My problem is that I keep throwing the ball up and it’s now a habit
I understand, it's tough to break habits. Keep practicing, you'll get it!

Does the ball need to be in air or should throw somewhat up and then should hit the ball ? Is there a rule like that ? we should not hit the ball like as it is in the hands without throwing ? Is it correct ?
is it currently required to toss the ball or release the ball prior to making contact with the hitting hand? I've heard that recently both for beach and indoor volleyball. I started playing volleyball before that rule came about. so making the transition to the ball release before contact has been really challenging
I haven't heard of that being a rule before anywhere, but I suppose there could be a local or league rule.
Official (FIVB) volleyball rules say this:
12.4.1 The ball shall be hit with one hand or any part of the arm after being
tossed or released from the hand(s).
So I would argue that a (minimal) toss is required.
:)
We have no open gyms or sand volleyball courts anywhere I live.
Sorry to hear that, that's sad!
