve the puzzles for hours and I just couldn't, I constantly wasted stickers during battles to the point where I literally didn't have any left and couldn't do anything and essentially softlocked myself)
this game has so little respect for its audience that it refuses to believe that anybody who would play it has any thought more intelligent than realizing that circles are round, thus allowing it to be so incredibly lazy and dull because "children are stupid and anyone who enjoys Mario is stupid so we don't have to make a real game" but it isn't even fun to the more clueless, thoughtless, least experienced in life child (9 year old me) who only learned how to read like 4 years ago but still knows that whatever writing was in this game was so awful and soulless that I didn't even realize the little crown shiny floaty silver thing had a name because that character is so forgettable (just like everything else about this game which may be the reason for all global conflicts happening right now)
Also, as someone who was OBSESSED with Mario as a kid (I would wear a Mario hat and a mustache cut from black felt everywhere) I could not care less about Sticker Star. That's impressive. This game made a Mario obsessed , video game loving, autistic child just totally uninterested in a Mario game
Basically, short story long: I hate this game and everybody else should too. There needs to be more hate in the world, specifically aimed towards Paper Mario Sticker Star. I literally cannot describe in text how boring, useless, pointless, and dumb this game is and how I felt about it. I think Sticker Star being a terrible game is one of my formative memories, I don't remember anything good from the game, just how unfair and pointless its entire mechanic was and how it made the game absolute trash. This game isn't even good for CHILDREN, there is no way that anyone who has developed past the age of 2 would be able to enjoy it.
I wish I could express my pure hatred in a more effective way
Also side note, this game made me think I hated ALL traditional RPG style Paper Mario Games (I loved Super Paper Mario, and I loved both the Mario&Luigi Games for the DS. I played all of those games, and a lot more obviously, before Sticker Star and I could not have been more obsessed with them. Sticker Star made me think that games like Paper Mario 64 and The Thousand Year Door would be terrible and I am so sad about that because after TTYD remake came out I am actually in love with it. TTYD is such a good game and it might be one of my favorite games which is crazy because of how terrible Sticker Star, a game in the SAME series, is.)
btw great video! this hate comment is not towards the video, the editing, commentary, gameplay (despite it barely being a game) were all great, i just forgot how much I loved hating on things
EDIT: guys i wrote this at 3am and was bored and just wanted to hate on sticker star. it's a bad game but if you enjoy it good for you! i just hated it and it isn't a well designed game, but i love plenty of poorly designed games, it's ok don't take this comment too seriously
“There needs to be more hate in the world, specifically towards this game” JESUS MAN CHILL
I remember having a good time when I was little with this game until I got stuck in World 2 and 3. I beat when older and have done it two more times. I had a good time and think that it gets better every time you play it again because you learn the game. It has its downsides but besides Bowser and some thing locations, the problems can be planned for or forgiven.
7.5-8.5/10 for me, but I have my opinion and you have yours. I just wish there was less hate, not that some isn't warranted, but there's too much hate. Also, just to clear my name a bit I also got Sonic and the Secret Rings around the same age, also got stuck and have less fond memories besides the music and party mode. I have gone back a few times, still dislike it besides party mode (even then it's less fun without other wiimotes (guess who that is)), and have never beaten it a single time. I might try to fix that later, though.
this is my favorite comment ever I think
@@tobdog6224 That's awesome! I'm genuinely glad you enjoyed the game. tbh I wrote this comment at 3am and was very bored and I think it's funny to overly hate things. I still don't like the game and feel it doesn't respect the intelligence of its audience, but it does have interesting ideas and I think stickers are cool, but the execution is bad
I barely think about Sticker Star, it's just forgettable to me
But when I do think about it, I think about getting stuck in worlds 2/3 and getting frustrated and just bored and feeling like the game had no direction
@@mercurylawson I feel you, happened to me too.
So the most optimal way to play this game is to use the Joseph Joester technique of running away...awesome.
