Predator 9500 Inverter Generator - Bigger Power, Less Noise?

  • The NEW Predator 9500 Watt Inverter Generator is here. This inverter predator generator from ‪@harborfreight‬ was launched in April 2021. This portable generator yields 9500 starting watts / 7500 running watts a bit over the eu7000is from Honda. Features include - 67db(a), 254lbs, and outputs both 120/240 power. Is it one of the best portable generators? time will tell.
    I plan to give follow up thoughts after I spend more time with it. It would be unfair to rate it right off the bat but if you're looking for an alternative to a Honda eu7000is this may be it. I can imagine it being good for Food Trucks, Service Trucks, Toy Haulers etc. From this video I can say that it is fairly quiet. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to help you.
    If you plan to use the 240 volt option without direct wiring, you may want to consider
    30amp 4 prong twist lock to 50amp RV adapter - amzn.to/3wXo6jN
    30amp to 50amp Welder Adapter - amzn.to/3uWg2xX

    Mine was delivered yesterday, your successful video was a part of buying it. Ran it for a little bit today. Tomorrow I'm going to do a whole house test. It should stay under 75% load for break-in which is still more than the old generator's max. I'm amazed at how quiet it is. Soft start on AC compressor has let me run my 4 ton AC with my old 6800W start/5000W continuous generator but all the UPSes in the house were unhappy. Plus my neighbors went deaf listening to the old one. Looking forward to seeing your next testing run.

    To all those that doubt Predator generators, I had a Predator 3500 Inverter generator with over 1000 hours on it before I sold it in perfect working condition. The only reason I sold it was because I needed a lighter portable unit. I have a Predator 8750 that I’m quite fond of as well. WOW! Thank you so very much, Nick, for taking us step-by-step through the set-up and performance of the Predator 9500! It was AMAZING how much knowledge you have regarding all of the generator's "mechanics" and what each does and how to keep them well maintained for better performance and longevity, so thank you! Thank you also for testing the sound she makes both near and at a distance; obviously that's very important not only for it not "driving a person crazy" by the noise produced by many generator models, but also the safety of one's family in a SHTF scenario. The last thing someone wants is to worry about someone hearing you have a very valuable machine in situations like that, especially in today's world 😞 Let's just pray things don't continue to deteriorate to that point, Amen!
    Anyway, thank you again and you have definitely helped me to make a decision to get one as soon as my budget allows 😞....it really sucks money makes the world go round. Which reminds me, I think you said you paid around $1700-1800 just a year ago....the dang thing is now $2400....pft...unreal how much stuff is costing today! It's still the best value I've seen thus far yet I'm still torn on if it would be better to have an "easier" portability, albeit not as much output, in portable solar unit; what do you think would be better? Keep in mind, I'm just a single old lady lol!!

      Consider fuel consumption. If you have a power outage you may lose access to fuel resupply as well. You could be blocked in. There may be fewer gas stations available and there may be long lines and fuel limits. Get a machine just big enough to meet your needs. Large generators can burn 15-20 gallons a day. I store 20 gallons and my vehicles hold another 40.

      @@NickPixelTV overall it’s worked really well so far. Slightly louder than our old Honda but not enough to really matter. The generator doesn’t like to go directly to load without warning it up a few minutes, otherwise it will stall if you try to apply loads to it. Other than that it’s had no issues at all and steadily runs 5-7k watts on a daily basis with no issues. For the price difference between the predator and the Honda eu7000is we used to have this thing is so worth the money.

    I got the predator 9000 generator for my food truck. Fairly cheap and it has the two year warranty. 7 hours in, the muffler began to rattle. 1560 hours of use later, the push button stops cranking.(going manual pull to crank, still cranks of the first pull though) Most likely the battery. So far it dosnt seem to bad no? I'll try to get a replacement some time before my 2 year warranty ends next year. So it'll sum upto 3120 hours of use(that's hoping it'll last two years before exchange)(156 days of use 10hrs a day running 26 amps accordingto my multimeter). Then the new model will hopefully run another 2 years without warranty. So like 6240 hours of use? For roughly $800? That's being very hopeful that the warranty will accept an exchange, and that the new generator will last another two years. Make what you will of my experience but it dosnt seem to bad of a deal. I'll mostly likely give this one a shot too since it is quieter. Maybe not by much but alot better then the one I have currently

    • @randybobandy9828

      $800??? You must not have the 9000w inverter predator like the one in the video. I have the same 9000w like you and I paid $550+ tax for it back in 2015. Runs like a champ still!. Also yes I guarantee the battery is dead if the push button stopped working, not a generator issue though.

    Awesome video, Camping out at Texas motor speedway for the All Star race. Thinking it's time to replace the Generac 6500. Thinking the predator will be an awesome upgrade for less noise. Just wanted to pass this experience along. Used the Generac for about 3 years at the track. Around 4am it would run out of fuel. We sell Liqui Moly products at work, so I did a oil service on the generator. I used Liqui Moly MoS2 Anti- friction oil additive, (half the can and topped off with whatever oil). Now this generator still has 2 of the 7 gallon fill at 10 in the AM. Year number 6 beating the crap out of this generator. Give it a try, 10 bucks at O Reilly's auto parts or Amazon!

I didn't expect it to work so well. Voltage hasn't gone below 119.5V, not measuring across both legs (aka 220). My plan is to run it 1-2 hours. So far the load hasn't come close to 75% of rated amount on generator so break-in going well.

    I added some stabilizer to my gas can a few weeks ago since my wood splitter is going to sit for a time. I put some in my rider mower.. My mower usually cuts over 1.5 acres on less than a tank of gas.. With the stabilizer, I ran out about 1/2 of my yard cut.. The stabilizer is to keep the carb from clogging if set for a length of time, but I would not add stabilizer to my fuel again for work while using any machine.. I'd wait until I was not going to be using it for a lenth of time, then add the stabilizer... But that's each one's option..

    Always run fuel stabilizer in ANYTHING that has the ability to be laid up for a long while. Synthetic oil is the best. Its an old wives tale about running dino oil first for break-in period. Harley Davidson CVO models, Chevy corvettes come with synthetic oil.

  • @intrepidz7271
    @intrepidz7271 3 года назад +4

    I see a problem with the math on this generator. The largest plug is a 30 amp. It’s good for a #10 wire and 30 amp service. At 30 amps your maximum watts should be 3600 watts per hot leg, or 7200 watts total. If you run 7600 watts continuously you are overloading the breaker and wire size by 400 watts. If your starting watts are 9500 watts that’s 79 amps. This is 49 amps OVER the 30 amp breaker size, it should trip in order to protect the #10 power wire. If it doesn’t the wire catches on fire. That plug on the generator should be a 50 amp for this kind of service.

    • @NickPixelTV
      @NickPixelTV  3 года назад +2

      I thought about this as well. After the break in were going to see what she does. You would think if the breaker is 30 amps it’s protected so will it actually hold a 7600 load? Thank you for the comment.

    • @intrepidz7271
      @intrepidz7271 3 года назад +3

      @@NickPixelTV I was thinking maybe they are driving up the total watts for the generator so you could be using both the 30 amp plug, plus the other 120 volt plugs at the same time. Run the generator on the 120/240 volts selector switch and see if you still have power on the 120/20 amp circuits. If you do then the 30 amp is still only good for a max of 7200 watts, but you can run other cords off the other circuits at the same time. That only gives you 400 watts to spare for the extra cord if running at 7200 watts on the 30 amp plug.

    • @NickPixelTV
      @NickPixelTV  3 года назад +2

      I will try that for sure, i believe you can run the 120’s while also running the 30 but i will test it to make sure. You’re prob spot on in your thinking.

    • @Pk3_Garage
      @Pk3_Garage 3 года назад +1

      It's 30 amps per leg. The 30 amp breaker acts like a double pole breaker in your main control panel to run your AC, wheel pump, etc. Not sure if it will be able to put out 7500 watts continuously with only 30 amps.

    • @intrepidz7271
      @intrepidz7271 3 года назад

      @@Pk3_Garage The math is 30 amps X 120 Volts = 3600 watts per leg. 3600 watts x 2 legs = 7200 watts for that 30 amp plug on the generator. The wire from the generator should be run on a #10 wire using a 30 amp breaker tied into your electric panel. I used a "Reliant 30 amp plug" with a interlock for my service panel. We did quite a bit of testing with this conclusion. Most everyone can get away with running 5500 watts as a maximum and 3500 watts on the low side. In this range you shouldn't have any issues. You will not be running your central air conditioning. That's a completely different topic.

    67db is really pretty loud and will drive you crazy if you have to work around it. It is better than a non-sound shielded generator for sure but is no where close to the industry leaders. I work on a lot of generators and have these Predators come in all time. They are great for someone who only needs a generator once a year or so as everything falls/rattles apart inside, anything rubber disintegrates, and overall just very cheaply built. They do work good while they work which seams to be under the 50, maybe100 hour mark. Spend the extra couple $100 on the 2yr warranty if you are going to use this over 50 hours as you will need it. The decibel scale is logarithmic so every 4-6db raise is perceived by the average human ear as twice as loud. Compare that to the Honda eu7000i and this is nearly 4x as loud(58db vs 67db). If you don't have to have 220/240v I think you would be far ahead to buy two Predator 3500 and parallel them vs this.
