7:49 True, a body lift doesn't give you anymore suspension travel or ground clearance for the frame. However, a body lift does give the body more ground clearance so it is less likely to get hung up on obstacles. Body lifts also allow for larger tires and we all know the benefits of larger tires.
So good to see Hi/Low back again. Only qualm is that I would’ve loved an intro video talking about the cars, why these cars etc. just seemed so abrupt that we have a new episode - which is by no means a complaint. I did enjoy the work around having a third Tacoma as a baseline, excellent work.
Okay, so I’m not the only one who was wondering the in and outs of the truck. Maybe they just posted that video for the donut underground members??? Anyone know?
They hinted at this many times. Even straight up said they were doing Tacoma's. Assuming they picked them because Tacoma's are some of the best bang for the buck stock off-roaders.

For the money the low truck is a great set up for your average weekend kind of off roading most people do. The real test in my opinion is the long term durability. If you are having to rebuild that set up every 20K miles, are you really saving money? A lot of the higher end kits will easily push 60K-70K miles in a life time before having to be rebuilt or replaced.

Honestly, i personally think that this race would only work in an off road Drag Race or something like that cuz the Money Pit E36 rally build probably is gonna be a WRC style Build and we know WRC is about the fastest stage time and the Hi Low tacoma is more of an extreme rock crawling high suspension travel and stuff style of truck
@@rns_nickitoloko_psn5775 Not really rock crawling with a 3 inch lift and that departure angle. 1st gen tacos make pretty cool overlanders, so hopefully they end up going that route since the market is flooded with parts right now. Shipping is gonna be rough though no matter what🤦🏻♂️
OK, can I just say this channel extremely fuckin rocks. You guys kill it with the produciton. Everything down to the lighting, sound design, music, drone footage and spicy B roll, editing, and of course teaching people how to have fun working on project cars with budget and expensive parts to reach a common goal. Killer work to all you guys at Donut Media. Im now a fan.
The reason I love doughnut so much because it’s more realistic to someone just working on a car in the garage rather than some professional guys making sure everything is torqued to spec and replacing every single part such as the ball joints. Nolan was like meh we’ll make it work 😂
I mean...there is a reason why stuff is torqued to specs...over torqued nuts is gonna shear off under aggressive driving and under torqued is gonna detach the wheel off one fine day...seen and heard too many of those stories. I am an amateur offroader and I installed wheel adapters on my ride and you bet I did a thorough job of making sure those are correctly installed and torqued...
@@amar.mohamed well yes I agree I’m a heavy equipment mechanic so everything is torqued to spec but honestly you can’t say that you’ve never just sent something home on a personal vehicle with impact and thought “Eh it’ll hold” send it!

@@KayJblue not necessarily. But they didn't do the whole control arms and remote resivor shocks. Bilsteins are nice. But the other kit simply had more parts accompanying it.
This video informed my decision to install Bilstein 5100’s and an Icon AAL. Couldn’t be happier with my decision. It performs well offroad, but more importantly as my daily driver, it drives like a brand new truck, handling corners like a champ, and giving me more confidence behind the wheel. My next suspension upgrade is To replace the shackle hangers with Archive Garage Hammer Hangers, which should give my ride the stability in the rear end I feel is lacking.

Excited for the new season! Older tacos are a really fun choice. The challenges in this were a good watch - it'd be interesting to see concrete numbers for each truck like measurements on an articulation ramp and calculations for the various angles.
Production Value: Ambulance, umbrella boy for camera man, high and low end vehicle mods, etc - $$$ James: *shouts* "Like a lizzard with poison in its saliva!" Aaand thats why I LOVE this channel.
Can we just appreciate 3 things 1 Ebay sponsored A WHOLE SEASON *big league bois* 2 James has lost alot of weight clearly taking care of himself since his heart has a glitch 3 Nolan has come SO FAR in being confident and firing off as a entertainer in one off shots... like good for him getting so comfortable on camera when he doesn't have a full presentation script, that's not something alot of people can do!!
Excited for this new season. It would’ve been interesting to see James+Hi Team switch to Lo Team this season, but either way, great work so far fellas.
These videos are amazing. I have an old 04 Tacoma with a bunch of old off road parts that were added before I bought it used a few years ago. All of them need replacing and I've been looking for months not knowing the differences. Great videos!
If you plan on installing a kit your self please go for a set with loaded strut assemblies opposed to just springs and shocks it's like 300 more for most kits and you don't have to rent a Widowmaker
When I redid the springs on my Old Man Emu coilovers in front, I just used the weight of the truck on the springs to compress them for disassembly. Once it was all loose, I simply jacked the truck up, undid the lower shock mount bolt, and it all came out safely. Did the opposite for Installing a softer spring. With no spring compressor or flying parts, I had it all together safely and without worry.
I did the same exact thing. I have the bilstien 5100s with ome 885 coils. In the rear I have bilstien 5160 with a add a leaf. And for the price point it is very capable off road. I live in the north east and hit some of the areas best off road parks.
@@markoz673bajen8 yeah the 2jz swap really eliminates the appeal for the kind of offloading they'd be used for here in the states. The engine being reliable and not making enough power to eat the drivetrain is big selling point here.
The high priced suspension will make the most difference burning through the desert at high speeds for long periods. My guess is that the Icon's will ride significantly better and have very little fade when compared to the Bilsteins. Bilstein makes a very good shock for the price though!
@@CharlieIIpics They touched on it at the end, but didn't include it as a test. But did agree that the Hi-Truck's Icon setup handled it no problem, where as the Bilsteins just merely handled it.
I recommend the Billsteins (5100 set-up) to just about anyone looking to lift their truck - love the series shocks, and they have far superior valving vs other single tube dampers. On my current build, 8 months 2 days deep into waiting for my icon stage 7 kit....
@@owenb7911 Thanks, you made me look up the term. I've always thought it's called windguard/screen then I learned that they're not similar but serves the same purpose.
Just a helpfull tip: when you pop the hats off your coils put both feet on the hat and aim the base at the tire or wall but make sure the tire is like 3 to 4ft away otherwise if the base is touching the tire you get the result you guys got which is the inertia is sent to the only part not being held into place...the bolt and gun.
I had an inkling after the new money pit E36, an offroader would be picked. The First Gen is great. Also you guys need to change the water pump gasket at some point.
No money pit for a while because Zach has to do Hilo and can't do moneypit at the same time, last time hi low was playing money pit made it'd entrance and Zach could do both.

I love how this doesn't feel like a RUclips video. Honestly, the production quality is so high, you could tell me this was a Netflix series and I wouldn't question it.
This is amazing. I'm so stoked that its Tacomas this season. One thing that seems like it missing from this episode though is any introduction of the trucks. Like, which generation Tacoma did you guys choose? Not everyone knows the difference. What features do they have stock? 4wd? diff locks? What trim level are they? etc. Didn't even mention what year they are.
100% agreed. Besides just a possible lack of a bedside decal the silver truck looks to be just a base 4wd model while the red one is a TRD with an e-locker.
Right! I have an 01 trd 4x4 with diff lock, I plan on following the cheap build as of suspension with some UCAs, but they really glaze over the specs of the trucks. But super pumped they chose Tacos
High Taco has a "locker", and Low Taco has the open diff set up. Hence the Off Road sticker AND the different drain plugs on each rear axle. If the competition is fair then make sure the E-Locker is turned off. Just sayin'... Looking forward to this series since I have a FJC and TacoPro in the stable.
As a 1st gen owner myself, I love the fact they're getting more love. James missed one other kind of suspension and that's full blown long travel. Thats what I have on my taco and it makes an even bigger difference in off road performance
7:42 A body lift gives your tires more clearance between tire and body when turning or under full compression. A body lift really does help more than just the appearance of being higher.
I came down to the comments hoping that someone had addressed this. Additionally, a body lift can allow for fitment of larger tires, thus creating more ground clearance. Now, I seriously doubt that anyone would suggest that body lifts are in any way superior to a suspension lift (other than typically being extremely affordable), just that they can serve more of a purpose than being purely aesthetic.
They also help keep the center of gravity lower, and less geometry shifting. Though, for what they are doing with it, a body lift would really be more for extra clearance than anything else.
@@explorewithme4707 bro I have a suspension under my bronco and I could either cut up my fenders or use a body lift to clear the 37s. being as it's an older truck and parts are only getting harder to find I went the body lift over cutting. Stop acting like a know it all car guru when clearly your the inexperienced one. Go BUILD a truck or two and get back to me. Paying a shop doesnt count.
Other then running bigger tires for "aesthetics" (how vain) larger tires even just going from 31"s - 33"s makes such a big difference on being able to get over obstacles it really can warrant the use of a body lift. This also applies as someone mentioned to reduce or eliminate rubbing if you don't want to trim fenders.

I’m glad the peeps in the comment section also brought up the tire pressures, I was kinda surprised donut didn’t address it. Even a few psi’s would’ve done a difference. Still a great decision on this season!
My first car was a 2002 Tacoma, but I lost it a couple years ago to an accident. But, I got back into it with a 2006 Taco so I'm still on the trails. Can't wait to see what they do for this season!
I suggest both teams get in contact with a local off-road club and completing one of their beginners off road ‘clinics’ and covering that on the show too. 4 wheeling is a very different kind of driving. The people putting on the clinic can also help you guys decide what modifications might be best for hi and low cars respectively.
And they'd probably benefit from having knowledgeable spotters. I wheeled jeeps for a long time and having a good, experienced spotter made a huge difference.

That would be great
Honestly, i personally think that this race would only work in an off road Drag Race or something like that cuz the Money Pit E36 rally build probably is gonna be a WRC style Build and we know WRC is about the fastest stage time and the Hi Low tacoma is more of an extreme rock crawling high suspension travel and stuff style of truck

This video informed my decision to install Bilstein 5100’s and an Icon AAL. Couldn’t be happier with my decision. It performs well offroad, but more importantly as my daily driver, it drives like a brand new truck, handling corners like a champ, and giving me more confidence behind the wheel.

Toyotec only charges $100 for assembly when getting the Old Man Emu kit.
I made a similar comment. They made that and the eyelet/tophat alignment look a lot easier than it is.
If James didn’t write his act, then he is THE improv king in this country.
Was hoping Nolan would get the Hi car this time.

Say your broke without saying it
@@explorewithme4707 bro I have a suspension under my bronco and I could either cut up my fenders or use a body lift to clear the 37s. being as it's an older truck and parts are only getting harder to find I went the body lift over cutting. Other then running bigger tires for "aesthetics" (how vain) larger tires even just going from 31"s - 33"s makes such a big difference on being able to get over obstacles it really can warrant the use of a body lift.
