Load Tests | Predator 9500 Inverter Generator | Does it perform?

- Testing out the Predator 9500 Inverter Generator from Harbor Freight with various loads. (Heaters and Welder). I purchased this primarily as a home backup generator, for mobile welding with a miller multimatic 220, and for a backup RV generator. With the pure sine wave (clean power) I think she is going to work well and may just be the best mobile generator in its class!
With the performance that I have seen I believe that you would be able to use this unit on a 3 Ton home AC and probably a 4 ton as well if it has a soft start (no guarantees) but I will see if I can get that recorded.
If you have any questions that you think I may be able to help with leave a comment :-) Hope this video can be helpful to those that may have similar use cases.

Highly recommend their extended warranty. I have the regular 9500 generator that my dog (4 month old Border Collie) chewed through and destroyed the wiring harness. I went to Harbor Freight, told them what happened and inquired about a new harness, at which point they told me it was covered, bring it in and they would give me a new generator.
How many hundreds did the extended warranty cost?
Yay! Great to see this!! Seems like a really solid unit. The message board above your head when you were welding is way cool!
Been eagerly awaiting this. Thank you. Can't wait to watch it.
Thank you my friend! I enjoy sharing experiences with the world.
Very informative for all those generator users out there! Thanks Nick for breaking it all down for us! ❤️
Thank you Lisa!!
This series of reviews of this generator are extremely well thought out
Thank you PA! Appreciate you
Excellent overview/review Nick. Enjoyed the video!
Thank you my friend. Truly appreciate you being here
Great to see it working hard
Thank you. I was looking at this inverter generator today at Harbor Freight.
Nick Bless you for sharing your wisdom with the world!!!!
Glad I ran into you. Thank you for what you do . Great content
Thank you Robert!
Enjoyed the video, good down to earth testing. Subscribed, liked and shared.
Thank you RPP appreciate that big time. Sorry for the delay.. just now seeing this
Excellent overview I’ve been looking at the same one!
Thanks for completing this test. I’m most interested in making my welder mobile, so the weld test sold me. Great vid, keep ‘em coming.
Thank you Jesse
I like the generator just wish it had a 50 amp option so it could run both a/c units in my fifth Wheel.
How is it working out so far, I am about to pay cash for this thing, the home I rent is 110-120 and I pop the breaker constantly trying to weld for more than 30 seconds.
@iheart3dprinting951 i use this generator the most out of all my generators its fired up my house probably 15 times in short outages since ive owned it and use it at our off grid property. It has sat for months at some points and fires right up may take an extra few cranks if it sits but she goes hope this helps
I have a remote shop that is off grid and I run the harbor freight 8750 watt generator. The titanium 170 welder. It runs everything I need it to and don't regret buying it.
Awesome review man, keep doing what you're doing
Thank you
Greta overview! Thanks for what you do
Great torture test Nick! Looks like a fantastic genset!! I am in the market for one for this upcoming Hurricane season.
You def need one down there my friend. Stay safe!!
Thanks for the good info was considering the 3500 predator after the ice storms in Alabama last winter Alabama power was working as hard as they could to get power back up lost it for 12 or more hours then lost it again for about that many more have gas heat and stove so that helped couldn't cook everything in fridge that was thawing out I probably don't need that big one you are showing but would still like to have it thanks so much you and your family stay safe
Excellent video, subbed
Nate thanks man, appreciate it! Happy New year and thanks for being here!
Great job bro!
Great info! Good seeing ya buddy!👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Simple Man. You know I appreciate you my friend.
Thank you for your videos!
Thank you my friend
Cool video. I like the part scientific, but also real world use tests many of us would be wanting to use it for. Very helpful. I also own a 220 Multimatic!
Right on Tim thank you!!
Same here! I'm starting my mobile welding business & need a reliable generator for my miller 220. Thank you for this video.
how is the generator holding up planning on purchasing one for my needs with a spool gun I normally run mig and spool off my Lincoln mix but its too big great fir stick welding but other than that the generator portion is. amazing 9500 running watts and 11k peak. @@OG-rs7ov
Great vid great info. Be safe and be careful
Kevin!!! Thank you
I have the same generator, I could find it, I like inverters and I bought it for the hurricane weather, thanks for the video
Nice!! Be safe and pray no hurricanes. Good to be prepared!!
As we saw in Texas this winter these or useful for a LOT more than hurricanes.
There is no reason to be dependent on anyone for your energy, especially if you have a family.
If you don't think you "afford" one, well buy 2 on your credit card extra one the first time you actually need it .
Humans are waking up
Thanks for the test
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching
great vid, was def most interested in how it handled the welder. Nice!
Thank you!!
A cant hook hanging on the wall, a Miller 220, talks fast with precision and no stumbling over facts and figures = thumbs up and new subscriber with lots of respect for Nick!
Thank you I really appreciate the kind words and support and for you being here
Great video. It looks like they are holding up over time. Requiring a fuel additive is smart on their part.
Its all smoke and mirrors though because stabil-gas does not protect the machine from water damage from the ethanol.
Nice Work Showing the overload Trip 👌 @NickPixelTV
I have no use or care for this thing but theres something about you I like, and the secondary perspective aside from mine to look at stuff in general, thanks buddy
Hey Travis, appreciate that. Just having some fun. trying for real world uses that people ask. Sorry for the delay in comment just seeing this now. Happy New Year
Mobile welder man I could have used that a million times😄😄 great video Nick
Ill bring it over 🤪
Just checking in and sending some love. Hoping All is well with You and Yours.
Bless’ns to ya, Tedd
Great video sir. Subscribed.
Thank you for that appreciate it
I really like this testing. I have a 2500 what Honda that is old (1996). It really did the job with the ice storm in CenTex to keep my frides going and my wood stove blower on, however it is 120 only. I really need a gen like this to run my well pump also.
Thank for the info .
Anytime thanks for watchin
Very impressive. I plugged in a construction heater to a 6500 watt conventional generator once and the fan hardly spun.
That thing is a beast. 😁😁 Great investment for you.
Thank you Paul!!
For distribution of parts. Dillon,SC is the east coast facility and Calabasas,CA is the west coast facility. They are looking at putting a central on in Texas when they increase to more stores. They open a new store weekly for the past 5 years.
You did what most of us wanted to see, the only thing i would recomend is getting the heaters further away from the generator so we can hear you. I bought the 9500 and a two year warrentee but it rains so much in Oregon i havent taken it out of the box, and operating it in the rain is not recomended. So. I have a few different hurdles.
Thank you Ernest! Best wishes with the 9500 it’s been working well for me
Great overview my brother. Bet you been busy.
Hope all is welll. Kindness and love
Thank you Billy!! I wish I could do more but in time my friend. Im trying my best appreciate you being here
@@NickPixelTV keep doing your thing brother follow your heart ❤️💚💛🖤👊
Just a tip for all, be sure to do your break-in oil change! Very critical not just for this generator but on any small gasoline engine. I work for an asphalt paving company in Pa and they only buy predator generators. A fuel stabilizer will save you headaches in any small gasoline engine as well, proven!
CP the tool addict sent me over here Nick. New subscriber
Larry, thanks for popping in I appreciate that big time. Welcome my friend! CP didn’t have to do that but thats how he rolls
Great video
Thank you!
Sweet. If my 9400 watt duel fuel generator ever takes a dump im getting one of them. Everyone needs a generator. Everything in a modern home and garage runs on electricity. Mine saved our buts in 2009 when an ice storm knocked our power out for 8 days straight. Biggest ice storm that ever hit Kentucky.
Thanks Ernest!! Be safe
I picked mine up this weekend and did some initial testing last night. I'm impressed so far. However, keep in mind that the unit is only covered by a 90 day warranty and that the replacement plan costs are $260 for 1YR or $500 for 2YR. That might make the sister model, the DuroMax XP9000iH, with its 3YR limited warranty, dual fuel capability, remote start, and improved instrument panel a better overall value.
Exactly what made them popular before is less today.
@@Moondoggy1941 what ?
@@dznuttzonyachin7499 Yeah I think I was trying to say, is what made the Predator a good purchase was that they were cheap enough and reliable enough to take the chance, now the cost is rising the warranty cost more and they are not the bargain they used to be and the competition is catching up and surpassing them.
@@Moondoggy1941 they all kinda seem to be the same imo.
Clone engines with same configuration that just look different.
reading tons of reviews on several different models seem to suggest the warranty sucks for the most part having to have it sent to a repair shop etc.
Best to run the dog 💩 outta it in beginning before 90 days is up
@@dznuttzonyachin7499 I like Champion so far, at least they will contact you or at least respond if you have a complaint, I think it is better to get two 2000 models and if you need more juice hook up the second one and run them parallel.
Thanks!
Dude, Thank you my friend!
Ha John says well yeah you can’t run em both lol nice job though and glad to see ya man!!!!
❤️ thank you 🙃
Glad to see it'll run a millermatic
Yessir!
Knowing your electric, I love it, and i understand your exposed wires, for testing/ demonstration purposes, as well.
If it was not for demonstration, as an electrician i would have given you an ear full of code violation just on using romex with a thirty amp twist lock plug! Yes I know it was for demonstration purpose, but proper cables should always be used when possible!
Without a doubt Pat figured it i would hear something about it (if i Didnt say anything in the video) but was just for demo and with the price of copper i wasn’t cuttin lol. Thank ya my friend
You answered the question I had. I had wondered if it would run a mig welder on 240 volts. I'm sold. I just want a generator that I can put on the truck with the welder and do mobile welding. I have a shop but occasionally I have to go out of the shop for a repair in the field. This generator fits the need perfectly. Thanks
Is your welder mig/stick? Or mig only? Wondering the same thing, just a little concerned about Polarity. If generator puts out ac, do I need an inverter mig? Or does the mig already use ac rather than dc?
@@markanthonyalamillojr.2586 mig and stick ac only the generator puts out ac only but bigger welding rigs use DC I'm pretty sure

Harbor freight's warranty on their generators is 90 days. The average warranty on most other brands is at least a year. A customer shouldn't have to purchase an extended warranty to make them feel better or more confident in their purchase that it will be covered in the event of a component failure. The units that get returned to the store don't get sent out for repairs. They get sent back to the logistics shipping department and they get tossed out or recycled for scrap. Inverter generators are very handy however the inverter board inside can't produce the raw power a regular brushed or brushless generator with an AVR "automatic voltage regulation" unit can. It looks like a solid unit and their products have improved. I'd like to know what happened to that 11,000 watt continuous unit they used to sell. Your review was pretty good. I guess I just concentrate on longevity.
Nice video.
Thank you Barry!
Great video, really appreciate the information and testing. Needing to know the overall height without the wheels. Have a 24" opening I need to fit it in.
was waiting for this review since after I saw your first video lol. you convinced me to pick one of these up man. just out of curiosity have you considered using some better foam deadening material like secondskins pro to make the generator even quieter?
Thats awesome my friend. Congrats on your purchase. I hope it works well for you. That would be a good thought. Im not really disappointed with the sound for now. but would be interested to quiet it up while keeping it able to breathe.
Thank you for this, awesome, I have the 9500 in the box, was waiting for this and now I am sure to take it out of the box, still need to install my interlock kit for powering the home circuits.
Awesome! I think you’ll like it. I picked up just a 30 amp transfer switch to cover the basics will be messing with that as time allows. I think it’s a great thing to have on hand
@@NickPixelTV I did get a 30 amp breaker and going with the interlock kit, since not sure what I can power or not on the home. Thanks again Awesome!!
Hey...great video on this thing. I just bought a predator 3500 it's unopened and I'm thinking about exchanging it for this 9500 watt beast. Thanks alot for the info much appreciated.
I’m doing the same thing tomorrow. I have the 3500 now. I need more power lol
Sweet, I ended up keeping my 3500 watt predator. I went back to get the big one, and realised it's impossible for me to move alone if I needed to. Good luck!
I've never had a problem with any Preditor generator (non-inverter) I've owned. I had and used a 3500 for 15 years and sold it for $150, after I purchased the 8750.
I bought this one based on my friends experience with his 3500. He runs his like solid for his food truck. Thanks for watching
Great video. Thank you!
Do you know what the winding pitch of the Predator 9500 is? Is it 2/3, 4/5 or 5/6? If the Predator 9500 has 2/3 winding pitch, I can parallel the Predator 9500 with my Predator 2000 which is a 2/3 winding pitch generator per Harbor Freight Product Support.
The term "winding pitch" is the ratio of the number of winding slots enclosed by each coil in the alternator stator to the number of winding slots per generator pole.
Good luck getting parts for anything you buy from Harbor Freight. They didn't even reply to my email about asking about parts for a $1000 welder.
Did you try their customer service number? I have emailed once and got a reply and called and got an issue with a welder cart solved first try. Im sure everyone has a different experience with this. Let me know how it pans out. Hope you get it solved
Philadelphia checking in. Not only are you handy but you are gosh darn good looking 😂 great video brother keep pumping it out!!

After about 2 weeks using the 3500 generator it developed a gasoline leak. Called the store where I bought it. They said to drain the tank and bring it in. When I did they ask no questions and gave me a brand new one in the box.
Nice to hear thank you

These newer inverter powered welders are impressive on lower current draw.
How many volts were you running on the miller?
I need some help deciding which brand to get. I have looked at DuroMax 9000 watt and the Predator. Both are inverter generators. Do you need to use fuel stabilizer when you use 100% non corn gas? My other question is. When you turn on the generator, is there power instantly to the outlets? The DuroMax motor has to get warm before the system allows power to the outlets. On my Honda I wait 2 minutes before turning on the echo mode. I am replacing my Honda with a new generator. Thank you for any help.
I love harbor, freight, and they 100% stand behind their warranty I have never ever had any issues with any of my products that I purchased from Harbor freight with the warranty stop by your local harbor, freight store

I don't mean to stereotype, but Pennsylvania Man.... Pittsburgh... Just sayin friend :D
You know it my friend. hehe I do enjoy it. :-)
Bad ass video! Damn good test and that's how you test a generator! Thank you for the video!
Mur, Thank you appreciate it!!
The only other thing I would have liked to have seen is what the sine wave form is at various power draws. Thanks for the demo. By the way the price has increased to $1999.99.
John, i was going to get a scope from my buddy but there were already some videos on it that gave it good reviews ill have to find that and link to it. Also, its def been 1999 now for a bit but i believe there have also been 10% coupons floating around. Thank you my friend for your input and for watching

Any issues with the welder yet? Looking to get into welding soon with a millermatic 215 or lincoln 215mpi... I live in an apartment right now so i need to get creative where I weld. Our stupid garage only has an outlet for the opener, and I don't have access to the breaker if I pop it lol.

Dude aren’t you in Texas? after this year I would just to be ready. Thanks for poppin in my friend
Welder should keep you warm😁
Xep nice to see you. Yes sir!! Winter days are not so bad when you have a welder. Summer not so much haha
2 years on, how's it going? Considering this for a welder primarily, how's this setup holding up?
Can anyone answer this ? does the 240 / plug have 30 amp on each leg or is it just 15amp on each leg ??
Harbor freight needs to open a store in Puerto Rico.
Sacho que que! Venderian como pan caliente con mantequilla!
Good job on the load testing , and you didn't talk all day about it. I have a Millermatic 211. running .035 gas shielded flux core. I'm hoping my Briggs and Stratton 6500 / 5000 inverter will run it. I will test it this weekend. What wire were you running? I wouldn't be surprised to see yours run .045
Did it ?
@@LemonySnicket-EUC I wouldn't recommend the Briggs 6500 if you want to use the Millermatic 211 to the max settings. The welder senses the voltage drop from the generator and automatically shuts down. Very frustrating. It works if you don't want to weld thick material, above 1/4 inch or so, and you don't turn it up.
Do you tested stick weld? And how many amps?
Do the 30amp breaker need to be on are off when running a big load
No because the circuit is protected by the 50 amp breaker so if you go over 50 amps the breaker in the house will trip.
Wow its running that multi Process Welder Smooth as Butter 🤘👌👍👊 @NickPixelTV
Burned some stick the other night for a friend with no issues. Working out good. Thanks again!
@@NickPixelTV that's awesome that's what I want a generator like this for My Stick machine Mig machine and My tig machine and maybe my plasma cutter as well on the go for mobile service
Did you connect the welder to the generator? Can you run the welder directly from generator? I have a predator 8500 and was mainly going to use to hook up a welder, mainly due to lack of of 240 outlets where I live.
@@billyroque7857 did you watch the video?
@@billyroque7857 yes the welder was directly connected ran it perfectly on 220
Interesting didn't run heater and welder nice to see the breakers work nice 👍 @NickPixelTV
I am going to have to try with the 240 heater on and the welder on 110 may be possible or maybe turn the welder down a bit i was running hot for the test
@@NickPixelTV good idea Bro sounds like a new video idea 💡
I have the 3500 and love it. I would have got this one as a whole home backup but not having a 50A output makes the biggest generators worthless because you can't use the amps the machine is capable of.
240volt X 30 amps = 7200 watts as advertised it is not capable of 50 amps that would put it at 12000 watts it would need a V twin to achieve that.
@@Thrive-Off-Grid I guess that's about right then. My Duromax 9500 does about 40A x 240 so I needed the 50A inlet to power my A/C.
@@thelastosirus That is about what he was getting, he was pulling nearly 20 amps per leg on 240. Is your AC unit older? Maybe consider getting a new more efficient unit that requires less power. When you go off grid you do not make the off grid system fit the house!! You need to make your house fit the off grid system!! Most homes are waaaaaay inefficient. Hot water heater you shut off until you need it. Refer switch to an RV propane unit. Lighting all needs changed to LED, heat use wood. AC get newer more efficient AC and you may need to down size it. Use an inverter system with a battery bank, Never run a generator as a primary power mover. Make the power you need and shut it off! A generator that is off is much more efficient than one that is running.
@@Thrive-Off-Grid I have NG running my house including my Duromax Gen. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade my AC for some time. But I know with my 3500 and the unusual lows temps after Zeta, we were unnaturally comfortable for the 5 days we were without power. I even had to turn on the oven and use a box fan to keep the house warm. Never before has anyone seen this after a hurricane!
Could I use a 6500-5500 predator on a Lincoln mp215?
14:02 For will it weld?
I’ve never had a problem with exchanging anything at hf they honor their warranty!
Me either really theyve been pretty decent to work with if Ive had problems
I have a everlast 250ex do you think this generator can power it i do tig welding with it
how would this generator work when trying to power a 50amp RV in regards to the 2 legs? I have 50amp service from shore power and would like one of these for when our power goes out but wonder if it could run my 2 a/c's.
This really depends on the size of your AC units in the RV, how your RV is wired, and if you start them both at the same time - most RVs typically split that 50 amp into 2 legs if not much else is on startup would probably be the worst part. Maybe throw an amp meter on one of the AC units to see what the power draw is.
When you switch the voltage selector to 120 V, does it consume less gas?
Fuel consumption would be based on power draw if you have it on esc/eco mode it will consume less fuel if you’re using less power hope this helps
It seems like a pretty nice one, but not portable enough or quiet enough for Rv and camping. Do you have any suggestions for those purposes?
Depends if your running a big ac unit. I use a honda 2000 for camping and general uses. Hf also makes a 2k series predator as well.. if you want to run big ac the honda 3000 is good
I also have the Multimatic 220 AC/DC Welder and according to the manual it requires a 10kw cont/12.5 KW peak generator to get full output. Have you noticed over time any issues running that welder with this 9500? I would think the Predator 13000 which I believe has the 50 amp would be an ideal pairing for this welder. Thoughts?
The 13,000 is also $1,200 compared to the Pred 9500 at $2200 as of Jan 2024. What am I missing here as the 13000 has a higher capacity at almost half the cost?
Thd rating, inverter technology.
Does the Generator have a Fuel shutoff that you can get to? I like to shut the fuel off and run the carburetor out of Fuel to shut it off in between uses to keep carb from humming up..
Yes all you do is turn it from run to storage and it runs out the carb and shuts down takes say 2 mins
So in order to run mig off of a genny does one of the machines need to be an inverter? Or Does it depend on the type of welder?
If the generator you’re using has enough power probably can run a mig of anything but im guessing that running an inverter based pure sine wave generator is safer for the welder. I could be wrong
What were you welder settings volts? Wire feed speed?
Id have to set it up again but i ran it hot for the test also have burned some 1inch recently with no problems
HF doesn't even seem to have a listing on their parts site for the Predator 9500 generator.
The parts for this unit are listed in the owners manual you should be able to pull the manual from their site. Hope this helps
Do you know how clean the power is? Would it be safe to run computers etc. off this generator?
Yes this is an inverter generator I have a ton of electronics in my home and thats why I picked this one. So far it's worked well
Can you use That generator for food truck? Because I have a food truck in a container kitchen as well and I want to know can I use it
A friend of mine has two of them for his food truck and he used to only use the 3500 so depending on what your running and your draw I’m sure this would work just fine
