If anyone's anything like me and can't rest until the little hidden meanings are understood, this is what the director has said: “It’s about the power the darkness of longing can give you when you embrace your inner beast alone.... Women who bond themselves together like this, and rise up together like this, are usually accused of being witches, so I wanted to explore that. I also wanted to create an abstraction of Florence as if every woman was a small piece of glass that had shattered inside her. Now they join her outside her body and fight with her, love with her, go to war with her" For the witches reference, take a look at the painting by Goya called 'Witches’ Flight' :)
I like this interpretation, because I always feel like "witch" is a word that is historically misused and when it is used it is used derogatorily at women. I'm familiar with the paint by Goya. I very much remember from a class I currently teach called The Theology of Rebellion in Colonial Jamaica and a woman known as the "Nanny, Queen of the Maroons" who apparently sustained over 17 gunshots by some accounts and kept fighting with her hack blade against the British who mercilessly abused and enslaved the black population on the island. Even so, the Nanny fought alongside "her boys" and she didn't fight for black women alone - she certainly wasn't fighting for white women who were all too comfortable with watching the abuse the slaves endured - she was fighting for the black men and women. She was of a single mind in some sense, she had to kill to save her people, her fellow black slaves who were held captive and tortured by British men and women alike. The theology of it all comes into question when we start discussing a sort of witchcraft that is actually banned in Jamaica called Obeah, and it exists in some other Caribbean nations, but Jamaica is known for banning a large book (which I own for the purpose of studying) common called The Obeah Bible, which gives very precise instructions on how to perform rituals and other rites that call upon spirits to harm others, often during the victim's sleep, the astral body is attacked and when the person wakes the damage done is real and so some people attributed the power of the Nanny to Obeah, but this is a conversation for another day and another time. Obeah is less influenced by Catholicism because Britain infamously followed in the footsteps of the murderous King Henry VIII and now the Anglican community, in all of its disarray, is very divided between The Anglican bishops of Africa, where the faith and practice of followers closely resembles Catholicism much more than what is referred to as the American branch or the Episcopal community, which many of the African bishops have condemned as being unfaithful to the teachings of Christ. All these things tie into together, but I can't give the syllabus for the class on youtube or you would despise me all the more; however, I can simply say that my point here is that while I appreciate this explication, it forgets that women and men need each other and separatism has never worked for any person or peoples. Even St. Anthony the Hermit had to make his way to the nearest Egyptian town every so often to obtain some supplies for daily life. The part about embracing your inner beast is perhaps poorly worded, because I'm trying to give you the benefit of doubt here - but if you can't explain that a bit more, I would rip that apart as preposterous.

ART ART ART.... every single minute! ~ The lyrics ~ The Choreo ~ The music ~ The costumes ~ The scenery !! Congrats to all who have worked on this MASTERPIECE!!
I love the deep symbolism that is rooted in this video. From what I see, the water symbolises feminine energy and power. Water in many cultures is traditionally seen as a life giving and nurturing entity which is why it is associated with women in particular. The women dancing together symbolises their female bond and sisterhood which is strengthened by the presence of the water; but to outside eyes, their bond is alarming to some (especially to males), so they are wrongly and dangerously labelled as witches and persecuted.
Love your interpretation! I had not thought of all the symbolism involving water here. But, it reminds me of an interview Florence did, where she said she was told by her record label/manager (I forget exactly whom) to stop writing songs about the water...given your interpretation, I don't want her to ever stop using the imagery of water in her art!
@@kaylycoleman9956 "Water is a good way to describe something that feels so large and out of your control that you couldn’t put it in words. It’s so big a force, but it’s not malicious; it’s this kind of unknown thing. Because I think I feel things in quite a big way, a lot of times." That's what Florence said about her imagery of water. The song is about a break up in which Florence needs a "Big God" to help her handle her emotions, since they are too strong to handle. So I guess the water symbolises her emotions as she describes both as very powerful things which are very hard to handle
Hmmm.. sounds like ur still so sheltered in ur female privilege that ur blind from true gender equality that modern feminism ignores to get more privileges than they already have
Magic and haunting, they look like the chorists from a Greek tragedy, and Florence is the tragic heroine dominating the scene with her presence. I love when the dancers fly and stay suspended on her head.
Normally not a big fan of dance, but this video... words just escape me, wow. Evocative and so on point for the song. It's nine women dancing in a puddle, but manages to be a transcendent work of art. Big kudos to Autumn De Wilde and the rest of the team that produced this video.
@@Hotarubi-dono also because in many religions and cultures water is seen as feminine energy and power. It is seen a motherly and life giving thing, which it why is is associated with women in particular. But, like i said, they are doing for themselves, which almost completely eradicates the male gaze. This video is packed full of feminism.

Why stop at one? But no, seriously they miscategorize and give it to popular people instead of talented artists.
Okay this might be my new favourite Florence music video
I can't say there is only one fav...
Just the simplicity, the colours. Idk it's just really aesthetically pleasing and suits the mood, kinda also reminds me of drumming song with the backup dancers
It is for sure!
Asome video!
So dark and sexi we stan
Can we please take a moment and appreciate the fact that the comment section of this video has to be one of the most peaceful and funny parts of youtube?
whoever made this choreography deserves nobel price.
In my opinion, this song evokes a little sadness, a little pain, and a little anger. It is pure art.
Petition to make Florence Welch the patron saint of ghosted lovers
YESSSSS
I read this as patreon saint 🤣🤭
Honestly she should be.
that's sad though..
St Welch
I can't stop watching this. Amazing, powerful, raw, female energy!
Yass queen slayy
when we give ourselves entirely to the spirit of the dance, it becomes our prayer
the aesthetics! the colours! the cinema!
This is why we need art. To feel emotions we've never felt.
powerfullykot you're so gay
Joshua Higgs i'm soooo gay too. any problem?
so flawless and that growl in her throat has me posessed
ART ART ART.... every single minute! ~ The lyrics ~ The Choreo ~ The music ~ The costumes ~ The scenery !! Congrats to all who have worked on this MASTERPIECE!!
Such an amazing song and video! So excited for the album it’s coming out so soon!!
this video confirms Florence is a modern-day witch.
tf?
i wonder what coven she’d be a part of...
i’m convinced
Its been known. She has her own coven im sure. She is magnificent.
Me too
I love the deep symbolism that is rooted in this video.
Absolutely love this interpretation! 🖤
@Malhab 😂😂😂
@@kaylycoleman9956 "Water is a good way to describe something that feels so large and out of your control that you couldn’t put it in words. It’s so big a force, but it’s not malicious; it’s this kind of unknown thing. Because I think I feel things in quite a big way, a lot of times."
That's what Florence said about her imagery of water. The song is about a break up in which Florence needs a "Big God" to help her handle her emotions, since they are too strong to handle. So I guess the water symbolises her emotions as she describes both as very powerful things which are very hard to handle
Hmmm.. sounds like ur still so sheltered in ur female privilege that ur blind from true gender equality that modern feminism ignores to get more privileges than they already have
She is pure divine feminine and it’s so powerful and beautiful to see her and hear her express it! Phenomenal 🙌🏼
So that's what the water gave her.
gumyumgirl I actually laughed out loud 👏👏👏
Delete omg
I'M ACTUALLY CRYING
i love you
This made me laugh so hard. Thank you.
And here I thought Hunger wouldn't be topped. Florence is really an amazing composer
This song and dance feel so beautifully ancient.
💫 The high as hope era is already so iconic 💫
I agree! So so stoked.
Magic and haunting, they look like the chorists from a Greek tragedy, and Florence is the tragic heroine dominating the scene with her presence. I love when the dancers fly and stay suspended on her head.
Matteo Cardillo it's a reference to a painting: Witches Flight by Goya. Look it up ❤
This song deserves a Grammy
they should've give FATM grammys since their first album lungs!
I'll Be Myself right?!
*she* needs a grammy
Grammy's are overrated, BRITs is what she needs again...
THE ALBUM DESERVES A GRAMMY
This makes me wanna start contemporary dancing again so badly - so much soul in her art 🦋
Wow. *Somehow it conveyed a macabre ambience without gory, blood soaked scenes.* Kudos to the director, those fantastic dancers and singer/artist.
The more I watch this the more obsessed I grow with the song
I'm they're too
Same, this is only the second song I’ve heard from her and I’m obsessed
@@HilderJay19 I hope you will listen to all of them!
Idk why ignored this song when i heard it but then 1 month later my brain changes its mind and now I'm obsessed
This choreography is amazing with this song. What a perfectly executed video
The vocals, the lyrics, the visuals, the feelings are all so beautiful.
The coven witches and their powerful supreme performing the seven wonder we all stan.
hahahahhahahaaha i love this
So wish they used this in coven!!! 😍
This was super witchy and I love it
don`t touch, it´s art
Normally not a big fan of dance, but this video... words just escape me, wow. Evocative and so on point for the song. It's nine women dancing in a puddle, but manages to be a transcendent work of art. Big kudos to Autumn De Wilde and the rest of the team that produced this video.
THE DEFINITION OF ART
Witchcraft is the most fun a girl can have
Without taking her clothes off?
@@haggisa but its better if she does
yes ostracising your self from society must be fun
Did you build the house you are living in?
@@GeckoCityUK you dont get invited to many parties, do you, buddy?
100 years from now this album should be in a museum of 21st century art...
This song gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. She’s literally a musical witch and I am here for it.
All Hail Florence, our new Supreme!
Watching these ladies bouncing around is so mesmerizing.
So powerful the synchronicity of their moves is giving me chills
Vanja Aragovic soooo haunting
Mermbo Nermberferv i dont know to be honest but i love it
Cat Person good for you haha
This video is criminally underrated. Feminist, pagan masterpiece.
.
..
Why is it feminist?
@@Hotarubi-dono because it completely eradicates the male gaze. Florence made this video for her, and that in itself is feminism.
@@Hotarubi-dono also because in many religions and cultures water is seen as feminine energy and power. It is seen a motherly and life giving thing, which it why is is associated with women in particular. The women dancing together symbolises their sisterhood which is strengthened by the water, but to outside eyes, especially males, it it seen as wrong. But, like i said, they are doing for themselves, which almost completely eradicates the male gaze. This video is packed full of feminism.
What even is Florence Welch? This is magic. Pure magic.
Nice of the ghost from Grudge to lend its voice to the end of this song!
RABtoons LOL
RABtoons hahaha my thoughts exactly 😂
JajajJjaj
I first thought of the same comparison from 02:49 with the hair in front of the faces, the end simply sealed it for me!
Lol I was gonna say that
One of the most beautiful, eerie, and powerful performances I've ever seen. Gorgeous
*This music video is epic!*

the choreographer for this video is a GENiUS !
The choreographer in this is Florence and some other dude... Soooo... Tell us something we didn’t already know.
@@DC-df8vk that "some other dude" is Akram Khan, one of the top choreographers in the dance world. Florence is amazing as a dancer, but he's the one who took her nad genius and interpreted it as a group number.
There's nothing like watching a Florence video for the very first time. No words for this, I'm still assimilating this masterpiece
She wrote this because someone didn’t return her text.. & this fact made me love her so much more.
Fernando Mikell they did not reply cause probably they were terrified haha
And now they can't reply because they've been turned into a llama or something.
Lmaoooooo omg

Damn it, I just looked it up and you're right. It's just like "Delilah" I hear the lyrics and watch the video and form all these deep allusions and metaphors and then find out it's a millennial problem like this (She wrote Delilah after waiting for a boy to call her while on vacation) haha I love her so much. She can make the most mundane, "first world problem" into such a hauntingly beautiful poetic journey!
This.Is.The.Best.Music. Video.I.Have.Ever.Seen...
Joanna Κat Well said,Miss Kat.Cheers.
Joanna Κat it's good...but hardly the " best ever music video"
Indeed I feel under some kind of spell everytime I have watched it
Joanna Κat ofc it is. It’s Florence.
Galactic Banana did i say anything about HER taste in music?.. Did i say the video was total shit?.. No...but it is not " the best music video of all time ever" is it. Ok for her it may be but that just means she has a very limited music taste.
The dancing alone is stunning but then adding the Water .. 😍

You are big enough to hold our love, Florence Welch!
When you watch this, even if you're not a fan of this genre, you know you're watching something amazing. It's just that special kind of sound and profound talent that you wish popular artists actually had. This sound is incredible.
I love the ferocious beauty of this. Some powerful magic.
Amazing. Her best yet.
Anyone else can hear this as a Bond theme song? The ending especially!
also Westworld :)
