If you are new to volleyball or haven't figured out your overhand serve yet, learning how to do a proper underhand serve is key. In this video I go through the steps required to perform a great underhand serve. I talk about how to hold the ball, how to position your hand, and what to think about as you are making your swing. The goal with serving a volleyball should always be to learn an overhand serve, but this is a great place to start until you feel comfortable and confident with your skills.

Sarah Pavan is a Canadian beach volleyball Olympian and World Champion. She is the 3-time FIVB World Tour Best Blocker, and one half of 2019’s Most Outstanding Team. Before playing beach volleyball, Sarah Pavan was one of the world’s top indoor volleyball players. She had an impressive professional career in Italy, Brazil, South Korea, and China, and represented the Canadian Indoor National Team.
On this channel, Sarah shares everything you want to know about volleyball, from beginner skills all the way to the more advanced levels. You can find volleyball drills, how-to skill technique, sport-specific strength and conditioning exercises, strategy, and more. If you haven't figured out your overhand serve yet, that's ok! Keep practicing your overhand serve, but use this underhand serve in games until you get confident with it!

@@malikafirdosh622 I know the feeling. We’re playing volleyball in my gym class rn. I’m still pretty bad at serving but if you can try to move closer to the net and position your body in the direction you’re going to hit. I wasn’t confident either but I can see I’m improving a little. Try my advice and keep your chin up :)

Tysm Sarah! I recently joined the volleyball team and have not been able to get it over the net, after watching this video my serve has been a lot better and I am now able to get it over the net! 😊
thank you so much, i joined the volleyball team last year and i am able to get my serves over the net by a few inches. i have been trying to improve over summer break so i will be prepared for next season and be a starter by the end of 8th grade and then join in high school. volleyball has always been a passion of mine and i am extremely proud of the progress i have made during the past year and i am also very excited on the following years to come! ❤️😁

Omg i've seen so many different and sometimes funny variations of underhand serve at school that i had no idea that this is the actual way to do it. Nice video, thanks for doing this.

@@SarahPavanVolleyball well... everyone just did it in a way that they felt most comfortable with. Some people (including me) would stand sideways instead of facing the net. Other kids would hit the ball with the side of a fist (the thumb would be holding the fingers). The funny ones are harder to describe but one girl, for example, would be standing in a way that the gap between her feet is a lot wider and she would bend forward a bit more i think so her hand holding a ball would be as low as the knee. It was a weird technique but she rarely missed. To add more power girls would often push of with the foot at the back as they do the swing. That's some things i can remember from the top of my head. It was amazing how some of the smallest girls would find ways to do very strong and accurate underhand serves!

It really frustrated me earlier because was the only one who cannot serve properly. All of my teammates were able to get the ball to the other side. I feel so completely hopeless 🥺😭😭😭

my problem is always not having enough power when hitting it so it never goes over the net, it usually just hits the net… any tips?

When I played pickup beach volleyball as a teen I used the underhand serve, but I would put the hitting hand into a loose fist and hit it with the "top" of the fist where the thumb and index finger make like a circle. Is that a 'legal' way to hit it or do you need to use your palm?

Hello, I have a question for you ma'am. Do I remove my hand holding the ball right before I contact the ball, or do I hold the ball until it leaves my hand? I did not quite understand once you said just on contact you remove your hand holding the ball?
Right before you contact the ball, you remove your hand. I'm sorry that wasn't more clear!

We have volleyball in Gym class, and we Are switching positions, and I really can’t surve. Last time I tried everybody laughed at me, I like miss the ball. A boy in my class laughed so bad and said that I sucked and it was sad to watch. I just wanna learn how to do it, and I want people to actually want me on their team. :(
First of all, that guy in your class is a jerk. Volleyball is a tough sport to learn and some people pick it up faster than others. Keep practicing and you will gradually start to notice improvements!!

You're supposed to toss the ball though, otherwise it's not a valid serve.
Not necessarily. You must only hit the ball over the net.... whether it is with your hand, your foot, whatever. There doesn't need to be a toss.
