    Serving is a skill that many beginners struggle with. There are a lot of moving parts, and if one part of the chain is weak, the whole thing can fall apart. In my opinion, the TOSS is the most critical part of the serve. If you can master a consistent toss, the rest will likely come along much more easily.

      Im really confused about the follow through. You say to stop your hand when it makes contact. However when I watch your demonstration, your arm does swing through past the point of contact. Can you explain this a bit better? If we were to stop on contact, wouldnt our arm remain at that 45 degree angle from our eyes? I am consistently serving the ball in a straight direction to towards the net, but I cant find the power. Im trying to trouble shoot and your video is so helpful. Very grateful and will be watching more.

    Thanks for this video. I'm not really a beginner but for the life of me I can't serve overhand. It's so embarrassing, and I know I'm judged for it. Everyone either tells me that I'm dropping my elbow when I swing (or they say to eat more Wheaties! Which is annoying because lift weights and am probably stronger than they are!). I do realize that I am dropping my elbow, but I can't manage to change this when I'm actually serving. Do you have any tips?

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  4 года назад +25

      I would recommend starting with your elbow high and back before you toss. That way, you only have to go forward with your arm and can contact it higher. I would also make sure that you are engaging your abs and stepping with the correct foot. Those are the three things that I usually look for first. Let me know if those don't work for you.

This video hits every point I was looking for and really shows good visuals. The biggest thing that stood out is that throughout the video she never drops the elbow! I love that, a lot of the other videos had the elbow down and a lot of bad habits in them. My serving improved dramatically after watching this video; I've gotten way more consistent and have started being more deliberate with where I'm serving now that I have more control. Before I could rarely manage a float serve due to my toss always having a little spin but this really helped with that! Also this was the first guide I've seen that addresses the wrist which in hindsight was my main issue with serving, really insightful!

I think the content and the breakdown is really great. just a note on the production, I found the voice audio to be a little low in volume. as a result, I found the background music to be a little distracting and made it harder to hear the speaker's voice. in the future (this may be addressed already since the video is 2 years old), I would like if the speaker's voice were made louder and if the music background were either removed or definitely made lower in volume as to not compete with the voice. thank you for sharing

    I am stuck in a problem: I was playing volley with friends for decades without any real coach. As you can imagine, I never learned the proper moves and technic. But I was able to overhead-serve quite powerful and aimed. I was able to choose between a float and a top/sidespin. Now finally I joined a club, hoping to get more practice and proper traning. Of cause the coach wanted to teach me the right movement and hitting-point to get more effective. Maybe a little different to your explanation, but very near to it. Sadly at the moment I am stuck in the middle of nowhere. I don't get it right, like the coach wants it within some level of effectiveness and precision. On the other hand my old style, looking maybe funny but more comfortable, precise and sharp is lost.That feels uncomfy at the moment, like someone stole my weapon. Rejecting the coaches advice is maybe not the best idea, but getting more and more unsafe to serve is demotivating...

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  4 года назад +4

      Oh no! That is a problem, and I can understand how disappointed you might be feeling right now. I feel like your old serve feels funny now because you have learned the correct technique.... while frustrating, this is a good thing because your body can notice the difference. If you have been serving the same way for years, it will be very difficult to change the habits you have formed. I felt the same way when I switched to the beach from indoor. I would suggest continuing to practice the new, correct technique because I promise you, it WILL get better. Until you feel confident using that new serve in games, keep doing your old serve. There is always a strange transition period, but you will notice an improvement.

    • @Matahalii
      @Matahalii 4 года назад +2

      @@SarahPavanVolleyball Thanks but the point is: I lost my old serve. I end up in a mixture of both, resulting either in a weak serve or hitting the net or outside the playfield. For safety reasons I can do a precise but not so powerfull underhand-serve instead until i get confident with the new overhead-serve...

    Thanks so much for this wonderful video! Just wondering about the steps: I am not certain I am getting it correctly. I am right-handed, which means that according to the video I should step with the left foot. What exactly does it mean? My intuitive body motion would be keeping my left foot still and stepping by moving my right foot forward. It is wrong? Should I keep my right foot still and move the left one even more forward than it was during the toss? Thank you and greetings from Tel Aviv.

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 года назад +2

      Hi! Thanks for your comment! When you are getting ready to toss you want to be standing naturally with your weight on your right foot and your left foot just slightly forward. On the serve, you want to keep your right foot still and move the left one forward even more. Taking this step allows you to generate some momentum and it lets you use your core to get more power. If you step with your right foot, your body will end up turning to the left and you will lose all of your core strength. I hope that makes sense!

      I always recommend hitting the ball with an open hand. As you get more comfortable, you will have much better control of the ball if you keep your hand open. Just make sure to keep your wrist strong and to feel like you are high-fiving the ball. Don't let your hand or wrist flop over the ball.

    how do you fix hitting with one are more then another in say a bump pass? Some times hits off one arm and goes the wrong direction all together.

    I’m a new sub and new to volleyball aswell.
    Do you know what the serve is that floats and falls randomly. If so did you make a video?

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball

      This overhand serve is the one that floats. To make the serve float and drop, you need to make sure that you stop your hand on contact instead of following all the way through.

    I have a player that insists on using her fist to serve overhand. Is this okay? How is her fist suppose to make contact with the ball?

    At the end of the video, you talked about not swinging through, but in the serve examples, your arm went all the way through and you didn’t stop, can you explain this because i’ve been trying to get my serve forever and i just can’t get it all the way over the net

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 года назад

      I understand what you're seeing, and I know that it looks like I am swinging all the way through. If you look at my arm, it is accelerating fast until I hit the ball, and then after I contact it, my arm is just dropping back beside my body. I am not swinging hard past contact. The important thing is that you are not accelerating your arm all the way down to your body.... if it helps you to completely stop your arm until you get used to it, then I would give that a try. Make sure your hand stays strong and not floppy! Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Because of covid, I have paused playing volleyball. when I get vaccinated, I’m planning on trying out for my previous club team, but the fear of not being able to overhand serve is hitting me. Any tips?

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 года назад

      I think it might be helpful to start close to the net and try to get a couple over from there. Then when you feel comfortable, take a couple of steps back, and continue like that. When you get further from the net, don't change your technique.... always use the same technique and don't worry about how far away the net looks. If you do the correct movements, that's all that matters.

    In some other videos I have seen coaches recommending loose wrist, almost limp and they also say to follow thru 🤔🤔
    There is no agreement in this apparently XD
    I have a question, is the entire palm or the base of the palm (the lower part)

    So I'm left handed in writing but my right hand seems to do better serving than my left and its confusing m

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  4 года назад

      There are a lot of people who write with their left hand and play volleyball with their right hand. If your right hand feels more natural when you are serving, then I recommend using the right-handed cues.

      You have to make sure you use the step to gain momentum. If you use only your arm, it won't be enough power. The step really helps.
