Paramore: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Oct. 2, 2017 | Lars Gotrich -- Paramore's After Laughter captures the moment between rapture and its comedown, the glitter wiped away, left with skin rubbed raw. It's a record, more than a decade into the band's career, that not only exposes the sparkling pop that's always lit Paramore's songs, but also deals with the ache of growing up and growing apart. When Hayley Williams sings, "Tell my friends I'm coming down / We'll kick it when I hit the ground" from the '80s-tastic jam "Hard Times" at the Tiny Desk, the stark dichotomy is laid bare by the band's stripped-down performance that still packs a small synth and Zac Farro's drum machine into its Afro-pop-flecked textures.
Backed here only by guitarist Taylor York, "26" is Williams' letter to a younger self, to still believe in dreams, knowing its costs. Paramore's quieter songs have never quite shown this depth of understated devastation and determination, and Williams reflects that nuance in a voice that scales the end of the line, "And they say that dreaming is free," with just the slightest trail of regret.
These songs extend After Laughter's themes, racing across the spectrum of hope, with "Fake Happy" as a soaring anthem to expressing your truest self (and calling out those playing pretend). At the Tiny Desk, the shimmering guitars and synths almost become tropical, as if the band's all taken a big swig of Drake's "Passionfruit" and started a lowkey jam among friends.

"Fake Happy"

This is wow this totally reminds me of when I lost it
This girl has been 21 for the last ten years
This year I'm older than Hayley
So, she hasn't progressed or matured? Accurate. Why is she allowed on this show.
And that is a magical lyric

@Late to the Game no but I wish lol but instead I'm stuck at a 9-5 job
100% 👍
I feel like this hits harder when you’ve grown up with them
Lucky you, i only became a fan of them in 2020
I literally found them by accident in 2006 on bebo! I'm 28 now and growing up with them makes their songs hit different for sure
@@sabhyata2655 Same!
I cried a little watching this knowing that I used to a big fan of Hailey. Now, 11 years later she's still my adolescence dream girl.
even more when you get depressed with them too, I can assure
Hayley: You can dance if you want to
Also Hayley: Plays 26
Anna Gvinianidze 😂 fr tho
LOL
And now, I call to this movement "depression is fun"
telling them what to do
Im not sad and im feeling her words dancing today..even to 26.. She wants me to move my body..i oblige ha ha
I love hayley says 26 is a sad song as if the rest of the album is not depressive af
Ya, but as Hayley said, it's the most transparent... while all the others are hiding behind a mask
True hahaha
It's basically almost like every The Smiths discography
I think the reason it’s transparent is that it’s the only song that describes what we should be holding onto and that is hope whereas the other songs describes the feelings and what we use to put on a facade. I may be wrong though but that’s how I interpret on why 26 is a transparent song.
It’s not the most upbeat song from all the other songs too.
Always compare that song to the others and plus it’s also the song with a number which I think denotes her age but yeah I am just guessing that.
PS this is also not a very depressing song. In fact it’s a pretty optimistic song. It talks about hope and dreams. Hence the transparency.
26 is the least depressive/most hopeful song in the album. All the other ones are depressive just with an upbeat rhythm
A past boyfriend of mine and I were really into Paramore.. we had went to two of their shows together and had some matching shirts. He killed himself 6 years ago and I took a big step away from everything that reminded me of him and that time of my life..... Including this music . The Only Exception was "our song" and I associated so much of her voice with the embodiment of my own inner feelings towards my lover..... Once he was dead I couldn't bear to hear her singing, I thought.
I feel incredibly guilty now, listening to this. I realize now that while I was taking a step away from Paramore that they were making exactly the kind of music I needed to hear.
Thank you for being consistently talented and consistently deep and considering in your message. Thank you.
Dee C Music is one thing that can heal our wounds and take us back to places that have never been anything more than moments in time, that aren’t possible to return to otherwise. It’s where the magic in the world lies.

Fake happy is so good
thanks bro!!😊
thx
i love how she played 26 so perfectly like she didnt just give us the freakiest rendition of hard times ever
Her sad songs in this album is the embodiment of "trying to be okay" by sounding happy when your world feels like it's fallen apart because of depression.
But of course, 26 is a straight up sad song. Won't argue about that. Lol
You nailed it.
Relatable lol

Paramore is not a band. Its an emotion 😢
It definitely isssss 😭
I've never made it through 26 without crying. It's the song that helped me getsober. It helps me every day of my life.
It helped me through so much as well. I still listen to this album almost every day.
Proud of you
For me is the opposite. 26 makes me drink more 😢
Her voice is literally flawless.
looks like someone here knows their stuff
*_LITERALLY_*
Leia Periwinkl oh please, she doesn’t even understand her lyrics
Her voice is ok I'd say. Nothing really outstanding imho
It's great, but not flawless
Hayley is the kind of person that put milk in the bowl first so the cereal’s gonna have a soft landing.
That's so random, funny, and profound at the same time.
LOL no. She screwed over her old band mates.
Pablo V. No, she didn't, you can thank the record label she's signed to for that. Zac *came back* if he thought he was screwed over by her and only her he wouldn't be here, now would he?
Preach Kristen!!!

she does SO MANY arrangements on the spot and she manages to make them work every time i love her

It is amazing how Hayley Williams never sing out of tune. It is not easy to find singers so good on live performances. The whole band´s sound is very polished and I am sure they work very hard to be as perfect as possible. It is nice to see real people performing. I am so tired of fake music. Paramore is a treasure.
Listen to Aurora! There's no difference between her live performances and recordings.
No you
SDM17RG yes! She is amazing!! :)
@9:37
I have bad news for you. You have shit hearing and you are not a good judge of music quality. Besides her voice cracking all over the place she also sings out of tune in a lot of spots. Gets worse as she goes on - must have warmed up before the show but that only lasts so long. Maybe she will get better with age - not much practice time in her life yet.
Her vocals are so clean. Mesmerizing.
hearing 26 acoustic like this hurts so good
IKR
You can feel Hayley's whole heart while she is singing 26, that's what i call talent
Ram Tripathi wow the "send bobs and vagene" meme becomes real
damn real
yup, i can see it from her expression
Zac and Hayley's handshake after 26 tho. It's like he was making sure she was alright
Sometimes the can make you feel worse
My fv part
Oh yeah, that part makes me feel a bit gloomy😔
8:21 is the handshake...
I feel like he was complimenting her flawless singing in that song
26 is all it should be. Honest, sad, inspiring, and melodically impeccable.
I never listened to Paramore back in the day, I wasn't a pop-punk kid so I didn't feel the need to check em out. I watched this performance last year, I did a deep-dive, and Hayley/Paramore are one of my favorite musical acts ever. Her solo stuff is amazing, and After Laughter is one of the best albums of all time. Wouldn't have looked into them without this video, thank you for posting.
check out Santigold. she has a Tiny Desk Concert as well 🙂. Deftones are good too
So True
facts after laughter is one of the best albums of all time i love that album so much ever since it came out i have so many memories with it and i still love to listen to it till this day, funny enough ive never seen this video before until today so we’re kind of like reversed😂
I’m a later bloomer on the pop punk kid music and my god. I missed out,
Listen to BNE. It’s an album you can listen straight through
Hayley Williams is so talented.
Like a modern day Stevie Nicks.
Underrated? she is an icon
Not sure underrated is a good description.
Not just her, but also Taylor and Zac.
They're all underrated and i don't understand why
Would never expect Paramore on npr but I’m so glad they had them on. I loved this especially this version of fake happy.
Kel Rogers I knew they were on here for awhile now and I've been waiting for the video release
They should put that version of Fake Happy on their album.
The audio is available through NPR's Tiny Desk Concert - Audio podcast on iTunes.
This version reminds me of the little mermaid. Lol. I like them both so much tho I'd take both on the album.
Amazing version of fake happy- I like it better than the album
watching this after seeing Hayley's tiny desk and I want more
I now just realized that I have never heard acoustic version of Paramore before and I enjoy this band since my 11 years.
I love the fact that you can literally see her feeling the music through every bone in her body... is crazy how talented she is and how passionate she is!
i realise this is the biggest reason why i find myself bobbing to any of their live performances
100%, she’s amazing!
Thats the Spirit ♡

Yeah man especially this version. You can feel it so much! They are tighter than ever! So great.
For life
i am the only one that like old paramore AND new paramore?
I love Paramore, they will always be one of my favorite bands.
I love both of them too I think it’s amazing
Love it all
Definitely not! I just jammed out to the entire riot! album and After Laughter
Paramore's entire discography is great!
what makes paramore different from other, is their performance live is so different from the studio version and usually it's better than the studio version. and hayley always finds a fun way on a new rendition of their songs, singing live
She’s one of the best to ever do it - no one can tell me different
Things I've taken from this performance: it's so much funkier stripped down, I love it. The OP-1 is perhaps the coolest synth ever. Zac is too cool for school. Hayley is too sweet.
Ace one!
Amy Naylor just ordered an OP-1. Been watching so many videos on them and when I heard the synths kick in I was like I wonder if someone is playing an OP-1 and they were haha!
From what I can tell there's no OP-1 in this video... right?
The lil synth that the dude on the end is playing ain't it?
I think it's a Roland TR-8 (thank you close up for Fake Happy), so bad ass though
Oh we're looking at different synths xD Not the black drum machine Zac is playing, the lil white sampler on the other end. The colours of the dials match with that of the OP-1
This is amazing as always
ARTV Ayo Jon, had a feeling you'd be here
It always makes me happy when I see you comment on Paramore videos 😂
I kind of knew you'd be here
It's JONNY
amazing as alvvays
Hearing her perform 26 hit me straight in the heart. Omfg. I didn’t find myself into that latest album as much but that song IS IT. So glad she performed. It was a bum out in a good way. Lol

Hai Paramore 2021 please comeback again 🎉🎉
@@heregood494 the band broke up, Hailey is a solo artist now.
@@tim4304 they didnt break up lol, they're on hiatus. Hayley said it herself.
Really pure performance. Love Hayley's energy, she just lives the song as she's singing it. Sick.
David McDonald No, I'm not retarded, thanks for checking. Energy doesn't have to be how she moves. Her voice has a lot of character, she's adding a lot of colour and choppiness especially in the first song. She's just enjoying herself and that naturally means a performance that's more involved. But hey, open to interpretation and opinion!
David McDonald Haha even though she's straight edge.
David McDonald Holy shit dude... Congratulations!! on being one of the most severely stupid and ignorant assholes I have encountered on all of social media in the past month or so...
I genuinely can't even imagine how it must feel to be that sincerely moronic, because the idiocracy and ignorance is so severely potent...
Thats the best retort I have ever read!
Each song, you can see she's totally immersed and pouring out so much. It's incredible

I remember in one interview years ago, she had said it was creepy that older guys were at their shows….I’m sorry, I was one of those older guys….well written songs and talented vocals and instruments…good music can’t be denied…I’ll continue to gravitate to talent wherever it shows up!
that's kind of funny. I guess it depends how old but haley is a superstar and she has a lot going for her. She attracts many different types of fans.
Music has no age limit!! You do you!
I’m guessing that’s when she was like 17 of 18?
thats a strange thing to admit
@Oscar Hubczenko how so? He just admitted that he's a fan of her music. Just the same as anyone else that was at the concert. Great music is ageless and timeless.
Her control is absolutely mesmerizing
She is literally a flawless singer.
Timothy Switzer actually she misses a fair few notes
Thank you for teaching me what real music is. I am forever indebted to you.
EQ-smoove Looks like YOU need to widen your taste
EQ-smoove wow very edgy i guess you only listen to real music !!
Of course not.
The evolution of Paramore really reflects Hayley’s life and this album really reflects the sadness she’s been going through and the thoughts that have followed. I hope God can shine a light in her life so that she’s able to be the funky gal we know her to be.
Also I hope we as fans can play a part of that healing process
Amen!
riona ri ikr fans who moan about AL being too pop doesn't help :/ the album's great
Did she have a break up and that is why these songs in AL are sad lyrics
that "I hope God can shine a light in her" really gives me Miracle outro reference, I'm-- 🤧
That rendition of 26 was so beautiful, full of emotion. It's possibly my favorite song of theirs
Hayley in 2017:
“After all wasnt I who said to keep your feet on the ground”
Hayley in 2009:
“Keep your feet on the ground when your head’s in the clouds’
genius
Hayley in 2020: my feet won't touch the ground beneath me
I've had a crush on Hayley for over a decade now, she's so good. Paramore's ability to consistently put out good albums is amazing. I can listen to their whole discography and not have to skip anything, not many artists can do that
Ghostface GZA TRUUUUUUUUTH! One of the reasons I fell so hard for Paramore since 2005 was their ability to create music that I keep loving! The only song I’ve never liked was Still Into You.
Saaaame!
If you don't skip No Friend, you are one of the greats.
Matthew De Matos well, i don't. It's perfect to listen after idle worship idk
Sofia wow still into you is like one of my all time favorites
Is it too much to ask you to sorta reconsider and give it a good listening?
They look so grown up, but still Paramore
OTR Means On The Run yes indeed they do.
Hayley looks the complete opposite of grown up. You'd think she got into experimenting with mom's makeup and put on a bunch of dirty laundry. Plus it looks like she cuts her own hair. Jk.
Also all the original members are gone except for Hayley
Deziree Brock Zac came back tho
Taylor's still here too
26 is such a stunning song!! this stripped back version like this is so beautiful!
i swear i wanna hug her when 26 played. she deserve to be happy. i'm so glad to see Zac come back together with Hayley and Taylor. i hope it can make them stay strong as a band as well as their friendship.
I'm so glad she sang 26. She's a great rock singer, but they don't illustrate how great her voice is as much as a ballad.
I don't understand why no one is getting their Alternative Rock edge. There's more to music than just Rock, Pop, Country and Rap. There are so many sub-genres. If you truly open yourself up to paramore's lyrics and sound....man it would be great
It's people who were born after '99 and never got a taste of Alternative music.
Humans love categorizing everything in boxes. And when something fits in more than one box or they can't find a box, there's a lot of upset ppl.
Ehh no, Hard Times isn't rocky. RIOT and Brand New Eyes were, this isn't.
Speaking of those that completely ignore that there was such thing as alternative rock...
"alternative rock" can mean so many things it's ridiculous. The genre of rock has become so diluted to the point that almost anything can be considered "rock".
I love how much Hayley plays with her voice
I love how she switches between singing and talking so easily.
The look in her eyes during 26 broke my heart 😢 thank you Paramore, for everything!
Me too. I look the same way when I'm going through it in life. Hope she's doing okay.
I didn't even realize she lowkey started crying 😢
Omg same, she looked so down immediately

This video is how I found Paramore, I listened to it three times in a row and have loved Paramore ever since
Man Taylor is brilliant. The unsung hero of Paramore who I'll admit I didn't really fully appreciate until hearing the composition of every single song on this album. A true genius.

I love how funky they made hard times and how staccato she made it ❤
I was a HUGE paramore fan when I was young. I understand that everyone changes and evolves and I respect that and I understand that they have to do whatever kind of music they want. But I did want to say that I throughly enjoyed 26. It's the most I've felt listening to paramore in years!

Having been to one of their Tour one concerts this year I can admit they are different. But (and that's a big but) i could feel them being honest. Like growing up with me. I did have the time of my life cried and laughed so they are still my favourite band. I hope they keep changing if we get to have such emotional pieces from them.

erin s That's cool, I'll agree that this album can grow on you more than the first listen :) What draws me in are the awesome lyrics. It's unexpected and hidden beneath the surface of the pop beat, but it's right there.
After Laughter is Paramore's best album. It's so nice to finally see them in a comfortable place with each other, taking creative risks, and just overall enjoying the music that they're making. I feel so lucky to be able to still listen to new Paramore after they weren't even sure if the band was going to continue. So excited for this band's future.
Ashley Ferrante I'd say the same, but a I love the dramatic vibe on the self titled too much.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore self-titled!!! Some of their best songs are on that album.
Ashley Ferrante Best Álbum?
Ashley Ferrante "it's so nice to finally see them in a comfortable place with each other" I had that vibe since Josh left. I seriously loved the self titled era, you could feel happiness and peace. I come back to rewatch this every few months and 26 still makes me cry every time
Love them so much! Hayley's voice is just incredible I wish this was longer!

I am curious… what do you mean by this? All voices are instruments so I’m curious what stands out to you about the way she sings
@@Racheldorenofficial for many instruments you play the note and it comes out perfectly. Assuming it’s tuned. Human voices struggle to hit the notes of the song live. Or they waver and float in and out of the note. She hits the pitch like she’s pressing a button.

I LOVE that they can tailor a performance for any audience or venue. When they perform, its not just a live rendition of a song on the album. Each performance is so unique and special. it really makes me listen closer because i know it's not going to be the song i already know. They are great at putting some special twists on it.
