Florence + the Machine: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Oct. 16, 2018 | Josh Rogosin -- Her nervousness was palpable and stood in stark contrast to her fully produced stage show. "I'm sorry I'm shy," Florence Welch told the crowd of NPR family and friends gathered for her Tiny Desk performance. "If this was a big gig, I'd probably be climbing all over here and running around."
Opening with the song "June," from Florence + the Machine's 2018 album High As Hope, Florence performed with her eyes closed. By the end of the three-song set, she fully embraced the experience and gave in to the rapturous audience. Within seconds of hearing her first note, the raw power of her un-amplified voice was chilling.
It's impossible to talk about Florence without her backing band. Tom Monger adds exquisite ethereal textures to the songs with his stunning mastery of the pedal harp. Hazel Mill's backing vocals and anthemic power chords on the keys accentuate the poignancy of the lyrics at just the right moments. And Robert Ackroyd's rhythmic, steady acoustic guitar drives the music forward.
But the intensity of the musicality is almost secondary to the message in her lyrics. Ear-worm melodies coupled with repetitive phrases create universal, awe-inspiring anthems. At the end of her first song, Florence implored the crowd to hold on to each other. In "Patricia," she insisted it's such a wonderful thing to love. After 14 enchanting minutes, it's impossible to disagree.

I was in jail for a while and inside we have tablets to use for purchasing stuff to watch or call or whatever. It’s very limited content. It’s not like free access to the whole web. It’s very much selected content. But they do have a variety of NPR tiny desk concerts to watch. I am not lying when I say that I’d watch this concert everyday at least once, partially because everything else wasn’t interesting and also because I attached myself to her voice and lyrics in these three songs. She got me through those hard times. Even on days I was sooo frustrated about being incarcerated and didn’t want to even bother watching this concert and wasting my money, I did so anyways. I am forever grateful to have had Florence to keep me company as I battled the dread of losing my freedom.
shes helped us all through so much. an angel on earth.
I still come back to this concert all the time. Like an emotional connect.
That's intense

I hope you are better now, better times have come!!!
Florence Welch could literally throw me out a window and I would thank her for her time
Thanks for the lol on a Friday afternoon. :) I agree that she's pretty great.
Lol!
I thought it was very funny your comment, but yeah totally agree with you
simp
One time she was so wasted that my ex had to basically escort her home. I am glad she’s sober now; she was on a downward spiral when the band is on hiatus. The high you get from live concerts is much too incomparable.
everyone talks about florence alone, and don't get me wrong she is a *powerhouse* but the band is absolutely incredible too. They're ability to transcend me to an ethereal plane with their music when they're this stripped-down is amazing.

The backup singer really adds a nice touch.

most accurate thing I read about her
A *Florence + the Machine* and *Hozier* album collaboration will be the death of me, I hope I'd ascend into heaven or even just grow wings.
CheesecakeLasagna- omg. that would be earth-shattering. you really think the world is ready for that??
CheesecakeLasagna That album would probably make me move into a cabin in the woods, befriend the wildlife and learn ancient spells to enchant the world.
That album would cure the world of pollution and turn it in to a ethereal paradise where people only speak in songs and whisper in ASMR tones
That album would be amazing, ethereal, illuminating, perfect. I hope we get it one day.
You're absolutely right that would be a collaboration I would almost feel unworthy of listening to, let's hope that one day they will combine their magic 💕
the keyboardist is impressive. Her playing and hitting those perfect harmonies that perfectly blend into Florence's voice.

GOAT COMMENT ALERT!!! ❤
I have no doubt about Florence talent but i have to talk about her backing vocal. She is supporting florence's voice so beautifully. This is so much better than some singers that contract backing vocals only to make up their own lack of talent. 👌🏼
Dude! I was just about to comment on that. She's amazing!

Dean Lowdon I Am almost certain u are right! They know how to make that deep sound together! Gave me chills
@@deanlowdon8381 Hazel Mills.
Yeah that's not Isa.
Her live performances of "Patricia" far outshine the recorded version, especially the ending "it's such a wonderful thing to love". The recorded version just fades out after only 5 repeats (and you can't hear any harp) whereas the live version has that powerful punch of the line getting sung and played faster and it just hits you in your soul!
Jennifer Martin so true i only listen to this version now
She did a live of Patricia on the late show with James Cordon and it is by far the best that I would listen repeatedly but they removed it 😭
@@angelanamarie2494 I saw her live in Philly and she had us all clap with her like in this video. It felt so powerful hearing everyone's clapping and just getting into it!

The guy playing the harp tho... Got them scales on god mode.
I don’t really understand why would anyone consider her and her band “average”. Honestly, her artistic work has quality to it, her lyrics are well thought out and full of symbols, metaphors, allusions and creativity...
Daviti Zivzivadze just let the haters hate lol , enjoy the music
Well have you seen the crap they call good music now a days?
There truly is no one that can even compare to Florence
Preferences I guess
@@erickmaynard3507 What are you even talking about? Nothing was wrong with that beginning? Patricia felt a tad dull compared to other versions of the song she has done. That's the only thing a tad off, but that was just a less interesting rendition rather than a technical issue.
Worse than average? Find me someone who's vocal talent rounds out to her level of extreme breath control, note sustaining, vocal agility, vocal fluidity and ability to weave it the way she can? She can crescendo insanely quick and flip from chest voice to falsetto in the same phrase seamlessly despite the two not being exacty connected in their traits.
You can find people who have better pitch, sure. But, where you're getting 4 and 5 star with her in those areas you'll be getting 2's all day long. And that is in bands most people would deem still " Above average "
What tone deaf geezer thinks she is average? That is a bizarre statement
How she make simple clapping sound so damn good???

the second song, “Patricia,” looks SO hard to play live in terms of tempo. the nervousness on the musicians' faces haha. worth it!! BEAUTIFUL performance. thank you, Earth Witch Florence Welch &co.
Angel Ramirez what about the tempo would make it hard to perform?
it would be ~very~ easy for the song to fall apart since it kind of hinges on the repetition and consistency of the musicians' parts.
I'm sure someone who has been a musician longer than I have could give you a much better and more technical definition than I can! I played clarinet from 5th-9th grade. I am in 12th grade now and miss the classical music world very much :( I'm hoping to get a clarinet of my own soon (I would rent a school instrument before).
anyway, I know you didn't ask for all that haha, but it gives my comment context. I hope I answered your question adequately (:
also, the tempo is very irregular with other musicians coming in and out at strange times and the song taking unexpected turns. I wonder what the time signature might be. it also might be syncopated, but I'm not too sure about that. this song really just plays with tempo--very interesting from a musical standpoint! the accelerando at the end was pretty cool lol
And that cutoff at the end was PERFECT
One of the big difficulties with a. Don't like that would be the increasing pace at the end. It hinges so much on the the musicians keeping consistent I. Their increase and if you note they're taking cues from Florence's clapping. She's conducting the band by providing them the metronome with which to keep which is why you see that "nerves" it's actually intense concentration to make ensure they're keeping pace with the best she's giving them while filtering out other members music. Simtsiniously making sure theyre blending their sound with the others.
It takes remarkable skill AND remarkable trust in Florence not to push them too far or raise too wuick which can happen in a live performance as you get lost into the adrenaline of a live performance. The closest to worry you see if from the harp but even then it's tinged with trust.
It's truly s remarkable performance start to finish
I think we can all agree now after seeing this that Florence Welch is some sort of a goddess from another world that is currently walking in ours to bless us with her magical voice. I mean, if you can't call that voice magical or divine,. I don't what that is anymore. NPR just made tons of people's dream come true with this!

@Adele Eleda I'm not a musician so I'm really interested how one can judge a musician's abilities when they're playing simple pieces. I mean, nothing she played on the piano was super complicated, I could play that myself. How do you distinguish between a very good pianist and an average one in that case?
They are solid professionals, I think it’s just how well they seem to compliment Florence, especially the Harp/Piano/Backing vocals.
@@Moormores How edgy of you...no, they're actually good and complement each other very well.

no7puppetcollection I love you. Hope peace is restored soon.
Her back up singer is unreal!!! I always loved Florence but this set just made me realise how much her backup singer was influencing the various songs she released :D Great job NPR as always
I mean, I don't think the backup singer influenced the writing or sounds of the songs themselves LOL Florence usually just beats on walls and belts til she forms something and adds in her own vocal layers. She can't sing lead and do background though unless she uses a backing track, if she did it wouldn't be acoustic and she prefers having background vocals when she can. Some stages are just too small and confining to allow it though.
Amen! Their voices together each time made my skin crawl in celebration.
Hazel isn't a part of the band ordinarily, Isabel has traditionally been on keys and helped with composing, though she didn't do any work on this past album
Influenced? LOL no. Usually she has a gospel singer as background because they can keep up with her powerful voice and notes

I was never a fan, and I now emphasise the was. Sometimes the intimacy of a small acoustic set shows the real magic........ and like a magician the doubt is gone and this performance has blown me away.
Derek Smyth how pleasant
I dont know how you could have “never” been a fan of this band. It is one of the greatest bands to ever play. Thats like saying you were never a fan of Led Zeppelin until you heard them play in concert.
Michael Hartmann some people have different opinions? There’s definitely times I went to concerts for one person and ended up loving the opener so there’s that
Yeah, some people just need to feel that live nerve to really get swept off of their feet. For some kinds of music, I'm one of them.
Michael Hartmann what I heard on commercial radio was so “big”, complexed and processed that the raw talent and passion gets lost amongst the mixing and production. Then you have a performance like this and while it’s only a little more minimal the talent of the artists come to the front.
Back in the Led Zeplins day, album production was a lot closer to a live performance than what is done today and why I love their albums more that overly produced rock of today.

Her ability to hit higher notes with her head down in the first song shows her vocal prowess. I certainly can't do that. She's got something amazing between two lungs.
June is the most underrated song of the album. Its phenomenal
tbh I didn't much attention to it until I listened it live in her Athens Acropolis Concert in 2019...I can say up to this day it was the most magical musical moment of the whole concert and of all my life maybe! To see that she still played it among her hits again some days in her recent Athens concert was the most delightful surprise!
Florence is so delicate and yet so strong. I also feel she really is extreme, especially in the way she handles her own talent
She knows how to dose it and give it back to her people and she definitely gives her best in "extreme" ambiences: either extreme cozy little rooms or in the biggest festival ever. That's where her magic happens and it's not only about the atmosphere, is about the gravity she's got. I dunno if it makes sense but it did in my head after being enchanted by this.
