Florence + The Machine - Hunger (Lyrics)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
At seventeen I started to starve myself
I thought that love was a kind of emptiness
And at least I understood then the hunger I felt
And I didn't have to call it loneliness
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
Tell me what you need
Oh, you look so free
The way you use your body, baby
Come on and work it for me
Don't let them get you down
You're the best thing I've seen
We never found the answer
But we knew one thing
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
And it's Friday night and it's kicking in
In that pink dress, they're gonna crucify me
Oh and you in all your vibrant youth
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty
And for a moment
I thought that love was in the drugs
But the more I took, the more it took away
And I could never get enough
I thought that love was on the stage, give yourself to strangers
You don't have to be afraid
Then it tries to find a home
With people or when I'm alone
Picking it apart
And staring at your phone
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
Tell me what you need
Oh, you look so free
The way you use your body, baby
Come on and work it for me
Don't let them get you down
You're the best thing I've seen
We never found the answer
But we knew one thing
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
We all have a hunger
(We all have a hunger)
And it's Friday night and it's kicking in
In that pink dress, they're gonna crucify me
Oh and you in all your vibrant youth
How could anything bad ever happen to you?

"At seventeen I started to starve myself. I thought that love was a kind of emptiness"
I won't ever get over this line
same
@Anne-Marie Robinson I suffered it too and that line melt in my heart.
As a former bulimic guy it really was such a powerful line I love her music it’s so poetic and beautiful
It can also be seen to mean she starved herself of love. It's a double entendre.
@Calvin Michael Jonas some people aren't happy with themselves, most have an issue with their weight. They think starving will make them look better and that they'll finally be happy themselves.
It's mostly female that do it to ourselves. Ive been there and this is my favorite line
“The way you use your body baby come on and work it for me” doesn’t feel sexual it feels more like teaching someone to take pride in their body and the beauty of movement and dance.
When we do admire someone else's energy and not only that but they're happy sharin with us no matter who we are. I would write a pretty song too.
She wrote this song about her anorexia, so I think she is talking about how she should value more than her physical appearance.
OR,... or... She likes how the trunk on that elephant swings... eh?? EH?? High 5?? Someone?
@@lynncrf SOURCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SOOOOOOOOUUUUURCCCCEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@lynncrf yeah, and I’ve dealt with anorexia since I was 14 and this song strikes a cord for me in exactly that way
This woman doesn't exist, she was created by a collective hysteria.
She's fairy, the way she moves is so magical, so fluid, is absolutelly mesmerizing. Her voice, i don't know if her voice is angelical or diabolic, i just know that i love it.
her voice is symphonic, like a orchestra with all registers complete
Saw her in concert in ATL last year. I promise she’s just as good in person 😩👌
It's primal
Diabolical angel. Sounds wonderful
@@williamsmith8041 the stupiditoes we gotta read 🤦♀️
"You make a fool of death with your beauty" gives me the chills everytime I come back to this
same
Thats a good line.
I love how she dances, it’s not “pretty” it’s powerful.
I think it is pretty too.
Nathan Robertson you’re right, I should have said “not just “pretty.””
I think the way she dances is what freedom looks like, it's just giving in to how the music moves you without hesitation
great_art_and_life _1 Maybe, but there is some natural talent in there too... because if I just moved how the music took me, I’d look like a bumblebee having a seizure. 🥺
@@jessicahare5910 haha as would I, she's just all around an amazing artist and I'm happy that she chooses to share her gifts with us
Florence always gives me flashbacks of memories I never had

You've put it into words thank you
What a beautiful way to describe it !
I remember holding a bottle of pills thinking of ending it all. I bought this album and blasted it and just sat there, listening. This song came on and I started dancing alone in my room still clutching those damn pills. Thank you Florence, I'm still here.
Wow, that is amazing. I hope you are doing better now
Thank you for still being here.
Glad you're still here.
💜
The world is better for you being in it, however hard that may be to believe sometimes. I hope you're doing well.
Can we all agree the fact that Florence makes sound 21st century problems like if they were from the renaissance age?
It’s pure artistry
YAS
Right, every time she mentions NY or London; I'm like, ow this is a true story? If she ever writes a book; I'll be the first in lines.
Mauro Soto Bravo I think the things she sings about in this song are issues humans have always struggled with regardless of what century they existed in.
Yesssss👌👌
"You make a fool of death with your beauty..." Who writes poetry like that? I'm a 53 year old man who's largely into Death Metal and other extreme genres of music and I get emotional and tear-eyed listening to Florence. Furthermore, I have a home studio and make music, but when I listen to Florence + The Machine, I suddenly feel quite devoid of any talent. She's a true artist who can touch the soul and make (at least some of us) more desiring of living our lives to the fullest. She's a phenomenon.
I once wrote a short story for my friend based on something that he said to me, when I asked him for suggestions for a memorable line. The comment was "Every saint has a past, and every sinner has a future. Mover sinner!". My buddy isn't exactly the poetic type, but he has his moments, and I'm sure you've had yours too.
You sir, made my heart smile.
this is one of my favorite comments in youtube history.
Beautifully stated.
This is from Billboard:
"This song is about the ways we look for love in things that are perhaps not love, and how attempts to feel less alone can sometimes isolate us more,” Florence Welch says of the new track. “I guess I made myself more vulnerable in this song to encourage connection, because perhaps a lot more of us feel this way than we are able to admit. Sometimes when you can’t say it, you can sing it.”
"when you can't say it, you can sing it" Really accurate ❤❤❤
Yasmin Alves Yes it is! ♥️
Only your love will ever satisfy my hunger Jo!
Ahahahahhh!!!!!! ..............................please.........
This just made me cry in the best way!
I love When she dances. She REALLY shows the freedom and peace. She is by far one of the best dancers. She expresses so much feeling and emotion When she dances.
For me this song is about being insecure about your "imperfections" and thinking that people wont like the way you are, so you distance yourself from them and just sit in your room alone("looking at you phone"). I think shes talking to her young self, what she thought was love and the way she couldnt really get it, only from drugs and from strangers when being on stage. She resticted herself because of that thought of being rejected, but now shes free(you ca even see that from the way she dances, its so free, emotional and just for herself, without caring about what anyone thinks), she learned how to love herself. Hunger is representation of desire of love(or strive to perfection),and we dont have to starve ourselves in fear, we can love ourselves and well find that some people like us just the way we are...
the video club reminds of sarah baartman:s story
@Mariel Ramirez It's clearly not only about that, even though we all know Florence's problems with eating disorders
Lol. Not only about that
we didnt have phones like that when we were young.. we stared and landlines hoping for ghost to call but had no access to communication like we do today
OK but then how come she said - "how many people need to die so that you can feel loved"?

hunger is literally the best pop bop ever written. the violin? the drum kicks? the piano? THE CLAPS? like 3 different shouting choruses? the way you use your! body! baby! my wig peaced out a long time ago for this Woman but she really outdid herself with this one

pop..... bop??? Oh yes the violins and drum "kicks" were all the rage during the pop bop era. I remember the big bopper using such things. Let us now speak about "THE CLAPS!" AND SHOUTING CHORUSES?!! o.... m....g......... pfffftttt
The beauty about the statue in this video, if you look at it, is that it's gender is mixed. It has both feminine and masculine features, and it is also "broken." Around it are statues of men in the background, with very beautifully carved masculine features, but this statue stands alone and it's a perfect example of sexual awakening. The yearn to be different, to expose that hunger and *feel* it. What a poetic scene to see....
A beautiful sentiment but the statues in the background are mostly of women.
@@TheriusT there are actually 2 different shots with other statues, one with all male, the other all female
It's not just that the statue is broken, it's "wounded" in the side and on the palms. The statue is supposed to be Jesus. Hence why in the latter half of the video the statue is at the center of s many scenes of worship.
It's also important to note that the statue isn't so much gender mixed as...portraying Jesus as a trans man.
Listen, for a couple centuries now, the mythology is that Jesus was born of Mary, who was unmarried and in these recent centuries did not conceive Jesus with a man. So unless God worked a Miracle Y chromosome (or androgen sensitivity), any child produced by parthenogenesis is going to be X0, XX, XXX, etc. and more than likely AFAB. But we also know from the same tradition that Jesus was a man.
and this is a pretty reasonable reading given how much queerness of other kinds are on display in the video (pretty much no one aside from a few scattered characters in the beginning aren't coded as some sort of Queer, so strongly it's barely even subtext). We're meant to understand the Queerness suffused throughout the work.
@@xovvo3950 oh my god you just gave me a whole new perspective on this mv and it made me love it even more 😩 that's such a cool way to look at it and as a queer person myself it feels special. thank you!

As an anorexia survivor, I can relate... This song hit me hard the first time I heard it. Just by listening the beginning: "At 17 i started to starve myself/ I thought that love was a kind of emptiness". I suffered from anorexia for 3 years of my life, and I remember that period as the worst I've ever experienced in my entire existence. The way she dances in the video reminds me of the liberating sensation I felt when I was fully healed. When I started to love myself again, free in mind from unhealthy thoughts, seeing myself as a bird, able to fly again, far in the distance from the mental cage I built with my own hands.
A beautiful song that means a lot to me and to many people out there.
I love Florence ❤️

fortunately for us, yeah she's real.
For some reason I'm always anxious when she releases something new and I don't know why because I'm NEVER disappointed. I'm very attached to the Lungs and Ceremonials eras and I always fear that her music is going to loose that magical, ethereal feeling at some point (wasn't sure about HBHBHB at first) but somehow it's always there, even when she explores a completely different style. What this means?
Luke Official it's like you know someone and in your mind you just assume that death will never touch them because it can't be possible to lose someone that beautiful or someone that important.
This video is obviously about Jesus the Christ. “Death, where is your sting?” Jesus conquered death by “using his body” to be the ultimate sacrifice atoning for all mankind’s sins. Jesus tells us not worry.

We all have a hunger
Tell me what you need, oh, you look so free
The way you use your body, baby, come on and work it for me
Don't let it get you down, you're the best thing I've seen
We never found the answer but we knew one thing
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
And it's friday night and it's kicking in
And I can't dress, they're gonna crucify me
Oh, you and all your vibrant youths
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty, and for a moment
I thought love was in the drugs and the more I took
The more I took away and I could never get enough
I thought love was on the stage
You give yourself to strangers
You don't have to be afraid
Then it tries to find a home with people and I'm alone
Picking it apart and staring at your phone
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
Tell me what you need, oh, you look so free
The way you use your body, baby, come on and work it for me
Don't let it get you down, you're the best thing I've seen
We never found the answer but we knew one thing
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
We all have a hunger
And it's friday night and it's kicking in
And I can't dress, they're gonna crucify me
Oh, you and all your vibrant youths
How could anything bad ever happen to you?
You make a fool of death with your beauty, and for a moment
I forget to worry

Florence and the machine is waaaaaay beyond or separated from any band right now. Florence Welch still does her own thing as she keeps on sounding so original and her voice is just the cherry in top the cake :)
Antonio Torres Finally! Thank you!
It kinda bugs me that a lot of people on the internet are too oblivious that Florence + the machine is a band, NOT a solo artist. She's with five other members. Yes, I love everything about Florence and the music they arranged together as a group. Looking forward to THEIR fourth album, "High as Hope", which is set to release on June 29th. 😍😊
@@05Sun08OlympiaLuna I realize this is a year later, but how can anyone be confused about that? The band is literally called Florence AND the Machine.
Incredible. Cinematography is amazing.
Peyton Z Peltier lol remember its supposed to be a song. Not a movie.
Sam Ashkenazy Yes, but the cinematography is amazing. 🔥
i stopped breathing for a sec at 2:50
I went throgh some very rough times in 2019 and was in a constant state of sorrow and hopelesness. Thankfully, many things and people helped me get through those awful months. But whenever I was alone and this song popped, and Florence sang 'don't let them get you down, you're the best thing I've seen' it felt like a hug from an old friend. Even now, two years after that I get tears in my eyes writing this and remembering all that. I just wanted to say thank you, that was a much needed hug.
The fact that she starts the song with THAT LINE. I love music
Florence nem é gente, é anjo.
Ritiele Façanha Florence nem é anjo, é uma Deusa
Florence nem é uma Deusa, é Nirvana.
Buia Junior Florence nem é nirvana é Florence
Fada
Isso aê
Florence + the Machine literally cannot disappoint, SO good!!
We love mother witch
Yes we certainly do 😉
Sure. I win my day with this song!
Matt Masters true that 👌 disappointment is not in her vocabulary
ayyyy marina and the devil and matt masters
This is Art
3 years of this masterpiece
everything this band does touches me on a spiritual religious level
This album cannot have come at a better time. Thank you Florence... God bless you.
Leoar Dulnuan completely agree with this
So charming, spiritual, deep. This is Florence and the Machine😊
I put this music to dance to it when i need it. I danced to it while studying for the entry exam for college, I danced to it when I got accepted, I danced to it when I needed strength to carry on and today I dance to it before the last exam of college. Thank you Florence.
florence is a living work of art
totes true 💕

Is this a quote from somewhere? I feel like I've heard or read it before. Sounds like thoughts on God perhaps?
Morta feat. Enterrada, o tiro foi certeiro.
I always thought she said "I wont let anything bad ever happen to you" and I'm still going to sing that.
I was watching Ratched on Netflix (episode 3), and I noticed the house seem similar with where florence shot this video - and here I am rewatching this MV to make sure. And yes, its exactly the same house!
Do u know the house name? Or where it is??
@@joseluisbenllochgarcia688 It is Tony Duquette's Dawnridge, I think its in LA
This song gives me a hunger for more music from Flo...cannot wait for the album!
florence keeps me alive everyday. she describes emotions that i never heard conveyed in music or even words and helps me feel less alone. thank you
The amount of times I listened to this song just to feel a little better is unreal
SO MUCH LUNGS VIBES **CRYING**
its reminds me "tear out my tounge", an unreleased song (pre-Lungs)
I got really strong Lungs vibes off it too!
[Intro]
Ooh, ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh
[Verse 1]
At seventeen, I started to starve myself
I thought that love was a kind of emptiness
And at least I understood then the hunger I felt
And I didn't have to call it loneliness

My pleasure!
4:03 "How could anything bad ever happen to you.... you make a fool of death with your beauty..."
she was a strong reason that saved me from my childhood trauma, ED, suicidal thoughts + deaths and suicides of close people around me, and much more. so, thank you and thank God for your existence Florence, you mean a lot to me and to many people in this world.
Love Florence 🙏
Vai entrando, Florence, na minha casa, abençoando meu lar e aquebrantando toda maldição
Amém.

Abençoou todah.

It's amazing to see how she has evolved personally and musically after being in the scene for almost 10 years. The best thing about this song is the fact how it contains the lively vocals of "Lungs", the darker lyricism of "Ceremonials", and the organic production of "HBHBHB"; complimented by a newfound maturity in her presence. Florence is finally back to bless us with some great music...! ♥
We all have a hunger. But what is it that really fills you?
That's what I got from this song.

yes ma'am - Thank you. ❤️
always starts with an "oh, oh"
Are we sure about these lyrics? "And I can't dress" sounds like "In this pink dress" to me.

I remember running at night through the rain to this song, always dreaming I was someone else.
i can relate to it badly
I did this too.
Same, her song are so powerful, they gave energy so i go for a run;)
How beautiful! Keep dreaming... someday that person you see as "someone else" can become You. :)
Lol
I listened this song constantly when my father died. Thank you, you helped me a lot.
You make a fool of death with your beauty. Forever a haunting line.
I have connected to Florences journey though music in a way I have never done with any other artist - in so many ways she has mirrored my emotion, my turmoil, my hope. I absolutely love that feeling.
Corey Mulholland dude, same!
omg thank you for saying it.. i feel the same way
Are we getting another short film for this era? Oh no, I AIN'T READY QUEEEEENNNNNN 😭😭😭
I HOPE SO!
That quote at the end though,
This whole thing is so beautiful
3:58 notice she’s recreating the famous crucifix painting
There’s something in Florence and the Machine’s music that’s almost like a flame being lit in your chest that never fails to gives you a rush of adrenaline.
Oh my ! I was just thinking the same ! That is so true 😍
That’s a perfect description
I am 67 and it gives me such a feel good feeling even at my age!
So aptly put!
you just put in words my feelings 😉
"I thought love was some kind of emptiness" and "You make a fool of death with your beauty"
*BEAUTIFUL LYRICS*
I don't really understand what she means with that about love being emptiness. Because I thought that hunger was related to sexual desire but then she started to talk about love in drugs and love in the stage and I get that the meaning is deeper than that, but I still don't understand what does she mean with "I thought love was some kind of emptiness". Emptiness because you don't find somebody? or because you don't love you? Like if she was seeking for love and that was her hunger?
Its all metaphoric, What it means to you might mean something else to another. Think of it like Seal's lyrics, all very subjective
KGP0075 Yes that's why I ask. I wanna know what you think the meanning is, because sometimes people understand different things in the songs because they lived different things than you have, and that way you have like a million different ideas and meannings of the same song and I don't know, I just like that 😁
SuperCelia2 hmmm just a guess but maybe before she had no real concept of love... she had only seen love as abuse or lust or the false love she talked about on stage. So it was empty to her, something that required her to give something inside her away.
i think that because she writes about an eating disorder right before that line, i imagine that self-love to her was being hungry, being LITERALLY empty of food. love was being empty. that might just be surface level but the deeper meaning could be one of the interpretations above :)
