The crucible is a play about the Salem Witch Trials, but it HEAVILY dramatizes a lot of the things that happened for the sake of bringing a message across, this song also uses a similar technique in the lyrics.

When he is accused he is to before the town and confess his sins. Of course, John is innocent and therefore he tells that God is dead. Probably the most powerful scene in the play. And that is where they got the soundbite from in the final breakdown of the song. And this isnt a guess or anything I was friends with Chris over Myspace back when MIW were lesser known and we used to discuss the meanings of a few songs.
