If your just getting into sfm this video will help with that. However after a little while if your looking for further advancements in your sfm skill set, my channel does so happen to have a ton more info than this one gives on lighting, composition, posing and more. Also my more recent videos are better looking so yea.
That's actually a huge misconception about FOV. High FOV's can be useful and only certain shots can be achieved with a High FOV rather than a low one. It all depends on the aspect ratio of your movie. High FOV + wider aspect ratio(2.39:1) = less vertical distortion = epic awesome wide screen shots. High FOV + standard aspect ratio(4:3) = more vertical distortion = crappy distorted shit pile.
I dont even do anything sfm, but I watched all the way to the end cx. It is a really entertaining video, even to people who are oblivious to anything that's happening in the video (like me!)
One more thing to increase the quality of your picture in terms of resolution! When exporting as Movie/ Image Sequence, you will notice that the max quality you can select is 720p. To increase that, go into the launch options and type -sfm_resolution 1080 (or 2160 respectively) and you'll be able to get that sweet full HD or 4k. As opposed to posters though, you cannot use any other resolution above 720p other than 1080p or 4k, else the export will be entirely black.
I watched your video like years ago and "Use the spine bones to make it look good" stuck with me until I had a computer capable of running sfm. Now everythong seems so easy for me to learn and to put into practise. You basically put everything I learned through other videos into this one and it's well done. Thanks a lot, dude
Yo, thank you so much for thus! I'm just starting out in making SFM posters, specifically for Splatoon, and this really helps me see what I have to work on... mostly lights and camera details. I appreciate this a lot 👌🏾
Really helpful! Anything you said about 'new sfm'ers' I would look at the stuff I would normally make and just agree, my work has improved alot thanks to you, please make more!
"But if you export it as a poster, it removes all the bloom in it" So THAT'S why my rendered images felt like they were missing something, thanks for mentioning!
This is the stuff Rookies Should to as a former sfm youtuber (atm) I'm glad a person like ur vid exist it goes to show my sfm skills were still here even when I had a long hiatus of sfm Thk u so much for ur guidance
Thx Steg, I knew lighting was important and all (I am currently in my third year of vid production) and i wanted to get into SFM a bit, this helped a lot
You know I was in a film class that we made short films irl, and we always went by the “rule of thirds” which is the 9 square box you find on your phone’s camera, or sfm if you activate it.
there is a reason i don't sfm for images. gmod may be an ass for posing sometimes, but atleast i don't feel like a cretin with brain disfunction trying to remember the most unintuitive shit ever.
well I have been doing SFM for about a year and a half and some stuff in this video I did not know about o.o so thanks a lot for this! now I can start doing my stuff better and better! thanks for this video!
Ahhh fuck, this is pretty advanced. I've always been a big fan of SFM and always been wanting to learn how to use it and all, but it's way too complicated. But awesome video as usual Steg, your videos never fail to entertain me.
Hey thanks man. Ive been doing digital 2D for a while and have been playing with sfm lately. This helped alot. I couldnt really find information on little nuances like, being able to change model colors with material override, that you are even able scale the model, thought I was stuck with default sizes of environment props; nor that you were capable of moving a light similar to a camera
I still export my posters as a poster, but I add bloom later in photoshop with Magic Bullet, but I did not know about going into the camera in the element viewer to increase the quality of Depth of Field, thanks!
You should do a video where you take a few really bad SFM posters, say what's bad about them in particular, and remake them yourself and see how well you can do!
This actually was pretty good! I'm just getting into it. I select a map, but it won't load the map, it shows the loading icon but when fully loaded it doesn't load the map at all. Anyway this was pretty helpful and the music was from BattleBlock Theater. NICE MUSIC.
Nice tutorial man, i am an experienced sfmer myself and i gotta say you touched on topics that other tutorials havent and i think this is the best one on RUclips so far.
I don't know. You say there are some pretty dull tutorials out there, but I feel Argodaemon does a pretty decent job at explaining it... Even if it involves ponies.
Not many people realize this, but what you're actually doing is projecting thoughts through yor work. Tus, the right kind of attitude towards your projected thought is needed in order for you to do things right. If you're unaware of what you're doing, or if you rely on rules more than actually projecting your thoughts, your work will show, and it may not be able to properly shine, as the result. You either need to see your projected thoughts as the very forms of truth they are (since thoughts can only exist when considered such), or you need to believe them to be representations of the actual thing. Valve has the latter attitude towards the thoughts projected through their work. Works done with either of those two attitudes tend to be associated with quality. Cade in point, the 2016 Extended Saxxt winner, a Half Lfe 2-related short called "Reinstated: The Arrival", was made by someone who truly saw their projected thoughts as reprrsentations of the actual thing.
Thank you for making this! sfm was so hard to understand before this was made! though i would like to know how to get missing cosmetic models on the character. i want to make a medic poster with the ward and a brush with death
If your just getting into sfm this video will help with that. You should mention that SFM cameras, by default, have an atrociously high FOV, and often look far better at their default FOV.
That's actually a huge misconception about FOV. High FOV's can be useful and only certain shots can be achieved with a High FOV rather than a low one. It all depends on the aspect ratio of your movie.

Oris tv. yeah
Oris tv thanks man. That means a lot to me
This has got to be one of the best tutorials on SFM that is available on here that isn't 25 minutes long and all over the place.

Right click the black screen(where it says no map loaded), and you should see an option that says "Load Map". Then just look up the map you want.
Ctrl L

How I pose characters is I do them myself, take a picture, and use the photo as a reference.
I just got goosebumps when i heard the first few notes of the song, god damn that opened up a bank of memories
Watching this now, I agree Lighting is the thing that gets me stuck as a beginner.
From all of the tutorials i saw for sfm this is the best so far thanks steg
about 1000 hours in SFM. I had no idea volume lighting was a supported thing. Best day ever.

I did not absorb absolutely any of this whatsoever, but I will continue to use SFM while telling myself I know what I'm doing now.

This video is my go-to referral when every sfm artists asks for feedback on reddit
for a more detailed light composition use a nice mix of difused objects in the backround aswell as using a three point light
You know I was in a film class that we made short films irl, and we always went by the “rule of thirds” which is the 9 square box you find on your phone’s camera, or sfm if you activate it.
I knew a helluva lot of this, as I have 170 hours, but some of this actually REALLY helped me.
Wow. Even being a more experienced SFM user, I learned so many tricks I had never known previously. Thanks for such a useful and concise video!
i started like 10+ days ago ive got the hang of the basics and a few stuff but sfm is great and just fun to create posters and movies
Wow this was a really great video! So glad it popped up in my recommendations.
there is a reason i don't sfm for images.
gmod may be an ass for posing sometimes, but atleast i don't feel like a cretin with brain disfunction trying to remember the most unintuitive shit ever.
general riot on god bro like wtf is some of this shit
I had no ideas about the Alt control on the camera or quality settings.

THANK YOU FOR SHOWING ME VOLUMETRIC LIGHTING also you are a Really good at sfm
The ost from battleblock Theater gives me nostalgia
One of the best tutorials out there! I made a really nice looking sexy poster and it was my first time!!!

I usually use ik rig for a certain standing pose, then switch for the default rig for upper body when I’m done with the legs/feet
this is a really good tutorial and I think that it can help get more people familiar with sfm. -ETR animations
you son of a....
my life would've been much easier if you uploaded this a year earlier!
I still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
Steg is scared of Bonnies on the thumbnails XD 0:33
I still export my posters as a poster, but I add bloom later in photoshop with Magic Bullet, but I did not know about going into the camera in the element viewer to increase the quality of Depth of Field, thanks!
I wish I didn't forget how to move the models limbs.
You could also type -sfm_resolution 1080 -w 1920 -h 1080 into your startup commands to export in 1080p
You should do a video where you take a few really bad SFM posters, say what's bad about them in particular, and remake them yourself and see how well you can do!
dang, if only you uploaded this video before i uploaded my awful videos
ur making new sfm makers feel bad

Just give it time. If your pc is slow, it might even show SFM as freezing. You just gotta wait a bit
You've helped me so much dude I just got into sfm thanks bro
Being awful would be an improvement...
Wait, this is a tutorial for people who are awful...? I need more...
this is better than most tutorials I've seen...
now I know how to get more than 8 lights...
:P
Thanks for the tutorial man i've been wondering how to move libs but i didn't realise that you have to change the timelime
meanwhile I still can't figure out how to spawn an entity
i like how he said he was gonna do the basics but he never tells us how to make a camera or spawn a model
This is actually really good
I normally use 126 because holy hell it takes long to export beyond that
>people use more than 3 lights to light a single character
