This video was very helpful. I have been practicing overhand serve for a week now and I have yet to get it over the net. It makes me feel like I have no strength

I have started playing volleyball at the age of 33 and I cant get hold of a good serving technique. My serve has no power, comes either short over the net or doesnt pass it and I get a pinching sensation. Nobody so far has figured out why I cant serve properly 🤣. I can attack with no pain but serving is horrible for me. There was a time I was ok at it, but we only train once a week and by the time there is the next training I have forgotten everything. This video helped a bit to reconsider some movement patterns. Wish me luck 😄

You and i are in the same boat. I started 29 and now 31. I am done with underhand serve and now starting to get the grip of how to overhand serve. I did 3 step although many suggested to start with only one or two step. But somehow the three steps that works best for me. I wish i have a friend who is just as passionate and someone i can get along well to share all my struggles and frustration (being me probably make it harder). Its really hard to find one.

Notice how she goes back to flexing/bending her wrist backwards after he tells her the wrist should be fixed. I see this same tendency in beginners. They have to unlearn "the slap" and learn how to get power from driving the fixed wrist/forearm forward to drive the hand through the ball. When I let them hit a ball or two with a closed fist they never bend the wrist back and hit the ball so much harder, often going over the net right away. This shows them they have the power to hit it over the net, but they lack technique and confidence with the open hand. We'll go back to opening the hand and often times they'll still bend the wrist back. I've wondered whether some sort of wrist brace training aid that fixes the wrist would help speed up the learning process. I think there's also a fear that they're going to injure their extended fingers. (Something they don't worry about with a closed fist.) As the student in your video slowly gained confidence in her timing, she started swinging harder, and was then fixing her hand/wrist before driving it through the ball.

This describes my experience to a T. Thank you for bringing out this information. I will pay more attention to my wrist now.
