If you found this video helpful, you prob would get a kick out of my other sfm videos where I talk about things like posing, shapes, effects, and other neat stuff.
I'm new to SFM and personally I found lighting to be the WORST pain. I literally had no clue how to set it correctly until I found your tutorial. Thanks man!
I might have rushed a few parts lol, but I hope the wait was worth it. Also Im planning on working on a few fun ideas in my head soon so hopefully you guys might see an increase in uploads about soonish for a little bit at least.
Steg Linear and Quadratic attenuation basically controls how sharp your light is, why it increases intensity is because the change in brightness suddenly becomes steep. Why is there linear and quadratic? It's more for fine tuning how much the light drops after the increase in radius.
Constant Attenuation can come in handy sometimes when trying to make a light that's supposed to be the sun in a really big scene since it doesn't have any falloff. You can also use it to create a giant fill light by simply locking it onto the camera. This will then basically allow you to adjust the color of all the shadows in your scene. I hope this somewhat made sense. :P
@steg your response to the Radius slider was "hmmm" which implies you don't know what it does. it actually does something very useful. the radius determines how smoothly shadows blend out into light. but, this change is only visible in the clip overlay, which makes a pre-render of the scene. press f2 to quickly go into the clip editor to see how the radius affects your pieces
The radius slider can be used to make the further shadows more blurred. You can see this irl by standing outside on a sunny day and looking at the difference between the shadows of your feet and lower legs and the shadow of your head. For the light radius to be seen in SFM, you need to have DoF samples turned on and to either render or prerender. :)
Really appreciate this video! I just got into making posters and stuff in sfm and I know practically nothing about lighting in sfm! So thanks, it helped a lot.
Constant Attenuation means the light never drops off no matter the range. Linear Attenuation means the light drops off at a linear rate, like a straight decline from 100 to 0. Quadratic means an exponential decay of intensity, basically the light will be strong and then drop off hard eventually.
Hey Steg, I am person who has been with source for a while and I am just now stepping my foot into the world of Source Filmmaker, and my first stop was some tutorial videos, so I chose yours, I hope you know, you have done me well and you deserve more subscribers, thank you so much for the videos!
i wish i could do the things you do in sfm... its laggy for me (when i try to do things with at least 4 lights and a volumetric light) and ao doesnt even work for me...
radius is only visible when previewing a render. essentially spreads out the light in a smooth an natural way, best see for fill lights or lighting a whole scene with a low base light.
I'm a little embarrassed to say this but I'm gonna say it anyway... I never knew you can just click and drag the lights to the camera. I remember it being mentioned in the original sfm tutorials by valve but I guess it didn't stick. I should start using that.
I'm working on a video right now and I only using three lights because the map is already lit up very brightly is a baseball field that I'm using so the film light I'm not really using it so I'm just going to continue with the video and see where it goes thank you anyway for this video because I was really skipping one important detail of this lighting tutorial
I literally just wanted to know how to add a light into sfm. Why could I not find it in the video? And it should be at the very start even cuz how can you do lighting if you don't know how to import it.
i'm not wasting my time a video fucking explaining HOW LIGHT IN REALLIFE WORKS! i just fucking wanted to learn how to make an ambient light cause the map i used has none and i've just started using sfm. yes i imported a light but i don't understand most of the sliders.
HOLY CRAPO dude ur sooooo good it looks like magic that poster!!! :D Amazing! I wish I could be as good as u... when I try to make a poster or movie it's just ends up being horrible ;-;
It depends on what your referring to. Its either because I exported it as a movie image so it kept the bloom. Or its some post processing effect in photoshop
If you found this video helpful, you prob would get a kick out of my other sfm videos where I talk about things like posing, shapes, effects, and other neat stuff.
:O bet
Btw your very entertaining
how do you get lights tho
stop bullying me i just came to your channel.
I'm new to SFM and personally I found lighting to be the WORST pain. I literally had no clue how to set it correctly until I found your tutorial. Thanks man!

Steg nah, you’re good
can u help with making a dark atmosphere with a map that has lights
my volumetric lights don't work is there a fix
This is the tutorial that FINALLY made me break my chain of using pre-made lightkits in my posters, thanks so much for this.
Jesus Christ I remember that contest and animation... thanks for the lighting tips tho

"Playing with your stuff until you like it"

Holy shit i had no idea you could drag lights in the viewport lmao

Yoo I watched this video until 2:38 and paused since I had class and came back thinking it was an actual sunset!
Oh wait... it is
Aww man that viewport light moving thing changes everything
Genuinely this single video helped make my second poster leagues better than my first

I learned about it a day after I made this video lol
FINALLY YESS now do a posing tutorial lmao
*t-pose intensifies*
You got what you wish for

(at least I think)
@@TurnTwister yes agreed.
Radius is the God of all sliders in sfm.

This is the most helpful 11 minutes i have used.
"just mess with it until it looks good" so just like a school project, got it
Those Lorax fem scout fingers tho
"Apparently the other two lighting tutorials weren't advanced enough for you guys"
Me, who just saw this video: :(
Well, some of the Light Settings may seem to be confusing, but nevertheless - SFM is weird, but i love it.
Constant Attenuation means the light never drops off no matter the range. Linear Attenuation means the light drops off at a linear rate, like a straight decline from 100 to 0. Quadratic means an exponential decay of intensity, basically the light will be strong and then drop off hard eventually.
*putting a character in a cave, puts on 50 rim lights*

I’m so happy to be part of the sfm community
In my opinion the sniper shot was looking perfect even before you added the 2 extra lights
This is a perfect tutorial for someone like me who is still learning how SFM works.
Dude this video is amazing i always come back here when i forget things xD
i wish i could do the things you do in sfm...
its laggy for me (when i try to do things with at least 4 lights and a volumetric light) and ao doesnt even work for me...
Get a better pc then, I used to have the same issues you did.
this helped me alot im strugling what to be a film producer or a gamer for youtube ill think about film production
Science lesson with steg
Boi u saved my posters with this light as camera thing thx
A science lesson with steg

Dude, your a god at this, you definitely earned a sub for this.
The cut off, height and others sliders works With uberlight, go to element viewer by clicking on a light and check uberlight
The SFM Wizard of lore, Steginheim.
Looks like it's time to update my notes on SFM
Huh. I just found this vid. Very nice tutorial, Steg. I'll keep this in mind when I'm doing more SFMs.
I'm a little embarrassed to say this but I'm gonna say it anyway... I never knew you can just click and drag the lights to the camera. I remember it being mentioned in the original sfm tutorials by valve but I guess it didn't stick. I should start using that.
bitch the poster is GORGEOUS!!! So much effort and thinking! Tysm for your tutorial!
You are my God in SFM poster dud uwu saludos desde Mexico :D
thank for this now i know how to light i been trying to fine others but some of them are not good sometimes...
why do all the sfm tutorials use a fem scout for demonstration?
Thanks you so much Stefanie I needed this
This is very helpful tutorial. Thank you.

Thanks for the tip!
This tutorial oddly matches with lighting in painting.
nice job though, really mean it
*sees bloom*
Steg’s discord: RREEEEEEEEEEEEE
How you change light colour?
you should make an ambient occlusion tutorial :)
i love your tutorials and they are great, keep up the good work
2:34 "im not a scientist"
I don't understand how to put a midnight light
I literally just wanted to know how to add a light into sfm. Why could I not find it in the video? And it should be at the very start even cuz how can you do lighting if you don't know how to import it.
I challenge you to zoom in just behind Demoman's eyepatch
"playing with your stuff until you like it" -steg
I can’t remember if i put the advanced option or not. Is it any way you can check it without uninstalling?
This helpeed alot!
great video! this should really help with my posters. what do you use for your 2d animations?
Very cool.
i'm not wasting my time a video fucking explaining HOW LIGHT IN REALLIFE WORKS! i just fucking wanted to learn how to make an ambient light cause the map i used has none and i've just started using sfm. yes i imported a light but i don't understand most of the sliders.
It would be amazing if you could use the rtx features in sfm
Thanks mate, trying to make a thumbnail for a tf2 video and i need this shit for lighting.

Light a fire?
BONFIRE LIT
Why is lighting not just like in hammer editor
How do you fix rainbow lights shining threw walls on the map
as a fnaf sfm'er the quadratic thing makes it darker or lighter. all i know
I'd be nice enough to wanna know how it went down. Also, thanks for the video it helps a lot.
HOLY CRAPO dude ur sooooo good it looks like magic that poster!!! :D Amazing! I wish I could be as good as u...
when I try to make a poster or movie it's just ends up being horrible ;-;
ANOTHER TUTORIAL!!!!!!
Help i was only able to drag and drop instead of see what its actually lighting
Sounds like you need another viewport window. Which should be under windows
my volumetric doesnt change anything, no matter what its on
turn it on you need to turn it on before doing anything like changing it you just right click on the light look down at the stuff and turn on vol
This was great.
He just didn't tell us how to actually add the lights.
Bruh
It's literally in the add shit menu
Why did you look up how to do lighting if you don't know how to add models
I thought this said "Lighting the Bright Way" and I thought you were making a pun. Although I suppose not.
Although, he now has an idea for renaming the video
I cant have more than 10 lights :( i dont know why
i have a question for u sfm master,
how i can get so good looking textures like your sniper hat
my looks squarely
Maybe you have ambient occlusion off?
Quick question, how do i change the camera to the light to where you can move the light around with the camera like you did threw out the video?
what about lighting a camera shot?
Thanks.
9:20 You could just remap the range for the sake of convenience lol
You're a legend
you can make the shadowed lights go up to 64 with modded files
What, you still make tutorials!? :P
what is this last thing you used at the end of the video, is it a part of SFM???
6:45i try to do the same things like you but nothing happen i need ur help
How does yours have that shine to it? Like the glow
It depends on what your referring to. Its either because I exported it as a movie image so it kept the bloom. Or its some post processing effect in photoshop
@@steg3823 ah ok
AO jitter doesn’t support on my computer so I don’t have to do extra steps
How do i make light reflections on models?
for some reason bloom, when I export, it does nothing. I can see it having an effec ton the timeline, but it does nothing when I export the poster.
You can’t get bloom with export it has to be image sequence
I wish the light would position with the camera instead of the model. It’s gotta be my Graphics card. I got a GTX 1060 6GB
but idk what to click to do the lighting
Is there a way to have your background completely dark and your foreground mostly lit. I'm still very newbie to SFM so I would like a tip or two.
Load the map void. It’s a map without anything in it. Turn off lighting to use it at first
With the volumetric setting, when I turn it on it’s just white wires, no foggy light. Could someone tell me how to fix this?
how do i lower the intensity on the lights
why do sessions weight so much? i made 20 seconds animation and its 4gb.
