Florence + The Machine - St Jude (Lyrics)
    Another conversation with no destination
    Another battle never won
And each side is a loser
So who cares who fired the gun?
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
    And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
    Letting loss reveal it
    Letting loss reveal it
St. Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St. Jude, we were lost before she started
St. Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St. Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
And I was on the island and you were there too
But somehow through the storm I couldn't get to you
    St. Jude, somehow she knew
And she came to give her blessing while causing devastation
And I couldn't keep my mouth shut, I just had to mention
    Grabbing your attention
St. Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St. Jude, we were lost before she started
St. Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St. Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
    St. Jude, St. Jude
    St. Jude, St. Jude
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
    And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
    Letting loss reveal it
    Letting loss reveal it
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
    And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
    Letting loss reveal it
    Letting loss reveal it

I've never heard Florence sound so reserved in terms of her vocal performance. The minimal production really complements this. Usually, as we all know, Florence can belt and her songs are grandiose to coincide with her elegant bravado, but here is a nice change. It shows how vulnerable and emotional you can make a song just by holding it back a little; without going all out.
I like this, needless to say.

I kept expecting her to go all out at the end but it never came. So I had to re-adjust my expectations a bit but I really like it too. It's a nice change of pace from WKOM.

***** the video is very tranquil for sure. There's a moment at the end where her voice crescendos and I thought she was about to belt but she didn't. I loved the soft hums towards the end too.

True for me as well. I can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but embracing it has helped. Chaotic people may not be the best at planning ahead, but at least we are used to improvising and can roll with the punches when life throws surprises at us.

      @Cornelia66666 9 лет назад +2

Matthrick O Well said! Stevie Nicks is a Goddes of both music and lyrics and she's a trully artistic natural performer! Personally I don't find Florence to be anywhere near Stevie's talent. It's just my oppinion. She does have some strong lyrics though, but it seems to me that she's pushing herself way too hard in her desire to express the things she has in mind and thus her art becomes forced and a little more unnatural.

Literally only just realised that this song is about the massive storm st Jude in 2013. Explains the lyrics ' she came to give her blessing whilst causing devastation' and 'we lay in bed whilst she whipped around us'. Also the video seems to be in the aftermath of a disaster ( why Florence is soaking wet), maybe it's because the storm is like the storm that's going on inside her and in her relationships, and that's why she's the only one that's wet. I don't know, I'm having late night deep thoughts haha everyone probably already figured this out months ago.

I never understood people who want their favorite artists to stay the same. You want eclectic earthy fairy goddess, go listen to Lungs again. You want huge grand vocals and orchestration, go listen to Ceremonials again. She's changed. She's evolved. Those other albums will always be there if you want those sounds. Let her create a new sound for people who want something else. You certainly don't have to like the new sounds, but don't complain about someone wanting to change and evolve rather than stay the same.

Each of them is one of a kind, each one is part of Florence personal growth as a woman and as an artist, part of her path, who are we to judge? The part when the guy asks her if she's lost is SO powerful. It's like when you're drifting and hoping for someone to save you but when someone finally does come along and reaches out their hand to you..you don't take it.. hmm
Also the part before that with the guy... It's like when you have someone that cares about you and wants to help but you feel too weak to interact...you feel too overwhelmed to talk...to handle a relationship and it hurts them and you.
She collapses at the end...that could represent when you feel so overwhelmed and exhausted to the point that you collapse.
...This whole music video is a masterpiece 🌟

I don't think there's been a soft and quiet Florence song where she doesn't belt out and crescendo at the end of it so this is actually very refreshing. Her vocals are stunning in this and the instrumentation complements them perfectly.

    Dear Flo,
This song reminds me of the first time I fell in l love and got my heart broken. I’d listen to this song on repeat and sing the lyrics to myself. “I’m learning so I’m leaving, and even though I’m grieving, I’m trying to find the meaning, let loss reveal it” became my mantra, and gave me so much hope during that rough period. Thanks for sharing your art with us, and I hope you know that it has and will continue to move me in ways that words fail to describe.

I’m trying to find the meaning...Let loss reveal it''
Another great song from Florence, very sweet song, lovely words and just a perfect symphony for St.Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes.
The video is magnificent, lets all find the magic!!!

She sounds so fraguile and emotional, so vulnerable in this song. I love it, I love to see this part of her. I love her new songs, her new album. Single by single it feels like falling in love with her again, discovering her again.
I feel the same way that I was 14 and I didn't know about her, and suddenly I discovered I got the love searching random videos in RUclips. The same way, the same feeling like "Oh my God...who is this girl? She's so unique...she's fascinating". With each new album I feel that way again, like if I was discovering a treasure (wich I'm actually doing).

In each video off of the new album, Florence reaches out to touch the lips of another--herself in "How Big How Blue How Wonderful" and her partner in "St. Jude" and "What Kind of Man"--and then brings that touch to her own lips. It such a simple gesture however it invokes so much passion and pain, I would love to know what it symbolizes for her. What does everyone else think this might mean, in that it is repeated throughout the works? Amazing works of art, I love music that inspires so much! Thank you Florence.

My relationship with Florence is currently in that thriving part where everything the person says, does, sings or plays transports you to heaven immediately and the symphonies of seraphs are simply an echo of the lover's voice so I can't judge any of her work objectively due to the fact that i scream a bit and get overwhelmed the second I notice there's a new songs AND the video before i even listen.. wow.. wouldn't trade spots with a sane and reserved pair of ears in a million years

Ok, i don't know if it makes sense but this is what i see: this is after what happened in "What Kind of Man". She's hurt. She's lost. She had been in this bad relationship for so long that she kind of lost herself. And even tho it was an abusive relationship, she's still scared to do something ("oh, St. Jude, somehow she knew, and she came to give her blessing, while causing devastation") but she has nothing else to lose so she just keep on going ("each side is a loser, so who cares who fire the gun?"), knowing anything will be better than the poison her last lover used to put on her. And the whole process is devastating ("and even thought I’m grieving i’m trying to find the meaning") but it's necessary for her to grow and be happy.

Anyone analyzing the symbolism in here? I'm having a hard time making a whole interpretation of it.. But I think the men carrying rocks refer to Sisyphus, the king who was condemned to carry a boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back down again and repeat this forever, symbolizing her relationship going nowhere. 'Another conversation with no destination. Another battle never won.'

Mack Meels it also represents the grief of watching all the hard work you tried to contribute to a relationship and the need to move on, therefore the old man asking "why are you travelling alone?" Because, she had to. She had to move on because there was just destruction all over her and she had to get out.

I listen to the childrens laugh and the unintelligible voices in the music when a hear this music on stream. They're stuck in my head and this puts me in a state almost ethereal but completely earthly. I think the music speaks to me this way. There's something In the back of my mind remembering the voices in my daily life and how important they are, and how difficult is to remember it almost like a dream. Thank you Florence. The music video and the music on its own is a masterpiece. Speaks to something deeply buried wanting to emerging towards sunlight when it's almost dark. Like hope.

    "St. Jude"
    Another conversation with no destination
    Another battle; never won
And each side is a loser
So who cares who fired the gun?
    [Pre-Chorus:]
And I'm learning, so I'm leaving
    And even though I'm grieving
I'm trying to find the meaning
    Let loss reveal it
    Let loss reveal it
    [Chorus:]
St. Jude, the patron saint of the lost causes
St. Jude, we were lost before she started
St. Jude, we lay in bed as she whipped around us
St. Jude, maybe I've always been more comfortable in chaos
And I was on the island and you were there too
But somehow through the storm I couldn't get to you
    St. Jude; somehow she knew
And she came to give her blessing while causing devastation
And I couldn't keep my mouth shut, I just had to mention
    Grabbing your attention
    [Chorus]
    St. Jude
    St. Jude
    St. Jude
    St. Jude
    [Pre-Chorus x2]

Pure brilliance. From the hauntingly calm essence of her voice to the video full of symbolism. St Jude, the European storm, served as the patron saint of hope and lost causes, because through destroying the relationship which was a lost cause, the storm was able to deliver her hope and peace to move onto a better place. "She came to give her blessing while causing devastation," shows that the storm that broke the relationship was truly the blessing in disguise that solved the impossible cause. Truly beautiful.

    Late night thoughts:
Every time I hear this song it literally gives me chills. My interpretation of the song whether it’s romantically or not just a relationship where once was love, or maybe even the idea of love, ended. Not because love isn’t there or went away it’s just personal battles the individuals are going through so they must separate. Lose each other to find who they are as individuals. Seeing it from a personal belief: Although it hurts just letting loss reveal what’s meant to be learned or just meant to be.
Have a great day lovelies! 💕
