Todays video we have a bit of a guide for you about Grappling in Street Fighter 6! The grappler is the most noble and respectful kind of character you can play in any fighting game, so learn whats up from the basics, to maybe a few more advanced ideas! Plus I got enough questions asking me how to do a 360 so I figured I might as well figure out a video to stick that in somewhere lol
My favorite buffering command grab was in OG Soul Calibur. Ivy had this wiid command grab with disjointed directions. You literally couldn't do it without buffering it, though you could get into something like a quick poke or her move that switched her sword from solid to whip. Boy was THAT a lesson in fighter mechanics before frame data and videos were even part of the discussion, let alone built into the training mode! Frankly, for the mid-range game with usable basics to control the space, I think enjoying Ivy is what's got me drawn to Manon's play style.
As always plenty more guides to come. Characterwise for combos and the big guides the current plan is Cammy, because I promised and I keep my promises, and Zangief, due to overwhelming demand. I can't promise its the next few days or anything, but I am listening so know that they are the next ones up on dock.
@@ThePlasticBowl it aint shit talking, I am glad for every guide anyone else makes. More knowledge out there = more better.. Its just I am very comfortable in saying that over the years I have proved I am sorta the definitive guy for it.
Can't get enough Manon. She's exactly what I wanted from a judoka ballerina in SF. Still working on moving into DR after landing two light normals. If I can get consistent with that I should be able to more consistently get all my medals by the start of round 2. I love that feeling when I know my opponent knows they are three buttons away from death even at full hp.
I appreciate you covering when to normal grab vs. command grab. Even the pro Giefs I've seen don't seem to use regular grabs that much, despite how good they are for Geif to maintain his pressure.
I started introducing the spinebuster (3+TH) normal throw as a throw loop into my Gief gameplan last night. It is so so dumb, but it works so so well. If you time the throw early on the wake up, there is time to whiff the throw on your opponent's neutral jump and still lariat AA them.
I avoided grapplers my whole life because I could never imagine doing a full 360 on a pad. However, this shortcut has changed my view and now, I want to try. Thank you, truly.
That tip at the beginning about circle inputs actually works super well! I still can't do SPD EVERY time I do the input, but it's much more consistent now than what I was trying to do before! Thank you!
As a huge grappler fan I enjoyed this video very much Rooflemonger. I love the throws in this game because they have so much impact which makes landing them very satisfying. I have been doing 720 motions ever since they were first introduced but never have I executed them more often than I have in this game. This is something I am extremely pleased about.
The best archetype! I don't care how many combos I get on me, how slow I am, how big of a difference in frames. I live to get close, be unpredictable and destroy your life bar with one single command grab haha
The trickiest part for newer people is hiding the 720. Rooflemonger told you guys the secret of the 360. If you were doing half circle inputs, you were already mostly there :O
I was planning on getting a stickless fightpad soon, so this info is an absolutely huge help. Thank you so much Mr. Monger, your in-depth look at mechanics are a godsend!
For a moment there I was wondering why you end the 360 with an ⬆️ instead of ↖️ or ↗️, but then I remembered you're playing on a hit box, so ⬆️ is one button whereas the diagonals are two. (Plus ⬆️ is vertically symmetrical.) I hadn't pulled off a 360 in something like two decades, so I was very happy when I got SPD in World Tour and saw how easy it is! (Imagine throwing it out of Juri's dash 👀)
Maining jp and Manon but I played some Ken, Luke, an Ryu too... After this I'm playing some gief tonight. Didn't know I could do 360s so easily! Woooo. Every character is fun. What a game. 😊
I was hoping to find a video like this on YT when the time came. This is the first SF game where I explored grapplers and the playstyle. I must admit its so much fun lol. It also helps me play other characters better.
I think it's worth pointing out that Manon does not follow the heavy does the most damage formula. All her buttons do the same damage, the only difference is range/speed. Light command grab goes the further and is the slowest. EX is medium speed with extra range.
Thank you, Roof! I have been a Gief main (Gold-ish/Platinum-ish) for a few years. I never knew the direction of the 360 input didn't matter. I have always reversed it on the 2P side, and my right hand SPDs suffered in their consistency. This video just made me instantly better. (I also feel kind of dumb)
Gief finally getting more grabs like my favorite grappler of all time, Bass! Wish he had some on hit grabs on some counter hits. Ill take what i can get. Great stuff as always dood 😎👍🏼
I noticed a pretty nice thing by messing with grapplers in training mode: from a punish counter drive rush Lilly can always follow it up with at least a medium Mexican Typhoon (heavy can connect if you're not hitting it from absolutely max range) and Zangief can always follow it with an heavy Piledriver, because during the animations they slide towards the opponent to always be in position for a dunk, the damage is a bit less of what it would be because of scaling but otherwise it's very big damage for virtually no additional resources. Another thing I found out is that Zangief is the only one who has a grab super that can't be jumped after the super flash, Manon and Lilly get to contemplate their life choices.
I remember figuring out the 360 with just trial and error with Zangief in SF4. I started to always do forward to up back while trying to hit the button around the half circle mark. At the time I thought of it as hitting the button early and then continuing the 360 motion, with the game just reading it as close enough. But now I figure I must have just been hitting up back and the button at the same time without realizing it. But I guess it didn’t really matter, since I got the timing down and I can still consistently nail them to this day.
One of my favorite methods for trying to catch people with Zangief is doing drive rush into immediate Siberian Express. It's surprising how effective it is at times since it catches people being ready for a hit.
Awesome guide. I'm plat and was diamond in 5 so it is a good concise refresher. I am having trouble inputting consistently on hitbox now but otherwise like to apply this advice pretty heavily.
I'm also having trouble on leverless. When I looked at my inputs, I saw that I'm frequently missing the "down" input and going right from down-left to down-right. I think rooflemonger is also on leverless, so I'm curious what his secret is, because for the most part, I'm resorting to 21469 inputs to try to get the input more consistently.
Ever since Street Fighter Alpha/Zero, I've been doing my 360 motion with forward/backward-quarter circle to DOWN then UP very quickly For some reason, it works for me even if I don't hit the opposite point of my starting direction.
I always wanted to play zangief or another grappler as my second main but I could never do 360 inputs even back in sf4 I couldn’t do it so I just left grapplers alone but now I can feel the pure joy that zangief mains feel when they finally get that grab.

About Lily having to spend some drive gauge in order to deal decent damage...i see pros doing combos without using drive most of the times while i go crazy as soon as i can without worrying too much about burnout. Thinking about it i usually burnout frequently but still i wonder when is ok to burn some juice or keep it for the kill/emergency. Oh I'm not referring specifically to Lily btw.
I've been struggling to find a good use for Jamie's command grab. All versions have 8 frames of startup, and the range isn't much further than his regular grab. Recently switched to an arcade stick (my guy i couldn't even do a qcf consistently for a few hours when i got it) and after about a week of spending a few hours a day in the lab relearning i can finally do 360s and 720s with consistency.
