  • A Dealership technician shares Crazy dealership stories from the inside you haven't heard before! These are not your typical dealership horror stories. these are stories from the inside out.
Per request of my awesome viewers and to mix up my content. Here is the 4th installment of Dealership Stories from the inside out!
This is the Service Loaner\courtesy car edition!
Working at a car dealership and dealing with hundreds of people and their cars as my full time job as a Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician is.... Interesting to say the least. While most people that come to a dealership come with good intentions and treat everyone with respect. There's always those that take advantage of situations or just simply behave in a strange way.
Dealerships are called stealer-ships by many. Truthfully some dealerships are horrible but some are good. Very hard to tell which is which unless you experience them and get to know the people that work there then you'll know for sure.

About 8 years ago, we had an elderly gentlemen drop off his Lincoln MKZ to get repaired under warranty. Under Lincoln's warranty service policy, he was given a loaner to drive while his car was being serviced. He was given a Lincoln Navigator to use whilst his car was being serviced. This guy who was initially upset his 4 month old Lincoln needed service, was overcome with joy when he was given the Navigator as a loaner. His car was repaired the next morning and we called him to say his car was ready. He instantly grew furious and refused to give the Navigator back saying "It was his car now, you gave it to me." He thought since his car broke down, we gave him the Navigator as a free replacement. We explained that wasn't the case and it was just a loaner for him to use while his car was being repaired. Long story short, we had to call the police to get it back as he refused to do so. He was so mad with us that about a week later, he traded his MKZ for an Cadillac CTS, he drove thru our service drive entrance and flipped us all off while laying on the horn.

My 2018 Toyota 4Runner got messed up by the Toyota Dealer. Long story short when Toyota service department bring it back to me after service they crashed and some items was fixed by a body shop of their choice and some items fixed by dealer. When I got the car I got christmas lights on dash (error codes), poor paint job, poor alignment followed by problems like tires hitting swaybay at full lock turns,etc.. End up complaining to Toyota Corporation against the dealership and dealer agreed to buy the car back and got my self a 2021. It is great that Toyota Corporation is strict on Toyota Dealerships.

I'll never forget when my I got into the passenger seat of my Dad's rental car from the Chrysler dealer (back in the 90s, pre-internet), and this brown paper bag slid out from under the passenger seat. I take the bag out, remove the contents and it turns out the previous driver was an Adult Movie fan. In my hands I held a brand new, oversized VHS tape box of some type of variety highlight compilation that they used to produce. I immediately processed what it was and embarrassingly turned it over to my Dad. I'm pretty certain it wasn't his because I used to search for things like that in our relatively small house and never found anything like that anywhere, let alone in the car.

This was an amusing video. I have a reverse loaner story. I have friend who is a doctor and lives out of town in a very rural area so he has to buy his fancy cars in our city. He bought a new high end Mercedes S class sedan at a local dealership. When he goes out of town he has to use our airport so it is convenient to drop off his car at the Mercedes dealership to get serviced and pick it up when he returns. So when he is in California on vacation he gets a call from the Atlanta police that his expensive car is smashed and abandoned. He calls the Mercedes dealership and asks what is going on and they accuse him of trying to pull a fast one. What had happened was one of the dealership employees took it for a joy ride to Atlanta (3 hours away) and crashed it.

😂🤣😂🤣😂Hey Brother, here's my own story. You might smile but I am in tears. I recently acquired a second hand Scion XB 2011. I have previously owned some North American makes and none had ever been this threatening even the last one an Impala 2008 with 500.000 km plus had never burnt oil at all. This Scion has has oil leak but it eats half a liter of synthetic oil every 70 km and less. Not only that I have to buy oil regularly but it keeps me worried of burning the engine if I forget to check and add oil all the time. Yesterday I spoke with the former owner and she told me that was the reason she got rid of the Scion in question. Then going through internet I found that toyota knows about the issues for that model and offered to repair all those cars. But the lady never knew that and so she never claimed the fixing of the problem. When I called my local dealer they said I have to speak with the national toyota level. I called them but the customer service representative took me for a walk. I am in Canada. So what would you advise me to do. I know Toyota would not let an owner down and toyota value their customers. This situation is unbearable for me now. Looking forward to hearing from you brother. Good evening!

My 17 yr old GX 470 need a lot of attention and since I started watching Car Care Channel, I took my car to the only Lexus dealer on the island to have genuine parts used for the repairs. As part of their customer loyalty program, ie for people who bought their new car from the dealer, they provide loaners. Due to the supply chain issue, I had the RX loaner for 4 weeks during the 1st phase of repairs and a ES for the 2nd phase that also took 4 weeks. I really enjoyed driving the 2022 cars.

I worked for Enterprise for a couple of years, the stuff I have seen and heard about. We had a customer drop his Tesla off at the body shop next door to the office and his insurance was willing to pay for him to rent a Tesla. Which had to be brought in from 300 miles away. The day he returned it the rear bumper was hanging half way off the car, the out side looked like he was forging his own path though bushes. It was quite trashed. Picking up cars from impound was always a crap shoot how dirty it was going to be driving it back..

Bless the company that had to come and clean that up!!!
They must have cast iron stomachs!
Why would you sell that to anyone? Even at auction?
    They are customers too.
    That's horrible! 😷😷😷😷

Great feature these dealership nightmare stories. I can't wait to share the "I ran someone over" story with my wife.. Thanks for the chuckles, it always fun to read these accounts of human craziness and how you and the other automotive pros have to deal with them..

That kid that got ran over must have been high and had warrants on him if he didn't want to stick around for medical assistance.

At my dealership when we have to go to training, it’s typically out of state. So our tech goes to Jacksonville Florida for training and on his way back he just crossed into Georgia and began to have heart palpitations. He pulls over and calls the cops. The cops show up with medics just to find out he was on the verge of overdosing on something. Cops get a search warrant once he gets hauled off the hospital and find a couple pounds of meth or heroine, I don’t remember anymore. Dude serves time and a couple managers drive down to Georgia to get our rental back. No one at the dealership knew he was trafficking or selling drugs, he was quite and a good worker with minimal comebacks

Offering people something like a free loaner car is a good way to find out that very few people have any class at all. I was a loaner car manager for 3 years

So if folks treat loaners like this, imagine how they treat rental cars! For about 5 years, I was on a team that flew all over the country and rental cars and hotels were our way-of-life. Anyway, I saw rental cars that didn't even have 5,000 miles on them that were just trashed...even had a few with not enough oil to show up on the dipstick. (Yes, I always checked out my cars before driving off.) I don't remember a SINGLE rental car that had clean-looking oil on the dipstick...all were very, very black. Folks, don't EVER buy a car that had used as a rental....buyer beware!!!

One time, I poured a quart of oil (out of pocket) in a rental Kia before a long trip. I really didn't have time to drive back to Hertz. That quart barely brought it up to the lower line of the dip stick.

@@landshass2849 They don't make Money by spending money to change the oil and make sure the fluids are correct. When i rent i check the paperwork and leave the ignition on while filling the tank back up so i can make the gas tank guage and the paper work look the same. There is no refunds for giving more gas then you get at checkout.

Had a loaner 2018 Subaru Outback while my 2014 STI was getting the airbag recall done. The 'driver aid' Eyesight system tried to kill me TWICE on the way home, trying to swerve into other cars on the poorly marked road trying to keep in what it thought was a lane, had to wrestle the wheel the other way. Parked it and didn't drive it again until my car was ready. On the way back to the dealership, it suddenly auto braked for NOTHING, and I almost got rear ended. That system is now standard on Subarus, and my next purchase will be something else.

I won't buy a car with junk tech. My in-laws rented an Explorer and when I drove it the lane assist system kept trying to drive it off the road so you had to keep adjusting it like there was huge play in the steering wheel. My brother has adaptive cruise control. It broke probably from getting hit by ice (he lives in the mountains). $1500 later he got his cruise control back. My car salesman told me some of his customers reported their automatic braking system slamming on the brakes while driving on the interstate because of a rock in the road (happens a lot in Colorado) they would have driven around. If your junk tech car is over 5 years old and you get in a fender bender the insurance company totals the vehicle due to all the expensive to repair tech in the front bumper and grill.
