OCM...I owned and operated a Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram store for 33 years and am now retired. As such, I have bought a number of cars since retirement...including a good number of Vipers and various Hellcats along with the normal Minivans, etc. I am sorry to admit that I have run into stores that, even knowing I was a retired dealer, tried to pull stunts along the line of what you were outlining but thankfully not to that extreme. In most cases we were able to work around those instances and to be fair. some dealerships were great just as you have found in your own experiences buying cars. It does take some of the fun out of what should be a wonderful experience in buying a new car. We did not operate that way due to our outlook on business plus being in a small town where we would run into our customers at church, at the grocery store, at community events...and didn't want to have to live with a less than stellar reputation. I have been amazed at how certain big stores operate and that may be due to the pressures of competition but on balance, most professional car people and dealerships are trying to do it right and they do need to turn a profit to afford these big facilities and to service you after the sale through service, parts, body shop, etc. The point being, just be calm and keep your wits about you and look at the numbers carefully and you will generally make the right decision and wind up with a car you love.

It may seem like a stretch, but you can contact the manufacturers if your experience with a dealer is bad enough; it happened to a Toyota dealer near me enough times that the GM and sales staff got replaced. Individually, our complaints go nowhere, but they do add up, and you're (eventually) saving someone else the stress of a bad car deal.
    Thanks for the video, OC.

Its has taken me many cars and many learning experiences to walk away. Being a car guy it is sometimes tough but it needs to happen in order to protect yourself and your future. There is always another car and salesman like that are the worst. As a salesman (not car salesman) i am trained to overcome objections, hit on pain points and divert conversations when they focus on price. The difference between me and “them” is i have a conscience. I have learned to sell through helping customers instead of swift tactics. I pull those tactics out when it is something that really does help the customer but they have trouble seeing it. At no point do i disrespect them and I believe that is why i have been fortunate to retain customers for many years. I hope you can find a ride for her by Christmas as that would be a pretty awesome ride. Regardless i will wish you the best of luck and have a great holiday season with your family!

I can't believe how bad these salespeople are. I wonder why the other customer backed out of the deal lol. I'm sure they told him he could have it at MSRP, but once it got delivered they threw on the markups and scared him away. I'm glad to see people are backing out of deals because of markups. people need to stop paying them!

Before I purchase a vehicle, I shop banks and credit unions for finance rates.
Then I go looking, I will talk to various salespersons. It is very easy to determine the BS'ers and eliminate them from the future...
When I find a vehicle I want, I tell the salesperson to give me the bottom line price. I told one sales person that I would walk if the sales mngr was contacted a second time. As he got up, the second time, I got up and left. There are other dealers that will understand....
Then I ask about dealer or manufacturer financing.
At that point, I choose where to finance and make the purchase.

My last few purchases, 2 Jeep GC's and a Challenger over the past 6 years were actually the best experiences I ever had when purchasing a vehicle, and all three from the same Dodge dealership... I spent more time test driving than having to sit around while salesmen/management spoke behind closed doors. My Challenger this past summer... I was in and out, driving it home in about 20 minutes (not counting the test drive). I've had bad experiences with both GM and Ford, taking up my entire day with similar tactics you describe here.

I can so emotionally relate to this video. Just 2 days ago 11/25/2022 I went to Huntington beach dodge to pick up my special order WB Scat pack. Waited 4 months for it. So got there, test drive the Scat and loved it. So I said let me get the total out the door and I'm going to finance through orange county credit union. He said we cant do that, we only finance in house, we dont do credit unions. I wanted to do the credit union cause they would offer 5.59 % for 84 months. I pay my vehicle off in 2 years so not worried about intrest so much. Just like the lower payment if you ever have a bad month. I said ok let's do the credit No Dealer Mark Up. So finance guy came back and said ok we got you for 8.9 % at 1351 a monthly. Car was 63850 MSRP. I said what's my credit score knowing it before hand, he said 740..... I laughed and said please. He said intrest rate have gone up it's out of my hands. I said that why I wanted to go with my credit union. He said hold on I will get a better rate. Waited 1 hr. Got up with my wife and son and told the fiance guy sorry but I'm not interested anymore. He said ooooohhhhh I was just going to show you I got 5.99% from your credit union at 1088.86 a month. My wife said can get the monthly payment to950 and we got a deal 0 downpayment. I know it could be done and they were mad cause I didn't want to put one down. So the fiance manager Asad manzhar pulled the paper from The sales associate chris and and raised his voice at my wife and said No,No,No your wasting my time and you guys can leave just get out of here. We where in complete shock!!!!! He was so disrespectful!!!! In front to my family while other sales associate and customers were watching. I cant believe they would really lose a sale for ego. I called and left a message to the store manager Mike Harrington and he has not got back to me. I really wanted this vehicle but, to be disrespected like that was just ASTONISHING!!!!! Thanks for your video and any suggestions that I can do on my behalf would be great!!!

Dont forget about the market adjustment price! You might see msrp pricing listed online, but depending on the dealer, they will have that in there as well.
If you don't feel like going toe to toe with them, try using a company discount, or car buying discount program through insurance or a membership (ie Sams/Costco) if either offers it.

Man unbelievable! Very horrible experience to go through. You definitely sensed the red flags in the beginning. I love toyota vehicles but these dealships can ruin a joyful buying experience. Buying a new car should be an exciting and fun experience. I want to buy a new Toyota Tundra but after hearing this I will definitely skip going to Ontario. I use to go their for service a long time ago but with all these dealers marking up and trying to weasel in extra services I was fed up. It cause me to start trying my own maintenance just to avoid them. Maybe check out Longo Toyota in El Monte. They seem to have good reviews. I would love to see a toyota supra on the channel! They are very nice cars. Good luck on the vehicle search and hope you can find a deal on a supra! Toyota gonna keep making supras so definitely no need to rush! They are not rare cars right now. Thanks for sharing this! I'm definitely going to avoid that dealer.

I never worry about the payment or ask them for the math. I just want the OTD price with a breakdown of vehicle price, tax, and any extra fees. If we can't agree on that, then I'm out. If we do agree then we talk about their finance options. But before I walk in a dealer, I already know around what APR I expect and round about how much I'm willing to finance. You never tell them what you make or how much you want your payment before you have agreed on the OTD price. I also say I'm not trading anything in.

Funny though, I was looking at the Supra for mom too! (family is important to a car guy). That or the GR86 in that...Orange package (I keep calling it Hemi Orange LOL...brain is stuck in Hemi gears).
The Toyota dealer we have is pretty unscrupulous too, Honda is worse. Probably going to end up with a V6 Dodge, but get it with the red interior, and do an interior swap on the 6sp, because were paying for that anyway...might as well get the interior and do a cool video on the swap. I was also in the market for a 2.0 Red 2023 Supra and test drove one just 7 miles from my home here in Tampa. Msrp was $45k, but they were also asking me for 1,100+ a month for 84 months! They were telling me my trade-in was putting me in the negative. I bought my 2012 Jaguar XK coupe a few months prior with 52k miles from a retail Toyota dealership. I felt that I bought low at 26k, I owe 24k now, and the chances of finding my low mile well kept Jaguar in the twenties nationwide is an act of god. Their estimates for my trade show in the mid teens. They had market adjustments pricing for the Supra at $7 k calling it a protection package, their $1,195 dealer fee, and because of the low trade value my higher taxable amount showed with the higher price. I really like the Supra, but with no dynamic / adaptive cruise control on the 2.0 it was an additional deal breaker.

OC, I had a similar experience with a Toyota dealership in Orlando a little over a year ago before car prices started going haywire in Florida. The short story, I was helping my son get his first car and the salesperson was so arrogant, he became more arrogant when I called him out on his BS. The sales person added things that were not on the addendum and tried to sell it to me as if I had no choice but to accept it. I worked in the car business and like you I have bought about 12 cars in my lifetime. Normally I walk away but this salesperson was such an arrogant prick I had to give this sales person a piece of my mind while still being respectful to the people around me. There was a few customers who witnessed it and one couple walked out when I did and spoke with me in the parking lot. They too thanked me as my salesperson was also working with them and they felt awkward dealing him. That night I wrote a scathing review on Google and the dealership's website. I normally don't write bad reviews because nobody is perfect but in this case I had to. Everyone from the dealership called me and I was completely honest with them, I would only by a Toyota from them if Hell froze over. In the end, it worked out, the next day while at a diiferent brand car dealership I let the sales manager listen to my final conversation with the Toyota GM ( doubt if he was really the GM, couldnt find his name on the dealership website). Even the sales manager was appalled by the justifications attempted to be fed to me by the Toyota dealership. The sales manager spoke with the owner of the dealership I was at who just so happen to be their that day. They showed me the price of the car after tax, title and fees which we were very happy with the price and then they showed us with zeroes next to it 3 years of free oil changes instead of the normal one year. The different brand dealer went way out of their way to be completely transparent and they made my sons first car-buying experience a great one! Toyotas are really good cars but when you want to buy one shop not only for the car but shop the dealership.

Never disclose any financial info about yourself prior to coming to terms on a deal. I never fill out a credit app until we have agreed to the numbers. I can understand the drivers license release but only if I am test driving the car. When the deal is done, I disclose my SS# (for FICO) and other relevant info (usually w/the Finance Manager).

    Hello Mr. OCM,
Thank you for all the video's and your good advice. From what I can see, you are a genuine person that is smart, positive, humble and has integrity and honor. I am a car guy also. I have a 2020 Challenger Scat Pack Widebody. I currently owe about $64,000 on it because in May this year, I traded-in My 2021 WRX for a 2021 Charger Scat Pack Standardbody and then I traded-in the Charger for the Challenger 3 weeks later. Doing these multiple trade-ins within a couple of month's ended-up putting me in the hole about $9,000. I really like my Scat Pack, but I really want to get a Hellcat Widebody now. My plan is to get one next year. Can you please give me your advice and tell me how you would go about doing this and when you think I should do it?
    Best Regards,
    Lou

She still runs strong and probably will run her till the wheels falls off. I have an amortization calculator pulled up on my phone before I talk interest rates and payments. They drop a lot of the games when I can pull my own numbers. I usually make out alright except on one deal, the dealer added the "dealer fee" at $400 after we negotiated a price to be inclusive of all profit and overhead. I failed to catch that before signing.

to think I almost became a car salesman 7 years ago, I would never have sold like that. When I worked for sales at Time Warner Cable they always had me take classes and watch videos on how to sell better and what to say etc. I threw all that out the window and sold MY way and guess what...? I was the top seller for 5 years in my area! People would always come into the cable store and ask for me or wait specifically for me to help them out. not only did I sell them and put everything out there they needed to know but they when they needed explaining of a bill or had a issue I was there. I did have one instance where I did do something I regret and when someone was yelling at me as to why their cable service was turned off due to non payment they got mad at me for doing. So as they were leaving yelling at me in front of 10 people in line I yelled back if you would have paid you bill your service would have been on lol. Well ya that wasnt the professional thing to do, but hey I was 24. Anyways, glad you walked away from that guy. I have a hookup here at I10Dodge in Indio for cars now if you ever need to get MSRP on something. Let me know, thanks!

Yes Sir it’s down right disrespectful at certain dealerships. I was talking this week to a salesman at a dealership I bought a car from 6 months ago. When I bought the first car I let them know I needed a second in a different color. Called me this week with news of a allocation change. This color is number 3 on my list. Wanted me to put 5K down. Turns out to be the mark up. Basically said the same thing. Someone is going to buy it. Sad thing is I sat aside 10K for the down payment at MSRP. I walked away and let them know there is zero costumer loyalty. This wrestling match was over a Sonata Hybrid Limited. Not sending a child to collage with a high car payment. I’ve bout 10 cars in the last 25 years. I told them good luck.

Can I get some discount on the price ? sorry sir that's the price as we can sell as many as we can get so I agreed to pay exactly the price on the screen. I was happy it was a good price for the car, I had done my research before so I knew what they were selling for. Only add on was paint protection. Deal done within half an hour, all happy. Never ever set foot on a dealers lot until u have the deal done in writing via e mail. They will try and text, dont text. They will compell u to come in. Dont do it. Make sure u get a line by line break down of everything. Not just a price. Or payment. Be ready to go to another dealer. Be ready to walk even after the paper work is in process of being signed in finance. Check and recheck every line. Car dealers are some of the lowest of low. And if they insult u, get up and walk.

I’m coming up on buying a scat pack or a hellcat charger. Wanted a zl1 1le but finances dictate that what I buy should be my only car. From what you know, should I wait 6-12 months? Used or new? That’s what I’ve been thinking myself. From your experience with regards to resale, hellcat or scat pack? 15-20k seems like a lot to pay for the extra hp, I’m just not familiar enough with dodge to make that judgement, but having four doors is a necessity because I have a 3 year old and it’s going to be my only vehicle for a while. I only plan on keeping it for around 2 years and then ultimately would like to jump into the Camaro

To all car salespeople: Treat your customers like you would want to be treated and don't lie to them. You've really got to do your homework, know what your trade-in is worth, what your payments should be at a given percentage and, in general, know more than the salesperson does before you walk in the dealership. It's sad that this slime is working for them or they wouldn't do it.
