- Yea this tutorial is a basic one. Pretty much because of high demand. Also I'm not trying to be harsh to anyone just in case anyone thinking that. I just explained some of my view points in what I hope was in a entertaining fashion. Anyway, if you are new to sfm, after you digest this video and do some practice I recommend checking out my other tutorials.

If your just getting into sfm this video will help with that. However after a little while if your looking for further advancements in your sfm skill set, my channel does so happen to have a ton more info than this one gives on lighting, composition, posing and more. Also my more recent videos are better looking so yea.

You should mention that SFM cameras, by default, have an atrociously high FOV, and often look far better at their default FOV.
That's actually a huge misconception about FOV. High FOV's can be useful and only certain shots can be achieved with a High FOV rather than a low one. It all depends on the aspect ratio of your movie.
High FOV + wider aspect ratio(2.39:1) = less vertical distortion = epic awesome wide screen shots.
High FOV + standard aspect ratio(4:3) = more vertical distortion = crappy distorted shit pile.

I dont even do anything sfm, but I watched all the way to the end cx. It is a really entertaining video, even to people who are oblivious to anything that's happening in the video (like me!)
One more thing to increase the quality of your picture in terms of resolution!
When exporting as Movie/ Image Sequence, you will notice that the max quality you can select is 720p. To increase that, go into the launch options and type -sfm_resolution 1080 (or 2160 respectively) and you'll be able to get that sweet full HD or 4k. As opposed to posters though, you cannot use any other resolution above 720p other than 1080p or 4k, else the export will be entirely black.
I watched your video like years ago and "Use the spine bones to make it look good" stuck with me until I had a computer capable of running sfm. Now everythong seems so easy for me to learn and to put into practise. You basically put everything I learned through other videos into this one and it's well done. Thanks a lot, dude

Right click the black screen(where it says no map loaded), and you should see an option that says "Load Map". Then just look up the map you want.

Hey thanks man. Ive been doing digital 2D for a while and have been playing with sfm lately. This helped alot. I couldnt really find information on little nuances like, being able to change model colors with material override, that you are even able scale the model, thought I was stuck with default sizes of environment props; nor that you were capable of moving a light similar to a camera
well I have been doing SFM for about a year and a half and some stuff in this video I did not know about o.o
so thanks a lot for this!

Watching this now, I agree Lighting is the thing that gets me stuck as a beginner.
How I pose characters is I do them myself, take a picture, and use the photo as a reference.

i started like 10+ days ago ive got the hang of the basics and a few stuff but sfm is great and just fun to create posters and movies
Nice tutorial man, i am an experienced sfmer myself and i gotta say you touched on topics that other tutorials havent and i think this is the best one on RUclips so far.
This is a fun tutorial to watch, even if I don't use SFM
for a more detailed light composition use a nice mix of difused objects in the backround aswell as using a three point light

I usually use ik rig for a certain standing pose, then switch for the default rig for upper body when I’m done with the legs/feet

I did not absorb absolutely any of this whatsoever, but I will continue to use SFM while telling myself I know what I'm doing now.

You know I was in a film class that we made short films irl, and we always went by the “rule of thirds” which is the 9 square box you find on your phone’s camera, or sfm if you activate it.

I still export my posters as a poster, but I add bloom later in photoshop with Magic Bullet, but I did not know about going into the camera in the element viewer to increase the quality of Depth of Field, thanks!

I normally use 126 because holy hell it takes long to export beyond that
You could also type -sfm_resolution 1080 -w 1920 -h 1080 into your startup commands to export in 1080p
You should do a video where you take a few really bad SFM posters, say what's bad about them in particular, and remake them yourself and see how well you can do!
This actually was pretty good! I'm just getting into it. I select a map, but it won't load the map, it shows the loading icon but when fully loaded it doesn't load the map at all. Anyway this was pretty helpful and the music was from BattleBlock Theater. NICE MUSIC.
Just give it time. If your pc is slow, it might even show SFM as freezing. You just gotta wait a bit
there is a reason i don't sfm for images.
gmod may be an ass for posing sometimes, but atleast i don't feel like a cretin with brain disfunction trying to remember the most unintuitive shit ever.

Dear Steg, thank you for the lighting tutorial and this really helped me because no other tutorial explained anything of that nature, but I'm curious if you're able to explain .vmt, .vtf and .mdl because after I've imported some models from Gmod from the Neurotec mod and specifically the WWII Tanks, if you could help me solve this issue of most the models not loading I would greatly appreciate it and could help other source importers that run into this issue in SFM
