Going UP!! Old Man Emu Tacoma Lift!

- Hey guys and gals all over the inter-webs!! We are doing big things to the Good Vibes Ride!! The day has finally come to say goodbye to the stock suspension and hello to bigger and better things. We installed the Old Man Emu Tacoma lift by ARB. I decided on this lift because as a beginner when it comes to off roading, it seemed like the best place to go. I couldn't be happier with the outcome!
As a disclaimer, I am by no means a professional mechanic nor do I have a lot of experience putting suspension lifts on vehicles. If you decide to put this lift or any other lift on your truck, I would suggest following the provided directions, or doing all the research you can beforehand.
Thank you for watching and see you on the next one!!

Man I love listening to that song on repeat for 16 minutes
blasting 14x louder than his voice
You can’t beat jamming out to some royalty free music on a loop.
Drama queen. It was more like a broken 15 minutes. Lol
You convinced me on the cali-raised ditch lights and now I think my mind is made up for my lift. Great video!
Great job 👏!
And Happy New years.
Love that setup man! Looks great!
That setup just looks so right. Lovn it man.
Thanks for the video, brother. Just ordered the equivalent OME kit for my 97 Taco. Going to go w/ JBA UCA's as well. Super stoked!
Nice video buddy! Truck is looking amazing. Good to see you back and I can’t wait for more videos. 🤙🏻🤙🏻
jon shearer thanks bro! I really appreciate it!
You made that look easy! Thanks!
The truck look great man!
Awesome video and thanks for sharing. Solid truck and the whole package you got going on🤙
Aloha from Oahu🤘
Noa HNLSFO1 thanks so much!!
great video, been looking to lift and replace the stock shocks. great set up .
great video my friend ! u helped me a lot, thanks !!!!
Man. Look at those fresh, pristine ujoints. No grease slung everywhere...
You made that look so easy! Unlucky for me, I'd be too lazy to do it alone. Soooo that's a no-go for me. Shop it is. lol
Great job!
Awesome setup! I may get the same lift kit for my 2011 tacoma! Btw, I subbed!
Awesome video! Keep it up!
Thank you!!
Great install video! Very thorough with clear and easy to understand tips! It's been a lot of years for me since I have done any complete suspension overhauls and this video instilled my confidence that, yeah, I can do that! I'm ordering my OME kit today for my 1st gen Taco! Any additional advice you would give looking back on this? Any follow up comments as to how the lift is still functioning? Thanks again for the great content! 🤙
great video my Brother thanks for sharing
working on newer frames/ parts is always nice, my 2010 is a lil crusty and ive been working on cleaning it up and restoring it up, frame was starting to rust so i got some rust reformer to clean her up
Well done for doing this whole job yourself. I often lubricate my springs when they start squeaking. The original Toyota springs are packed better but the aftermarket are superior.
BMT I agree. Thanks for watching!
Truck looks sick my friend, I just picked up a '17 TRD OFF ROAD with low miles
I think you just settled the lift debate for me! Thanks!
Willey Poboy awesome!! Congrats and good luck with it!
Yep same here
Great job! Bad ass wheels
Kevin Guerrero thank you!
Cool video I’m getting ready to install my leaf pack soon..
David Cabrera thank you! It’s super easy. Good luck!
Cool rig man!
I guess ill be the guy to tell u the grease goes inside the sleeves so the bolts dont sieze inside them. Trucks definitely comin along tho man. Hope to see ya soon ✌
Looks good
Thanks for the helpful video
Bornintheseat no worries! Thank you for watching!
Just FYI the bottom rear strut bolts should go the other way. Head by the drum. Just so you can drive them out in the future
Also looks like you put the centering washer on the bottom of top of the rear shock. That goes on top of the bottom bushing into the shock mount hole. This is the thinner of the 3 washers
So nice I like that
Really enjoyed this video. I bought a 2019 Tacoma over the summer. Suspension is the next step. Looking forward to hearing about your overall experience with your OME setup.
William Domstrand thank you for watching! And congrats on the truck. I’ve had some life things preventing me from posting videos recently. I have a few to edit, one is a 4,000 mile review of the lift. So if you’re subscribed be on the lookout for it
Same lift I have on my Tacoma, love it!!
Roam TV right on!! 🤙🏻🤙🏻 thanks for the comment!
Nice video just did that same lift kit on my 2021 Toyota Tacoma last night. It’s got less than 800 miles on it.
Hi great video. I initially installed Ironman leaf springs and shocks on my Hilux. I'm on my second OME shocks. The ironman shocks lasted for about 80,000km and worse they started leaking. I've done over 525,000km on my 2009 Hilux. The ride is the same between the two but OME last longer.
BMT right on!
Goddamn man I wish we could get Hilux’s here. Those bastards are legendary.
Nice way to lift a vehicle, like those rear leafs too they can support a lot of tongue weight from a travel trailer, etc.
I installed an OME lift more than two years ago and it has been great! Great equipment at a great price.
RVG1 how much did you get your kit for?
@@waguni just over $1,600
Nice job!
Mark Reynolds thank you! Thanks for watching too!
Dope rims bradah! Thanks for making the videos!
A Jrizzle thanks for watching!!
Big fan of the ray10s looks nice
El Chingón thanks!
Great video 👍, you mentioned installing a transfer drop down kit with this lift, just wondering because this kit doesn’t come with any drop down kit other than the main drive shaft bearing bracket lowering shims, did you find it necessary to add a transfer lowering kit for this set up?? And if so what about a skid plate lowering shim as well as a front sway bar relocation bracket? I’ve got a 2019 TRD off road with a ready lift SST 3” spacer in front and a 2” blocks in the rear which I’m looking to swap out for the OME kit with heavy duty front and rear springs but am a little concerned that the kit won’t be complete with only offering the springs shocks and the lowering shims for the rear drive shaft.
Great video! I was researching the same lift and found your video. I'm wondering what the height of your truck is with the 285s and the lift. I'm interested in a similar setup and would still love to park in the garage I paid for lol. Thanks and keep em coming!
Hey man! Great video! I have a few questions, hows the lift right now? Are you still on ome? Has the front ever sag? Ive heard ome coil ends up sagging. And are you on stock uca? If so hows the alignment, have you gotten the truck to be aligned?
Great vid! Did you go with the softer or firmer valving in the front? Im about to pull the trigger on this lift. Also did you use the top spacer plate to get the full 3 inches of lift? And hows the vibration from the rear end if any, i noticed that there was no 3 degree shim on the bottom of the leaf pack.
Sweet rig and great video!
How much lift does the leaf springs give you?
Great video man. How’s it still holding up? Getting ready to pull the trigger on one.
Looks great 👍. I have questions what size ubolt did you used? Thanks
How has the lift been so far? Love the video editing. Thanks bud
idk if this has been said but no grease on the collar of the leafspring bushing. you dont want that to move but definitly alot on the inside for that colar bolt
Super cool 👍👍👍👍 thank you for all info....
What year the Taco... brand new?
Where did you buy the leaf springs at for the rear end.. and where did you buy the front set up @
I'm curious if you put the OME ARB EL112R leaf springs on your truck and how you like them? I heard that there was a design issue and that they squeak and rub. Thanks
Hey, great video. I also have the OME lift with 887 and ICON 1.5 AAL. Did you install differential drop and a carrier bearing drop? I installed the sway bar relocation since I was rubbing on my coils.
SpencerAzevedo right on! I did do a carrier bearing drop. It took care of almost all vibrations. I didn’t change the sway bar link though
I appreciate the upload! I used your video to help me with my install today. Im running FOX 2.5's in the front, FOX 2.0 in the back w/ the same heavy duty OME AAL. Heavy S.O.B those are haha Also, adding the torque spec would've help cut my research time lol but overall SOLID video. Thanks man
Christopher Gomez awesome! Thank you!
@@TheGoodVibesProject Question for you, what are your center of wheel to fender measurements for the front and rear? Mines not leveled, rear sits much higher
Christopher Gomez it’s currently pouring out where I live, so when it stops I can go measure, but when I finished mine, the rear sat a good bit higher as well. It took putting some weight back there to help settle those leaf packs.
Christopher Gomez sir which fox 2.0 are you using on the back what part no? Is that a 2”? Thanks
Christopher Gomez sir is that fox 2.0 is the 2” which part no. Is that? Thank you
Did you measure the distance to the fender before and after? It's my understanding that this is the only way to really know exactly how much lift you wind up with. I'm leaning toward something like this. I want to keep things as simple as possible while improving ride quality and off-road performance. I also think the Bilstein 6112/5160 setup with OME HD leafs is a great setup too and probably cost similar to this. I'm planing to add a slide-in camper to my rig eventually, so I might need heavier leafs than these, perhaps the Deaver stage 3, but they are $1000 a set! Anyway, Nice video!
I just got the same tires!
👍 luv 2 c a update vid / 1 yr review
I've been looking at an OME kit and new wheels/tires for my '19. What offset are you running on those wheels?
Hey I was wondering if you had to do a cab mount chop to fit these? Great looking truck. I was looking at the same lift and the new BR6 wheels
R C thank you! I didn’t do a cab mount chop. I haven’t had any rubbing except a quarter of an inch on the front bumper when I’m at full lock turning. I also haven’t done too aggressive off roading yet, so I’m sure when I do that I’ll rub in the back. Thank for watching!
Awesome, do u installed carrier bearing drop kit? And front control arm?
How do the shocks feel compared to the old Bilstein's? Are they stiffer over bumps? I'm hesitant to go with "fancy" Nitro shocks again due to a set of Fox 2.0s I had riding like a small boat in a hurricane and nearly causing concussions and slipped discs on rough roads.
The lift look's sweet ,great job🤙😎💯
How high is your lift...?
When u bought the leaf springs, did they come wit the new U bolts and bushings???
How's the leaf springs? I'm in between those and the icon rtx
How did your alignment go I put a 2. 1/2 and i was told maxed out God did your go ? Truck looks really nice
Wait. So the new strut accounts for the driver weight using that spacer?
Great job, watching you do it by yourself. But I noticed you left the mudflap on on the passenger side and took off the driver side mudflap. But overall your truck looks great, go Taco!
Pete6 Holguin0 i just didn’t take it off before that. As soon as I was done the lift I took it off. Thanks for watching!
Nice rig! Great video and y’all seem to be great peeps! Well done!
PJ Felix thank you so much! And thanks for watching!
So since August what is your take on the OME lift? I’m going with the 887 coils, soft ride struts and medium duty leaf pack.
PJ Felix I dig it! I’m actually going to be putting up a 5,000 mile review of it this weekend. Some things I like, other things I would change, but over all I’m happy with it
Great video, just came across it. What was the deciding factor that made you choose OME vs say Bilstein’s, ICON or Fox? If I follow through with a deal I made on a ‘19 TRD OR I’m considering OMEs as well but I’m wondering how they would perform in the arctic cold of interior Alaska??? Anyhow, I’ll start watching your videos, btw great choice of wheels! 👌
AKBRONCOSFAN007 thank you! I went with OME for a couple reasons. 1) I am new at this. I don’t have much experience off roading. In my head I’m going right to moab and hitting some trails, but in reality I don’t have much access to pretty heavy off roading trails where I live, so I would be selling Kings, icons, or fox shocks short for what they are designed for. It was a tough choice between OME and Bilstein’s, and ultimate went with OME because of their reputation in the overland community for so long. You could say the same for Bilstein’s too though. , 2) the price. The more I saved on the lift, the more I could put towards other things for the truck.
Ultimately the more off-roading I do, and the more experience I gain, I believe things on the truck will be upgraded. My hope is to someday put kings the truck, but for now OME is a good fit.
How much lift did you get with the 886 springs up front with no spacers
I don't think you did longer upper control arms, what was the lift in the front?
Hey bro looks nice how much lift did that set of ome give u .......
excelente...
how long did you ride the stock for until you got the OME
I know this was 3 years ago but I have A Tacoma with old man emu an it only gave me a 1” lift in front from stock . I want more so I can look level to rear . I know the rear has the medium load leaf pack . I bought truck with it already on . An what size tire did you run with that lift?
Great videos - will start binge watching..question.. does your spare fit underneath with your upgraded wheels / tires? I worry about going up in size and it not fitting - thanks
Also, did you need to do upper control arms or no?
Awesome video! Was this the 2 inch or 3 inch? Also where did you buy from that had the trim packer included to account for taco lean?
Sergeant Infantrymen it was sold as the 2 inch lift. It was closer to three for a few months before it settled though. I ordered it off toytec.com. It gives an option to add the spaced to the driver side.
How big of a lift is this, 2inch?? Just ordered the same one, on 33" mud graps on fuel -12mm rims
I just got a 2023 Tacoma my truck is nice and I don’t wanna put block on a new truck. This kit would be safe for me??
What was the difference in the lift between the old Springs and the top of the tire and the inside of the wheel well to the new ones
Looks great brother, I didn't cought it but is this a 3" lift?
Great video. Are you happy with the heavy duty Dakars? Do you carry a bunch of weight. I’m deciding between the medium vs heavy. When I camp I have an RTT, gear and firewood loaded up. I may pull a 4000lbs travel trailer also
Grenado thanks for watching and for the comment! I’m going to be doing a wives video on the lift next week, but I am not super happy with the heavy duty leaf packs. With just the cap and a spare in the bed, it has dropped a good bit, even below what I think should be considered the ride height. They also settled in a strange “w” pattern which ARB said was normal when I emailed them. For you, I would look into deaver springs. Those are what I’m going with in a few months.
Did you extend brake lines?
holy shit it!!!! its robin williams
Switch out to sumo springs for your bump stops, trust you won’t regret it.
Do you know the size of the zerk fitting?
How much lift was the heavy duty pack?
Sir is that a 3 inch lift? Or 2?
So after a year, what is your impression?
how is the overall drive - daily drive
Is this a lift kit you can buy? If so, what’s the link?
Love your new setup. Well done! Wish you could have had some help with your install. I'm sure you and the camera person were worn out in that heat!
This video is what is making me go with this lift for my taco. Great video!! Would you mind telling where you bought all of the lift from?
Joshraskin that’s awesome, thank you for watching!!! I ordered everything from toyteclifts.com.
The Good Vibes Project, also, after everything was done, did you need a cab mount chop and did you go with the softer or firmer valving in the shocks
Joshraskin I didn’t do the cab mount chop yet. I haven’t done aggressive enough off roading yet to have an issue with rubbing. I have a small bit of rubbing on the front driver side wheel well liner at full lock going in reverse, other than that no troubles. I went with the soft valves
The Good Vibes Project thanks. And one final question haha. You had them pre assemble your front struts (for the extra 50$) I appreciate the quick replies!! Keep making videos :)
Joshraskin yeah man, I had them pre assembled! No worries! Thanks for watching!
Good video
Music made me want to cry though :(
No rubbing? Im doing 33"s on my 2017 Tacoma and was told a CMC was necessary. Im also doing a 2" front, 1" rear spacer mount (for now, Fox suspension coming soon)
Dan W no running at all. The old man emu is considered a 2 inch lift in the front I believe, and I haven’t had any running. My wheels are also a -10 offset so I’m sure that plays a part too
@@TheGoodVibesProject My new wheels are a -4 offset.. im thinking it should be fine.
Good job! Thanks for taking the time to record this. I noticed you marked the camber(?) indicator. Did you need an alignment afterward?
In hindsight....do yo tank te add a leaf would have been enough? I have a gen2 LB I am thinking of doing this to. I am getting a alu-cab camper which will weigh about 550lbs I think with normal gear. I already have firestone airbags....thinking the leaf might be enough?
How is the ride after breaking it in?
Thanks again...
Steve thank you! Thanks for watching too!! I marked it to get it roughly back in alignment but went right to get an alignment done the next day. I am considering a go fast camper, that’s only 250, so I went with more than not enough. The ride is great right from the get go, but since breaking in it’s been super smooth. I’m not sure about the set up you have now so I can’t say if it would or wouldn’t be enough. With the HD leaf pack you have up to 660 lbs, so that would work
Thanks for the fast reply. I am selling my place in line for a GFC...#853 estimated Aug completion. I visited GFC in Belgrade, MT....Vagabond in Benicia(Drifter) and AT Overland (Summit) in Prescott. All have pros/cons. If you would like my honest opinion on all of them, if private messages are allowed, I would be happy to share my experiences. Having said that, Alu-cab was a better fit for me. All said and done it was more than twice the price....so there is that. I have been carrying a snug top fiberglass camper since new...that must weigh 250 plus? I am thinking another 250 or so with airbags should be good?
Any concerns with stock control arms with alignment?@@TheGoodVibesProject
Steve I don’t know how to private message, but I would totally like to hear your opinion on each. I like go fast because it seems basic, the price is close to where I would be if I got a cap then a rtt, and it looks like it’s built well. I haven’t heard much negative about it. The alucab are amazing through. Those slide in campers with the drop down steps on the back are epic, but again, my biggest concern is price since I’m trying to build this on a budget. Yeah I think you’ll be good, if not add a leaf is super easy!
@@TheGoodVibesProject They can get pricey for sure....and no doubt GFC is cost effective. I would really not like to share my opinions to the public...just doesn't seem right.
Having had a RTT(CVT)....I am convinced this is a far better route. I am going with the Alu_cab canopy camper...not the Khaya. That will set you back 14k basic configuration(Khaya). They are running close to 12 months now I think? I just needed more than GFC offered. It is a very lean 'camper', which might work very well for you. Might go to forum.gofastcampers.com and read up on some things. You will see my spot listed in marketplace.
Steve I gotcha, I wouldn’t expect you to do that publicly either. Are you on Instagram? If so, can you shoot me an private message on there? I may be interested in taking that spot in line off your hands, I just have some more questions about it.
Just bought myself the lift, but everyone says i need upper a arms does your truck still drive fine with the stock ones
Did you end up getting new UCA's? I've heard you don't need them really.
You will have a king 3.5 lift UCA was fucking close to the tire I just did a cheap freedom off road UCA
Great video! Did you have to drop the front dif?
Simon Paez thank you! I did.
The Good Vibes Project, i never could find the review video you mentioned you’d do several months after this. Did I miss it somewhere? How much did those 2888 coils settle on you in the front? Thx
Craig Bowman I didn’t, the entire covid pandemic really hindered me making any videos. They settled about 7/8 of an inch. The driver side settled a bit more so it still has a slight driver side lean, but not too noticeable and not enough to rub anywhere.
The Good Vibes Project thanks that makes sense. 7/8s is a good bit of droop. You running any small spacers to get it back up? Still happy with the choices? I ask because I just ordered the same setup.. medium duty all around.
Wheels & tire set up?
