I stumbled on this by accident and I have to say I'm one of those 40 something fogies who usually comments stuff like "where are all the good songwriters like Joni and Carole and Dylan? Modern music sucks." Well, I certainly have a lot to learn. There are TONS of true artists out there right now.

Wow, she clearly views herself as self-destructive in relationships. This video and the lyrics suggest she loses control and often doesn't realise it until the aftermath. I like the vulnerability of choosing to shoot it in her own home. It's so devastating and emotional. I wonder if she has demons she is dealing with. If she is, I hope her art is her catharsis.
***** It's probably why she started it in the first place. I see the words "ship to wreck" as Florence asking herself if her destiny's to get into disastrous relationships where the angry side of her can't be tamed.
***** we all have demons. I'm sure we all face them, but Florence has an harmonic way of fighting them. we as ordinary beings, are on mute. until she creates.. then we dance freely to her voice.

The "ship" metaphor is fitting, as the sea is one of the main theme's of the album. She is describing human nature through the forces that already exist in nature. Yes, it is about one's destruction in relationship. This is denoted through the use of "did I build this ship to wreck". In other words, a ship wreck or a self-fulfilling prophesy.
+remfanbefor Lovell It is multifacted in its inspirations, Florance even said so. This means it can speak to us on many levels. Something that makes a great song a classic.
I love how empowered Florence is these videos. 1:34 really shows her power and integrity - she shoves him away, denying him any vestige of 'more'. The only time she's a victim is when its to herself. She creates her own storms - but I think what we're leading up to with the track How big How Blue How Beautiful ,is the moment where she'll move above the storm into that blue, which she fighting for within herself.
As someone with Borderline PD.... this is like a visual representation of the turmoil in my head in every relationship (romantic, familial or what have you). This constant fighting with myself that leaks out into fights with them, the calm facade that feels like the thinnest veneer over my internal anxiety, likely to tear open at the slightest upheaval, the disjointed thoughts and cloudy memory and exhaustion and vibrancy... Honestly, if someone asked me to show them what BPD was, I'd probably just send them a link to this music video. Between the song itself and the visuals, that's that.
“I can’t help but pull the earth around me, to make my bed” - I saw comments saying this was alcoholism, and I’m so amazed how Florence can write a song that can be interpreted so many ways. I always thought the line was about seeing yourself as someone that takes up space, and doesn’t care who gets hurt in the process.
I think it’s quite probably meant to mean an amalgamation of both of those things. People who suffer from addiction and substance abuse often do feel that they are selfish and destructive to the people close to them, and frankly they are a lot of the time, so I think it’s about her awareness that her struggles with addiction are hurting the people she loves, which is a very clear theme throughout the video here too.

Patrick G I listen to your Florence and the Machine cover a lot. I don't usually like instrumental stuff but I fell in love with your playing. When will you cover this one? and I agree with you. this is already my favorite album of hers. She's so cool!
Wow, raw and honest! This is music at it's finest, as it takes courage and trust to go this deep and put it all out there. I think "Ship To Wreck" is a metaphor for self sabotage.
Truth be told I love her albuns, this song and this video.... The way she fights him, herself, everything and then she sadly asks if she had build that ship to wreck.... I feel like that so many times for a while now... it's been one of my favorite songs.
So I think I may get it: The first Florence is the normal one, the one Florence herself wants to be, but the second Florence is her inner demon; the crazy and reckless one. The normal Florence is always trying to pull the other one out of her (if you notice, she is always trying to pull something out of her mouth in the videos). At the end of the video, we see the normal Florence running from the crazy one until the crazy one goes back into the real Florence. lol idk this just came to my head.
I'd not describe her as a "normal Florence". I'd called them "wild part" and "calm/blue part" , and flo behaviour is defined by which part rules her in the moment. And there is no escape as you said. But its just my opinion. It doesn't matter what flo meant, cause this is art and it can be interpreted in various ways :) Love the song :3
If those who love to sing along like I do: "Ship To Wreck" Don't touch the sleeping pills, they mess with my head, Dredging the Great White Sharks, swimming in the bed, And here comes a Killer Whale, to sing me to sleep, Thrashing the covers off, it has me by it's teeth. And oh my love remind me, what was it that I said? I can't help but pull the earth around me, to make my bed And oh my love remind me, what was it that I did? Did I drink too much? Am I losing touch? Did I build this ship to wreck? To wreck, to wreck, to wreck, Did I build this ship to wreck? What's with the long face? Do you want more? Thousands of red-eyed mice, scratching at the door, Don't let the curtain catch you, cause you've been here before, The chair is an island darling, you can't touch the floor, And oh my love remind me, what was it that I said? I can't help but pull the earth around me, to make my bed And oh my love remind me, what was it that I did? Did I drink too much? Am I losing touch? Did I build this ship to wreck? To wreck, to wreck, to wreck, Did I build this ship to wreck? And good God, under starry skies we are lost, And into the breach we got tossed, And the water's coming in fast! To wreck, to wreck, to wreck, Did I build this ship to wreck?
I loved how in the ending of the video, she lay where she first was in the beginning, and it symbolizes how it's kind of a cycle??? and it happens again and again??? idkif that makes sense
Like really its been 6 years and one night i find my self to be finding a piece "peace" in this song. She is more than an artist, more like an deity to worship 🙏

she talked about getting fucked up and singing at a bar and leaving new friends at her house , witch is in her video, and saying she didn't work so hard just to have it all trashed in a night.P.S. Her foot was broken at the time. Just LOVE them!
This is the first Florence + The Machine song I've ever heard. It came on the radio as I was driving a few weeks ago and I've only just now found it again. Absolutely mesmerizing. I think I'm really going to like this band.
The red light scene in the video, where she’s battling her “Other Self” and Her lover is caught in the middle of the chaos is so profound. I see myself in that scene and how I’ve been in every relationship I ever had especially the part where she pulls him for a brace and then pushes him away and starts punching the chair. I know that exact feeling she’s portraying the constant pull and push.
This song describes how I've felt my whole life. Rage and self destruction alternating with depression and wanting to JUST feel normal. Fucking amazing song!
Don't forget that no one is normal. Not if we are true to ourselves. Try to turn your mad ass self around and work towards something more positive, and these traits will work themselves out.
Omg I just woke up and now I'm freaking out bc florence is brilliant and has an incredible mind. Idk if this makes sense but yeah. Florence is a genius and I love her so damn much ★

It was 2018. We where at the MELT Festival in Germany, Ferropolis. Its Saturday night, we all were pretty drunk and came across the Main Stage, where Florence + The Machine already played. Normally we all go to this Festival to dance to hard electronic music but this moment, the people infornt of the stage even the level of drunkness. Everything was perfect. And this is the song that reminds me of the Festival that year. An awesome experience. Great people, great music and a lot of love all over.
+Emily Roberts The one that made me laugh is when she led the security bloke a merry dance when she got off the stage. As soon as they caught up with her she was off. Though I did feel a tad sorry for her brother in a recent one where she announced he was looking for a girlfriend. I bet the poor sod got no peace. I can just seeing running around the festival grounds with a group of women chasing him.

That was beautiful...and dark...the music released so far is turning out to be quite amazing. Just what I needed :)
Patrick G I listen to your Florence and the Machine cover a lot. I don't usually like instrumental stuff but I fell in love with your playing. When will you cover this one? and I agree with you. this is already my favorite album of hers. She's so cool!
she crazy!
Seeing her live is beyond amazing
The person behind the camera, the director, the person who wrote the script hugely deserve a huge applause !. How uniquely they made it !
Even her house is a piece of art
Wow, raw and honest! This is music at it's finest, as it takes courage and trust to go this deep and put it all out there. I think "Ship To Wreck" is a metaphor for self sabotage.
True
That's part of it to be sure.
I'm so happy that I discovered this song. Now I'm going through really hard times, my life is a total mess and this song helps me a lot.
How did it help you?
@@ananyasharma379 She dead

2023 and Florence still hitting like she came out yesterday 😭
this song is so touching. I feel in your voice the anguish, anger and passion.
Archer King Sounds like the description of an X-files Episode.......the truth is out there
i
I'd not describe her as a "normal Florence". I'd called them "wild part" and "calm/blue part" , and flo behaviour is defined by which part rules her in the moment. And there is no escape as you said. But its just my opinion. It doesn't matter what flo meant, cause this is art and it can be interpreted in various ways :) Love the song :3
jasiu216 I know it can be interpreted in many ways. This is just what I thought it meant. Ikr, this song is amazing!

I think Flo is creating a new genre of music video!!
That's exactly what I was thinking! These videos are amazing!
Listen to the band Heart.
Love the blink in the opening! ;) 0:10
Please invite me to your house Flo!!! It looks magical!! *_*
I know right! And all her clothes take up two rooms! Can i just live in those rooms? Lol

Wow. Her voice in that chorus gives me chills.
If those who love to sing along like I do:
"Ship To Wreck"
Don't touch the sleeping pills, they mess with my head,
Dredging the Great White Sharks, swimming in the bed,
And here comes a Killer Whale, to sing me to sleep,
Thrashing the covers off, it has me by it's teeth.
And oh my love remind me, what was it that I said?
I can't help but pull the earth around me, to make my bed
And oh my love remind me, what was it that I did?
Did I drink too much?
Am I losing touch?
Did I build this ship to wreck?
To wreck, to wreck, to wreck,
Did I build this ship to wreck?
What's with the long face? Do you want more?
Thousands of red-eyed mice, scratching at the door,
Don't let the curtain catch you, cause you've been here before,
The chair is an island darling, you can't touch the floor,
And oh my love remind me, what was it that I said?
I can't help but pull the earth around me, to make my bed
And oh my love remind me, what was it that I did?
Did I drink too much?
Am I losing touch?
Did I build this ship to wreck?
To wreck, to wreck, to wreck,
Did I build this ship to wreck?
And good God, under starry skies we are lost,
And into the breach we got tossed,
And the water's coming in fast!
To wreck, to wreck, to wreck,
Did I build this ship to wreck?
This song got me through so much the nightmares the endless nightmares of horrendous times I went through
I'm addicted to this song
I loved how in the ending of the video, she lay where she first was in the beginning, and it symbolizes how it's kind of a cycle??? and it happens again and again??? idkif that makes sense
I am confident to say that this particular song is probably my Mom's favorite.
Like really its been 6 years and one night i find my self to be finding a piece "peace" in this song. She is more than an artist, more like an deity to worship 🙏
I LOVE HER!!! She makes me feel young again! All Hail Florence!!!
How is Florence Welch so Beautiful? Such a powerful vocal command and Entertaining young Lady. Yes I want More!
Sometimes this song reminds me of my love right now... When it's good, it's good. But when it's bad, it's bad. I love him dearly. Let's lift off baby!! Let's live a life we deserve!!! Lord willing 2022 will bring GOOD things. For us and whoever is reading this! 🙏🏻
I’m coming clean to my parents about my gf today, & I’m listening to this song to help build confidence. Thanks Florence
she talked about getting fucked up and singing at a bar and leaving new friends at her house , witch is in her video, and saying she didn't work so hard just to have it all trashed in a night.P.S. Her foot was broken at the time. Just LOVE them!
I work at outback and they always play this song so I’m here!
As a hip hop artist, I get so much inspiration from her music. This is song is so.... words can’t explain.

Ive throught that too. She came to surface out from the sea.
I'm 48 and lived ALL through the Manc sceine and I think that THIS is the best song I've ever heard.
This is the first Florence + The Machine song I've ever heard. It came on the radio as I was driving a few weeks ago and I've only just now found it again. Absolutely mesmerizing. I think I'm really going to like this band.
3 years after. Did you still like them?
@@lppaiva64 I sure do! To this day, Florence + The Machine is my favorite band.
@@sunflower-salt ahh thanks for replying. Have a nice year
what a great voice
The red light scene in the video, where she’s battling her “Other Self” and Her lover is caught in the middle of the chaos is so profound. I see myself in that scene and how I’ve been in every relationship I ever had especially the part where she pulls him for a brace and then pushes him away and starts punching the chair. I know that exact feeling she’s portraying the constant pull and push.
its not an other self fkn terminator that copied her & is trying to terminate her
2021 and I still can't stop listening to this song

Why try to stop? This song will never stop rewarding you for hanging in there.

Idk what it is about her but she is so beautiful....her voice is like no other so called singer out there...
first heard it on flower dome singapore 2016, love it
I love it, Flo's videos are always so artistic. I'm so excited about the new album it's great to see her back I've missed her so much.
This song describes how I've felt my whole life. Rage and self destruction alternating with depression and wanting to JUST feel normal. Fucking amazing song!
Hang in there! Life gets better the more knocks. Eventually you learn the knocks are what makes you awesome
Don't forget that no one is normal. Not if we are true to ourselves. Try to turn your mad ass self around and work towards something more positive, and these traits will work themselves out.
Her song is so relatable
My favorite song. Made of pure magic and sun rays
For those who don’t know this is actually her house in London
LEGEND !
My favorite song by her, as well as a true story of every relationship I have had since my first heartbreak in 2009.
A Hauntingly Beautiful Masterpiece ....and my Favorite song! Congratulations Florence + The Machine on "5" Grammy nominations!
This woman and this band were sent from heaven to save this sick world.

Awesome song!
This is underrated and so brilliant. Years later I'm still blown away by this video.... Florence is a Force. 🙏
What a voice, what personal lyrics.
The whole album is excellent!
Every time I hear a Florence song, I just like it more and more.

Omg I just woke up and now I'm freaking out bc florence is brilliant and has an incredible mind. Idk if this makes sense but yeah. Florence is a genius and I love her so damn much ★
What a voice jeez I love women singers. They give us what we need
No one will ever understand how much i want Adele and Florence to make a album together

3:24 what a meaningful and touching scene
It was 2018. We where at the MELT Festival in Germany, Ferropolis. Its Saturday night, we all were pretty drunk and came across the Main Stage, where Florence + The Machine already played. Normally we all go to this Festival to dance to hard electronic music but this moment, the people infornt of the stage even the level of drunkness. Everything was perfect. And this is the song that reminds me of the Festival that year. An awesome experience. Great people, great music and a lot of love all over.
As if it were even possible, she is even more badass in concert. I am in love with her.

Is'nt this her own home? I think I recognized the drapes and her wardrobe.

***** Her home was featured in Vogue so naturally I recognized it. And her wardrobe is easily recognizable because look at how big it is. It's even bigger than my own room I think lmao
