My university uses pretty much every other animation program except SFM, all of which I hate. 3DS Max, Maya, Unity, they all suck. I wish they would incorporate a class teaching us how to use SFM. But I guess that would be too complicated since you need Steam to use it and that would just tempt students to play games in class.
My mind is full of film ideas but im too stupid to understand how this program works.. this is so hard looking and my mind can't catch up what his doing on the video.. damn.. i guess i never can make awesome movies.. they are trapped in my brain forever.
I started using SFM today and I'm handling it pretty easily. But being able to get the hang of the program without any hitches was reliant on me having a year's worth of experience in After Effects. My point is that having trouble with the interface is going to be something that happens to most people, but the more time you spend using it, the easier it'll get

For the ppl who got stuck at 36:00. The reason u cant make a smooth transition is because you applied the change before finishing what you were doing. Remove the zoom you made, make a new one, and don't hit enter until you have held down shift and scrolled mousewheel to make a transition. Then you can save the manipulation.
I remember when I was like 10 or 11 getting up at 5 am to watch this video and TRY to make an animation, I'm 13 now, and I could barely understand everything because my first language isn't English, I still can't do an animation so my goal right now is to do one :D

I don't understand how you guys managed to get anything done with this. I spent 2 hours trying to get a character's outfit lined up correctly. I tried to bind the two transform nodes together, the same effect works in Maya and motion builder and UE3/UE4, but in SFM everything was off-set slightly so I still had to spend ages tweaking. There are no precision transform or movement tools. everything is counter intuitive and the camera movement has the strange feeling of 'sliding on ice' I can see the potential but you guys were obviously on acid when you set up half of this shit.
People call it source spaghetti, but I think your doing whatever you trying to do wrong, the official Sfm tutorial I’ve heard isn’t the best one, but yeah.

Well, like most people, I was following him pretty well, but now I'm screwed and need help. I've got a bunch of cuts with this blue scout running. I'm being the red scout and trying to chase him. But when record with the red scout about to chase him while recording, It stops after the first camera shot. I tried selecting all shots before recording, putting the playhead in different places, but it stills stop recording after that first camera shot. What do I do?!??!
this is a very powerful tool. But a word of advice that is going to sound weird. anything that is "Once you get the hang of it" Is not intuitive. For something to be intuitive it needs to be so obvious that you don't think about it. A good example is catching a ball. you see it, you do it, you don't think. In my opinion, If you want this to be intuitive then its interface would need a serious facelift. It would probably have to step away from FPS game actions and film actions (At least aesthetically), discarding most of the jargon and re-framing things as a sandbox or game board setup where the creator takes a more third person view in action. Setup and the actual timeline would also probably have to be treated as two separate staging areas. they don't have to be actually two areas, but by breaking up the work flow and providing the tools for one or the other independently you allow people to train themselves on how to think about how to set up the tasks. they could still be switched back and forth and even be used in parallel but as two distinct areas (Think of this as a basic mode, and the current layout as a Pro mode) it compartmentalizes the learning into two small curves not one large one. While this is not completely intuitive, it is more intuitive and in collaborative works it allows people to have distinct specializations.

Well TF2 is the base thing for SFM but you can still make other videos with different games like HL,Portal,etc. if you want new models you can use the Workshop for new stuff to work with

You should start out with a more simple program rather than SFM. If you get used to that, then go back to SFM. Then you'll understand more of what he was talking about, because shortcuts are more commonly found in other animation tools too! Hope this helped c:

+Leebles There are other guides out there to learn the basics of 3d softwares. Heck, if you want to have a little knowledge of 3d elements, start with Blender. It's free, it's not powerful but it's easy to learn. Then, after you've learned how to use Blender then you will find sfm much easier or rather easier to grasp the concepts.

He says "press Numpad-5". That is not the default qwerty key. You need to press *dot* "." in order to open the team-selection menu You need to press *comma* "," in order to open the character-selection menu
I'm trying to make a simple TF2 animation but the only progress I made so far was that I made some sequences work. I'm trying to make a Scout, Medic and Demo run but it's so freakin hard
For some reason I can't load a map... I right click and click on load map. Then I choose the map and the red giant letters is saying LOADING MAP... And when it's loaded the screen is just black and not the map I chose. But when I click on F11 the character is in the map, but It's still black so I don't know where I move the camera. Help!

Ata Sancaktar Does anyone have a text version of this? I just hate video tutorials, what takes an hour and 15 minutes here could be explained in 30 minutes of text tutorial, especially without all the "we worked on blockbusters blablabla, but the SFM is so much better" stuff.

Well, like most people, I was following him pretty well, but now I'm screwed and need help. I've got a bunch of cuts with this blue scout running. I'm being the red scout and trying to chase him. But when record with the red scout about to chase him while recording, It stops after the first camera shot. I tried selecting all shots before recording, putting the playhead in different places, but it stills stop recording after that first camera shot. What do I do?!??!

this is a very powerful tool.
But a word of advice that is going to sound weird.
anything that is "Once you get the hang of it"
Is not intuitive.
For something to be intuitive it needs to be so obvious that you don't think about it.
A good example is catching a ball. you see it, you do it, you don't think.
In my opinion, If you want this to be intuitive then its interface would need a serious facelift.
It would probably have to step away from FPS game actions and film actions (At least aesthetically), discarding most of the jargon and re-framing things as a sandbox or game board setup where the creator takes a more third person view in action.
Setup and the actual timeline would also probably have to be treated as two separate staging areas. they don't have to be actually two areas, but by breaking up the work flow and providing the tools for one or the other independently you allow people to train themselves on how to think about how to set up the tasks.
they could still be switched back and forth and even be used in parallel but as two distinct areas (Think of this as a basic mode, and the current layout as a Pro mode) it compartmentalizes the learning into two small curves not one large one. While this is not completely intuitive, it is more intuitive and in collaborative works it allows people to have distinct specializations.

Is this only for TF2 ? or can I use GMOD?
Well TF2 is the base thing for SFM but you can still make other videos with different games like HL,Portal,etc. if you want new models you can use the Workshop for new stuff to work with

SFM is for other stuff then tf2 as well, tf2 is just one of the popular games to make SFM's on.

Well, my extremely vague advice is that you start small, really small; watch other people's SFMs for inspiration/motivation, take breaks and become a friend of forums.
lulucool45 no not that. I mean there are missing textures, i can't find out how to move around to other places in the map, I don't know how to safe a picture or Video, i don't know how to take a picture to animate it, and i don't know how to get the FNaF 4 map to open.

You should start out with a more simple program rather than SFM. If you get used to that, then go back to SFM. Then you'll understand more of what he was talking about, because shortcuts are more commonly found in other animation tools too! Hope this helped c:

To be honest..this official thing is so much more better than all the other SFM tutorials other RUclips’s give, now don’t get me wrong their pretty nice, is just prefer something that sounds more then enough simple, but I’d also prefer some that is an absolute expert and one thing, so thanks mate for this

+Leebles There are other guides out there to learn the basics of 3d softwares.
Heck, if you want to have a little knowledge of 3d elements, start with Blender. It's free, it's not powerful but it's easy to learn. Then, after you've learned how to use Blender then you will find sfm much easier or rather easier to grasp the concepts.

Obs! There is a difference in default shortcut-keys and those used in the tutorial.
You will be stuck at ruclips.net/video/xG02JftoiLU/видео.html -That is where he adds a red opponent. He says "press Numpad-5". That is not the default qwerty key.
You need to press *dot* "." in order to open the team-selection menu

For some reason I can't load a map... I right click and click on load map. Then I choose the map and the red giant letters is saying LOADING MAP... And when it's loaded the screen is just black and not the map I chose. But when I click on F11 the character is in the map, but It's still black so I don't know where I move the camera. Help!
