Can you have TSC without a fancy machine?

  • Well it turns out you can have through spindle coolant without an industrial machine.
    However the question is would you want to or indeed need to?
    I thought it would be an interesting experiment to see if its would work and if its worth it.

    For what it's worth there is a commercial system from RegoFix for adapting ER collet chucks to through coolant, it's called ReCool.
    Maybe that is useful to someone.

    Fantastic, really good work as always. I didn't think through-spindle coolant was close to achievable for the hobbyist, but this is a really neat and simple design. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks ebrewste got something coming up on how I measure these sort of cutters. Being hand made the cutting dia is not perfect.

    I see a great cutter and the coolant is a work in progress. You will use this cutter a lot I am guessing.

      That's the plan! I made it because I break a lot of cutters and as they are not cheap having an insert one saves me money. They can also rip metal off very quickly.

    nice work, however i think you would be better off making the yoke part with a more secure way to secure it on the tool. also, a dedicated flexible coolant line with some kind of quick connect fitting and a couple valves so you could turn either coolant line off or both on at once. from there it would be nothing to add a solenoid valve and be able to turn it on or off as needed in the machining program.

    Hi, would be interesting to see with a better seal and using compressed air with a bit of CRC to clear the chips and less mess. Maybe O rings to provide a seal. Thanks for the video.

    I.m no expert but I think you need to slow down your pump. It should not pump with any more pressure than required to keep the channel full. Also is there clearence between the collar and the inlet holes in the tool holder? If not your only getting flow through one hole at a time. It would be better if the excess pressure when blocked between holes had some sort of buffer as in a gap between the collar and tool holders inner ring. This would also allow more coolant in the inner bore by entering more than one hole at a time, although it appeared that you have sufficent flow to fill inner bore.

      Hi Greg,
      The pump is a mains induction motor runs at one speed only. There is clearance between the collar inner channel and the feed holes into the tool body. There are a couple of bits of broken drill in two holes though. I should know better but I drilled them too aggressively and as they broke though into the other radial holes broke off.
      Having said that the tool works a treat, in the last instalment of this I got it to work well yes it does still leak but I dont see that as a problem as long as the coolant gets to the cutting tip.
      I made this as an experiment hopefully others will pick up the idea and make there own versions.
      I still think its a novel solution and could be developed for many more styles of tool.
